Why yes. Yes it would. It would also have the added benefit of smelling delicious the harder you work. Who could wish for a better incentive.
Those more sickly in the office may start to experience chest tightness, so best keep an epipen close to hand.

Would peanut butter (smooth, not crunchy) do the same job?

Just so long as everything makes good contact and you're not forcing anything to be where it shouldn't then I can't imagine there's anything wrong with adding it.

Thank - it's an AMD Quad Core Processor - thinking maybe it didn't have the gunk? Is there any harm in adding some if it originally didn't have it?

I don't have the PC version of CPUZ in front of me at the moment, 'cos I'm on a different machine, but my phone has a tab that says "Thermal" and it lists the temp of each core. You can check it whilst the PC is reasonably idle then check it when the fan is on. If your CPU is Intel then you can check the specs on their Ark page. If AMD, then their site should say what the proper envelope is.
The thermal gunk will make a difference, but be aware some CPUs don't have any paste. Instead they have a sticky tab. Some of the lower spec CPUs for example AMD 5350 has one of these. I've not built many high-end things lately, so I can't comment about those.
Let us know if there's anything else. I'm no expert by any means, but I'm happy to help as I'm sure many other more prolific PC builders on here will be too.

Thanks - so, if there is no thermal paste evident, would it really make a lot of difference? Also, I have downloaded and run the CPUZ but where/what results am I looking for? Thanks.

Yes, i would say this would be a nice little laptop for word processing and general school tasks. Its very portable too which is a big plus.

I wonder how this holds up against the Acer C720 chromebook. I use mine for general browsing and chrome casting.

The wrist strap is irrelevant as you would not be the potential source of the static, unless your hoovers nozzle is conductive from the nozzle end to where you're holding it.
It's better to move the computers somewhere that isnt carpeted, use compressed air and make a little mess, then hoover that little bit up than it is to jam a hoover in there for the sake of ease

Bing is just search engine its nothing to do with the actual operating system, it would just equate to Windows 10 standard ver.

Someone on a previous thread did mention they bought one of these from this retailer and it never came with Windows Pro just Home version, so anyone thinking its a good way to get Windows 10 Pro will be disappointed!

Other places selling it says it comes with Windows 8.1 with Bing 64-bit.
It sure could. Also if you've recently removed the heatsink and put it back on then there might be bits of oxidised/crusty gunk. The only way to be sure us to check on a bit of software like cpuz to get your temp. If it is on the high side for the spec of your CPU then strip it all down, clean and reapply thermal paste etc. A nice relaxing Sunday afternoon's work!
Before that check all your fan connections to make sure they're wired the right way round etc

Thanks - but wouldn't use a hoover though because of the static as someone else has said. It is clean inside as I fitted a new power supply recently and cleaned it all out then though - could the processor need more heat-reducing paste or whatever it's called?

Isn't there some issue with the stream & not being able to upgrade to W10

I bought the one on offer from Microsoft a few weeks ago and lost many hours trying to upgrade it. I reached the stage of ringing the HP help desk (you're allowed one free call for one installation issue) and they basically told me to stop trying and return it. You'll find guides online to show you how to get the upgrade to work if you want to try.

this is a very sensible suggestion, spring cleaning a PC can really help with temperatures

Aye, maybe - but so long as you're wearing a wrist-strap and are properly earthed and the plastic doesn't come into contact with anything crucial you'll be fine. I find that compressed air makes a helluva mess and you end up having to brush out all the stuff anyway, which risks further static.

would recommend a cheap can or compressed air over a hoover, not worth risking the static discharge

I will second this..... Dell XPS One all-in-one was soooo sloooow - opened it up, thick dust, cleaned it up. Worked great after that.

Anyone have an experience of purchasing from them/issues resolved if required? I have a desktop PC at home which is playing up (fan on all the time, slowing right down) and a laptop which isn't much better! Have a decent laptop solely for work and an iPad, but wouldn't mind a cheap laptop for personal use - web browsing/Word etc. I know I can use Word on the iPad now and I do have a keyboard for it, but miss using a mouse for easy cutting/pasting etc. when doing something a little more serious.
Thanks.

You will pull you hair in frustration of slow rendering; after opening 4 tabs and trying to run iPlayer

A word of, probably obvious advice here. Have you opened the case and hoovered out the fan and heat-sink.
We had a PC at work and I swear to God, it looked like a cat was living in it - there was a massive build-up of fluff in the fan, vents and cooler. It was better insulated than my roof.
Once we hoovered it out, it was much better.

Very tempting.
At least it doesn't have a pink case like some of these models. :-)
