Looking to replace my lost phone and came across this. Seems like a cracking deal for a cracking phone. Not too convinced the S6 is 50% better to justify the upgrade given battery and camera.

Also can't think of phones which are better. Thoughts appreciated.

I've had my S5 since last Christmas (Vodafone deal). Great phone. No issues so far. Battery lasts 40-48 hours with average use.

the comments on these phone deals are always from the nerd end of the market. "Marshmallow alpha 6" and "customised rom interface". most of us don't care, we just want a nice looking phone that doesn't f#ck out, good battery life and has the features we want whether it's expandable memory or waterproofing. Stop trying to prove your nerd superiority, this is a pretty good deal for this phone, if this is the phone you want. p.s. if you want a really good camera, don't try and buy one that's built into a phone! they're ALL rubbish.

One year into my 24 month contract with this phone and I've had problems.

As mentioned previously, the silver painted edges are starting to peel quite badly now, and the raised camera the the back centre has scratched quite a bit from using it on a desk. I know both of these could be cured by using a case, and I did use a Spigen case for around a month, but it adds bulk to what is already quite a big phone imho (coming from an iPhone 5). All these minor niggles could be forgiven, but the nail in the coffin has to be Samsung's service and repair.

The front camera became obstructed by an internal bezel that had loosened over time, after contacting support, they advised I should travel to my nearest repair centre...in Dublin...from Belfast (3 hour journey). After explaining I simply couldn't do this they sent out a return box a week later. Received the phone back a week later and the camera issue had been fixed, but the screen now turned off randomly, and some apps caused the display to become glitchy and cause tearing. After waiting in line for Samsung's chat support for 2 hours, I was advised this is normal and to perform a full reset (even though the phone had been returned in this state already). The issue is yet to be resolved, and to add insult to injury, the front camera is now blocked again.

In summary, good price, excellent device when working, but iffy build quality and poor support have killed it for me.

My selfie game is no longer #OnPoint

Ive not bought a phone. But I have bought a tablet. You really do pay your money and take you chance with Argos refurbs. You can get a very good one. or you can get one that doesn't work at all. If the item doesn't work they don't offer a replacement. But you do get your money back - eventually. Personally, I don't think the refurbs are that much cheaper than the "new" ones and I'd save my pennies up for and extra few days and avoid the refurbs all together.

For camera the Nokia lumia 1020 is better!
thecynicalsaint to craigl
11 Nov 15 #30
I have had a 1020 for a year (though I have a One Plus X coming in the next couple of days) and the camera is fantastic in the right conditions but it is slow to load and process images which is really annoying if using it on nights out. It also doesn't cope that well with movement in the standard camera function, there are different "modes" that get round this but it obviously takes time to load these up so you can miss the moment.

If you have the time to get the photo right the 1020 beats everything else I have seen, but for more casual photography where you want a very quick snap it does seem like Apple or Samsung phones are a better option.

The 1020 is also a little awkwardly shaped and windows phone has a lot of pluses as an operating system but I just think it's 5%-10% off where it needs to be. Very close, but not quite there.

Overall I would say that for most people at this price the S5 is probably a better option than a 1020.

No it's not, it has more megapixels but the LG G4 has one of the best aperture ratings on any smartphone. Cameras on smartphones are very close now. The LG G4 is slightly ahead of the Lumia 1020 in this comparison test.

The G4 might be a great phone, but personally I dislike the current trend of 5.5" displays. It is not pocket friendly, not comfortable to operate with one hand and possibly slightly more fragile than smaller phones of comparable build quality. Barely having any choice when it comes to screen size in the top range is saddening, I really want premium 4" phones to come back - Phablets were often ridiculed when they were released, how did they become standard in the high-end category? Again, it is my personal stance, I suppose it largely depends on hand size, personal preference and whatnot, but I am looking forward to see a very successful 4"-ish premium device being released.

Best is an overused word. The LG G4 possibly has the best mix of features for the money, I have an S6 and wouldn't swap it for an LG G4. The really stinker on the S6 is the battery life but I expect it to get better once I custom ROM the phone when Marshmallow is officially released for it.

I bought an S5 from an Amazon Marketplace, but returned it as it wasn't a UK model (Factory reset revealed HK ROM). Bought a G3 instead.

I wish I'd stuck with the S5. AMOLED makes the one eye'd man cry.

I bought this phone a year ago. At this price point its still a bit expensive. I paid well over the odds for what I feel is a pretty average phone. The fingerprint scanners doesn't add that much value, the speed of the device isn't all people say it is - the Samsung updates are shocking for the main OS. For the bloatware you can't go two days without Samsung offering an update on some app you didn't know was there (or use).

If you need a new phone, I wouldn't recommend...

Would rather go for the LG G3 if it's still under £200. Much less bloatware and in my opinion a car better design. If you can afford the extra then the G4 is definitely better value.

Got this in the last deal with Argos. Feels very cheap and nasty to me, but two things I despise are glossy plastic and fake metal. The waterproofing is nice, although the flap is supremely annoying, and mine actually fell off the second time I charged it.

Screen is nice, UI is pretty zippy. Having said that, the UI looks a bit old-fashioned next to the S6 - Samsung toned down Touchwiz a fair bit this year but there's no evidence of that here. You will always be stuck with Chaton and other rubbish in the firmware because even though Samsung have discontinued it they don't feel any need to remove it in updates . Might get Android 6.0 but if it does it will be in about 8 months and it will still look the same, as Samsung never refresh the UI of their devices when providing base OS updates (they want people to buy the newer devices). The camera is decent in good light but is substantially worse than the S6 and G4 - it's night and day - literally, since the S5 is an absolute turd in low light.

Having said that, the G4 and S6 are the best overall smartphone cameras I've used. They easily outclass my 6S, which is annoying for me as I would have thought Apple might have tried to be competitive in this market. It means I often take my G4 out instead of the 6S.

Personally I'd pay the extra and get a G4 - yes, it still has a nasty fake metal trim, but it is still a lot nicer than the S5 to my eyes. For the extra money you're getting 3GB of RAM, double the internal storage, a faster update to Marshmallow (which might never come at all to the S5) and a marginally less offensive UI. On top of this, you get one of the best smartphone camera in the world.

Yes the s6 may well feel more premium in the hand but doesn't everyone put their phones in a case these days?!

10 Nov 15 1 #11
No. Personally I hate cases. They bulk out the phone about 50% more thickness, they are expensive (for a good quality one) and the ones I have seen used just collect dirt. It also hides the design of the phone. I don't see the point in choosing a phone then hiding it away in a case. I much prefer a simple skin front and back. Invisible and extremely low profile.

Love my S5 nothing wrong with build quality, the back is thin when its off but so what? The only irritation for my is the silver paint coming off the charging cover, no big deal easily replaced if need be and doesn't affect waterproofing

Got an S5 after getting sick of my Xperia Z1 which I hated, felt better but terrible stupid screen plastic sticker glued on (yes I know you can peel it off but...), the camera was terrible imho never liked the colours, focus etc despite tinkering.

This is waterproof, sd card, may get marshmallow (unified storage, finally!) and replaceable battery. Unlike Sony waterproof means waterproof, I got some great pics of the family at center parcs.

Unless Samsung make the S7 waterproof and give it back sd card support back ill not be buying another one from Sony nor Samsung!!

I'll say this is hot as its a very under rated phone for what you're paying for it.
