I own half life 2 and after completing it, I sent back and played the first game but didn't play to far into it. The first game has of course dated quite badly but I do believe you can patch the first game to use Half-life 2's engine to match the visuals...or something like that??

Not 100% neccessary, but if you like being Gordon Freeman it's a must. If you can't handle the dated visuals, I think you can play on Steam with updated graphics. Also don't miss Black Mesa (also on Steam) which is HL1 100% remade by fans. It's immense. And free!!

Half Life 2 complete bundle is available on Steam for £6.74. It includes the all the original Half Life games as well as all the Half Life 2 games.

Just in case anyone wants to buy Half Life 2 with both episodes 1 and 2, it's cheaper to buy the Orange Box, which has all of the above, plus Portal (£3.99 at instant gaming atm)

I ended up going directly from Steam, when I see they make you pay there paypal fee and request photo ID? Never seen this before. I'm sure they are legit but not worth the risk when saving a few pennies.

If you've managed to get this far into the existence of the human race without owning Half Life 2 or The Orange Box then this is an essential purchase. Have a look in your Steam inventory and you might have enough trading cards to sell to fund this
