Also easy for any Xbox One users out there! Just plug into a USB port and add as extra storage, install your games, then if you go round a friends house, take only the harddrive, plug it into their Xbox One, log into your account and your games are ready to play! Unless your already gamesharing with that person who will have access anyway! I love the way Microsoft have added these sorts of features in a back peddling way to try and catch up with Sony sales. I wanted a PS4, my son wanted an Xbox One, Grrrr, had to get the Xbox.
Went into Argos store today.
got £5 voucher when spending over £50 + a copy of McAfee 2015 internet security.
Also they give me the up to date model version of this drive (not the one pictured)

5 - 10 minutes of poking it with a guitar pick and I'm in  It's not as bad as people are making out,
I started at the end opposite the USB port, I figured it there would be less chance of harming the controller inside that way. Broke a few plastic lugs, they are very thin. But not enough to stop it going back together  There's two on each end and five down each side.

Just in case anyone cares, I just picked up the 'same' drive from Argos in town. Was the newer 2015 model STEA2000400, despite having the older picture.
Looks a bit harder to crack open, but not the end of the world.

Same here.
I'll have a crack at opening it up later on.

Depends on the company, nice to have clarity, and nice for anyone thinking of buying one to know.

A very cheap way of upgrading but unsure about drive warranty, unless Seagate allow you to register the drive serial number outside of its casing removing it would surely void the warranty.
Themadcow to cicobuff
13 Nov 15#17
Yeah, you'll void the warranty which is why the 'best' advice is to try this drive on your PC first to make sure there are no major issues before you take it apart.
In terms of performance, this drive is not only bigger but also performs marginally better than the stock HDD although not as well as the 7200rpm Hitachi 1TB drive or a hybrid/SSD (for obvious reasons). At this price it's easily the best upgrade in terms of £ per GB of space though.
Technically it's a Samsung HDD inside, although Seagate/Samsung are pretty much the same deal in manufacturing HDD's I think. Apparently Seagate had a very bad 3GB drive issue a couple of years ago but that's mostly been sorted.

I've done this with a pair before now to make a RAID array. When one failed, I just sent it back. They don't seem to care, ans frankly why should they? It's just a disk.

Spark to thomas25
13 Nov 15#26
Then you can't do that and that's why you shouldn't buy dodgy copies of digital games on Ebay that probably weren't bought with legit credit cards in the first place.
6ixFoot1 to thomas25
13 Nov 15#27
You can't, you'll lose access to the accounts you don't have passwords for.
16 accounts!! You should've upgraded your HDD before buying those accounts

You need to clone the hard drive in your PS4 so attach both to your PC and use cloning software.

Done this last night with the same hard drive. Opening it was quite easy with a stanley knife. Used the case to house the drive from the PS4 as you can reformat it and use it as an external drive. If you have Playstation Plus just back up your saves to the cloud if you don't then make sure you back them up to a USB or external hard disk. Each save needs backing up individually so leave yourself 45 mins if you have plenty of games. Then it is straight forward to download the system software from playstation to a memory stick and restart the PS4 in safe mode, it gives you the option to reinstall the system software, once done, redownload your games/saves. Took me around an hour in total.
Also if you buy in store you get free internet security software valued at £24.99.

Looks like you get a pound back when you reserve it online too, which makes them sort of the same price, plus free anti-virus.
Good price, upgraded my PS4 a while ago with this same drive, not hard to do at all!! Heat added!!

Oh yeh, once installed you get a total storage space of 1.77TB (for anyone wondering)
cicobuff
13 Nov 15#18
So you are saving £24 over the cost of the usual cost of a 2TB 2.5" such as at Scan with their own Samsung drive being £77, but losing the years warranty. Shame the shell cannot be opened without sign of any damage. With the cost savings its a gamble that maybe worth taking, but still a gamble.

Did this upgrade this week. Fiddly bit was getting os back on the drive. Just make sure the usb drive you use is at least 1gb and formatted to fat32. Then create a folder path PS4/UPGRADE and save PS4UPDATE.PUP in there.
Make sure you download full version of software not patch
Nice one. I was looking at these this morning so excellent timing!

It's suitable as you open the enclosure and remove drive.

13 Nov 151#11
As richkaos said in great detail the idea is you buy the external drive because it works out cheaper than buy the drive as a component on it's own, then take it out of it's enclosure.
EDIT: Ah I realize now your earlier comment was about cracking the external enclosure open and not the PS4 which I thought you meant.
Apologies, you are right you would have to crack open the external enclosure to get the drive, sorry.

it won't be the one in the picture which is easy to open but... When you look at it at first it seems like a sealed unit but if you look about 2-3mm down from the patterned top you will see a faint line/join. i had to score round this with a Stanley blade a few times then i noticed on certain edges it starting to part just enough to get some small screwdrivers in. its then a case of gently twisting the screwdriver to gently prize it open all around the edge. looks like they don't really want people to get into it, unlike the one in the picture that takes about 2 seconds to open. Best of all PS4 now has 1.77TB :-) for under £60

13 Nov 15#8
Yes, but the drive on offer is an *external* (portable) drive so not suitable for replacing the drive in a PS4 !
mikej
13 Nov 15#6
Pretty sure you can't store and play PS4 games on an external drive, so are you suggesting people crack this open to get at the drive inside ?
tanakikhan to mikej
13 Nov 15#7
No cracking involved. Slide smaller panel open, remove one screw and slide old drive out. Reverse to install the new one. Installing the OS takes more effort and time.....
