Please be aware ,this camera is great but it has a major flaw.After doing huge research I bought this for my daughter and returned it after the rear lcd stopped working ( upgraded to a d5300). It is a sensor fault that Nikon has no answer to as yet ( mine was returned 3 weeks after purchase but you could have problems out of warranty)and you can view on YouTube for yourself.It is a random fault and it does not affect them all but it affected ours...good luck.

When you first puts the code in, it will show the discount but if the code is "invalid", it does not tell you this until the very final stage of checkout. I haven't tried this code so do not know for sure if it does or does not work. Definitely worth a try though.
Grey imports - difficult to say how "safe" they are. I got my camera from Pixel without any problems - may be different if I have to make a warranty claim with them.

For the next few days Rakuten are doing 25x superpoints so the D3300 can be purchased for £280 and you get £70 worth of superpoints (which would have to be spent on Rakuten) but you could put this towards maybe some accessories or xmas pressies. Worth considering if you don't mind a grey import.
There is also a code for 15% off (SUPER1) but that does not apply to technology but might be worth a try anyway.

Agree, and the rather sad fact of the matter is the sub-£300 camera will take photos identical to the £2000 camera 95% of the time. Very few buyers of the £2000 camera will ever need the 5% incremental capability of their beast over the cheapo £300 counterpart, but hell they will want one nonetheless!!

Thank you for your response. I have decided to stick with a UK stock, as after £20 cashback from Nikon, it comes down to £279 from either Jessops or John Lewis (price matched with Jessops). Amazon.de is around £263 even after using a card without a non-Sterling transaction fee, so for the sake of few quid it seems better to have that additional 1 year warranty.

I am undecided whether the £50ish difference would make up for the 2nd year free UK warranty. Would you think that saving circa £50 would be better than the 1 year warranty? It seems like UK stocks are entitled to free 2 year warranty, whereas EU come with the standard 1 year. Any input would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

The removal of the anti aliasing filter will greatly improve image quality over the D3200....the newer processor & software will have a similar effect, along with an increase from 4fps to 5fps for anyone shooting sports....additionally the improved ISO from a max 12800 to 25600 will help in low light situations.....frame rates for video are also increased & an extra 140 shots before needing to change the battery

This is a very versatile camera with options to expand with relatively inexpensive but good quality glass in the future (for example the outstanding fast and clear prime 35mm) if she gets more interested in photography. I have the d3200 and cant fault it for the money and this is better. I have had canon, pentax, olympus, leica etc but for the money you really wont do much better

Definitely agreed that for sports Canon's high end crops have the edge, I will miss my 70D's AF performance dearly! The 645Z feels a little redundant in a discussion on cameras for a beginner, however :P

Regarding the HX60 you've recommended above, while excellent for a point-and-shoot/superzoom it's excellent, it is still stuck the tiny sensor and lens of those types of cameras. If that user is looking to move into SLR territory for the improvement to IQ, I think they would be disappointed.

As cashback is not available on the German camera, personally I'd save myself about £40 by buying a grey import (provided the seller pays any import duty or tax). It's unlikely, I think, that anything will go wrong with such a camera in the first year, so the guarantee wouldn't be much use anyway.

Cool. Well, from Tesco Direct's website the best options for £350 would be either the Canon 100D or Fuji XA-2. The Fuji is what's known as a mirrorless camera, which means it has DSLR-level image quality and uses interchangeable lenses like a DSLR, but it doesn't have the mirror box that DSLRs need for their optical viewfinders. This means the cameras can be a lot smaller, but can't have an optical viewfinder so instead use electronic viewfinders or (in the case of the XA-2) no viewfinder at all. Between the two the Fuji is smaller and lighter, while the 100D has better ISO performance (which allows the camera to take better photos in low light without getting as grainy), better physical controls and better autofocus while still being very small for a DSLR (it's the smallest true SLR in the world).

Spending under £200 to get DSLR-quality will mean buying used or buying grey. On the used market you have a huge amount of options which makes it difficult to make specific recommendations, but looking on eBay getting a Nikon D3200 for about that price looks doable. Otherwise sites like mpb.com offer great selections of used DSLRs. They will all get you better image quality than you'll get from a phone or point and shoot camera will, even a lens/body combo costing under £100, but the cheaper the go the more you'll be compromising on features, autofocus and low light performance. Alternatively upping your budget to £250 gets you back into buying new, with options like the D3200 and Sony A5000.

Within your range from Tesco I'd actually find myself suggesting the Sony DSC-HX60...fairly compact, good range of features, 20Mp sensor & 30x optical zoom (G series) lens....around £190 at Tesco

Again, I think it does come down to each buyer's priorities. I was a Canon shooter up until literally yesterday, and find myself recommending their DSLRs to beginners slightly more often than Nikon because of the more robust feature sets and because when people say things like "I want to take loads of landscapes" or "I really want to try wildlife photography" without breaking the bank, it's Canon who facilitate this better with their great and inexpensive lens line up. However for those looking to invest in some good quality lenses, it's fairly well documented that the image quality of the sensor Nikon use in most of their crop sensor bodies is just about the best on the APS-C market, making it a better choice for people looking to take photos in controlled conditions such as portraiture where things like AF performance are less relevant.

This Nikon is basically geared to those starting with DSLR's

Just don't try shooting 4K video unless you want to damage the sensor with overheating, does not have true 14bit uncompressed raw & it has colour noise issues on longer exposures..

Add to that you only get an electronic EVF...and even the best suffer lag.....there is not the range of affordable pro end lenses etc

I think I understand what this person is saying. Germans don't pfaff around with charging a higher price and making customers claim cash back, they simply charge a lower price. Here in the UK we're charged full price and expected to claw back the cash back through hoops, frustrating delays, signing Magna Carta-esque pacts with 3rd party companies to whom you hand over your bank details etc etc.

All the reviews say its a good starter dslr. Accessories are cheap if you go for non-genuine Nikon ones eg batteries, cases and remotes are relatively cheap on ebay.
I would not dismiss the VR kit over the VR 2 lens - some reviews prefer the older lens.
If you are happy to buy a grey import there are companies like Portusdigital, HDEW, Pixelelectronics (on Rakuten) who have the D3300 vr2 kit for less. If you time it right you can get some very good discounts especially on Rakuten - I got the D5300 for £325 with £85 worth of rakuten points. The risk is that it is a grey import, so warranty is not honoured by Nikon UK and any warranty claims will be either with the seller or a third party.
