Currently £336 on amazon uk, £299 at Jessops, £329 at John Lewis.
359 Euros at Amazon.de and should be eligible for full EU warranty, so better than a grey import.

Germans are efficient, straight in at discounted price in Germany. British love bureaucracy, helpdesk and agents. Instead of giving £40 straight discount like the Germans, as illustration, the Brits choose to reduce this to £20 off cash back to customer and "waste" £20 to employ "donkeys" to administer giving out this £20 cash back.
(I got this £20 cash back last year, it was a £20 pre-paid credit card, therefore the "£20" was "wasted" like this: £5 admin for the pre-paid card and postage and delivery,
£10 for agent's transactional charge to operate this cash back scheme as it needs IT security, audit, health & safety, data protection, customer protection, surveys, fraud detection, quality checks, blah, blah, £5 on management and PR).

As cashback is not available on the German camera, personally I'd save myself about £40 by buying a grey import (provided the seller pays any import duty or tax). It's unlikely, I think, that anything will go wrong with such a camera in the first year, so the guarantee wouldn't be much use anyway.

Germany is in the EU. There will be no VAT or Import duty to pay. VAT and Import Duty are payable on items imported externally to the EU. Which is why you can visit http://www.thomann.de and buy whatever musical item you like and pay a flat rate shipping fee on any item and never get charged VAT or Import Duty. Items in the EU that are eligible for tax are included in the item fee and paid in the country of origin.
The simplified version of the above is; the price you see on this deal is the price you pay. Or you could go for the even more succinct explanation as given by our friend Besford below  Either way you won't be paying VAT or import duty.

If the lens on the Argos deal is the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II, then this is good for a kit lens. Acording to reviews it is slightly better than the VR lens, but not quite as good as the VRII. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-55mm-vr.htm

All the reviews say its a good starter dslr. Accessories are cheap if you go for non-genuine Nikon ones eg batteries, cases and remotes are relatively cheap on ebay.
I would not dismiss the VR kit over the VR 2 lens - some reviews prefer the older lens.
If you are happy to buy a grey import there are companies like Portusdigital, HDEW, Pixelelectronics (on Rakuten) who have the D3300 vr2 kit for less. If you time it right you can get some very good discounts especially on Rakuten - I got the D5300 for £325 with £85 worth of rakuten points. The risk is that it is a grey import, so warranty is not honoured by Nikon UK and any warranty claims will be either with the seller or a third party.

I think I understand what this person is saying. Germans don't pfaff around with charging a higher price and making customers claim cash back, they simply charge a lower price. Here in the UK we're charged full price and expected to claw back the cash back through hoops, frustrating delays, signing Magna Carta-esque pacts with 3rd party companies to whom you hand over your bank details etc etc.

Both have their own advantages, depending on what your priorities are.
The Nikon's key advantage is being superior in most aspects pertaining to image quality- images can be more detailed, have a wider dynamic range, and less noise at higher ISOs. Coupled with some decent glass and an experienced photographer, the quality of Nikon's crop cameras over Canon's equivalents can be apparent in the end image, with the D3300's sensor also being used in Nikon's highest end crop sensor SLR, the 7200. It's a really excellent sensor for someone whose number one priority is getting the best stills possible, and if you don't branch out into more dynamic shooting types like sports or wildlife you may find the D3300 lasts you a lifetime without ever limiting you.
The Canon has a superior autofocus system composed entirely of more sensitive cross type AF points, it has a fully articulating touch screen, and an excellent selection of inexpensive lenses covering most core lens types- the classic "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.8 prime lens costs under £70 and the new STM version is under £100, the 55-250mm IS STM telephoto lens is arguably the sharpest budget telephoto on the market, and Canon have the awesome 10-18mm IS STM while no other brand on the market has a autofocus equipped, image stabilised ultra-wide angle lens that retails for under £200. There's also the phenomenal 24mm and 40mm pancakes too. For an amateur looking to try lots of different kinds of photography, you can build a solid small collection of lenses that will let you achieve good shots in virtually any scenario.

It depends on what parts of the camera are most important to you. The Canon 100D is probably the most similar competitor in terms of price, size, and features, but any of the "triple digit" Canon cameras from the 600D onwards will be comparable in differing degrees as compact, enthusiast-oriented DSLRs.

Just don't try shooting 4K video unless you want to damage the sensor with overheating, does not have true 14bit uncompressed raw & it has colour noise issues on longer exposures..
Add to that you only get an electronic EVF...and even the best suffer lag.....there is not the range of affordable pro end lenses etc
The Canon still wins for most (including me)

ElGofre
1 Nov 152#58
Again, I think it does come down to each buyer's priorities. I was a Canon shooter up until literally yesterday, and find myself recommending their DSLRs to beginners slightly more often than Nikon because of the more robust feature sets and because when people say things like "I want to take loads of landscapes" or "I really want to try wildlife photography" without breaking the bank, it's Canon who facilitate this better with their great and inexpensive lens line up. However for those looking to invest in some good quality lenses, it's fairly well documented that the image quality of the sensor Nikon use in most of their crop sensor bodies is just about the best on the APS-C market, making it a better choice for people looking to take photos in controlled conditions such as portraiture where things like AF performance are less relevant.

Within your range from Tesco I'd actually find myself suggesting the Sony DSC-HX60...fairly compact, good range of features, 20Mp sensor & 30x optical zoom (G series) lens....around £190 at Tesco
Cool. Well, from Tesco Direct's website the best options for £350 would be either the Canon 100D or Fuji XA-2. The Fuji is what's known as a mirrorless camera, which means it has DSLR-level image quality and uses interchangeable lenses like a DSLR, but it doesn't have the mirror box that DSLRs need for their optical viewfinders. This means the cameras can be a lot smaller, but can't have an optical viewfinder so instead use electronic viewfinders or (in the case of the XA-2) no viewfinder at all. Between the two the Fuji is smaller and lighter, while the 100D has better ISO performance (which allows the camera to take better photos in low light without getting as grainy), better physical controls and better autofocus while still being very small for a DSLR (it's the smallest true SLR in the world).
Spending under £200 to get DSLR-quality will mean buying used or buying grey. On the used market you have a huge amount of options which makes it difficult to make specific recommendations, but looking on eBay getting a Nikon D3200 for about that price looks doable. Otherwise sites like mpb.com offer great selections of used DSLRs. They will all get you better image quality than you'll get from a phone or point and shoot camera will, even a lens/body combo costing under £100, but the cheaper the go the more you'll be compromising on features, autofocus and low light performance. Alternatively upping your budget to £250 gets you back into buying new, with options like the D3200 and Sony A5000.
ElGofre
1 Nov 15#68
Definitely agreed that for sports Canon's high end crops have the edge, I will miss my 70D's AF performance dearly! The 645Z feels a little redundant in a discussion on cameras for a beginner, however :P
Regarding the HX60 you've recommended above, while excellent for a point-and-shoot/superzoom it's excellent, it is still stuck the tiny sensor and lens of those types of cameras. If that user is looking to move into SLR territory for the improvement to IQ, I think they would be disappointed.
corred1964

I agree but using Tesco vouchers would surely restrict them to a Tesco purchase.....and for a good camera only for holiday use etc the Sony should do the job

The removal of the anti aliasing filter will greatly improve image quality over the D3200....the newer processor & software will have a similar effect, along with an increase from 4fps to 5fps for anyone shooting sports....additionally the improved ISO from a max 12800 to 25600 will help in low light situations.....frame rates for video are also increased & an extra 140 shots before needing to change the battery

Agree, and the rather sad fact of the matter is the sub-£300 camera will take photos identical to the £2000 camera 95% of the time. Very few buyers of the £2000 camera will ever need the 5% incremental capability of their beast over the cheapo £300 counterpart, but hell they will want one nonetheless!!

Nice Amazon add in item to use with this Nikon camera which I posted earlier, a shutter release
What size memory card is recommended for this camera? I understand it's a bit horses for courses but what do people usually get?
Also, what case/bag would you recommend for it? (Preferably something compact). Thanks

It varies from person to person. D3300 RAW files weigh in at around 20MB each, so a bog standard 16GB card will hold approximately 800 shots. This is absolutely fine for most shooters who will rarely get through that many shots in one day and will be backing up their photos regularly. However if you're going to be using the camera permanently in continuous mode and doing lots of sporting/events photography shooting in RAW+JPEG mode then you will want a larger card, while if you're a very casual shooter who doesn't want to do any editing and just use out-of-camera JPEGs then a 4GB card will still hold 400 JPEGs in maximum quality settings.
Assuming you mean the K-50, it would definitely be my choice for somebody wanting to do fast paced styles of photography like sports/wildlife shooting. It's got faster continuous shooting, a better autofocus system and larger viewfinder, it's weather sealed and has in-body image stabilisation. At the same time it's still a body that's user-friendly and great for beginners to learn on.
However it depends on your budget since Pentax's cheapest telephoto lens, which you'll definitely need for taking shots of distant subjects, costs over £300 on its own, making it potentially quite an expensive starting kit (although you should definitely consider buying used if that retail price would put you outside of your budget, tonnes of photographers buy everything they use second hand). Conversely Canon and Nikon have relatively inexpensive but high quality tele lenses to go with their inexpensive bodies. So while I would definitely recommend a K-50 for the sort of things you want to do, it may be a case that it's not within your budget.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but I want to get into the world of dlsr. Mainly for nature, birds, aviation and sports still pics. Saw also a deal on pentax d-50...my question is: for a total beginner which sort of camera could be a good choice? Sorry if wrong place to post question

Anyone have any lense recommendations for the D3300... Looking to do landscape, waterscape, cats, moon and aurora.
Try to find one second hand/grey market for closer to your budget, or look into Samyang's wide angle manual focus lenses (since you'll be using it for landscapes that don't move very much, not having autofocus isn't a major issue).
For taking photos of your cat around the house, the D3300's kit lens would be fine, or you could get a 35mm or 50mm prime lens for shallow depth of field. For getting close-ups of the moon, then get a 55-200mm or 55-300mm telephoto lens.
A bit rich for me at the moment but have saved the links thank you.

For the next few days Rakuten are doing 25x superpoints so the D3300 can be purchased for £280 and you get £70 worth of superpoints (which would have to be spent on Rakuten) but you could put this towards maybe some accessories or xmas pressies. Worth considering if you don't mind a grey import.
There is also a code for 15% off (SUPER1) but that does not apply to technology but might be worth a try anyway.

Sorry for the bad news rob but my understanding is that although HDEW have premises in the UK they are a grey importer, hence their own 3 year warranty (not a Nikon one) and it will not be eligible for Nikon cashback.....
It mentions it in their FAQ but it is not something you are likely to spot unless you looking. UK Cashback schemes
Please note that our products do not qualify for Nikon UK, Canon UK and other UK cashback offers or promotions which Nikon, Canon and other brands limit to selected UK retailers.

When you first puts the code in, it will show the discount but if the code is "invalid", it does not tell you this until the very final stage of checkout. I haven't tried this code so do not know for sure if it does or does not work. Definitely worth a try though.
Grey imports - difficult to say how "safe" they are. I got my camera from Pixel without any problems - may be different if I have to make a warranty claim with them.

Please be aware ,this camera is great but it has a major flaw. After doing huge research I bought this for my daughter and returned it after the rear lcd stopped working ( upgraded to a d5300). It is a sensor fault that Nikon has no answer to as yet ( mine was returned 3 weeks after purchase but you could have problems out of warranty)and you can view on YouTube for yourself. It is a random fault and it does not affect them all but it affected ours...good luck.

Don't be fooled into going thru Amazon thinking you're doing a seller with Amazon fulfilled a favour. I have just found out to my cost cashback is not given to UK merchant sellers on Amazon, whether they have a Nikon dealership or high Street presence is irrelevant . Too many ways to get shafted online nowadays.

I don't think they were comparing it to this deal.
Anyone looking in a sub £300 camera thread won't care. Anyone spending £2,000 will have done their homework and know what they want.
Camera World are doing for 279 inc carry bag
Add to that you only get an electronic EVF...and even the best suffer lag.....there is not the range of affordable pro end lenses etc
The Canon still wins for most (including me)
This Nikon is basically geared to those starting with DSLR's
Also all EU countries have 2 year warranty by law. I don't understand how UK as a part of EU has only one year ?

Regarding the HX60 you've recommended above, while excellent for a point-and-shoot/superzoom it's excellent, it is still stuck the tiny sensor and lens of those types of cameras. If that user is looking to move into SLR territory for the improvement to IQ, I think they would be disappointed.
How do you enjoy foreseeing your shot with your ovf? Oh wait...
Didn't think so...

and how much is the delivery from Germany to here?
and does it make a difference to anything that I'm a Prime member?
Delivery from Germany is about an few euros.
No, PRIME is for UK (not Germany)
Note that the final price is a bit extra, since German VAT (MWST) is 19% whereas UK is 20%.
I even got 4 years out of my first Canon 300D
I actually own & use a number of different brands & types of Camera.....I currently own models from Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Canon, Olympus & Fuji .....personally & for my main use I find the Canon SLR to be the best for the job for me....but I do also own Sony SLT & Panasonic CSC cameras which I use for other purposes
I'm not knocking any other brands.....I know there are benefits & disadvantages with them all.......but I'll stick with my Canon's & L lenses for 80% of my camera use
