Launching on December 1, it offers people driving to pubs and bars a free second soft drink when they buy a Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Life, Coca-Cola Zero, Diet Coke, or Schweppes
Designated Driver is a nationwide campaign that rewards drivers who choose not to drink during the festive season with ‘buy one, get one free’ on soft drinks - ideal for those who end up pulling the short straw and end up being taxi for the night.
To further help drive footfall into participating locations, a new online Designated Driver Pub Finder will go live on December 1 at www.holidaysarecoming.com/designateddriver so consumers can search for a venue near them.

In the locals around here, Coke is so watered down and flat you probably couldnt tell the difference anyway. :smirk:

If you're getting charged for water, you should probably rethink your choice of pub.

In America they often give you soft drinks for free for designated drivers, so this is just a bit of PR, it costs pennies for a soft drink so they could do a lot more to promote not drinking and driving as the difference in pubs between a pint and soft drink is often negligible, so a lot of people often have "1 or 2"

I really wouldn't want to drink a lot of soft drinks just for the sake of drinking something, makes no sense to me.
I can see how this will work out well for CocaCola. If it stops idiots from drinking alcohol and driving home then it will be a good thing.

As a designated driver could i still get vodka added to it?

Indeed. In fact adding 3 or more shots of Vodka to it, as designated driver, will also get you a cooked breakfast the next morning (in time for your sobered up interview with the arresting officer)

Good Idea would be better if some non carbonated drinks could be included as well. In some pubs I have been to in the past the price of a pint soft drink (e.g coke or juice with lemonade) can be more than the price of a pint of alcoholic drink

For those who don't do carbonated drinks, grab one of the concentrated diluting juice miniatures. Fits in your pocket, and you can just order water at the bar! You can even carry a few to give you a few options!

The best idea would be if, you know, people just drink responsibly, and not drive after drinking. I mean, it can't be to hard can it? You shouldn't need to be rewarded for not putting the lives of others or yourself at risk.

Should be all year round in my honest opinion. I went to a Flaming Grill recently and for a large lemonade and lime it was £3.75! More than a pint!

Last christmas I decided i wasn't going to drink and spent a fortune. During the meal a pint of coke was £5 and after that i went on the becks blue which was more than normal becks!
"...an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, however, more research is needed to prove a causal link".
Correlation isn't causation and the article also stated that long term studies show that consuming sweeteners reduces calorific intake and thus promotes weight loss or maintenance. The study also had some limitations such as only asking participants annually to recall their consumption. There's also no biologically plausible reason for sweeteners to directly cause diabetes, particularly when some sweeteners aren't even digested.
A recent systematic review found that sweeteners do indeed reduce calorie intake and thus promote weight loss. A good write up of this is found on the Science-Based Medicine website.

I've seen one theory that the sweetness fools the brain into thinking you're eating sugar, and therefore your body reacts as if you had. Another theory is they don't satisfy sweet cravings so you eat more. Who knows if it's true, but one of those studies showed people who drink diet drinks tended to have a higher increase in bmi.

I drink water out because a medical condition means I can't have carbonated liquids. I don't pay for tap water, and I expect ice and lemon for free too. It would be nice if the offer included squash or fruit juice.
yrreb88
19 Nov 15#41
The article I linked to discusses those theories somewhat. I appreciate that there are studies that suggest otherwise, however it's worth mentioning that the BMI study you mentioned was an observational study using data that is over 30 years old. The review I linked to only looked at clinical trials and the evidence seems to consistantly show that sweeteners have positive benefits for weight management.
