Once you factor in the 5 year guarantee & 15% Quidco I think it's a great price for an excellent TV.

hot hot price

what i h8 is the stupid leg stands they seem to be doing recently wont fit my tv spot as the legs are over the edge where it would sit...... why cant they just have a centre stand or one long solid stand, would love to know who came up with these stupid leg ideas that means you need a tv stand the length of how far the legs are which is the entire tv in most cases long.

That's why I went with a Samsung curved job; the curved stand is much shorter than the TV width, and actually very flattering.

Which would you go for out of lg55uf850v or lg49uf850 and why. I went into currys today to grab a black Friday barging but could not decide the two size. Is the lg55 UF850V worth the extra £ 200 for the for 5he extra 6 iniches over the lg49uf850v.The room it will be going in is 11 by 9 feet.

How true is it that 55 inches should be the minimum to enjoy.

The room that the tv will be going in is 2.85 by 3.35 metres. With this measurement in mind, which of the lg 49uf850v or 55 uf850 is suited to my room measurement.
brookysm
28 Nov 15 #42
The 49" is plenty in a room that size unless you're wanting a real wow. My personal plan was 49" 4k to see myself through till HDR and OLED was sensible and then go a bit bigger to 55" and my rooms very similar but having put 48" in the bedroom which is a smaller size I'm not so sure I want to go above 50" now on the living room.
ibl0010
28 Nov 15 #43
Would 55" be an over skill for my room size then. I suppose the option to get the 49" and save 200 is very tempting.

Doesn't current 4k have HDR ? What is HDR ?

I heard the benefit of 3d and 4k is only enjoyable and noticeable on 55" as a minimum, does this mean 49" 3d 4k is small to enjoy 4k and notice the difference between 4k and 1080p.

Out of lg 49uf850v, samsung ue50ju6800, lg 49uf690 which is the best 4k set in terms of picture quality and which set has the best 1080p upscale processing.
karpy
28 Nov 15 1 #44
Went into store to look at these TVs. The first thing I noticed was that thelg 49uf690's actual TV unit is much thicker. The other two are slim sets and look more modern. But there is a benefit to thicker sets they tend to have a better back light setup but this was unoticible in store.

The 850v is obviously the more premium set out of the LGs you'll also find that it has Harman Kardon speakers that currys forgets to mention.

Between this and the Sammy it's a toss up. There is a chance the Sammy will have a VA matrix depending on where it was manufactured but most likely both sets will be IPS.
stelac196
28 Nov 15 #46
Is the stand really 1100mm as the tv is only 1095mm wide and the picture clearly shows the stand stops well short of the end of the tv?
carlalston
28 Nov 15 #47
Ok it's 1095mm, just re-measured with the help of my missus (I have the 55" model and the stand fits both ) . The tv illustrated is the 55" model.
brookysm
28 Nov 15 1 #49
I don't think it has tho it may be possible in a further update. HDR or High Dynamic Range is an increase in colour vibrancy that's supposed to improve visible detail and more realistic colours. I can't see the point of it with current LED tech as most screens can't do the full range HDR is supposed to offer, its also not a finalised standard yet with a couple of formats doing the round so I'd be weary of buying a set that does offer it atm. It wouldn't (and hasn't stopped me from jumping into 4k tho as it not a requirement and my be a couple of years before it becomes adopted in any major way yet anyway) as you'll still see an increased viewing quality over normal HD and obviously a lot more via 4k sources.

There's a lot of talk over distances where you will see the benefit of 4k depending on the size but I have a 49" and 48" 4k TV and I bought my parents a 42" one and you can see an improved picture over a further distance than graphs that seem to be touted around as fact from much greater distances than they claim. There's 2 ways of looking at it, one is seeing the actual addition pixels in action, the other is seeing the more realistic images those pixels are producing.

I know what my eyes have seen as opposed to what a graph says I shouldn't and personally from my own experience those graphs should simply be ignored - view one in Currys and you'll see for yourself.

Can't say what the Sammy looks like but the UB850 (last years version of this TV) is 1st rate and LG have been brilliant at continually improving the firmware ironing out quirks.
ibl0010
28 Nov 15 #50
Thanks for the detailed response. Is the lg 49 / 55 uf850v model entry or mid range 4k level.
brookysm
28 Nov 15 #51
Higher mid range, think it's the highest LED model they do, there's a 950 as well but i don't know if that's been offed in the UK this time round which is the same set with a small sub speaker built in but that's the only difference.

28 Nov 15 #56
You have to be bang on at the right angle with mine or you get crosstalk in 3d at the extremities of the screen. Usually have my 3d set at 2m iirc but I don't think I've watched anything in 3d on it in over 12 months. Note the plus thing about 4k TV's with passive 3d is you get a full 1080 display as passive cuts the resolution in half on 1080 sets.
ibl0010
28 Nov 15 1 #57
I suppose it doesn't really matter if one goes for active or passive 3d on a 4k tv. If the claim of 4k is 4 times the resolution of 1080p is true, passive 3d will still be getting 2 times the resolution of 1080p on a 4k tv. Well that's my logic any way.

as you said passive 3d on a 1080p tv cuts the resolution in half so your not actually getting full 1080p.

Nice tv; couple of issues with it though (I've owned one for about a year now)

The local led dimming is terrible, turn it off. Unfortunately this then means the led backlight is on constantly means the blacks are not blackp, more grey.

The 3D performance isn't that great either. For some reason even though it's passive the tv gives cross talk?!? I've fiddled and fiddled and fiddled and I can't get rid of it; it's not so bad as to make me not watch 3D but I was really disappointed by its performance.

Apart from those two things the to is good. 4K performance is pretty nice and colours are vibrant.

For the money it's probably worth it (I paid a shade under 900 for it)

carlalston to happylarry
29 Nov 15 #77
You get 2 pairs of 3d glasses, the one from the cinema work fine.
As for Dual Play you need Dual Play Glasses or make your own, one pair has to have 2 left lenses, the other with 2 right lenses. It works well but the image can looked stretched and there's no way of adjusting it, unless there is an option in game, as far as I know only Black Ops 2 fully suported Dual Play.

The problem with this tv is the picture quality and it has a huge stand . Also its pretty laggy as it only has a single core processor . Deep blacks are rubbish as it's an ips screen . The picture quality is pretty abysmal for a 4k tv .

Oh and if you paid £649 at currys with a quidco price of 13% don't forget you have to take into account that it only applies to the sale price before uk tax which ends up being £541 -13% (£70 roughly) and for some reason quidco will only initially give you around £5 but hopefully that will go up to the £70 once confirmed.

The tv is quad core fella. I'd suggest reducing the brightness and backlight down to below the 60 mark for better blacks.

jdstarzx
4 Dec 15 #126
No no i do like this tv . I have bought it and will keep it . I just have to point out the flaws of this tv .

Bad points = picture quality . Turning over channels is slow and annoying . The back lights are abysmal causing black backgrounds to look white/gray. Overall laggyness of the system is a problem as it only has a single core processor so things get slow fast .

Good points = sound quality is amazing .

I kno that makes it look like i hate this tv but i am just being truthful . As i said i have bought this from currys and will keep it . But staight away i can see this isn't the best tv around .

Does anyone have any suggested settings for optimising the picture?
carlalston to dwl99

I've not really sat down and optimised my tv, many people suggest getting the Disney WOW or Spears and Munsil calibration Blu Ray disk to optimise your tv.
Some information could be found on AV Forums

5 Dec 15 #136
Hmm why would lg Tell me themselfs that it has a single core processor ? I did give them the correct model number twice just to make sure . What's even more of a puzzle is why does it lag when going in and out of menus if it infact does have a quad core chip .. thats really annoying me
kzee
5 Dec 15 #137
I have just opened the box after reading all of this single core quad core discussion and
I am impressed by the picture quality.

I have upgraded from LG 32LH3000 which I was using few hours earlier and there is huge difference not only in size but also in picture quality for me.

I was looking to buy samsung 6800 which I finalised but later bought this one.

If you upgraded from a 32inch tv to a 49inch 4k tv you are bound to be seriously impressed with the picture quality lol . Wow that's a massive jump in tv size mate . Well done indeed  . I must admit the tv is warming on me each new day that passes . I was watching the snooker on it after spending about 30 mins on the picture settings and it did look great .

Does anyone else find that it is pretty slow going into menus and changing channels ?

Has your quidco tracked. I used a similar discount but its only tracking at 1% currently. No one else on here has confirmed tracking at the higher level yet never mind received, that i have seen, so you would be the first on that.

Until the cashback is received you haven't bought at that price as the cashback is not guaranteed!

I dont believe i insulted you at any point. Good for you that you got such a great deal without using cashback. A true bargain. I have been a member on here for a little while. Whenever someone states they have achieved a fantastic buy they are very often asked to explain how they got it. Sort of what the site is for really! You obviously get a far better than 8% staff discount if you didn't use cashback but i dont doubt that you are totally correct. Sorry if i upset you.

Well guys i am sending mine back to currys .

Reasons are as follows ..

It developed a screen fault with vertical lines across the screen . After 2 weeks !!!

The passive 3d is terrible with huge ghosting on some parts of the screen when watching 3d bluerays

Every time i change channels its so god dam slow and getting into the tv guide is even slower

Overall laggyness when doing anything .

4k upscale is a total joke and gimmic .

The ips Screen's backlight is very noticable when changing channels even with l.e.d backlight dimming on full .

The lg magic remote would stop working whenever it choose to. Which is normaly about 4 times per day .

I will not miss this tv that's for dam sure !
kzee
14 Dec 15 #164
I bought this tele in size 49 and a friend bought the 55 inches at the same time. Both have no problems.

Upscaling is really good while watching hd channels from sky (and some sd channels) and bluray on sony s6500 with both upscaling on /off.

No crosstalk / ghosting for the 3d content and actually I now prefer passive 3d on this tele because I cant use my nvidia active shutter 3d glasses for more than few minutes on my laptop.

Yesterday, I played Call of duty black ops iii on my friends 55inch tele and did not notice any issue.

Yes! occasionally it gets laggy and the blacks are not as good as oled or va panels but not much of an issue for me.

To me it feels like you had a faulty tele which you have already said.

Have had the TV up & running for a week now and am very pleased with it. The WebOS interface is very nice and it has a good selection of apps, including Google Play, Wuaki TV, Youtube etc. Plex would be nice but maybe that's in the pipeline! I bought a stand with bracket fixing from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0185TN130?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 which looks great with the TV.

I am thinking about getting the 49 inch model, I currently have a 50 inch plasma Samsung. Losing the 1 inch should not make a difference? Or should I go for the 55 inch?
dwl99
16 Dec 15 #167
Depends on the size of your room and whether you think your other half will let you get away with the bigger one. There's no perceptible difference between 49" and 50".

I bought this TV and keep having issues with the screen. It blinks black randomly when watching something on my G-Box, and for the last couple of days I've noticed flickering on normal tv too but only the bottom half of the screen or like a shifting effect(?). No other problems, sound is great, remote and webOS are great. I do really like the TV :disappointed:
Hope everyone else is enjoying this TV but has anyone had any similar issues?

Well had mine 3 weeks and it's started playing up :disappointed: seems to be since the lg update last week it's gone very laggy and flashes black while watching TV also I have a white line at the very top of the screen. I called currys customer services who agreed it to be faulty and told me to return it to the store with a returns code only to get to the store to be told the code means nothing and they will need to test it for 30 mins I'm now sat waiting while they get lg to give them the code to refund as they now agree it's 100% faulty but they are hard work to deal with :disappointed:
