Netflix has a sharp appearance but it doesn't have the fine detail of a Blu-ray, the compression is too high.

I did watch this on Netflix last year but wanted to watch again, is there much of a difference in picture quality between Netflix and bluray?

Can't speak for BB but I've found both Prime and Netflix stream pretty well compared to physical HD releases. BB looked great on Netflix when I watched it.
Not quite the best show (Sopranos still edges it for me) but essential viewing.

I never have but according to the text at the bottom of the site they are part of Universal pictures and CBS so if that's true they should be fine.

"4K" ( you forgot the quotes). And Blu-ray beats that "4K" every time not to mention the sound and extras of course.

I know I'm a minority who think this, but I really didn't think Sopranos was that great  I so wanted to love it too :disappointed:
For me Breaking Bad is (so far) the best TV show I've ever seen. There wasn't many episodes I watched where I didn't want to start watching the next one straight away, I never really got that with Sopranos.
I loved Dexter too...Yeah I'm going well off subject here. Heat added!

Worth it even if you have seen it before. Think it is one of those shows you don't go back to often (i.e to watch odd episodes), but if you leave it 6 months then go back and watch from start to finish, it is an enjoyable experience to re-watch.

For the matter of clarity could you please provide your home theater configuration? To accurately compare sound/vision one need a high end TV(large) with high end audio setup I think.
brookysm
12 Oct 151#23
I have a 49UB850v TV coupled to a Sony HT XT3 Soundbase, both high end in their market. I don't have surround sound nor projection anymore owing to moving in together with the GF and her aversion to speakers and more importantly wires but prior to moving I was running a BenQ W6000 with an Onkyo TX 5.1 set up.

When someone says "To accurately compare sound/vision one need a high end TV(large) with high end audio setup I think", it's safe to say that for 99% of the population, the answer to "is there much of a difference in picture quality between Netflix and bluray" is "no".
KevClark1985
12 Oct 15#25
This is incorrect. I don't think you need top end equipment to notice the difference. I have last years Sony W8 model (42") which was about £500 with a soundbar. While it is a cracking TV, it is not out of reach for "99%" of the population, in fact it was quite a popular model, and you can absolutely tell the difference between netflix and blu-ray (in terms of picture quality).
The question is if paying extra for blu-ray would be worth it for most people (maybe not but that is debatable)

12 Oct 15#26
Thanks. Good enough system for comparing audio I reckon. Can you see a improved picture in "4k" netflix against bluray in your 49 inch telly?

This is because the benefit of Blu-Ray vs streaming is usually noticed best in colour definition and contrast, not resolution. With 4k TVs we're seeing a revamp of the old "megapixel" sales technique, where Currys salesmen would claim a Samsung point and shoot camera at 15mp would be "better" than an 8mp DSLR because it "had more pixels". There's *much* more going on than just the pure pixels on the screen. A high bitrate 1080p video (such as delivered by Blu-Ray, streaming at upwards of 30mbps) will look *much* better than Netflix's 15mpbs "4k" footage.
1080p is, loosely, 2 megapixels per image/frame. 4k is 8 megapixels. 8k is 32 megapixels. FWIW better results would be gained by manufacturers increasing framerate standards rather than resolution - it makes a much more noticeable difference to what you're watching. That's why The Hobbit caused such a stir - even just stepping up to 48fps creates a remarkable upgrade. I saw NHK's Ultra HD demos in 2012 and it was stunning - 8k at 120fps but to get benefit of 8k we had to be sat 12ft from a 33 foot screen

Netflix and the upcoming Ultra HD discs use HEVC encoding which has a twice as effective data compression so 15Mbps is, broadly speaking, equivalent to 30Mbps. However, Netflix and Amazon will soon start broadcasting in 10-bit HDR and that will look better than blu-ray. It may well be the case that the effective resolution of the HEVC 4k is superior to blu-ray because it'll use the bandwidth more effectively. Blu-ray has a tendency to sit around 20-25Mbps and only peak over 30-35Mbps for a short period. HEVC may sustain the higher bitrates and higher throughput resulting in more detailed images. I'd certainly hope so.

Everyone here is talking **** their ass can't cash. There is a Netflix episode of the first episode of Breaking Bad. It's over 20GB. ONE SINGLE BLURAY DISC IS below 50 and that contains multiple episodes. The episode in 4K is obviously superior in quality. SO STFU!

Also bare in mind that Netflix and Prime are currently streaming at 30mhz, half the speed 4k is designed to run at due to processing and bandwidth.
One of the biggest differences between DVD and Blu Ray besides the increase in resolution is that usually the audio isn't compressed on Blu Ray, whereas obviously it is via HEVC 4k , that will be one of the main advantages of 4k Blu Ray besides the increase to a full speed frame update if encoded. Iirc a 4k triple layer Blu Ray will hold 100gb of data but according to manufacturer's that still may not be enough to contain the movie AND extras in some cases so the throughput of data will be huge!

Yes, Amazon and Netflix are only doing 30Hz. I just got a nVidia Shield though which can do full 60Hz;).
If the compression of audio under HEVC is good I guess that leaves more room for picture detail. Still haven't got a 4K set to try it on but I'll probably jump in the New Year.
No idea why people imagine that streaming 4k is worse than blu-ray.
