Well the xbox one headset will do both, because the chat adapter does both via 3.5mm. No clue about the 360 one.

Stupid question, but how do i know whether i need an adapter for xbox one? just bought a console for my son for christmas and this would be perfect to go with it

You need to check the controller. It needs a standard 3.5mm jack plug in it - looking at the bottom of the controller the 3.5mm jack socket is off-centre to the left if you have it. If there's just the connector socket then you will need to buy the headset adaptor which costs around £20.

if the controller has a 3.5mm jack point at the base you don't need one ..or if its brand new 1tb version you don't need one ..

Considering it covers both ears I'd be very surprised if it were chat-only.

Plus if it is one of the newer bundles (FIFA or more recent) it will be 3.5mm jack.

spend over 300 notes on a console to enjoy the experience of online gaming...and MS still have you by the balls if you want to talk to your friends, a headset adaptor wtf!

A lot of the consoles come with a headset and mic. This is an upgrade.

For Xbox One controllers without a 3.5mm headset input, the Microsoft headset adapter is required - sold separately.
