Show me another box for £10 that'll do iPlayer, ITV Player, All4 and Demand 5 in HD via HDMI or Scart/Phono plugs and is plug and play and still getting updates. Cheapest and easiest way to turn any old telly into a SmartTV. Unlike my Roku 1 these have been rock solid stable and reliable. Forget the NowTV service, it's the hardware that makes these still a deal.

can these boxes run off a mobile PAYG WiFi. I have a 4g WiFi/mobile broadband, but nothing like sky or BT, but am interested in the Now TV box for the skysports option. I imagine it would drain the data dry though?...anyone else tried this??
gavin1 to DazLFC
13 Oct 15#25
Yes, it just needs WiFi and would not be able to tell if its from a home router, and broadband line, or a Mi-Fi.
However if you will use a lot of data, TV tends to come in around 500MB to 1GB an hour, but due to compression its hard to be very accurate. If you are watching a fairly static image say Cricket where there's not a lot of movement overall in the image, it can be on the low side, or higher if it a fast action series or movie with lots of changes in the images it can be higher. More changed in the image more data that needs to be sent in the signal.
These only do 720 so there's no HD that could take even more data.
They recommend 2MB or higher line speeds, so that's also a consideration, can your 4G keep that rate up, it should but if there's a lot of people using it around you it may not be able to and be in fits and starts at some popular times.

these are the older 720p now tv boxes there sky is giving them away, the new ones are in black 1080p and there sky are also getting rid of the 1080i 2tb boxes so they can get the new 4k boxes out there, marketing at its finest and people think there getting a deal lol

12 Oct 151#10
No, there is a well documented (in their forums) problem with audio stuttering (regardless of net speed) that NowTv just can't seem to fix. I like NowTv, and it's a bargain at this price, but the stuttering can get VERY annoying especially when it obliterates entire words as it sometimes does.

You obviously hardly use it then or just don't notice the issues. Try watch game of Thrones and listen for skipping audio. Listening on a TV can drown out the issues especially if the speakers are poor. Put some headphones on and when the music is on in the intro you will clearly hear it. Also Running with bear grylls has bad stuttering picture.

thanks op. ordered another entertainment pass. never had a problem with these and I run two at the same time accessing now TV (now 4 in the house all with Plex). I did check out the forums before getting this deal a few months back and the general opinion was putting it down to certain routers/Wi-Fi. I used to have an old sky router that had problems with connection but bought a second hand hub (sr101) and it works no problem with it as I heard the newer black one is a bit suspect in certain situations like solid concrete structure houses. my other one is connected through a power line wireless extender and works flawless. I am on 40mb sky fibre, maybe if someone is having problems they should go with the wired new box for £15 more.

It's actually a genuine complaint. I've been with NOW TV for a while and have contacted their customer service several times about faults in their audio (not picture on my part, but it might just be the programmes I watch). I've frequently been told that they are 'already aware' of the issues that I've flagged, and 'working on resolving the issue', or things that effect. Other times they've thanked me for letting them know about the issues.
It's not a perfect service. But it's also the only way to legally watch several shows from America here in the UK, at least without waiting for them to come out on DVD. So I'll put up with it for now, and keep hoping they improve their service. Overall, I'm a happy customer, and would recommend them. But there is room for improvement, and this is definitely something to consider if you're thinking about joining them.
bobbi
13 Oct 15#47
agreed I have never had an issue with picture stutter, in fact I think these are excellent value for money once you start stacking the vouchers onto 1 account, which allows up to 3 or 4 boxes to have access.
I do have the newer black ones now, which I bought to use the usb port to watch movies from, but sadly just before they released the box they pulled this function. for now, hopefully a firmware update will give this option.
STEVENCOLBERT77

Good Deal.
The 2 SkySports day pass's are worth the £10 alone.
However if your Internet speed is less than 20mb then you will suffer buffering issues due to the Wifi connection.

13 Oct 15#49
We use NowTV (via PS4) as our main source of watching TV programmes. It works a treat, is considerably less than our previous Sky TV subscription, and we don't suffer with audio, video or buffering issues. That's using BT Infinity with up to 36MB download speeds.
I'm considering purchasing the new box when it comes down in price, just so that we don't have to keep using the PS4 for watching TV. Maybe I'm being overly cautious about using the console too much.

Nothing wrong with my Internet everything else works fine. It's now tv and its a very common issue. If you are watching through tv you probably won't notice due to.the tv speakers drowning out the stuttering. Try putting some headphones on and listen to the start of game of Thrones. Or try watch running with bear grylls and look at the picture skipping. I use PS3 and PS4 app so it might not be as bad on box but looking at the forums its always full of people complaining. PS4 app was unusable for 3 weeks last month due to new update having stuttering picture.
