Apparently it is enforced sometimes. This is probably in the same league as speeding, using HID conversion kits, etc. All illegal but you weigh up your odds.

Personally I find it a great help for the butler - he's getting on a bit and struggles to make it all the way from the East wing.

From past experience with buying from China (through GearBest & BangGood), they don't dispatch it "same day" - It usually says when you're adding it to the cart: how many days it's gonna take to "dispatch" that item, which doesn't mean it'll be the delivery date. It means, for e.g. dispatch in 10-15 days + delivery in 17 days = you'll get it in: 32 days at the most or 27 days in the least...

And same thing with refund etc... can take time... you're dealing with a company based in China who has a middle-subsidiary dealing/taking orders in the UK/EU - can take time to reverse the order and get a refund. But usually you do get it...

I bought one yesterday and immediately had second thoughts. I contacted my CC company telling them I didn't mean to make the purchase and thought I had one more step before completing purchase but I was logged in to PayPal so transaction went through. They suggested that I ask Gearbest for a refund, but if I got no where with them, they would be happy to raise a dispute after 14 days. I emailed Gearbest who responded saying the refund is complete but I haven't received a refund notification from PayPal. Think I will spen the extra money and get it from the UK.

No because they are untested, the chinese dont have vigorous safety tests for electronics so if its not been tested to safety standards and has the info on it to prove it then it is completely unknown as to if its safe or not, your batteries could leak or catch fire for example, you pays your money and you take your chances

A bike causes life threatening injuries when you equate mass with speed and hard unforgiving pavements, if you dont understand that then you should get off your bike and walk, those who fail to understand such fundamental basics will never have the foresight necessary to share the footpath safely. But then of course your should not be on the footpath if ther is a road you are legally obligated to be on the road, pavement is for pedestrians, the only time you are allowed to share it is on a red route or on a footpath with no road, such as a foot bridge. If you dont like adhering to the law and are too chicken to ride on the road then use your legs or public transport,

I'm not trolling. Firstly who said anything about 'darting'? You probably think all cyclists on pavements will act like those chav's you see on BMX's in the high street but I'm talking about proper cyclists. I cycle at a steady pace equivalent to a jogging speed and pay attention to everything in front of me. If I was on the pavement I would slow down to walking speed when I see pedestrians and slowly navigate through them.

Secondly, how many people pedestrians have been killed by cyclists compared to cars? Likewise how many cyclists have been killed by cars? The number of incidents are always going to be lower if you keep 'human powered stuff' all together. Plus in parks many cyclists and joggers share the same track and they manage fine.

Thirdly unless you are really really frail getting hit by a bike will not cause life threatening injuries. Bikes are light and crumple easily you would probably get as much hurt as if some burley bloke ran into you.
spenspuma
10 Nov 15 1 #228
Oh dear....can't believe I've read this. You're trolling right? It may be safer for the cyclist it certainly ain't safer for pedestrians on the paths having bikes darting around them.

Wake up mate.

No you haven't! Well not unless all the pavements by you are made from Copper....

Real Hoverboards will not be seen on pavements for many many years if at all ever, the technology needed for the induction strength required for them to work simply isn't available.

Also as these 'hoverboards' have wheels that are much more controllable and therefore safer than something that has zero friction!

Anyway, some right boring moaning old gits in this thread, get a grip grandads....

Regardless of the legality (due to the 1835 Highways Act (Yes 51 years before cars where made)) and weather you look like a tool or not, these are very easy to steal:

Step 1: Push over victim resulting in them being face down on pavement and off of the device.
Step 2: Pick up device
Step 3: Run like Hell
Step 4: Sell on eBay. (Repeat step 1 with the tool you’ve sold it to and repeat)

Last bit is a joke but a 15y/o did have his stolen by simply being pushed off of it.

I've bought two of these self balancing boards, the first one stopped recognising pressure on one of the pads so I had to send it back, the second one (mark 2 (the more triangular one) kept on grating against the wheel when I stood on it causing friction and then just coming to a stand still. The build quality on these are seriously poor and having sent the second one back, I will not be purchasing a third. I am just glad I bought via proper channels so that I had a proper person to raise a refund with.

Hi there, GearBest are a good company to deal with... have warehouses in China, USA, EU and Russia... not in the same league as Amazon, but their customer service is quite good... only downside is that if something is coming from their Chinese warehouse, it can take some time to deliver... abt 21 days or more in some cases...

Have personally bought stuff from gearbest many times... twice in excess of £100 and had no problems... hope this helps

jeez a lot of people on here are completely up themselves and seem to have something against others having fun....
the law against these is a bit excessive imo but has only been put in place due to a minority of its users misusing them and behaving in a way that puts others at risk.
Unfortunately the law isn't always on the same side of logic...and it would appear that some of the laws were written/agreed by people with the same characteristics as some on here.
I don't own one if these, but as a person who enjoys giving things a go in the name of fun I have used one.
They are a great laugh and you feel a little sense of accomplishment once you manage to feel balanced when using it. I believe most people who tried one of these would enjoy it had they been given the opportunity to use one when no one was looking.... but too many people seem to worry about what they'll look like using or doing a certain thing rather than jumping in and enjoying themselves...
yes there are always some idiots out there that will cause accidents/injuries regardless of what mode of transport... but they are often the exception rather than majority.
so all those that are sitting down judging others out there for using one of these just carry on with your life and if you truly get enjoyment out of just being negative about others choices...I feel for you... but you won't be on my mind for too long...as I'll be out enjoying life like many others on here....

and as I am familiar with some of the users on here (likely the same users putting things like this down)... feel free to get that little extra bit of joy in your life by commenting on my Grammer or spelling.... after all..... it is so important to enjoying life... especially when it's on a forum...

p.s. heat added as it is a good price if you're willing to be a yes man/woman/boy/girl and give things in life a go
rpope to mastermixlee
9 Nov 15 1 #149
Jeez some people are just so up themselves thinking they can break the law or ignore it just because its a small number causing trouble, well its the same for most laws, its to control the few that they are there not to control the majority, the majority wouldn't murder someone or rape them etc but to stop those that might and punish those that do we have laws. Its the same with seatbelt laws and not using mobiles while driving, a few caused a problem so a law was enacted to stop it. You think the law is wrong, fine, write to your MP and ask him to get rid of it. Otherwise just accept its the law and follow it or accept the punishment if you are arrested/fined or whatever.

I hardly think the draftsman of the Highways Act 1835 considered the possibility of hover boards, however, the general principle still stands.

I have seen people 'nipping' about on hover boards throughout packed town centres. I have even seen a person 'riding' one through a major department store. I see a time when they are commonplace, they are more carefully regulated (like cars) and everybody is using one - but that time is not now.

I hate these, and can see what's coming with them, but my 11yr old has one at the top of his Christmas list. We've been through the whole quad bike phase where we ended up having to buy tow bar and trailer whilst spending £30 a day for him to ride it legally on an organised track 40 miles away from our home! Surely these cant be classed as a similar kind of risk! I think the gov really needs to make some changes to these draconian laws and move a bit further forward with technology. How is this any different from the rollerskate and skate boarding debate from the 70's

I didn't ride on public roads or pavement but actually in a private garden of the owners property... and of course your comment relating the laws of these devices and the laws of rape and murder are completely justified....and not in anyway troll like responses. ... why not carry on to mention terrorism? There are also laws against that...but are they relevant to this thread? Nope...
Heads up for some relevant comparisons in relation to some other modes of transport/enjoyment in case you are struggling to grasp this topic...
cycles (electrically aided and manual), skateboards, scooters (electric operated and manual), skates (yes...electrically aided and manual), Rollerblades (" "), heelies, and all of the hybrid modes of transport in between would of all been more relevant topics.... and most of which aren't getting excessive amounts of press despite causing more injuries than all of these Segway devices.
People can run faster than these devices can achieve. .. is it illegal to run on the pavement??
People still knock people over occasionally by running on the pavement and turning the corner barging into someone.... a law is not introduced banning running.
Accidents happen regardless of what laws are introduced to attempt to reduce injuries....
and yes the statistics will say there are less Segway related incidents after introducing these laws....
because people will be using alternative modes of transport....but the figures for those other transportation methods will not be considered when looking at how the laws applied to use of Segways have worked.

Happy trolling :man:

I have already see a prototype that does indeed travel in mid air a little above the pavement. My reading of the highways act law from 1835 actually would not have them as illegal as they are not riding on the pavement.... So give it a few years and when legal hover boards are flying born the pavement then maybe the mps might think of getting off their bums and updating the law. Meanwhile given court and police resources am sure while there will be a few press releases if people just have fun while trying to watch out for others on the pavement there are better things for police to do.

I for one living in essex care a lot less about bikes and hover boards on the pavement than the cars that pull up and park on them and force pedestrians and buggy users into the road. But police here and the council have said they don't have the resources to keep pavements clear of cars.

I never understood this. It's a million times safer for everyone to cycle on the pavement! So would I rather get hit by a car (of which there are plenty) and likely die or take a chance running into a pedestrian (of which there are few) who is moving slowly and both me and they can get out of the way or stop much easier.

1) Go Ape are operating on private land.
2) They will have permission from the land owner for Segway use.
3) Importantly: they will have a very significant public liability insurance policy.
4) A full risk assessment will have been carried out.
5) There will be signs on designated routes to pedestrians warning them of the potential for oncoming Segway traffic.
6) There are trained 'professionals' accompanying customers to mitigate risk.

etc. etc.
xeroc
9 Nov 15 1 #138
At worst you might be told by an officer to get off it. Most, like with cycling on the pavement, wouldn't even waste their time having to fill in the paperwork for the stop.

But, the reason for the prohibition is to do with safety. If a person were to be knocked down to their death due to improper control of these, even if it was an accident, then you could receive a hefty sentence for the manslaughter charge that would ensue. :man:

There's many points to consider, for example mobility scooters legally can only be driven 4mph on a pavement or 8mph on the road. These balance board segway things go 10mph. A mobility scooter that goes 8mph must be registered with the DVLA and obtain the relevant licence to drive it on the road.

Whatever you say victorian dad, onwards to the next fad to waste your cash on. I had a bike as a kid I didn't ride it down the high street I would have got a slap, when you go shopping etc with mum you walk, then you spend a couple of hours a week riding your bike round the park or any large unused area nearby if parents these days can't be bothered taking their kids to the park and instead choose to let them use tesco as a playground while they shop thats bad parenting, not teaching their kids that there is a time and a place for playing and the high streets and shops are not it.

not that it matters as I haven't seen a single child riding one of these segways, everyone I have seen riding them round the streets and in shops are old enough to know better, its a hipster and techtart transportation device used by men in their 20s and 30s with a love of Apple products, beards and tight trousers or a love of Beats, top of the range band new Nike gear and diamond studs.

Until you get hit by a car backing out/entering a driveway, cyclists riding headlong like they are wearing blinkers are asking for it, they glide in a straight line down the pavement and across roads, I have never seen a cyclist on the pavement stop at a road to look left and right let alone pay any attention to driveways, car parks, people coming out of their homes etc.

but then they don't care if they hurt other people like that poor little gurl who got hit by a cyclist sometime ago or the old lady who ended up with her face smashed up and a broken arm, they only care about getting hurt themselves thats why the laws are needed because people are selfish sods, shame they are not enforced, utterly pointless not enforcing laws come down like a tonne of bricks on people and they will soon stop selfishly breaking the laws.

What do you get kids in your family for Christmas? nuts, oranges or handmade pull along wooden toys. I don't really like them but its tech and kids will always want toys that move, the law stinks as young kids can ride electric quads with no issue but these are battery and should be treated the same, they are hardly faster than walking. The only issue i see with these is a kid loosing control and going in the road under a car. You should come into the modern age instead of sitting on your front lawn on a deck chair with a rifle they are not hurting you and have you ever thought that its you that's the tool because your the one shouting the loudest. Live and let live.

I don't care that they're illegal, I'm not buying one cause you look like an absolute tool on one

I agree, look daft, and dangerous.
Just slightly quicker than walking too, and without any health benefit.
Wall-E esque.

Again, same with bikes but doesn't put people off buying or riding them. To say you can't ride these anywhere but private land is a load of rubbish

with all the cut backs in the police force these days i doubt very much if someone phones to complain that they will actually bother to go out deal with it.

No need to doubt it, sadly some of the laws in this country are so pathetic, they do seem unbelievable, but this can only be used on private land.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/34504799/the-strange-rise-of-the-hoverboard-and-why-you-shouldnt-ride-them-through-traffic

"Hoverboarders" who use their two wheels on the road are being warned they are breaking the law.
That's because they do not meet the legal requirement to be safely used among other traffic.
And if you think that means it's fine to zoom down the pavement instead, then you'll be committing a 180-year-old offence set out in the Highway Act of 1835.
The rules are being pointed out by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
