why is being able to set a cap better? being on PAYG you cant EVER run up a bill, so comparing it to a monthly contract with a cap is next to useless.

I'd suggest you look at one of those articles that tell you how to set your phone up in a better way. I'd guess you have all kind of apps that you've allowed to do background updates which are sucking at your data allowance (and performance) all of the time when they aren't really needed.
Not all people use a 4G signal for viewing videos - it's a real benefit for web browsing or many apps that are otherwise limited by internet speed. If you've used 4G and then travel to an area without it you really notice it - even if you don't use that much data.
Perhaps those who think 4G is unnecessary for light users are still using WAP?
This looks a good deal for those who don't have a 4G phone, and will make it easy for them to move to the 4G world when they are ready.

Spot on service for me,left giffgaff due to very poor signals,joined post office and its been great ,if they keep the prices for a long time and not get greedy ,they will keep customers .keep up the great service.

For those wanting to know, (like me), what network Post Office Mobile, and Life Mobile uses, they both use the EE network.

For anyone else curious, the customer service is superb out of Post Office Mobile. I've emailed them a couple of queries and they've always come back within a day.

Also, the bonus top-up (first one per month) is great. Put £10 on, get £10 extra. So i've got £10 to spend if I go over my bundle.

Is the data 4g or 3g only

Will be only be 3G signal as EE wouldn't share 4G yet

Honestly Im not even able to use the 500mb data if I'm frugal, I had before plan with only 100mb/month and it was just fine for checking emails/quick not-often browsing when you really need it.
If you have no life whatsoever and use your phone nonstop than this probably isnt for you tho.

4g brings nothing to the party with such minuscule allowances, other than better penetration in to certain types of building.

That depends on how patient you are I think. My 4g data connection on O2 is about 20 times faster than the 3G connection is/was and it's the same price per month as 3G. So although I may only be downloading emails, browsing social media and the odd webpage per day I'd rather have 4G than not have it. If the P.O. do the same thing and have 4G the same price as 3G why an earth would you refuse an upgrade.

Free credit seems a bit pointless, would have been great to use it on calls abroad. Still a good deal though.

I've been on this for a couple of months now and I have to say its been a great moneysaver for me. I had a few niggles to begin with setting up payment details but all was quickly sorted and whenever I called their Customer Service I quickly managed to speak to a real person. A complete change from Orange who I was with before whose Customer Service was next to non-existent!

I switched to the Post Office (from giffgaff) when somebody posted the deal a couple of months back, and couldn't be happier. Everything went smoothly, I had a minor problem the 2nd month, won't bore anyone with the details but they sorted it very well and the great thing was that when I phoned they answered within a few rings and were extremely helpful, pretty rare for a mobile provider. Also their website is nicely designed, can find everything you need, easy to manager your account and see what you've used. I'm on the £10pm bundle and its good value

Yeah, most people really don't need 4G at the moment, I guess that's why most of the marketing for it seems to be based around trying to convince people they need it. Plus it makes me laugh when they offer it with such ridiculously small monthly allowances.

Also, I love how networks keep including it at no extra cost, yet if you look at what they all charge for data compared to a year or two back we're sure as anything all paying extra for it!

Been using this for a few months, great and no problems. Only pain is the minimum automatic top-up you can set up is £10 every 30 days so i have to manually top it up every 2 months instead.

Don't forget that Greedy BT with very expensive everything is taking over EE so expect everything to rise in line with BT high prices soon.
I am dreading their broadband ,phone call and landline costs when they start ripping us off. The rot has already started to show with EE now showing little interest in broadband customers by removing what was a good homepage, news and search facility removed without any warning ,no apologies and no interest from the indian call centre that can take nearly an hour to get an answer from.

I've been using this for about 6 weeks. Customer services are not quite competent -- billing is handled by another company and apparently their IT systems break really easily. I've just got my PAC and have ordered LIFE Mobile's £5 30-day contract (500 minutes, 500 texts, 500 MB) to which I will be porting my number rather than using the PO's £5 bundle.

(PO does give you £5 worth of "free credit" with a £5 top-up that you can use even after spending your £5 on the 250 minute/500 MB bundle, but that can't be used towards a bundle or, effectively, services not even covered by the bundle, and if you top up and buy a bundle at the same, time, will expire after a month -- so around the same time as the bundle. So if you use a bundle I'm not sure how useful the credit is, unless you run out of the bundle allowances. Or you could try to carefully use up the free credit before buying a bundle but you'd have to be careful not to overshoot and eat into your paid topup amount, and the £5 "free credit" doesn't seem to go far.)

Half a gig of data a month is plenty for a phone, at least for me -- I seem to use about 300-400 MB a month. The key seems to be a setting on my Android phone to "Restrict background data". Works wonders. (Then again I don't stream music or video except on Wi-Fi -- about all I use mobile data for is things like Google Maps, Moovit, CityMapper and Chrome, and my microSD card is good for everything else..)

4G is better, regardless of your data limit. Faster downloads speeds are always preferable.

Half as many minutes and half the data allowance for the same price, but my understanding is that if you start a rolling contract with the summer allowances, as long as you stay rolling, you keep the allowances even after the offer ends. That is, you only need to start the rolling contract while the offer is available; subsequently you keep the allowances. (As is always the case though I fully expect the usual inflation linked tariff hikes over the next year that pay-monthly often incurs.)

PO provide 3,000 texts for the same price that LIFE mobile provide 500, but for someone like me that hardly matters.

There's also a month's tariff worth of cash back from TCB for LIFE mobile pay monthly signups ongoing.

I bought this sim over a month ago. The signal at my home is not very good but I have never found a sim that is. I needed to call up PO help line yesterday from my landline and within seconds a helpful guy answered he said the phones are manned 7 days a week something like 8am till 8pm.

Just what I was thinking. On a weekday I leave my house where I have WiFi at 0640. I have a 40 minute commute. I'm on the work WiFi from 0720 till 1630. I have a 40 minute commute home where I'm back on home WiFi from 1720 onwards. When do people use all this data? If I'm out I'm generally shopping/at a restaurant/day out with family I just can't think when I would be streaming movies on the go? The adverts suggest people do it whilst fishing or on the underground or just standing on the street corner, but I don't believe they do.

I have 10GB of throwaway data since I have a 4GEE contract and EE Home Broadband (I didn't take it for that reason). I use about 2GB a month just using Spotify and YouTube. If I didn't have the data, I'd just download it all on my WiFi like you say.

i'm currently with the post office, in theory, excellent deals but in real life, dreadful..... the data is poor and i've had the most loss of signal than ever before, needless to say i've ordered my PAC to move to someone else.

Although they operate on the EE network, it doesn't seem to have the proper infrastructure as yet to make it compete. This is purely my opinion but only after 2 months, i've had enough..........

What an absolutely stupid comment! Having recently gone over to 4G the difference is unbelivable. 3G was frustrating to use as it was so slow. I do not use wifi at all as my 4G is lightening fast and it is on 24/7 even so i do not use anywhere near my 5GB allowance.

I would never go back to a 3G connection.

It should be restated that adding £5 credit to your account can only be done instore. i.e you need to be at a Post Office branch. For other top-up amounts (£10,£15,£20,£25 & £30), you can do this over the phone with your card, or on-line.

Which is a pain if your local Post Office has closed down, your easiest option is to top up £10 minimum. But if you only want the £5 bundle - bear in mind that your Bonus credit will only last you 30 days. So you will have to keep in mind that you don't have bonus credit for the second month, so be mindful when sending MMS (which can be paid by the the Bonus credit) in the 2nd month.

On the subject of MMS, (I know there are other cheaper/free ways), but you can in effect send 25 MMS on the free £10 Bonus credit in the 30day period after you top-up. But bear in mind you need data to send the pic (about 0.05MB per pic).

I am currently on Giffgaff but since the new bundles took my unlimited data I was looking at the peoples operator as a better deal. it uses EE and offers more data than Giffgaff for similar prices plus 10% of your spend goes to the charity of your choice.

I've been a tester for post office and been using it for the last 6 months and can confirm it's been great. Handy app, easy to check allowance and no problems with signal so long as you can get an ee signal where you are.

I'm a PO mobile customer & daughter too love it best move I made from rip off O2. Customer service are excellent and UK based can't fault them

Well, that was special. Got my LIFE Mobile SIM today. Attempted to port my number over from PO. As deanos warned, the port didn't go through as both are MVNOs through the Transatel MVNE. Except neither the CSR nor his supervisor were able to figure out a way to do a manual port. So I cancelled the LIFE Mobile contract as there was no point in having it without my phone number. I guess I'll stick with PO for now until an MVNO on another network looks attractive enough to switch. The wonders of PAYG I suppose.

I think I'm so far from using my minutes allowance even at 250 minutes that the hassle of ordering another LIFE Mobile contract (as mine is now cancelled), calling up the CSR and suggesting getting the technical department to do it, and so on wouldn't really result in sufficient benefit for me to be worth it.

I did figure out that the PO online top-up form doesn't validate the amount so I used Firefox's Developer Tools to change the amount to be topped up on the form and was able to top up by £5 online, including the £5 free allowance. I'll probably end up writing a Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey user script to add a £5 top-up to that online form. That gets rid of my #1 concern.

Sim received yesterday got my PAC from TPO, filled out the online form last night and phone number transferred over this morning. Straightforwards so far!

You buy a £5 credit every month (from an actual Post Office) & then a £5 bundle every month keeping the same SIM and number. If you wanted different numbers / multiple SIMS you could do that I suppose by getting additional SIMS. Make sure you understand how to get best value out of Post Office Mobile by reading the ins and outs of it as the ordinary call rates are nothing special it's just the £5 bundle that is an outstanding deal compared to other Pay As Yo Go offerings.

I was going to post a thread about the Post Office mobile. As they seem cheap!!! The 2Gig tariff cought my eye. Only £10 a mouth. There are a few other mobile company's at about the same price but require a contract. The good thing about pay as you go us you just to up when you need it. For example I only use my mobile on my days off. So if my add on runs out on a week day I'll just leave it until I need to use phone. A quick text and phone if topped up from card. Not really much hassle as only takes 30 seconds.

I went to my local post office yesterday and the assistant told me they don't stock them. If the post office is trying to make money from their sims Does one would have thought all post offices would stock them.

Seems to be a decent deal, but for my usage I think I am better off with Three PAYG.

I typically use about 100 mins, 10 texts and 100 MB data per month, so I just top up £5 whenever I feel like I need to use some data (getting a 200 MB 30-day allowance thrown in, and these are stackable). In London this is often unnecessary with free Wifi on the tube, coffee shops etc.

If I suddenly need to make lots of calls or use a lot of data, the marginal cost is much lower than with the Post Office (3p versus 8p a minute and 1p versus 10p per MB, texts 2p versus 10p). If I plan to use a lot, I can buy an add-on, and I like the Feel-at-home stuff on holiday, the cheap international calling (with short codes ex UK).

I would prefer EE's network though, probably even without 4G (not sure).

Free bonus credits only be used for voice mail and MMS and they only last 30 days, so only useful if you have used up the bundle for that month.

got one just to use abroad for the week, £10 for 200mb & 60 txts for 7 days is ample for me, better than on my 3 mobile plus no danger of a high unexpected bill.

What way does this bonus credit work. I've just loaded £10 and bought a £5 bundle. I take it the bonus is used first if I go over my allowance before the £5 i have left on my account? Also would the bonus cover premium numbers my bundle might not before touching my £5 in my account?

Just found out that Post Office apply an internet content block on their sims (so do GiffGaff, TalkTalk and many others I'm sure) ... however, Post Office cannot (will not?) remove theirs ... regardless of your age!
