Bought one last week for £12 and must honestly say its been the worse joint ever, full of fat and stringy, not nice at all. Had to slow curry it in the end as it was too tough to enjoy so definitely cheap quality.

I couldn't agree more! I have bought a piece this morning and cut it into 3. I am strapped for cash at the moment so thought I could stock up! However, I have cooked one piece this morning and it is as tough as old boots and almost impossible to cut. I am very disappointed because it cost me £8.30. I know it doesn't sound much but it's a lot for me!! Grrr..... I should have bought a chicken!

What slicer do you have? Is it any good? Looking to get one myself but not a lot of choice out there. The cost of deli meat is exorbitant.

I bought several last time they were on offer and they are pretty good. Great tip about mincing them!
Thanks

Great price, also don't write it off as an alternative to a steak - cut a 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick slice, put it between cling film and give it a good battering with a rolling pin until 1/4 inch thick (or doubled in size) quickly fry in a very hot frying pan, let it sit for a couple of mins and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Remember. if mincing the beef, first, cut the beef into strips that will fit into the throat of the mincer, then place the meat into the freezer to 'firm up' before mincing. Produces a better mince rather than the meat turning to mush.

depends on the mincer, some wont push the meat through if it firms up and if its a household mixer attachment you could burn the motor or shorten its life, mush normally is because you haven't got the mincer tight enough.

Thanks, going to get a couple and do them in the slow cooker!

Topside/Silverside (Which I'd imagine this is) can dry out in the slow cooker if you do it too long. 3-4 hours at medium is probably the limit, unless you get a bit with a thicker fatcap.
Good tip!

Just sorted out my freezer and counted 125 portions of various home made dinners. Only 3 adults to feed at the moment, until the twins are back from Uni for Christmas. Thank goodness for chest freezers.

these are normally good quality, if you buy the frying steak, braising steak you can cut steaks off this with no issues, of course if you like the likes of Rump or Sirloin its not a comparison. if you have a mincer this also makes very lean steak mince at a much cheaper price than buying the mince itself.

I have a mincer that has never been used. Might buy a few to mince up on the weekend. Thanks for the idea.
