Better to have olive oil on bread! Or 100% peanuts peanut butter! Wholemeal bread is better than White!

When you fry fish you destroy the omega 3. Better to steam it.

I can't see how shallow frying a fish for 3 minutes on each side would have any significantly different effect on the omega 3 content compared to any other cooking method.

The butter was on the bread not on the fish! Did you mean they probably made a herring sandwich ?

I did actually look into it after your comment. It seems most of the studies that show a loss of Omega 3 are actually looking at deep fried fish. Which makes sense as obviously with deep frying the omega3 will leach out of the fish - and the fish will take up the less healthy frying oil. But who really deep fries oily fish - other than maybe white bait?
I think, disregarding the calories in the oils used and the saturates in the butter, a meal of shallow fried herring and bread and butter is not that unhealthy a meal. As a small part of a balanced diet it's actually pretty nutritious. It's really lovely as well

We were both right in some areas and have taught each other something! Shame we can't use this method to keep world peace!
