I think the big difference is comfort, IMO. I find them to be less fatiguing on the ears.
I've owned the HD429 and both broke. The cable into the headphones is quiet thin and just gave up and these look very similar. Both around the 1 year mark. But for not even £30 they will make really good commuter headphones
Hope that's helpful!

the honest answer is that it depends and a lot comes down to personal preference. I have some Sure 530`s which are in-ear that cost £350 and they make you weak at the knees for vocals. I appreciate that most people couldn't justify this amount, but it depends on the price points of the headphones. Some in ear will be better than over ear, but there are some general characteristics to help you make a decision:
Most closed ear headphones will produce a deeper bass - which at the cheaper end of the market can sound really boomy which i hate. Sennheiser to their credit typically do a good compromise between vocals and bass. If you listen to rock or dance than closed cups might work for you best.
Closed cups do a better job at isolating the ambient sound which means you hear more of what comes out of the headphone.
Comfort and style is personal preference. I can only wear closed cups for short period of time before they hurt. I can wear in-ear's for 12 hours on a flight for example. For style - I cannot get away with wearing closed cup out and about (getting a little old) but have no problems sporting my in-ear headphones.
Sennheiser typically are very good compared to the competition at each and every price point.

Yes but there are too many variables to briefly summarise it. You can get good quality from in ear headphones if you spend more. I think the choice really comes down to personal preference and comfort. I won't put anything smaller than my elbow in my ear so on ear and over ear is the only way to go for me.
As for these units, I have the HD 429. I did listen along side the HD 419 when picking them (along with the 439 & 449). For me the 429 was as cheap as I could live with the sound quality on while backpacking. They survived a year of being stuffed in a back pack with no case for them. The thin wire tangles very easily and I imagine a few years and it's going to need replacing. Being a captive cable that's probably not going to be simple.
still get £1 cheaper when you do fast track £26.49

These sound amazing and very comfortable. However the cord length is a big minus, you are very limited in your movement around desk, it's hard to describe but I found myself pulling them out by accident on occasions.

Send them to Sennheiser. I've had a few items from them break and they've always been great at replacing them.
