Seems a good deal considering the specs and screen size, most around this price seem to only have sub 12" screens. My son needs a replacement for his ageing Dell Latitude, so looking for a good laptop buy just for student work (not games, social etc), even refurb as the cheaper the better at the moment, and HUKD PC guru's got some suggestions?

It will run it but it will be painfully slow. For your budget you would better off looking for a refurbished laptop with i5 processor and 8gb of ram

Will she be doing the photo editing at home? If so don't get a laptop, you'll be paying double the cost for half the performance.

ebuyer sell refurbs as new, with a little poking around you will find something. When I tried to register the warranty of a laptop i purchased off ebuyer it had already been registered the year before.

I wonder what the power consumption difference is between this and the thinkpad x220 with an i5 that was posted here for 88 quid on equivalent settings. I think I know which one I'd rather have lol, it's arriving today

I bought a Lenovo B50-70 from Ebuyer this time last year. After 9 months it developed a screen fault, a line of dead pixels down the screen. I returned it to the manufacturer, who couldn't repair it, so they gave me a return code to give to Ebuyer so I could get a refund or replacement. As I had the laptop for over 6 months Ebuyer would only agree to a partial refund as I'd had use of the laptop. Suffice to say I will never buy a large purchase from Ebuyer again.

we've got one of these at home - absolutely fine for normal office use - gets quite heavily used as a work PC by one of us and has travelled around europe.
I've got a much more powerful Lenovo i5 (£900) portable machine and to be honest the cheaper machine does the job as well.

Check Asda. They were selling an identical spec Medion Akoya E6239 (also made by Lenovo) for £80 a few weeks back. They won't be on display. If your lucky, they'll be in a corner in the store so ask at the tech desk to go and have a look.

reduced as they need to shift it fast, if it's been on the shelf a monh the hard drive only has a 2 month lifespan left..... (we bought our son a le-no-go at Christmas, it's on it's 3rd hard drive & has spent over 2 months out of action being repaired)

Wow, thank you. ...I can't believe I've not come across that one before.I'd thought that turning his Latitude into a Chromebook type OS would be a good idea, but the best I could find was Chromixium.
You think my sons Dell latitude is old, my wife's is even older, an ECS-G553 clone, which after trying several OS's on has now been given a new lease of live with Lubuntu 14.04, mainly as some of the other recent distros have problems with the lack of a PAE flag on it's CPU.Anyway, I upgraded the RAM, and it works great for her needs, and surprisingly nippy about it.However, my sons needs are going to mainly focus around access to specific school websites for homework / research etc, so something simpler than a true Linux build would be better. The main issue I've had with most Linux builds is getting them to work with our trusty Epson XP-305 which we all share via WiFi, which MS make so easy.I have to say your suggestion for what is essentially a browser / cloud based OS could be the answer, and since it's free well worth trying.I'll let you know how it works out, but his model is listed as supported so that's a good start. Having started out on a PET & TRS80 III, I appreciate computers more than most and always like to try and re-purpose them, so I've built gaming machines, jukeboxes etc all out of stuff most would have thrown away years ago.
Thanks again!
*UPDATE* I thought this might be a problem, it can't boot from USB! which is a real shame as this seemed to be a good solution, so I've gone with Chromixium which installed fine, and seems to work pretty well considering it's Ubuntu based, well it is a... get yourself prepapred... Dell C640 ...
Yep, it's very old, but is so well built it still looks like new, and just goes to prove what's possible to all those who moan you can't do this and that on computer or tablet because it's 12 months old.Obviously it's far from perfect, a bit laggy compared to running XP, but still very useable, which is amazing when you think it's 13 years old!

No, I expect a £300 laptop to last longer than 9 months.
If it fails within the warranty period I expect a repair, replacement or full refund. ie I should be put back in the position I was in before buying the faulty goods.

27 Oct 15#43
But you have had 9 months use out of the laptop so why should you be in the same position you bought the laptop. As I said you want and expect free computing!

27 Oct 15#44
I would say the fault lies with Lenovo who if they couldn't fix there own computer within the 12 month warranty period, should have replaced it with a brand new model either the same as you had or the equivalent model in a newer range..
Expecting the shop to replace the computer after 9 months is a little naughty in my eyes, as its not there fault it had a faulty screen..
Also if you had 9 months use of the product its hardly fair to expect the retailer to replace it as I said this is down to the manufacturer not the shop.
You should have demanded a replacement computer from Lenovo and not taken a voucher for a partial refund!
Hartley
27 Oct 15#45
If I had wanted to hire a laptop for 9 months I would have hired one. I bought a laptop expecting it to last a reasonable length of time, and I don't consider 9 months to be a reasonable length of time for a new laptop. It's all academic now, as I've now bought a laptop from Amazon, who do give a full refund if goods cannot be repaired within the warranty period.
Hartley
27 Oct 15#46
I could be wrong but I'm sure when you buy goods you enter into a contract with the retailer, not the manufacturer. Maybe I just want free computing  but I always assumed if goods developed a fault during the warranty period the retailer would either repair, replace or refund. I know Amazon do.

Amazon seem to be the exception to the rule!
