Bought one from Amazon a few weeks ago but sent it back. The OS was fast. Apps and such ran like a dream but the gaming aspect.....
Controller isn't very good. I'm used to an Xbox one controller and I just couldn't get away with this one. Also the main feature, game streaming is in my opinion unplayable. So much latency. I have VM broadband (70mb) The Shield was wired to my router and PC and the games are unplayable. Streaming from my PC the lag was enough to make the experience unpleasant. Nvidia now was even worse. Such a shame!

Yeah, you should of been using a switch and not a router. Routers aren't designed for that sort of bandwidth with low latency. No time for buffering with game streaming unlike youtube etc
why don't they just change the price of the item seems a bit unfair to those not going through the todayonly link
cheers

I'm not even sure this price will be beaten on black friday, you have to feel for everyone that bought one early and didn't get the remote

Hmmm, I might just buy it and if its on offer on Black Friday buy another then refund one. Would that work?

I got the pro just a couple of weeks ago from Amazon, its going back and I've reordered it with the free remote.
For some reason the one I have refuses to download off the play store via Ethernet only wifi so don't know if its a bug or the units knackered. Wasn't too bothered but this offer has made up my mind, might even order a normal model for the bedroom too.

If they're both connected to the router by wire then they are on a switch. Using a separate switch wouldn't make any difference.

Possibly, but this deal pops up every 2 weeks or so. Wait till black Friday, if nothing then get this the next time its on sale

Cheers, my bad actually I was meaning to reply to the offer on Amazon. I have £150 credit for Amazon but I don't know whether to use it now for the Shield with Remote @ £150 or wait until the Black Friday deals

Apparnrtly there is something called moonlight which is an open source version of the Nvidia game stream and is much better . I don't have a gpu PC with Nvidia yet so I haven't tried it

A switch? I'll have to have a look into it. Would that solve the latency? I was gutted. I really wanted it to be awesome.
Got my shield from Amazon US warehouse deals for much cheaper than this back in June. Have to say its a good machine... I just use a usb receiver with keyboard & touchpad which cost me £8 - rechargeable too. You'll need a touchpad/mouse for certain apps which require it - unless you root ofc. If I got this id just sell the remote on though as you don't need it. (HDMI CEC compatible). Which the harmony utilizes... Harmony doesn't yet fully support it via infrared which it also has.

It does if you have a Harmony hub tho.

I'm lost - how would adding a switch help? All traffic would still go through the router?

Serious question, but what does this do that a Steam Link doesn't? I thought the Shield was a tablet but this looks to be just a streaming box. I'm currently using a Raspberry Pi (cost all of £15) to stream to my TV but I also use it for other things so I was looking at getting a dedicated device and was thinking of getting a Steam Link as they're only £40.
EDIT - So it's a fully fledged Android box that will play Android games as well? So sort of like an Ouya meets Steam Link?
The speed of your internet is irrelevant - it does use your network, but only locally between devices, nothing goes online, so it's all down to the quality of your router. In theory, you should have speeds of up to a gigabit over ethernet or 300mbps over wireless-N but, as someone else has pointed out, an ISP provided router will not be the best quality. That said, I don't have a problem with latency with a Virgin Media provided router (Superhub 2) streaming to a Raspberry Pi over ethernet, even though the ethernet goes through powerline adapter, so could be worth testing the router for any issues.
Not adding a switch - using a switch. As in instead of the router. :man:
Moonlight is what I run on my Raspberry Pi. Works very well.
thecresta
16 Nov 15#31
Are you using a gigabit router? Depending on the quality settings, HD streams might prove too much for a 100Mb router
das5665
16 Nov 15#32
There is a shield tablet too, this is different. Steam links are good also but they require a powerful PC depending on the title. As for this well as long as you have decent internet you can play any PC game you own as well as other more demanding titles that maybe your PC cannot run

So this bit of info is wrong. Most home routers will use a separate dedicated chip for switching so connections between the ports on the back of the router will be as high speed as you can get. The only exception is routing (not switching) between the LAN ports (that you plug your computers/whatever into) and the WAN port (that is connected to the phone line/internet/whatever).
tl;dr adding a switch doesn't improve performance, a router includes a switch.
That said, I've been using moonlight on my nvidia shield tablet because it offers more control than the built in streaming but it's still a bit disappointing, the wifi chip in the tablet will only do 30mbit/s so though the latency is acceptable the quality isn't, 1080p 60fps isn't happening, 720p 60fps is but then looks ugly if output to a TV. My router can and will do 250mbit/s over wifi to a laptop so it's just the tablet's problem, nothing I can do.

Is there any benefit of this compared to the steam link if you're running 1080p?
CampGareth to milky228
17 Nov 15#35
Only that it is a powerful android device in itself, doesn't need a PC to run emulators, play asphalt 8, watch netflix, whatever. Oh and you could stream from Nvidia Grid if you paid them money.

NVIDIA Shield Android TV now comes with a free remote
The free remote is only being offered for a limited time with the Shield Android TV, according to NVIDIA's site, but there's no word on when the promotion will expire.
Steam links don't require a powerful PC - whilst your PC does do the video encoding, there are no minimum hardware requirements. Basically, if your PC can run the game you want to play, it can also stream it.
I don't see how this can let you run more demanding titles that your PC can't run if it's streaming from your PC (so that would be effectively making your PC run titles that it can't run, which doesn't make any sense). Also what does your internet connection have to do with anything?

Yeah, not all things are equal though. Just because you have 4 x 1Gbit ports doesn't mean you can max out each port, it just means that they handshake at that speed. A lot of other factors come into this that can cause potential speed issues.
I can Steam stream my PC to my N270 ION Netbook (wifi) and play most games at 720p fine. (the netbook is stuck at 720p :P )
My setup is my 1st router is a DHCP server, Firewall and access point, the 2nd router is just an access point. Everything else is connected to the switch. This is the switch I own
