I am one of those "I never want to fly Ryanair again" people who always end up flying with them again as they are, to some credit, generally the cheapest and I have always found them prompt!

If everyone does what I am posting below already or this has been posted before then my apologies but here goes - see if it works (may even work with other airlines):

1. Even if you are booking for more than one person, check out the cost of a one person flight cost and then two, then three, etc. On-line sites generally work on a demand basis so you might find that by booking (say) four people on immediately you will go to the next pricing level whereas by booking one or two at the lower price then the others at the next price band, etc.

2. You would normally book an outward flight with a return but if you book Ryanair bags in, say, Euros (ie book outward and return separately) you should pay the same as the pound charge (I tried Manchester to Faro and that gave me £35 baggage out but €35 back which is a bit a saving if you don't mind the faffing about)!

3. When you have booked seats on Ryanair don't go for the Priority Q option to purchase as this should be included in the seat booking.

4. If you want to go to a destination that is busy because, say, your team are playing a match there. Why not fly via another country (again its a faff but we have saved £200 each going via Amsterdam for England vs Italy rugby). I remember flying to Madrid via Majorca for a European game - saved a packet.

Please try these first before screaming at me in a return post or comment!

Expecting this to be chilly but heyho - its a saving for some hopefully!

Such an awful airline - You have to make your own way to the airport, they don't send a Chauffeur. Then you have to carry your bags to the terminal, no Valet is provided.

How uncivilized.

we recently flew to Spain.
I had one small suitcase, the lightest possible for an adult.
My children both had large suitcases, much heavier. However, a child's luggage is half the price of an adult's, so it was a big saving. You have to have at least one adult paying full price for a suitcase but it doesn't have to be particularly big.

You just need to be sure when checking in the luggage to use the right boarding pass with the right suitcase!

Also if booking return leg in Euros, click more in conversion box to deselect Ryanair doing the conversion. if you have a good card with low conversion fees you can save more. €14.99 with Ryanair conversion is roughly £11.80 but only £10.14 with my Travelex Supercard.

my first flight was a decent 8am and I live two miles away, the last landed jut before six (hour difference 5 in Uk) and had a leisurely stroll about the two airports with no stress as had time to spare.....that alone was worth the bother.....total each was 60 euros, these flights a re only about half to one hour each and are dirt cheap x

Hopefully someone will benefit:
approx 1 month ago i was flying from brussels charleroi to manchester.
I only ever carry hand-cabin luggage on my ryanair booking (learnt to travel light)!
My luggage weighed 8kg...
when my luggage went through checks, I was told I was able to check this bag in for FREE, by franch speaking belgian, who then escorted me back to checkin desks and queue jumped, waited and then took me back through.
I asked the lady at the check-in desk who was English...she explained this was something new -that any CABINLUGGAGE up to the weight of 20kg was now FREE to check in.....
and then i was thinking about all the liquids i could have packed on my earlier journey!

...she said this was something new and may also be temporary but is currently in place...worth enquiring about!

I was also thinking i could have checked in a bag and taken hand luggage and hand bag....but of course i dont need to generally speaking.

 let me know your thoughts/finds!

Ryanair are what they are a cheep way to fly round Europe I fly Bournemouth to Malaga return several times a yr with a case because of sun creams and liquids and nice cloths for about £130 return who cares what seat I sit on don't give a dam about speedy boarding don't buy their food or drinks can last 4 hours with a bottle water. Just read the T and C your not getting on with a 30kg case as hand luggage so don't try but you will provide free entertainment to the rest of us if you do. They run on time they get you their cheep and safe. They do take the **** with their debit card fees but then I'm not paying £180 for the sam flight with another airline. Anyway the train trip in the UK to the airport cost more.

I'd like to point out that when I applied for an Halifax Clarity card I was quoted 21% apr which was 6% higher than my Halifax Platinum, as I pay off my card each month this would not affect me but anyone who does not pay off their card would be paying for the privilege of better exchange with higher repayments. These charges are unique to me and my credit score and each person would be charged according to their credit score, so please be alert, nothings ever free.

I use Ryanair all the time and love them - they fly (yes, FLY) you where you want for train ticket prices and allow you to pay for a 'premium' service though most people prefer to save £5 and then moan about it when others walk past them in the queue and get front row seats.
I don't fly business class so I'm happy to pay a small premium with ANY airline to ensure priority boarding, front row seats and my luggage guaranteed above my head; no airline GUARANTEE all that for free in an ECONOMY seat and BA treat economy passengers with no more respect. The Ryanair flights are always punctual and only cost circa £25 each way if booked in advance so don't moan if you decide NOT to pay a few quid extra... You get what you pay for but, that said, Ryanair ensure you can still pay for a very good service at very cheap prices.
I thoroughly enjoy my "Pret" lunch from the best onboard seats whilst watching a film on my iPad with everything organised and paid for in advance. I know what I'm getting, don't get any nasty surprises or jostling and don't pay a penny more than expected either at the airport or onboard.
If you hate them don't use them and keep prices down for those of us who respect the good value service being offered.

Ryanair are one of the cheapest flight companies you will find. If you play by their rules they're fine. The only issues are that there is no checked in baggage unless you're willing to pay extra, and it can be hard fitting everything into your hand luggage while keeping within their size and weight requirements. They're very hit and miss with how strictly they enforce such baggage restrictions, and if you're caught on the wrong side of them it's a £50 charge per bag. Similarly with online check in, you will be charged if you try to check in at the airport, you need to check in and printing your boarding pass before the flights, some hours before. If you're not careful that £30 flight can quickly climb. They also fly to outside of where you generally want, meaning you need to take some sort of transport from the Airport to the city you're actually interested in, which means transport costs you wouldn't have with a non-budget line.

All in all, Ryanair are fine and a good way to travel, just make sure to play by their rules and you take account of other things like transport.
pantaiema
9 Sep 15 #86
That is exactly my logic.
But I could also understand that a few people might prefer to get priority boarding as they will have more chance to get their luggage in the overhead locker.

You will often find your cabin suitcase will be put on free hold luggage which for some people will be inconvenience as they will need to wait their for luggage coming out from the conveyor belt on the other end

I imagine the only problem with this method is you all may be split up on the plane instead of sitting together. Unless you then paid for allocated seating but then you would lose any savings made.

The only problem is when you need to cancel your parking. By booking direct with Jetparks - no hassle but if you need to cancel parking booked with Ryanair, you lose the money. Happened to me last time, both ryanair and jetparks washed their hands.

Oddly I have found the same when flying out of Edinburgh. Twice now when booking a last minute flight I've found booking the on-site long stay parking is cheaper via Ryanair compared to anyone else.

I would actually class myself as one of those people who avoided Ryanair like the plague. But since they introduced allocated so it’s no longer a scrum I don’t actually mind flying them for short haul flights. Now I’m flying 15-20 times a year with them. I normally have my head in a book on a flight so to be honest it doesn’t really matter to me who I’m flying with, as long as I get there on time and at a good price then I’m happy.

Follow the basic rules (I mean, how hard is it really to make sure your luggage is a certain size/weight and you have your boarding pass in advance?) and you will be fine.

The baggage trick is working and I have tried it several times.
Last time was going to Rabat morocco, flight was £35 + £20 luggage, this is a one way ticket as I booked the return desperately and it was £32 + £9 for luggage and this is due to the currency exchange as well as the prices were different anyway if I was to buy both tickets in one go.
Some fellows up saying it's an old trick and doing it for ten years... Good for you but not everyone is aware of it and no harm in sharing good practices and that's the beauty of HUKD

Issue is that RA has to be at last 25% cheaper than any other airline to make it worth considering.....if they can do this then I would, but still not when with flying with kids as delays get much more problematic. Still they are doing well and don't seem to be short of bookings...

Booked a Ryanair return flight from Stansted a couple of days ago.
Would never normally consider their own car parks / insurance / car hire add-on's.
Obtained quotes from various airport park websites first, cheapest I could find was Jet Parks £39.99 for 7 days. Included Jet Parks within my Ryanair booking at £34.79.
That's a fiver I didn't expect to save!
Reference number for car parks is same as flight booking so I'm guessing they may have their own allocated chunk of car park within Jet Parks?

Mind you there are a lot of people have been saying this, yet they still fly Ryan Air once they know that the alternative flight could be ten times more....

You will only believe the people who are saying "never again to fly Ryan Air" will not break their promise if this wordings are spell out by the people who could effort to lead a millionaire lifestyles. Well, people who could lead a millionaire lifestyle are not a lot on this planet earth and definitely will not bother to visit HUKD in the first instance..

Like Michael O’ Larry used to say to p**s off people in the past “if you hate Ryan Air do not fly Ryan Air”. Other people have said "you pay nothing you get nothing"

I think he is right as there are a lot of the bargain hunters out there with reasonable expectation will keep flying Ryan Air who will be more than happy to take your seats. There are a lot of bargain hunters out there who play by the rule with reasonable expectation, they
- Do not expect to get refunded or to be scheduled if they miss the flight due to their own fault
- Do not expect to be seated together or allocated a seat if they have not paid for it. You have family, OHs, children, etc. and want to be seated together pay for it, otherwise prepare to seat separately. It is only a few hours anyway.
- Do not mind to be asked to pay check in luggage if they break Ryan Air baggage rule for cabin baggage.
- Do not expect to get meal or refreshment onboard as they know they have not paid for it ...
- Do have the hard copy of their boarding pass, not on electronic form on tabs pr phone.
- etc

It is all on the t&c which you have agreed before purchasing ...

Play by the rule, lower your expectation, you will love it, I do ....
The rule is there to ensure RA could keep the price low and to make more people fly on budget...
pantaiema
9 Sep 15 #68
For small amount, you will realise that quie often (if not always) Ryan Air is using conversion £/EUR = 1:1. So the flight in £9.99 or £19.99, etc for intances if you book it in Euros, it will be EUR9.99 or EUR19.99 respectively . So you are always be better off if could book a cheap flight in Euros and not in £.

I always do that on my return flight, from somewhere in Europezone to UK. by booking two seperate flights.
But I have yet to find how to book flight originated from UK to somewhere else in Europezone in Euros ??

Anyone know how to book Ryanair flights originated from the UK in Euros ??

8 Sep 15 2 #60
all spot on. Have used them all before!!!!!! saved a fortune on booking a stag do. booked 6 at cheaper price then 7 at slightly dearer. trying to book 13 was all at slightly dearer. Another ploy that I can recommend is to leave checking in till the day you fly out. seat allocation is fill middle of plane. so if you book day check in opens you end up in the middle. if you are last to check in you get unsold priority seats. had extra leg room half the time and priority seats 1-5 (i think) the other half. was only split from partner once. I do check in on day of flight but.

I just checked their terms and conditions and this is what it says just for clarification as i normally only book row 2 so wasn't sure about other seats but here goes
Front Row Seat from £/€ 15.00 - Rows 1 A,B,C and 2 D,E,F. Rapid exit seats include priority boarding.
Premium Seats from £/€10.99 - Rows 2-7 and rows 16 & 17 (extra leg room). Premium seats include priority boarding. Passengers who have purchased Priority Boarding will
not be asked to place their cabin bag in the aircraft hold, unless necessary due
to operational reasons.
Regular Seats from £/€5.99 – All other seats (rows 8-15 and rows 18-33). Regular Seats may be upgraded to include Priority Boarding from £/€2.99 per person/per flight.

I am going to pop another post within a post - not sure who might read this...

For car hire I generally use Luz Cars in Faro - a bit more pricey but a good service. One small tip for Faro and other locations is that many of the websites use "Cartrawler" - when you book your car whilst the logos of the booking form belong to the airlines you are, on occasions, diverted to an embedded third party - Cartrawler.

Cartrawler own Argus car rental - just google to find it - you never know, you might be missing out the middle man / woman!

Bring on the car hire tips (not sure how to do a thread but someone might...)!

I've flown with my 4 children (aged 8-18) with Ryanair for the past 3 years (England to Spain and back) and have never had a problem with them. The staff that I've had to deal with - on the ground and in the air, have always been polite and most helpful. This year (returned from a holiday last week), my oldest son was really car sick flying to the airport, and ended up walking up the steps of the plane with a plastic sick bag over his face! The captain greeted us at the top of the steps and was most polite. He told my son that it was important to drink plenty of water, gave him a handful of sick bags and said that if any more could be done to make his trip more comfortable, to let a member of staff on board know.

Disregarding this, I don't understand why people grumble about Ryanair - the fares are relatively decent (if you book at the right time) and we've never experienced any delays, late arrivals, or lost luggage with them. One good thing is the fact that they now allocate you a seat (if you don't want to pay to select your own). A couple of years ago, I remember it tipping with rain when we had to board the plane. I know that some people don't like getting wet, but there were quite a lot of grown adults charging for the plane with their suitcases and bashing into young children and not even stopping to apologise! At least with allocated seating, it stops that huge rush for the plane seats. One thing that I would say though, is that if you are a family with young children, it is really worthwhile to pay out to select your own seat. If it adds on too much money for the whole family, perhaps make sure that there is at least one adult/parent sat next to a young child - this year I did see quite a few families grumbling on the plane because they were not given allocated seating together.

Thanks OP - this will be useful for me in a few weeks

Don't forget the good old halifax clarity card - offers (usually) unbeatable euro exchange rate. Last time I used it (July) I got €1.41 whereas the best currency rate was €1.38 so big savings to be had. Just be mindful that as its a credit card you'll incur additional charges for the flights - worth it IMO if over £100 though for the extra protection you get.

You should also be aware that if you book multiple flights, then if your first flight is delayed and you miss the later ones, then you're screwed, even though they are still Ryanair flights. Their punctuality is not bad, but you have to be aware of it when you split flights.

we recently flew to Spain.

Most disgraceful airline to have EVER existed.

Would only fly with them if I had absolutely no other option.

Disgusting company with no customer service or morals at all.

When did you last fly with Ryanair?
adamsxi to wazzygib

Disgusting but you would still fly with them. Compelling argument!

Also if booking return leg in Euros, click more in conversion box to deselect Ryanair doing the conversion. if you have a good card with low conversion fees you can save more. €14.99 with Ryanair conversion is roughly £11.80 but only £10.14 with my Travelex Supercard.
mattoo to philman2013

Yes they will revert to GBP when you put your billing country as UK but as you say, there is a small paragraph of text that says they will dynamically convert the EUR price or other currency to GBP for you (at a rubbish rate). Simply deselect this option and it will then charge you in EUR or the currency of the departure airport. It will save quite a bit. Use a card with no foreign transaction fees to maximise the benefit.

Note that the OP refers to baggage only not the return flight cost.

thats not the catch, problem is the whole journey takes eight days

If you play by their rules, they are as good as any other airline, and much cheaper. Shame I live miles from Stansted.

Haven't you paid more then, 3x £60 = £180, direct was £140?

own seat for a charge yeah?

Do Ryanair have allocated seats or is it still a rush and fight job?
seanjames to EN1GMA

you can pick your own seat (charge) or you get a seat picked for you

Yes, that happened to me too on a booking from Dublin handful - they used to give you the option of paying in £s or Euros at one time but that seems to have disappeared now - that is one of the "marmite" things about Ryanair but, as I say, all in all they have been good to me despite a well bitten tounge!

I may have done this wrong previously but I recently booked a return flight from Brussels to Lanzarote and when I chose to pay with a UK debit/credit card it converted the transaction from Euros to GBPs, at a pretty dire exchange rate. Couldn't be bothered to investigate why but assumed that was how it had to be?

should this not be in Misc? Thanks for the tips OP. Many people may know about this but im sure lots don't. besides, reminders like these are always welcome.

aren't you just repeating what grinnaslee said or did you just use the quote function to make it clear what you were responding to?

Aren't you just repeating the same thing or did the OP get edited?

This probably won't help many people and it's not a massive saving but if you are flying from Bristol airport and need to use a trolley they will charge you £2 for the privilege, but if you have euros then you can pay €2 instead of £2.

Did this flying back from Faro this summer, realised it was cheaper for the flight and baggage as it is in Euro's. Def worth checking the single flights.
grinnaslee
8 Sep 15 4 #3
2.
Also try booking return flights separately e.g. the leg there separate to the journey back, this will be priced in Euros and can be cheaper.

Ha ha, been doing all this for over ten years ......tomorrow I will take three flights to get to Granada, a cost of about £60 each, direct is £140 each.......I still use Ryanair and also admire how prompt they are, unfortunately they don't fly from my local airport...........also check British Airways as I am flying back for £18 each which includes two items of hand luggage and free food and bar- enjoy.
