*** ALL WII GAMES ARE FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE WII U ***
So are GameCube games too but you'd need to "unlock" the Wii Mode in order to do so.

Check GBATemp those guys know all about it. I've thought about it but I have an "unlocked" Wii with an SD Card so I'm alright.

You're best off going down to a second hand shop, you'll probably find a Wii going for about £10, but GC controllers will possibly cost more.

It is not difficult but it does require having an exploitable Wii game and the method is slightly different depending on the game you use, so make sure you read through a tutorial a few times before going ahead so that you don't make any mistakes. There is the chance of bricking the vWii (virtual Wii - the Wii U's Wii mode) but the tutorial should have you make a NAND backup first so that you'd be able to recover from a brick - but obviously you'd be better off if you get it right the first time!
If you don't want to risk it then bare in mind that you could get a second hand Wii for £10-20 and that would play GameCube games from disc as-is, or you could softmod it and get it to play GC and Wii games from a USB drive.
It's frustrating - Nintendo could have so easily made the Wii U run GameCube games from the disc drive natively. I thought maybe they'd done that so that they could sell GameCube games digitally on the eShop, but nope. So I'm glad we have Nintendont but, yeah, it's not a simple case of 'unlocking' it.

The Wii U will never play GameCube discs.
it will play GameCube and wii isos if it is hacked. not "unlocked" "jail broken" or whatever.
really stupid statement to make on a post with cheap wii games. :s

Thanks a bunch, Slain. I'm sure no one would ever figure out what "unlock" would have meant but now they do.

Thats Entertainment used to be great for getting cheap games for the PSP & 360 etc, but the site runs like a dog now. You tell it you want to see all titles at £1.99, and you get a whole bunch of different pricepoints thrown in with the results.

Nintendo is like a kid batting blindly at a pinata lately. A lot to learn, and totally oblivious to how the gaming market has changed.
Offering GBA, DS and Snes digitally on the Wii U, but not the 3DS... Still no trophies or achievements, despite them rolling out "accomplishments" to the streetpass square years ago... They're a really confused company.
I hope the NX rectifies so many issues I have right now, because I love and support the company, but I also have Sony consoles, and lately, quite a bit of my money has been going there... Nintendo wise, I've bought 54 amiibo this year (yes, ridiculous. That just hit me the other day). But Sony isn't perfect either. They pick up only the balls Nintendo drops, then runs off to play a different game entirely...
But yes, the Wii U easily could have taken gamecube discs. But it doesn't. :disappointed: buuuut...
Have an old Wii handy. get an Wii2HDMI adapter from ebay for about a tenner. The quality output with this is higher than my official Wii component was, and it's indistinguishable from the Wii U's wii mode. That right there will allow the best play of old cube titles.

Let's see, you actually think it'd be OK to write on the main post as:
"You can play GameCube games for free on your Wii U by hacking the vWii with the following tools and then here's how to use Nintendont which is what you'll need to play GameCube titles." not illegal at all.
