I've been looking for a laptop for a while and as a student I am seriously considering buying this for 589.
It says the FHD version - is the screen THAT much of a difference?
Can anybody tell how they've been getting on? Particularly if they've managed to avoid the backlight bleeding?

Just so you know, HP are stocking the FHD model (identical in every way except the screen resolution) for £590 in their student store! Given that equivalent specs start at £900ish from other brands, I think I'm going to go for the envy. (And personally, I also can't stand Macs and I don't like Lenovo's keyboard, so that doesn't leave me much choice!)
I don't know how long the deal will be up, but £590 looks very good for these specs!

Received mine today. Very happy. Can't see any issue with the screen. Very tiny bit of backlight bleeding on one spot in bottom right, but only visible when screen completely black. Trackpad works fine, better than my Dell Inspirion actually. Keyboard is solid, no flex. Speakers decent for voice, and good volume. Screen is nice and bright. Solid build. Can't fault it so far. Will see how the battery fairs when it's been charged.
One bad thing. Is the keyboard layout is ANSI and not ISO. Which means small enter key, and moved \ and # key. Which is extremely annoying as I use them a lot. Anyone else got this laptop with the ISO layout? I wonder if the "na" in the name means North America. Wondering if there's an ISO european layout version.
Edit: Battery life seems fine. 30 mins of browsing web over wifi, about 2/3 brightness, battery only went down 6%.
Spoke to HP, and apparently this layout is the "UK" version. So I guess they make one layout and label the keys accordingly. The keyboard is nice. Better than the one on my Inspirion 7537, just a shame about the enter and # / keys.

RE: The random backlight bleeding seems to be an issue, but not one everyone seems to be experiencing.
I've seen 5 (one from online shop, 4 in the shop when wanted to exchange) -> 5 out of 5 HD+ with bleeding... (not my idea of randomness).
The only one OK was FHD matte with 4GB/128GB (cheaper as well about £100)

The random backlight bleeding seems to be an issue, but not one everyone seems to be experiencing. Everything else I suspect is a matter of software issues. Graphics drivers, trackpad, and microphone I'm guessing will be fixable by software updates. As I've had issues like that before and it was a matter of finding the right driver, usually something direct from the maker (eg Intel, Synaptics, Realtek, etc). Will report back when mine arrives in a couple days.
I'm happy to spend a day or so faffing about with drivers if it means I save £600!

Have you had a look at the comments on this page? Majority of issues users have stated, and there really aren't many professional reviews for this laptop.
Anyway what I noticed on mine is as soon as I booted up my new laptop I was welcomed with backlight bleeding,
then you have the not so responsive trackpad. The microphone that Skype doesn't pick up and overhearing/loud issues...
Tbh this laptop is extremely poorly built, don't let the metal housing fool you.

I've just pulled the trigger.
I searched high and low for a good spec highly portable laptop, and nothing comes close to this laptop for price/performance. Everything else with the same spec (i5-6200u, 8gb, 256gb SSD) is roughly at least £200 more. Everyone else seems to jack the price up in the hundreds for that jump from 4-8gb or 128gb-256gb.

Mine arrived on Tuesday and I'm still on the fence. Build quality seems good and there's no screen problems but I'm moving from a MacBook and Windows 10 is taking a bit of getting used to.
It's not quite as fast as I had hoped (in comparison with a 3.5 year old MacBook Air), the fan comes on too much for my liking, keyboard and trackpad aren't as good and the cast to smart to isn't working yet so a few niggles.

OK, let us know what you find please, must be quite a few of us searching for a good deal on a decent ultra type machine at this time of the year, my shortlist has the usual suspects of Macbook Pro or Air (still a bit confused whether the Air has a retina screen version available) or a Microsoft Surface Pro 3,but not averse to the prospect of choosing something from another manufacturer.

the one from HP is diagonal FHD IPS anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080)
the one from Currys is glossy HD+ Resolution 3200 x 1800 (step below 4K ?)
according to wiki:
7 High-Definition
7.1 nHD (640x360)
7.2 qHD (960x540)
7.3 HD (1280x720)
7.4 FHD (1920x1080)
7.5 WQHD (2560x1440)
7.6 WQXGA+ (3200x1800)
7.7 UHD 4K (3840x2160)
Anyway, as mine has suffered, unfortunately, from back-light bleeding which were worse the longer the machine was used (and been quite hot on the part between keyboard and hinges) and started to have problems with media (video and sound) it had to go back to Currys. Wanted to exchange but been presented with 2 another ones which both have suffered from same problem (one was visibly better but still not on for £600 machine) and both laptops on display were the same (one i7 and one i5). The third one on display had perfect screen - it was FHD mate version (same good panel as my old Envy DV6).
Am really disappointed as liked it quite. Now on the hunt for something better.

Received this laptop yesterday, first thing I noticed was the backlight bleeding, extremely annoying for me, just a poor build from HP seeming as everyone is having this issue. At first I thought nothing of it and believed HP would recall these models and fix them until I called technical support team literally 10 minutes ago, the guy on the phone told me that this is "in the internal specifications" of the laptop, when I asked where I can view this information because it wasn't stated when I purchased it, he simple replied you cant. No professionalism from HP at all. I've emailed them dozens of times and just received generalised replies, not even answering my questions. HP UK employees seem to have the "so what" ethic. If you're like me and value customer support I would suggest not buying this laptop. As it stands I have 14 days to return it, which I will and most probably go for a Macbook pro instead.
As for the laptop, the trackpad isnt as responsive as I would've liked, tried skyping and my friends couldn't hear me unless I was right agaisnt the mic, tried tweaking the settings but that didn't help.
Screen resolution is good but again with that backlight bleeding issue you will be annoyed 5 minutes into a movie. Not please with my £600 investment. Will without a doubt be returned.

My Envy 13 turned up yesterday. It's a great laptop apart from an issue I've had straight out of the box - there is a vertical line of blue pixels running down the screen.
After an hour on the online chat/phone this morning - and a bios update, I'm returning it for a full refund.
Disappointing given that I really liked the laptop. I'm just not willing to risk keeping it with only a 12 month warranty given that I had an issue on day 1.

I think it's likely any decent black Friday deals will be on the older non-skylake laptops which are kicking about in warehouses. If you don't need skylake, then I'd wait a couple of weeks and you'll hopefully get a great deal. If you really do want a skylake uktrabook, then this is probably as good a deal as you'll get for a while.
You can return it up to two weeks later so if a better deal pops up you aren't stuck with it.

Its just mine isn't lit?
Edit: Figured it out. The F5 key!
No apparent issues for me, in the process of updating Bios/Drivers and Windows. Will look at it properly after that.
Impressed with the look and feel.
i guess the above 2 were unlucky, but its to be expected. if a laptop deal goes hot onhere alot of sales will be involved and a few will get sent duds regardless of the brand/model
screens spot on with no noticeable backlight bleeding on mines, trackpad works fine. Screen bezel wasnt as big as it looks on the site pictures. Build quality is very nice
these are just first impressions
im gonna see how i get on with it for a week
After an hour on the online chat/phone this morning - and a bios update, I'm returning it for a full refund.
Disappointing given that I really liked the laptop. I'm just not willing to risk keeping it with only a 12 month warranty given that I had an issue on day 1.
We have a few XPS 13's (incl the one i'm typing on) but the price doesn't seem to drop much on those so this seems a good deal to me if the quality matches up.

how?
I think it's likely any decent black Friday deals will be on the older non-skylake laptops which are kicking about in warehouses. If you don't need skylake, then I'd wait a couple of weeks and you'll hopefully get a great deal. If you really do want a skylake uktrabook, then this is probably as good a deal as you'll get for a while.
You can return it up to two weeks later so if a better deal pops up you aren't stuck with it.

Skylake is only just having it's speed shift technology enabled which is what will really make the difference if actual use over previous core i generations.
are you sure you are referring to the correct model?
I got 15" Envy DV6 i7 from 2012 as my main PC and, boy, this one is really noisy
and I also got the one mentioned in this thread (for 4 days now) and can't say it's noisy - it belongs to my DD so I got no much first hand experience but it is really fast, silent, good viewing angle, light, and on top it looks sleek
got it for £609 after the code from Currys so £25 cheaper is a hot for me

1.36kg isn't too bad either. Reasonable cheaper alternative to the XPS 13.
HP says: this is the thinnest laptop weve ever made.
there is a 14 day return policy if you dont like it
Will see what its like when it arrives.
Otherwise it looks like a decent ultrabook for the price.
Looks like a decent spec for what appears to be a nice compact (or is that Compaq) ultrabook. Heat from me.
