Buy Apple only with extended warranty, ideally from Apple, otherwise reputable dealers like John Lewis. Avoid "deals" from random online retailers who don't understand their obligations as sellers.
I'll not be buying Apple again (yes, I was a fanboy). Having just experienced my iPhone 5S die 13 months into a 24 month contract, I was told by Apple to go away. I bought online from buymobiles.net. Yeah, avoid them too.

I am looking for an iPad with more than 16gb, thanks for the heads up, normally deal with the Apple Store but I'll check this out, my 64gb iPad 1 is still going strong even though it's on iOS 5, my daughter uses it now, not sure why some people have issues with the stores, I've only ever found them helpful beyond, my iPhone 4s was sorted with a software fault this year even though I've had it for nearly 3 yrs, I bought an old MacBook from 2006 with a faulty power adapter and cracked lower case, they replaced it free of charge, so for me it's a no brainier to stick with em!

Got to love the haters. If you read up on it Apple was taken to court by trading standards and forced to change its policy. If you don't believe me read the page and go in and ask apple what it means.
At no point in the page does it say the 6 month rule. Also the law recently changed to give use consumers more power. Good luck with getting anywhere whilst quoting SOGA. Like their products but their post sales service on a very little used iPad (under 2-Yrs old) was abysmal. Basically did not want to know unless a £29.00 (approx) fee was paid along with repair charges as applicable. SOGA was referenced to but still they were insistent on charging the above fees. Asked for issue to be escalated and was not.

Costco does better price iPad 3 64gb for £337 silver at Leicester store. 2 years warranty. You can extend warranty to 5 years if you contact Costco customer service for cost. John Lewis don't cover dead pixel if it occurs and voids warranty check terms. Costco also do iPad mini 4 for £390 64gb not sure which colour it was and also do iPad Air 2 price not sure of but huge discount compare to Apple Store.

Friday 16th October, JLS began offering 3 year guarantee until 4th November.
So I bought an iPad, but they messed up their system so guarantee I was sent by eMail only stated 2 years. Customer Services were useless and told me that they would reply to my complaint in 2 days. They didn't seem to understand that this was a serious issue !
deany76
18 Oct 15#56
But just to be totally clear here it is an _additional_ 2 year guarantee.
An ipad may fail in the first year (I think the stats say year one is most likely year for this reliable device) if so take it to the apple store, if one is nearby, they'll give you a new one!!
From 365 to 1,095 days then go back to JLP with it.
ps
look out for 'dead pixels' and 'back light bleeding' again not a problem anymore but check within a few days of purchase.
deany76
18 Oct 15#55
A 3 year gaurantee is brilliant, especially if its free and with arguably UKs most respected retailer.
First 365 is covered by apple anyway so device will probably get swapped out by apple.
('applecare' only covers days 366 to 730 and costs.)
JLP with this deal covers days 366 to 1,095 FREE !!
Thats 17,520 hours _extra_ FREE 'peace of mind' cover!!
I'm sorry why are we even discussing this? if you want an ipad its a brilliant offer, go to JLP, thanks again OP.

yes its a strange one, and you'd probably get two JLP partners give you different information.
The website does say 90 days you are right. However it does also say and I quote:
''
• It's important that any unwanted item, unless faulty, is returned in a re-saleable condition. We'd expect this to mean that you've kept all original packaging and labels, and that it's undamaged and unused''
It could be argued that in 2 months time your ipad if returned due to being unwanted wouldn't qualify due to the above JLP quote. ie its been used.
I get the feeling (and had good personal experience with this) that even if its used and within 28 days there is no quibble.
Where as if you go into the 28 day plus territory then they may quote you the statement above, which wouldn't be what you'd want to hear.
I personally would always have the 28 day return in my mind from JLP with a view that even if it has been used (like your ipad) then they wont question you.
It is also worth noting that they will mention if passwords have been entered on the ipad (if you are going to return it) tell them you have restored it to 'factory settings'. Which I'm sure you'd do anyway.
I'm not an expert on this but I dont want you to get in a 'misunderstanding' with them.
I hope this helps.

Statutory means legal minimum. ALL UK RETAILERS have a six year minimum warrant by law. BUT, after 6 months and upto 6 years you may have to prove the fault developed within the first 6 months from purchese. Very hard to prove. The only reason apple might be happy to help out is because of having a normally great customer service.
deany76
17 Oct 15#41
yes definitely take it back and explain. They should just give you an extra year without swapping it. If your happy with the one you have it would make sense for them to just add a third year rather than swap it. You have 28 days no quibble so no rush either. I think Nerval said 30 but they probably wouldn't even hold you to that their such a good company.

Technically you are covered up to 6 years for defects arising from manufacture etc. Sales of goods, act gives you that.
But in reality, to avoid hassle, try get a reputable warranty in the first place. Or buy extended. Smart phone, smart watches, new tablets etc.. they are getting more complex with more to go wrong. Apple only give their phones 1 year manufacturer warranty, Microsoft 2 years and not sure about Samsung. Had I purchased from a network, I suspect they would have dealt with my claim (the screen backlight failed two weeks after 1year warranty "expired") within my 24 month contract. As I purchased from some fly by night jokers with a flashy website (buymobiles.net), I have to fight my way. Never again. I'll only buy from reputable dealers or ideally from manufacturer. Apple not so sure, I like my iPad, I like their products, but I can't actually do any work apart from looking busy writing emails. 17 Oct 151#35
Yes, I currently have a Section 75 claim pending with my credit card company. Failing that, I'll just proceed with a small claim. Buymobiles will fold either way, it will cost them more than the claim. Sales of goods act is ok when sellers actually understand their obligations.

Accidental damage cover _not_ included but should be viable on your home content insurance if you have a reasonably low excess.
JLP will try and sell you accident damage cover, at point of sale, so get price for this over the phone from them & check your excess with your insurer and decide if you want the accident damage cover before going in store to pick up you shinny new ipad.
Thank you OP
are you referring to the amazon sellers who aren't VAT registered and based in China?
