Just noticed from tomorrow that CEX will be offering a 24 month warranty on everything as standard

Warranty excludes consumables; you do not need to register the items

Having worked at CeX before, the warranty is fine if you're sensible, and get's a bad rep for daft reasons. If someone buys a phone, then drops it a fortnight later and it no longer works, then you're not going to get a refund. That's not a warranty issue, but this doesn't seem to make sense to a large portion of the CeX customer base!

Also, to re-iterate the above users comment - CeX staff are treated awfully (both by upper management and customers). I worked at one for a few years, and it was (allegedly!) one of the better stores. Everyone does their best to make sure the products are working, but if you buy an item off a customer as (lets say) a 'B' grade and then the owners of said store can find a way to dock it down to a 'C' grade they take the difference directly out of your wage - this is why everyones so nervous about giving you the level you think an item deserves. On the reverse, the owners will 'up' the grade of an item once it's been bought in. Plus the customer base is about 10% people wanting to buy cool gadgets for cheap, and 90% crackheads trying to sell phones then spitting at you if you wont pay.

As a Cex employee, I have to make one thing very clear. 'We earn minimum wage and have to deal with ignorant people on a day to day basis. Cex employees always try their best to make the customer happy, if you ever find that one is disrespecting you, you can actually file a complaint through our We care page on our website.
Personally, I've only been there just over 8 months and I have; been threatened to be stabbed, beat up after work and many times, demanded to run an erran as a slave. A customer the other day noticed a cracked case, I asked him to grab another game from the shop floor whilst I get the discs. Without him actually asking "could I get it swapped?" He thought he was a tough lad and just stared at me angrily to reply "go get it for me, now!"

Yeah... You can see why sometimes we're like this, but I'm gonna defend Cex and say that 9/10 times, it's not our fault.

Anyway, 2 years warranty is a great introduction to our standards and you can always back up your receipt to your account (just in case anything goes wrong)

I used to work for these guys, in a pretty high up position. Prices are checked 8-10 hours every day across all its departments by a team in head office.

There is a reason their prices are high, they sell at that price. If they didn't, the price would go down. What kind of a lunatic business would look at their items selling healthily and think "You know what?, lets put the prices down"

Their console prices are stupidly high, £270 for a used PS4? you can get them new for £230 but yet, they still sell.

Cex are ****. Do a price check on electrical stuff, half their prices are more than a new item. When you tell them they make out they don't have a clue. Complete retards. This might only be in my local shop, but even now they have 250gb SSD's for £80. That's even more than their website offers them for.

Cex workers are treated like scum by their management. Poor morale and ridiculous in-house prices are just the tip of the problem there. It's a wonder they're still operating. Guess there are too many desperate people out there.

This is how they offer much better trade in prices for vouchers than for cash. So if you've traded something in, at the time you go for the voucher as it seems like a great deal. But then you go to spend the voucher and everything is overpriced. So it kind of averages out. If you go in and buy stuff with cash then you just need your head testing

Why, according to the world in general it's only 'druggies' that SELL to CEX so how does having a 2yr Warranty make them love it....and people actually liked this comment...lol, prime CEX customers, according to the haters....funny.

I've been looking at getting iPad 4th gen for my kids as they are so much more sturdy than the airs.
They are 5 and 7 so a 2 year warranty sounds tempting plus they don't need brand new ones.
As I can't find them anywhere else for £240????
I guess I'll have to look into the warranty standards
stevieMon to dannipie
14 Nov 15 #50
a warranty wont cover your kids dropping the ipads, then said ipads wont switch on or something else malfunctions, warranty does not cover this......
VxT to dannipie
14 Nov 15 #54
I think the age/warranty is completely irrelevant. The warranty will not cover any form of damage, so whether you're 40 or 4, if the iPad gets broken, you're out of luck. If the iPad happens to malfunction then you're fine.

Sorry if I misunderstood of course, but generally people mention kid's age as a way of saying "They'll probably break it".

Why do you think the clerks give a ****? The pricing is done internally. Cex is great for older games, you're a fool if you're waking in there for Fallout 4.

Cex and game sell at high prices because they are competing with high street stores.(Argos, pc world etc).

Game online are slightly cheaper because they are competing with Amazon. They don't go against gameseek, gamespot and the rest that we hotukdeals users buy from.

If you don't buy online, you get screwed over, unfortunately.

13 Nov 15 1 #18
They sell because people can trade their unwanted stuff in against stuff that they actually want. You can't do that in most other shops.

They are overpriced because being competitive would make it tough to make money when factoring in the above.

CEX have a clever and effective business model. But if you want reasonably priced used goods, it isn't the shop for you. That isn't what they deal in.

I was going to say the same thing about Game. They offer less than Ce but at the same time sell for more than CEX. I understand this is because they sell the same item in shop as 2nd hand and as brand new so it's a tough game for them. They say they offer more for hardware than cex. I went to sell my iPhone 5 to them as they were offering £40 more but they said no cash! So I get voucher only. Went back to cex who not only had the cash for me but also agreed to match the price quoted by Game. I ended up buying g an ipad mini off cex in the end. Happy days. I've been a cex customer since they had their 1st store in rathbone place, London buying neo go games

Have been buying and selling to Cex and in the last two years probably had vouchers up to £4,000. Yes the prices are high but the secret is to buy expensive newly released items and use the vouchers, then sell on. Bought Google glasses for £1,100, had a £680 Apple iwatch for one day

LOL some people dont understand how it works. You sell them your c**p and you are not responsible for it any more. Do you know paypal now can charge you back within 6 months time (visa even longer)? Who will buy your stuff without warranty those days? It's easier to sell for cex and not to deal with bloody morons which will coming to you back. 2y warranty is very good news

When you count how much ebay&paypal charge you it's not as bad idea to sell to cex (even if they pay nothing). They pay low? its because your item is not attractive any more xD Nobody want it/will stay on ebay for ages xD. Deal with it.

What sort of **** franchise store is this? I work for CeX (just had a staff meeting about this new 2 year warranty today), and we are encouraged to give the highest grade possible to make the customer happier and make a higher profit.

To everyone else: The exact terms and conditions for the warranty in the second year are yet to be announced - I was told we won't find out until the first year is up. In addition, no the clerks don't make up the prices, so please don't have a go at us when you find something cheaper elsewhere, it is all done internally and we can't change the prices, however we can beat trade-in prices.

Having visited many CEX stores I can say that the general staff are friendly enough however the management are usually the ones that treat every customers like they are about to rip the place off. Most of the store management are rude and have some sort of power complex thinking that they are important because you want to sell something, I am not surprised some customers get angry with the attitude of the management I have experienced and seen.

I will never visit one of these stores ever again and I sincerely hope that they all close down for good, which I expect to start seeing in the next 3 years.
Gearoid2011 to dbox

Yeah doubt that considering how many they've opened in the last year. I work in the Irish branches and they have now opened 25 stores here in under five years with over 260 employees across the Republic and doing some incredible work for the local community and cystic fibrosis. If they did close down in the morning, where do you think these people would work?

Didn't know that about docking wages etc, bad news.
I do feel sorry for the staff, though I have been a bit stitched up by them on occasions, got some nice deals on others.
I would NEVER buy an item with a sealed battery in it, as from past experience the battery is on its last legs (iphones, iPads, kindles, etc), however something with a replaceable battery is fine (got an S5 there for £280 in traded in tat six months ago, been great, and no worries about battery).
Camden CEX is good to hang round on a Saturday afternoon, always see an argument or two (poor staff).
I am starting a charity for the staff, CEX Aid, please give generously.

I find CPU prices pretty reasonable there so that's good to know. I mean currently my i7-4790K was from them. I always just buy vouchers at 80% rate then buy at Cex. E.g. the i7-4790k was going for around £200 second hand on eBay and like £240 brand new or something. It was £210 on Cex when I bought it so with vouchers at 80% rate I paid around £170 for it plus I got a 12 month warranty and next day royal mail special delivery too. Wouldn't have got that even if I paid £200 on eBay. Got my bro an i5 sandybridge for like £30 too after using vouchers.

Unless it's specifically written into the contract, no it is not legal to dock from pay for errors of judgement such as those described. Even then it is iffy. And even if that part of it was all above board, if docking pay would take you below the national minimum wage, I believe that would also be problematic - and since apparently they only pay the minimum wage, I think docking pay puts them on seriously dodgy ground.

It's possible they introduced something like that to prevent staff from going into business on their own (taking backhanders to grade higher, that sort of thing).

14 Nov 15 #36
I've been using Cex for years, always been friendly to them and they're always friendly back. They get a rap for their prices but it depends on the item: if they know an item will get a certain price due to its demand then they will sell it for that, as it would be daft if they didn't. Yes, iPhones are expensive there at launch; but the people selling get a good price for them. Down the line the prices can be good - for example at the moment you can get an A grade 128GB gold 6S or a 64GB gold 6S Plus for £640. That's less than Apple's price with a two year warranty, probably a launch week trade-in (so never been used) and you can trade your unwanted gadgets against it. They'll also let you haggle to some extent, depending on the store. They currently have the 38mm Apple Watch Sport for £190 and the Stainless Steel for £260. Big savings on the Apple price but with a longer warranty.

I think Cex get a bad rap unfairly. In all the years I've been trading things in and buying I've never had a single issue with them.

Treat people nicely and be respectful and they will usually treat you well.

Cex has 2 types of stores.
Corporate, owned and run by Cex
Franchise, owned and run by a private company.
The later are the rubbish ones to deal with.

I've spent £1,000s in there and never really had a problem. The odd time I've been a little annoyed but we all have bad days.

I just wish they graded all goods.

CEX's warranty doesn't count for much in my experience. My boyfriend bought a DSi from there and it was faulty (games would randomly freeze) and they wouldn't let him return it because the problem was intermittent and didn't show itself during the 15-minute test period. I had to video myself playing a game to catch it in the act, and I went back myself the next day. They begrudgingly gave me the refund but said I'd have to accept £10 less because the price had dropped by that much in the few days he'd had it. ****.

If not, then I would write them a strong letter demanding your earnings back, plus interest & dont be afraid to take them to the small claims court. I would even consider constructive dismissal case if it was one of the reasons behind you leaving the employment.

Where else would offer you this warranty without extra £?

Every time CeX is mentioned we go through this and apologies for the lengthy post but it's time to throw in my thoughts.

I worked for this company for five years in their busiest footfall/sq foot shop.
There are plenty of ways employees for this firm would like things changed in an ideal world; more accurate testing procedures, longer time with your products, a system where they could discount damaged boxes on every item, crystal balls that tell them if a customer isn't revealing the full truth about their 'brand new kindle'...the list could go on. But you need to be fair in assessment on companies which quite often have high footfall and very little downtime. Think about how many products are in the store database. Think about how much time the staff actually have to merchandise and maintain the upkeep of their environment. Then consider their efforts over the past decade to make customer shopping experience easier as their popularity has grown. You can sell through their website by posting your items. You can buy items within an hour or two of their buy-in status going 'live' or updating on their website.
If cash is unavailable because the tills have run dry then they will even offer to credit your bank via card! Their 48hr return for credit scheme has helped so many people swap out unwanted purchases for something else (an extra service that they extend throughout December in case of present clashing). They have offered what fair warranty they can for a year (not just three months like most other second hand stores). Staff often find themselves needing to learn on the fly about this weeks new product features and they have to try and keep up with an incredible amount of knowledge regarding all product sectors. Ask yourself if you could be so helpful about so many topics every day.
It is fair of the store to expect to witness a fault covered by warranty before offering a refund. It is fair that they can't check each disc. It is fair to expect customers to queue if they are busy. CeX store staff work harder than any retail environment I can imagine (yes even supermarkets-they don't buy in your junk!), and they, like every other company have KPI's and sale targets to meet too. Can you really blame these mostly young, often exploited people for doing their best? Now, as for upper management - as with most companies they have their agenda, be it world domination, next speedboat or whatever. But it can't be denied that whilst the company is still growing, it has also been infused with funds. Bonus schemes are in place and they do allow their staff to keep their personality. New cleaner stores both Corporate and Franchise have popped up - they're clean and more spacious! New ideas have been thrown on the table such as this (albeit now neglected topic) 24 month warranty. And I'm going to have to repeat myself here, their servers have to grow exponentially as technology increases in output... so that's a cost. Compare these efforts to your alternatives people. If your buddy or neighbor offers you a better deal on such a range of products then I urge you to pass out his phone number, website or store location.

In reply to the comments left about wages docked for mis-grading... this did not happen in my store or any I have worked at in the past and if you still work there I would urge you to access your line manager and report all events and details as best you can to mend such malpractice.

Be glad somewhere still sells some rare stuff. Be thankful someone at each store tries their best to answer your silly uneducated questions. Be nicer to your retail workers in general... or y'know, work there yourself, set the example and show us how you could do better under the same conditions. Whether CeX lasts as a firm over time isn't your problem.

CeX are what they are - a place to sell your unwanted stuff quickly and hassle free and where you can pick up cheap 2nd hand stuff. Yes, a lot of things are way too expensive like computer hardware and I would always prefer to buy new unless it is dirt dirt cheap. Things that tend to drop in price like SSDs are always going to be poor buys in a retail shop as they can't compete with the internet. Games/DVDs are usually the best value, especially when you use vouchers.

To those who criticise the staff and/or the shops - this is retail in the 21st century - the staff are on min wage and I feel sorry for them and you will always come across **** but I'm sure most are sound. My advice to every kid is these places are somewhere that you should work in as a stopgap whilst training for something better, this is not a career option.

CEX are a rubbish company. Sent me missing items in my order and when I asked for a replacement, they said, fine, we will offer you a replacement but at the current price of the item, which has gone up.

This is not how a company should operate. A replacement should be done at the price I paid. Not at the current price.

They open branches mainly due to getting new people willing to put money up for to buy a franchise, CEX itself will be around for a long time as they cover themselves well but I can see a lot of their franchisees struggling.

People will buy digital versions of films and stream their favourite TV shows on demand this was part of CEX's core business, gaming is on its way to becoming downloadable/streaming and once this happens another part of CEX business will disappear. The pc parts business is in decline in favour of tablets and laptops pre built for the majority of consumers. The other main area is the phone/tablet business which is now becoming saturated as the technology becomes faster enough for the majority of people's needs, once people find a tablet/phone they are really happy with they will keep it longer.

I can't see it being a bright future for them and only a place where you will go if your desperate, people want a reliable company and somewhere where a warranty or guarantee actually means something not just a publicity stunt.

I bought a blackberry passport from your shop in Newcastle last year June, now the black berry phone is failing to receive network. I took it back to your shop in Newcastle, where I bought the phone. The guy there did a factory reset and attempted to type in my pass word, till the last go, while I was standing there, I still don't understand why he did this. I waited for 3 hours, only for the people in the shop to tell me my warranty is void because my phone has been in contact with water, I said my phone has never been in water, he said there is a paper mark that has turn red, this is evidence my phone has been in water, it probably has happened when I was in the rain, I said I have a car, I don't walk in the rain. he said it must be contact with moisture in the atmosphere, really! I am very upset. I said there is no point putting up a 24 month warranty poster in the shop if you are going to be making up excuses not to meet up the warranty. my phone has never been in water and I am sure water from the atmosphere do not broke a phone.
