These are nicely built laptops (business class).

There is an option for a very nice backlit keyboard. They can be picked up fairly cheaply, if the one supplied does not come with it (there is a little 'light' icon on the right cursor key if its a backlit keyboard). Depending on your Bios settings FN+Right Arrow switches the backlight on (otherwise the light sensor switches it on automatically)

Your better off buying your own 4gb RAM from eBay for a little bit less and then selling the RAM you got out off the laptop.

Bought 2 of these from this seller and they've worked great.
Chuck_Norris
2 Oct 15 #15
For under £90, even if you had to buy a new battery it'd still be worth it.

The 'tested/10 minute' thing is standard spiel to cover themselves (they are refurbs after all, and they sell 100's). If you got one with a dodgy battery then you'd be a very unlucky minority.
kristoff
3 Oct 15 #16
Had one of these since 2010 with the 9 cell battery, backlight etc. I'm sure it was over 800 notes. Cracking machine but quite a heavy lump to carry around. Put an SSD in it a few months ago and Windows 10 and it's running as sweet as a nut.

Is it worth risking it and buying this for uni or should I get a brand new laptop instead?
Chuck_Norris to talhamusa
3 Oct 15 1 #24
Depends on your budget, but the machine does come with 12 months warranty. As far as performance is concerned you won't be disappointed. Do upgrade to at least 4gb though.

3 Oct 15 #34
If you plan to take it out to uni to take notes during lecture, do not buy it for two reasons
1. too heavy to carry around.
2. peers influence.

Use it at home.

It's coming up as £79.99 for me - 10% off for paying with PayPal and using a voucher code which apparently expires end of today. Never seen Ebay using voucher codes like this before (apparently it's for anything over £75). Just also realised it seems to only show for items in my watched list - don't get the option of 10% discount for anything I'm not watching.

Anyway, this is also a very good deal for anyone that has slightly more to spend (£121 or £109 if you get the 10% discount) - Newer model by 1 year, i5 processor, 4gb of ram

This one you linked looks good. I assume they have HDMI port even though it's not listed?

Also I'd want it for mainly doing a spot of browsing and some downloading. Would the 4GB of ram be enough or would I need the 8Gb? I was thinking of upgrading the memory to 1tb.

Also are these usually badly graded? Wouldn't mind the odd scratch...

I have one - nice business laptop. If style is your thing then this might not be for you - my kid's don't like it at all as its very functional and not like their laptops. But its rock solid and does exactly what I need it to do so I am happy with it. It does look a bit old fashioned and business like though.

It seems to be a code specific to me. I found the t&c's for it in which it says offer is open to "targeted Ebay users" - will paste full t&c below. If you want to check if you have it it appears on the item page next to the bit about nectar points - it's a small 'blink and you'll miss it type link'

Not sure about HDMI but if you google the model name for specs you should be able to find out.
4gb ram is plenty for general internet and a bit of downloading, personally I wouldnt bother upgrading this but if I was going to I'd buy the ram myself (which should cost around £30) as that way you will have the existing 2 x 2gb sticks to re-sell.
Personally I would upgrade to an SSD if I was going to make one single change to any 2nd hand laptop - this will do much more for the performance of your laptop than going beyond 4gb of ram.
Re grading - both these models are listed as grade 2 so should just have light signs of wear and tear, nothing major
ted209
3 Oct 15 #32
My thoughts exactly, but I've decided to go for a new 120gb SSD instead of the seller's used offering. Anyone got any advice or recommendations?

I've never had a computer with an SSD before! Upgrading from a 2007 laptop with a 1.7GHz Pentium M (actually usable running Debian linux) so hoping to see a huge performance difference.

hp, dell business laptops normally have DP (full sized, not mini), not HDMI.

You can buy DP to HDMI cable on ebay for less than £4.

or DP to DVI on amazon.

They work. I bought 30 DP to HDMI for my office two weeks ago.

Absolute rubbish. For the price this is a very good laptop, it's a bit heavier than a more expensive modern laptop but who cares. As for buying a functional device for university, who cares what other people think. Most would just think it is a laptop, it's work not a fashion show.

you can buy brand new Acer i3 from Tesco Direct for £250, 15.6 inch with windows 10 pre-installed.

But bear in mind, the £250 is a budget consumer laptop, whereas this one is a business model which is heavier and more durable.

I'm actually thinking of returning my £250 Acer i3 which I got a week ago from Tesco and buying one of the £121 E6410s that someone else added a link to in this thread. They also offer an upgrade to a 240gb SSD from the installed 160gb HDD so thinking about doing this.
I've never bought a refurbished before, but for £200 all in this seems like a good idea for a backup laptop to me.

It's heavier than most current laptops given the good build quality (compared to the light plastic models sold nowadays) but to say it's 'heavy' is not quite true. I walk an hour a day with it in a backpack with no issues (and I'm not the biggest of people).

I agree the E6400 is a great machine but every so often you can find the E6410 (1st gen Core i5) or E6420 (2nd gen/Sandy Bridge) for a little more money (£20-30) and they are arguably worth the extra over the Core 2 because they are substantially quicker. Build quality is similar or marginally better.

Overall though, when you consider these would have been £800+ when new, it almost is a steal given the quality of casing and chassis.

Its not a gaming graphics card, it will be a quadro nvs 160m (you can use it for games, but its quite weak)
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/301598-33-dell-e6400-nvidia-quadro-160m-horrible

This is not the default graphics card that comes with most Dell E6400, but an optional extra (usual graphics is Intel GMA 4500M HD onboard).
Assuming its the Intel onboard chipset in the models sold here - Minecraft performance:

Got mine today - it's well used, but I'm happy overall:
- battery life is 30 mins max, so I'll replace it
- 2.4GHz processor instead of 2.26GHz
- came with 4GB RAM instead of 2GB
- came with 250GB hard drive instead of 160GB (planning to replace with a 120GB SSD anyway)
- has a DVD-RW drive instead of DVD-ROM drive
Despite all the free upgrades, still sort of kicking myself for not going with the slightly more expensive i5!
joolt to ted209
8 Oct 15 #56
They have a 14 day return policy - you could still return it and get the i5
Interesting that you got double the ram advertised - same happened to me - bought one of the i5's which was supposed to have 4gb of ram and it came with 8, not complaining anyway!
ted209
8 Oct 15 #57
Thanks for pointing that out. I'm not going to do much CPU intensive work on the laptop, I'm more interested in efficiency and battery life. I think i've managed to convince myself that there probably isn't much difference at low CPU loads, so will stick with it I think.

Can't for the life of me get it to pair with my ultra 6 and the only way I've found to turn the blue tooth off is through the bios but these are small quibbles, big thanks to the op for this one, though your unlikely to see it lol.
