A few things to see in and around Riga - Jurmala beach (very easy train ride - the railways are really efficient and cheap), Salaspils Memorial Park (again, cheap train ride followed by a wander through the woods to get there - beware of wolves, wolverines and bears....) and also Riga Zoo which is nice at night (plus extremely cheap after IIRC 4pm or so)

The actual Ice Hotel was a constant and rather balmy -5C.... We hit the low temperatures on a dog sled trip (no wind chill involved, -43 was the actual temperature - this was early January 2011) - it was bizarre when we stopped midway for some food at a wooden cabin in the middle of a forest, our guide lit the roaring fire inside and we started to peel off our outer clothes before he hurriedly stopped us, explaining it was still -25C inside the cabin....
I love Sweden and would happily go back there tomorrow.
As it happens, we got engaged in Riga the year previously when there was massively deep snow all over the city, albeit the temperature only got down to about -10 or so.
Honeymoon was Vietnam and Cambodia, so a bit warmer. :sunglasses:

It's about 4 hrs so obviously not just a day trip so perhaps overnight in Tallinn then back to Riga, bus transportation cheap too.

We go away for the weekend every March with friends. The year before we went to Copenhagen. Now that was expensive!!!

Good offer. We went on the same flight to Riga in March (though not January) and it was milder than here. We were there for three nights - too long; two is enough. I didn't find it expensive, to be honest; eating out was very good.

I would recommend eating as much Solanka as you can while you're there to keep warm

It's already snowing in Riga, and that'll stick around til at least March probably. Expect a very cold stay while you're there  At least they're used to it and clear the roads though, everything functions as normal

I'll take your -37 and raise (err, lower) it to -43. Me and the Mrs got married at the Ice Hotel in Northern Sweden. It was astonishingly cold. But fantastic.

Yikes! And that's not just the temperature but the price of the Swedish Ice Hotel!! I stayed in the one in Transylvania but it was only about minus 10. Surprisingly slept very well.

It was early March if memory serves me well. The following winter in Lithuania I went expecting the same but temperature didn't get below Zero. Strange how the weather works.

We did Lapland at Christmas a few years back. Christmas Day was -37. On a sled with wind chill = -55. Kids crying everywhere . At that temp exposed skin turns purple and starts to flake off. Marvellous !

Minus 34 is the coldest temperature i've ever been in. It was in Riga around 7 or 8 years ago & i also got frozen nostrils. I purchased a bowl of tomato soup from a cafe & put the bowl on my nose
Best part of it was that i said to the waitress that it was " very cold today " to which she replied " it's not so bad " . Must be damn tough those Latvians

People must bear in mind Wizzair's baggage allowance is slightly less than Ryanair / Easyjet .
