Edit, actually it is quite easy to resist. To really enjoy it you need the subwoofer as well. Sounds rather gutless/hollow without.

It does not sound hollow without the sub. I've been using just a sound bar for the last 12 months and the sound is amazing for tv and music. Obviously the sub will enhance this but I would definitely recommend a play bar if you are thinking of going down the Sonos route. Remember the play bar also can be used as a stand alone speaker too.

You don't need the dub. This is bloody brilliantl and great price and you can get two play 1s got 299 at mo.

I've got the Sub and 2x Play1 hooked up with mine. Love it to bits!
On the sub, it's absolutely not a requirement. The bass from the unit itself is sufficient for all but the most authentic action or drum & bass.
If yours sounds hollow you have it positioned incorrectly or its somehow too confined.

Sonos has some much cheaper competition coming, I wonder if they will go the way of Blackberry in the future.

Seems to be some confusion here, I said "to really enjoy it" I think the sub is needed. For me it makes a huge difference, having first demo'd the opening sequence of Swordfish without, with and then without. It's ok without, it's fantastic with.
Of course it's not a requirement. A soundbar isn't a requirement. It does however, make a big difference. :smirk:
And it was positioned just fine, thanks. I was in a professional showroom at the time after all.

I think this will be good for anyone looking to go down the full multiroom SONOS route. However, I could not recommend this for a standalone TV soundbar, even at this price point.
Why?
No native Bluetooth support, and a ridiculously expensive subwoofer that you kinda do need as well, if you want a full, rich sound. Truth be told, for nearly £500, I could only recommend this to anyone who was going to be getting a SONOS setup anyway, but not to anyone wanting just a quality TV soundbar - There are plenty of quality alternatives: Sony NT3/RT5, Orbitsound A70, Bose Cinemate.. etc.

I have to agree, running a cheaper Yamaha setup in my bedroom proves this to me daily.
One extra positive I have found though with Sonos, having the Playbar enables me to group other rooms to the TV, enabling me to carry on hearing the TV if I have to go into another room for a bit. Surprisingly handy for example if cooking in the kitchen and I've got some Motorsport/rugby/well worn prog etc.. on in the lounge

How can 8cm drivers produce bass frequency of a sub? Surely it's just not possible
The_Hoff
19 Nov 15#19
So you were being sold a product, by a sales person, that's demoing a scene that's not typical of 90% of its use case and wondering why it made such an apparent difference.
If you owned it you'd properly share a different opinion. Yes it's amazing at what it does, yes I freaking love it, but unless your focus is purely on action films it's not important and the play bar does a fine job in solitude.
I could turn off the sub in my lounge and my wife would never notice it had disappeared.
The play bar (and rear channels) will adjust their sound if a sub is found in the same zone, they instead will fill only the top and mids. It's entirely possible the demo you had was impacted by that, depending on how they operated the sub side of things.

What If I want to move my play 1/3/5/Bar speaker into a room that has weak WiFi signal?
What if I just want to make a direct connection and play content from whatever source I want?
I'm sure it's not unreasonable to want AptX Bluetooth in a £500 Sound System as well.

WIFI wise, buy a Boost or get an AP. Source wise, we'll you can already play local files from iOS for example.

How can you gauge the additional value from the sub based on one experience? Your environment is guaranteed to sound completely different to a stark shop full of hard surfaces.
Pointless debate in any case, like I said, I could turn mine off and only I'd know. I think it's wrong to suggest it's anything but brilliant even without a sub, the critics agree.
You can buy a sub down the line, but you won't miss it if you've never had it.

I've got a 5 speakers set up connected with Wifi £24 each, with Spotify. It's a joke to pay that price. Even throw in the £10 a month for Spotify, still cheaper than the sono. The life span of this type of electronic product is just 2-3 years. That speaker is seriously overpriced but doesn't seem to offer an extremely competitive edge. My personal opinion of course folks

I agree, I've got every room setup with ceiling speakers with cables running to a mini amp and digifunk 3 wireless. For anybody considering Sonos they should also look at alternatives because they are vastly overpriced and also have the marketing and review world fully paid up.

why would the lifespan be 2-3 years ??? I've had the speakers in my living room for about 7 years now I think and they are still working fine and they were only a few hundred! I'd expect these to last a long time!

Biggest problem with the Playbar for me that hasn't been mentioned yet is its inability to play true 5.1 DTS audio. If you own/watch a lot of blu-rays there's a good chance it won't be the sub for you. If they sorted this issue out I'd be snapping this up right away as love Sonos in general.

Are they different or just a gymmick from Sonos to charge a premium price ?

You are right. All bass you hear in Sonos is just bass reflex. Way too expensive for what it is. Many better options for less than 300£.

In way, I love the Sonos:1 that i bought for £125 earlier this year after seeing a deal on this forum.
I love the fact that it is portable: I can move it around in the house and plug it in the room where I am at the time.
I question the relevance and value add of fixed bulky Playbars, woofers and others when there are so many solutions converting wired speakers into wireless for a fraction of the price!
Am I missing something?

After being gifted a Play 1 and being really surprised with the quality and interface, and having heard excellent reviews with the playbar, I listened to the Playbar at Richer Sounds this afternoon.
I was convinced I was going to spend the best part of £1k but I was honestly disappointed and gutted it wasn't better sounding... Even with the sub activated, it wasn't as good as I'd hoped (far from it) . I compared it with the Denon Heos soundbar (much better quality sound, louder, bassier, cheaper), then tried the Yamaha 2500 which was a different beast completely - if I was going to buy a sound bar, the Yamaha was the one I'd get. Unfortunately the playbar didn't live upto the Play 1 expectation.
I can't fault the Sonos interface and integration with Spotify, but they're charging a massive premium for this. I'm convinced I'll buy another Sonos speaker (Play 1 or 3) but the price of the Playbar and Sub is unfortunately not value for money compared to the competition.
