Great price, if you need one for GCSE, A level, any other maths in education really, just get one. No need to bother with anything else.

Pretty cool, a big dot matrix display to show fractions and roots for 3 squids! Is it backlit too?
I remember having to pay £20 for the most basic scientific Casio ever - this would have been incredible!

Voted hot but...
if you're buying for A-Level maths, the FX-991ES can be found for about £15-£20, and is capable of checking answers - in some sense.
e.g. you have a question that's
a) find the differential of blahblahblah
and you give your answer as a load of Xs - no allowed calculator can do this for you
b) find the gradient when ...
and you have to find a specific number, using your answer to part a
The FX-991ES (and others I guess) can do part b generally using just what was given in the question to begin with. I cannot emphasise how useful this is. If your answer to b is the same as what the calculator says, you can assume you got the whole question right. Likewise, if you get a different answer, you can spend the extra time at the end of the paper going back over that question.

This is the one we were recommended for GCSEs by my son's school. Bargain.

What constitutes useful mathematics? (stupid question, pls ignore)
Please provide significant detail whereby A Level Maths is useless (this is a generalised term, so you'll need to supply evidence that it's completely worthless in all aspects) and your suggested forms of Mathematics are useful.

it does, for radians and numerical integration

Well I certainly got A-Level maths without one, but that's probably because the calculator hadn't been invented back then!

On MEI, Core 1 is a non-calculator module but you may use a calculator for any other module (so the other 5 for A Level maths or the other 11 if you are doing further maths as well).

All stores I would have thought. My local had a label for the FX-85 (£10) but the FX-83 scans through at £3.

Thanks for this. My eldest is insistent that the calculator I bought from the school shop is no good and his teachers have said he needs a casio. Mother in law has just text to see if I need anything from Morrisons so have sent her on a little mission. Cheers
