This will be a first gen i7, There is no exactly 2.6ghz i7 offered on the 8440 range but I believe it will be the Intel Core i7-620M (dual core) or the 720M (which was quad core). This laptop is from 2010 so at this sort of money I think it is very expensive for what you get.
I have noted it has an SSD but this must be an aftermarket addition as this model only ever came with up to 256gb SSDs. That or they have mislabled it as they did offer 500gb mechanical drives with it. For me given it's age the machine is being sold because i7 as a brand is seen as being really fast, there's nothing wrong with it, but for nearly £300 I can't help but thing you can get a much better deal.
I'd much rather take a mechanical drive with a newer i7 and then add a new SSD that you know how much life it's going to have left.
There is no reason to go for i7 over an i5 (of course there are some 0.1% applications that would actually need an i7).
I7 would just creat overheating issues, especially on older gen cpus

You're most likely right, that was just from what I'd seen and yes, £140 buys the i5-520M models, the i7 would be slightly faster but we are talking about faster within the same generation of CPU so it isn't as much as it could be. For £275, I would really be looking to Sandy or Ivy Bridge processors which are a real step-up.
The discrete graphics is of questionable value, it's the workstation version of the GeForce G210M which was about the same speed as an Intel HD3000 with the only real benefit being better drivers. The 900p screen is valuable but the ones HP install aren't all that.
But, I agree, I was making the same points as you. I suspect people saw 'i7' and just went nuts.

The computer is very good, or was but you can pick these up for about £140 now. The build quality is immense but no way is this worth more than £200 these days.
Even with the Core i7 (it will be the 620M by the way - this chassis cannot handle a quad-core, it's a dual-core w/HT = 4 threads) it isn't worth this price. The hard disk is an SSHD and frankly a small but pure SSD would be a better deal. Other posters have suggested good and better alternatives.
Because of the 3 year+ age now, a lot of very expensive machines (back before 2011) are becoming ex-lease and you can get a massive bargain but this machine isn't one of them.

£140 would be the i5-520m powered machines so not entirely comparable as they lack the dedicated graphics and most of the time also the uprated 900p screen.
Otherwise I totally agree, especially if this comes with an SSHD. I have no idea why this actually got any heat as I managed to find without any real effort a newer machine, with higher specification for within £10 of this machine and that would be with a real SSD.

I completely agree. I think it has a mechanical HD with a small cache. The i7 should still be pretty quick - I have an i3 from 2010, and it is not bad even now. However, compared to modern CPUs it does use a lot of battery (and fan). The same may apply to the GPU. Lack of touch-screen, decent resolution and portability means that this is overpriced.

Really old laptop. If I had a £275 budget I would not be spending it on this.

Not sure how this is a good deal as first gen i7 is ... ... ...

Meh, people getting blindly suckered by an 'i7' sticker as usual ...
Passmark on this is 2778, whereas for a typical last year laptop's i3 4100m, passmark is 3498.
I think first gen machines like this are uncompetitive and would choose either a current/last year i3, or second gen i5 2520M e.g Lenovo T420s often pop up at £200+ and have a passmark of 3549. You can find them with 1600x900 screens too. Fab build quality but heavy and limited battery life, just like this elitebook.
so for much the same money, strip the DVD drive, drop the 1TB HDD into an 'Ultrabay', and clone Windows to your choice of SSD. That's my config and it's storming!

This model has no SSD. It's a 500gb mecanical hybrid drive with 8gb buffer.

cold for on the basis that a laptop should be portable, and this will be as portable as a desktop given it will be reliant on always being powered on.

For me I'd pick this, buy a small SSD to go in it, get a DVD bay hard disk caddy for the old drive and end up with a laptop with better graphics, faster quad core processor, SSD, second hard drive and Full HD screen. All in about £10 more than this deal but in my opinion a better all round option.

Also HP say very much otherwise about the processor as per the spec sheets

Intel also agrees that if it is the 720 it will be a quad core with 8threads in HT.
