Freedom Pop is a mobile operator now available to everyone in the UK. They are similar to Ovivo, but appear to be going about things the right way by previously operating in the USA, and also raising large amounts of funding.
Great for light or emergency use.

If mobiles.co.uk cease trading, how much total redemption cashback will you lose? Compared to:
If FreedomPop cease trading, how much money would you lose?
Clue: one amount is huge; one amount is miniscule.

Including turning the phone on and off, the method Rimi used is quicker than swapping the sims, only takes a few clicks to go through each and transfer the data, probably less than five minutes work in total each month, just a bit of a faff.

May have been easier to just swap out sims and use the full 200mb in each sim?

Not sure, my old Android 5.1 had an app that managed permissions to do that with. You might find an app on the Play Store that manages and restricts permissions if you need one, possibly this or this. Or people on the forums did find a version of the app that worked without restricting using another sim: link (this is worth the read anyway I think).

It works, I have tried the app recently on a dual sim phone with GiffGaff and Life mobile sims in it. There are a couple of things to do though, the app tries to take over all calls, but in Android 6.0 there is an app permissions screen, turn off the permissions for 'Phone' and 'SMS'. The other thing to do is log onto your Freedompop account online and turn off the 'Incoming Premium Voice Preference' option, this is free and probably enabled on your account, but what it does is when an incoming call comes in, it pings the app over data (wifi/4g/3g) and then sends the call to the sim card over GSM, meaning if the sim isn't in the phone the call goes to voicemail. Turn it off and the incoming call goes over data connection as well.
Thanks - that's really helpful. I'm actually running Android 5.1 - do you happen to know if I will be able to disable to relevant permissions for the Freedompop app so that I can use it alongside my existing SIM?

I know what are you saying.....max you get is 900MB a month.
When the offered free sims with free delivery, I have ordered 8 sims on different names, with pre-paid Visa as payment method and was gifting myself 100MB from each sim; no need to beg on forums. But all this hassle...for people who believes they can have FP as main sim.

Yeah that is a good deal and probably the best recommendation for low users to be fair, especially as a single sim for all uses. However the main advantage I see in Freedompop on the data side is that it can be boosted easily, so 200MB on delivery, boost to 400MB with a few minutes work, and then if you need more, you can request on the forums and people send over some spare date, or get additional sims to use as donors and transfer the data, that is a bit of a faff though and if you need much more than 400MB per month it would be far easier to just pay for a data tariff.

additional 1MB cost 1p, same as 1-2-3 PAYGO rates.
You can buy data bundle; 2GB - £15, 5GB - £20, 10GB - £25

Not sure what your comment has to do with the comment of mine you quoted, but whatever. You have already made it clear that it is not a deal for you, and if you intend to have a single sim for everything and require it to be a perfect mobile network, then I am in complete agreement to pay for another network. However you have yourself listed a few examples of people who would get on with this, those like myself who primarily use it for data and do not have huge data needs, people who only need to use the phone once in a while. There is a market that this free offer does work for.

I know more than you think mate...
I can make calls without problems and without sim. Also when transferred number, same number still alive on FreedomPop so when I call from Freedompop it shows my number I transferred..they said to write email when transfer complete,so account can be closed completely, but nothing has been done and I don't care anymore.....
This crappy FreedomPop offer might be for some skinflints, people short on money,or for persons who use phone once a month,or for those who use internet only, but not for me. It is not worth a headache if you have money to pay for real GSM quality and reliability.

I have a Freedompop SIM and have a simple question: is it possible to make calls over wifi if you're not on a premium plan (i.e. if you're on the zero cost plan).
I have never been able to make calls over wifi (i.e. when I don't have a 3G connection), so was wondering if this was just a normal limitation of the free plan.

Just tried out the FreedomPop app again for calls and texts, texting worked fine. Made a call, and it has improved since launch, the other side said there was no echo, we tested for a delay and there was about a 1 second delay between us.
Tested if I could still call and text from my other sim, and the app had killed the ability to call out, until I went into the app permissions screen of Android 6 and switched off the FreedomPop access to Phone and SMS. Switching off SMS gave no error, switching of Phone said that it may no longer act as it should. Tested again and everything was working now. So for now my dual sim phone has three phone numbers.
One more thing I noticed, I put my FreedomPop sim in another handset for the moment to use for data, if someone calls the FP number it rings on the sim card, but if they text it goes to the app. You cannot ring or text from the phone with the sim in outside of the app (as expected). The delay is still there for incoming calls as well, just a little odd that an incoming call goes to the sim card rather than the app. If you switch off the phone with the sim card in or do not have the sim in a handset, then the incoming call goes to voicemail (where the voicemail message gives a different mobile number before asking you to leave a message).
Edit: I think I have just found the reason that incoming calls go to the sim rather than the app, there is a new setting that wasn't there at launch, "Incoming Premium Voice Preference: Enabled", since I am still showing no premium services enabled anywhere else, it seems this is a free option.

Similar to my setup until recently. My recommendation is a dual sim phone, Freedompop set up for data and calls, and Giffgaff as a backup, then other people you know on Giffgaff can call and text you free as well (or choose another network if you know people on that network who benefit from free calling within their network).
However, since I got the £1 per month Life Mobile deal I have swapped out the Freedompop sim for the Life Mobile one, annoyingly the 3G signal coverage on Life Mobile is dreadful, and I am trying to decide what to do going forwards as I want to use the Life Mobile data when possible as it is 4GB per month until December but could do with the excellent Freedompop coverage, and to top that Giffgaff is my main number which everyone I know has and I don't want to migrate that for just a few months use and lose my credit.

I am using it in a dual sim phone and would never rely on it 100% for calls/txts as they are routed over data connection, and therefore I have the second sim as backup which is a standard 2g O2 sim. Seems like you were trying to be too cheap and trying to use it as your main phone! If you try to be too cheap then you need to have a backup plan, in may case dual sim phone!

Horses for courses, it really is. I have had mine since launch, but as I have stated numerous times and advised people again and again, I only used it for data, I did send a few texts through the app and make a couple of calls when they launched to test it which ran basically fine and am now planning to put the app on as an additional call/text option as well, but never recommend it as a primary. My experience has been good and I have only paid for the first sim card, been on the free plan since.
1. Never received a call on it as it isn't my primary number, the few texts received arrived fine (as I was having a conversation over text to test it).
2. Not tested enough of the calls, had reasonable quality with a slight echo for the other person at times.
3. My payment info is up to date and has never been asked to be re-entered, it is linked to a valid credit card. I have heard people trying to link to a pre-paid card have had problems though.
4. Not used customer services, but based on comments by users on the official forums they do seem to respond quite reasonably.
You saying avoid at all costs suggests nobody should ever use it, yet all your problems seem linked to using it as your only sim and call plan, yet a large number of us using it as a data plan and non-primary sim have reported fine experiences, I personally get better data signal with FreedomPop than Life Mobile. Everyone needs to consider their own personal needs and decide accordingly.

How long you are with this FPooo???
I know 11 mates, who have one or another problem with them. I had too many...so now left FPoo for good and warn others. I suspect if you don't take any paid option, they do these problems on purpose, as all these who have paid plan runs more or less smoothly.
1. I had many missed calls and texts and finally nobody can contact me-phone just doesn't ring!Firstly on 3/4G only, later on wi-fi too. When I open FP app it shows missed calls/txts, but thats not good for me!
2. Call quality is hit and miss too; one day all is OK, next quality is just crap and I even can't understand what other part is trying to say. 96% of people I call complains about echoes and asks me to redial them as this echoes are very annoying..
3. Every 30 days service just hangs until I have re-entered payment details, even I am on free plan and my payment info is up to date. Nobody can reach me this time and I can't call anybody. Texts sent to me this time just disappears and I never get them.
4. Customer services are non-competent to solve any problem. They just send e-mai with troubleshooting guide which is useless. After that- just email that they didn't heard within 48 hours and case is closed(even I have sent 5 emails this timed clearly told them problem is not solved) Check this video out. Not sorted until now

So you need to be connected to wifi to make/receive a call?
nige182
23 Jul 16#683
As it is a VOIP service and calls and texts work via the app over either Wifi or 4G/3G, you can be anywhere in the world and call family in the UK within your call and text allowance and they can call you on your UK mobile number with no additional charge. However, if you are outside the UK and not connected to Wifi, then I do not know if you will be charged for data usage which would be required to make and receive calls as well. If however you went to say Australia or America and got a local sim with data plan for your stay, then you can carry on using the FreedomPop app using the data of that local sim with no additional charges.

nige182
21 Jul 16#681
Only £5.99 now as just checked their website.
Number porting is currently not available: source. I believe they said it will be a chargeable service when it is.
VOIP is voice over IP, as in the audio is sent over the internet rather than a traditional phone line. This means it is sent over wifi when connected to that, or 4G, or 3G in that order and will not work when there is only a GSM signal. Though signal availability if your phone is 4G shouldn't be a problem, and being on the Three network, even 3G coverage is pretty good. The problem with VOIP is that you have to use their app for calls and that there may be a noticeable lag or echo on the call.

21 Jul 161#679
They have been doing them free with free delivery for a while as well but I think that has stopped and back to £7 now.
The catch has been explained, but basically there are a few caveats.
1. You need to ensure you manually disable the automatic top-up option, and do not sign up to any of the free trials for things like premium calls, and reduce to the basic free package as soon as possible (ie. on delivery or even before just to be safe).
2. Sign up to the forums and join Freedom Friends to boost your 200MB free data up to 400MB.
3. The inclusive calls and texts require the FreedomPop app and work on a VOIP service so call quality is not the greatest, with lag and/or echo possible.
4. They keep your credit card on file and if you ever go over the allowance, they auto-bill it. This shouldn't happen as your account should be restricted first, but there is apparently a delay between usage and it showing on the account.
I have never been billed since the initial charge myself, the 400MB data is 4G (if that matters to you), and I found sufficient and with excellent coverage on the Three network, not sure if that would be enough for Pokémon Go, but there are ways to boost the data further. I have used very little of the calls and texts, but would strongly recommend going for this in a dual sim phone primarily for data and backup calls/texts, with say a GiffGaff or other primary sim for calls with your main number on rather than porting that number over.

Which app do you use? "FreedomPop Messaging" or "FreedomPop Free Call and Text", the leaflet with the sim says that for Android to use "FreedomPop Messaging" and for iOS to use "FreedomPop Free Call and Text", but both apps exist on Android and their descriptions seem to suggest the latter is for UK and the first is for US.

Actually I'd prefer if it would over take the dialler as I don't like having to copy the number into the FP app.

zaheer2003
20 Jul 16#673
yes it's great for money savers like me who use it in a dual sim phone. The FP app no longer overtakes the standard phone dialler or messaging so works well in the background.

You can get that from the official forums, need to sign up to their forums and then join the 'Freedom Friends' group.
I was only using it for data, but swapped it out for the £1 per month 4GB data Life Mobile plan. However, annoyingly EE don't seem to have invested in any 3G at all (EE only share 3G with MVNOs), I get data signal on Life Mobile in so few areas, mainly city centre only. Freedompop gave me data everywhere.

Difficult to gauge the workings from that article and who might be at risk (all customers, those who meet certain criteria), however based on the wording of parts of it, this sounds like it would apply to customers who have their Freedompop number as their SMS/phone verification number on their Halifax account only. I won't go into too much detail but I believe from reading that article that anyone who has not put their Freedompop number into their bank account as a contact number should be ok for now.

You won't get better deal for data than FP offers; 200MB free, introduce 20 friends(easy as 1-2-3,just read their forum) - 200MB. Already have 400MB monthly for free. Now,introduce "fake" friends , and every month request from them 100MB,max 500MB can be requested. Now we have 900MB free. Install Android app from their page - 200MB extra. (can do this monthly,I am doing this 4th month in a row) So all together 1100MB a month for free.

Porting your main number to FreedomPop is a very silly thing to do.
Outbound calls and inbound calls are just terrible, and have you even tried using their Android app to send a text? It gets badly formatted - if your text is more than a few lines long you can't scroll down to see what you've just typed.
Sorry, but with the Three Data Reward SIMs out now there is simply no reason to use FreedomPop apart from the 200MB free data.

Had my account suspended on FP today. 1 day left of the current cycle I've used zero minutes no data and 40 text messages. Called the UK support and was told that the billing team will open at 13:13 UK time. Which sounds odd. It was an offshore operators who said she worked in sales. I did chose the support option when I dialed in.
Notice a lot of folk have reported issues like this moving from one billing period to another. This is a free account so not sure why a billing error would apply - I'm well below any limits.

Yes kill the FP App its called messenger, select the app from the app draw and stop the app. You then get the stock dialer reinstated. I need some "expert" help
I have found the service excellent. I can make calls via 3/4G and my home broadband with good quality.
However if I want to receive calls the Freedompop Messenger App must be active.
This occasionally get closed by the task manager when memory becomes low.
Is there anyway to make sure it stays active in memory?
Also I use Rebtel for International calls.
It traps International numbers when using normal mobile services but with Freedompop (probably because it is a VoIP service itself) it also tries to dial the International number creating a conflict when dialing from the contact list.
Is there anyway around this?
Thanks for any help

I have not been charged so "you'll get charged no matter what" is clearly a false statement. Yes you will get charged if you exceed the limits, which due to the 3 hours time delay in reported data used is possible to do if you are not careful. Again that has been discussed if you actually read the thread. For clarification, I have been using mine in a handset with Whatsapp running and occasionally opening a game that uses data connection (Family Guy). No Facebook, browsing or watching videos that eat through data whilst out. I am also checking my data usage on their website every other day just to check how close I am, last month I ended the month using 250MB of my free 400MB allowance.
Don't get me wrong, this certainly is NOT for everybody, and I wouldn't recommend anyone use it as their main sim, but if you have a low data usage requirement like I do for a second handset or a dual sim phone then why pay for data you don't have to?

Thanks, ordered both the asda and the giffgaff sims. Will see which one works better round here for the 2G element.
nige182
20 Nov 15#627
I would say GiffGaff PAYG is one of the better options, free calls and texts to other GiffGaff members for three months after top up, then after the three months as long as you make a call or send a text every so often it won't expire, when you top up again you get the free calls and texts again for three months as usual.
It sounds like if you are in a data area its fine, otherwise forget it. I seem to remember Three used to piggyback O2 for 2G, I'm guessing these are just on Three hence the issues.
Anyone know of a PAYG SIM that will receive texts and not expire if I don't put credit on it?
nige182
20 Nov 15#624
I have had no trouble with texts, only sent about a dozen over a few days and all got through straight away as I had immediate or nearly immediate replies, though that was at home on Wifi at the time. Done a few calls and the call quality is rather poor, again on Wifi. Data is fine for Android apps, got 9 days left and 80MB remaining at the moment so the 200MB is proving to be ok, though a bit more would be nice to give a bit more buffer. Downside is that nobody I know wants to risk the network at the minute as they all need a complete package in one sim so I can't get referral bonuses to boost data a bit.

Not exactly, this uses voip for calls and texts through their app. If you don't pay for any addons and stick to just the free package, then it is basically a data only sim (think between Samba and Ovivo, data only like Samba with the ability to earn one time boosts of data by completing offers, but with allowance that refreshes each month like Ovivo) but with their own voip app for calls and texts (think Whatsapp/Skype but not as good quality), except usage of minutes and texts apparently don't come out of the data allowance.

It is pretty much an unavoidable reality that if you try and make voice calls over 3G, then it will be poor. 3G has much higher latency than a landline broadband connection. So there will always be a delay (/echo). 4G improves latency...but I don't think FreedomPop use 4G?
It's a crap service. Just consider it to be 200mb of data per month, and forget about the calls aspect.

Signed up for this, but immediately cancelled requesting a refund after reading up on how service works in more detail. Apparently can't make/receive calls and SMS unless you have a data signal (and enabled) - so not a proper voice SIM as advertised, and can't disabled mobile data when not in use. Also don't support porting in a number. All-in-all - OP's description fails to accurately describe the nature of the service IMO - but perhaps they didn't realise, FP's wording is very misleading.

Anyone using FreedomPop on a dual sim phone? I have a one plus two dual SIM with FP in SIM1 and a Three 321 PAYG in SIM2. I have installed the FP app (the FP sim needs to be active otherwise the app says "You have run out of premium something or other for this month try disconnecting from Wi-Fi") and can sent SMS over FP (using Wifi) and incoming calls work both on FP and Three (321 PAYG) However I'm unable to call 333 (Three CS) and all calls regardless of which SIM I used for the call show up on the callers screen with my FP number.
I can disable the FP SIM under setting then calls appear as normal as coming from my Three 321 PAYG number.
Not a huge problem. I've not tried the mobile data yet. I suppose its more complex as both SIMs are on the Three network.
Would love to hear if anyone has any tips on how to setup dual SIM with FP especially on the One Plus Two with a 321 PAYG SIM. I've tried all the options for setting a default SIM for Calls, Data, SMS and think the FP apps changes some of the settings.
I noticed that basically I can only use one SIM active at a time. If I enable both SIMs only the first active SIM actually gets a signal. But if I only enable one all is fine.
Also killing the FP app allows me to call out using my 321 PAYG SIM card and shows the correct number (not the FP number) so it is the messenger app from FP that is faking the caller ID. I've got part of the SIP settings to get the username and password I need to use a SQLite tool to examine a titanium dump from the App. I'll install the FP on a root phone and get the info. I'd prefer to use a stock SIP client to the FP one.
Has anyone done anything to see the protocol uses for the SMS that FP use. They run their own SMS gateway so I assume there is a client on the phone that authenticates with the remote server to send / receive the SMS. It would be great to reverse engineer the protocol of find out what they are using. Perhaps they are using the same credentials?
At least now I can make calls on either carrier and receive calls on my Three SIM and send SMS and make calls over FP (over Wifi)

There should be no echo. Most calls (even landlines) are VOIP along some of their length. Try some of the setting in the App for echo cancellation. There are a lot. Do you get echo on Wifi it could be your Access point. I've notice on low end phone (slow CPU) they have issues on Wifi for VOIP (the technical term is jitter). Restarting your AP might improve the call quality (its to do with memory allocation taking marginally longer on the router only a ms or so the cold boot resets the memory fragmentation)

9 Oct 15#572
Really? I never had a problem with echo on Skype when using a good headset both sides, only feedback when using cheap ones. Mobiles should be good with it as well though I admit I never tried a mobile with Skype without a headset.
Well, I decided to read up on it, and it appears that echo is more noticeable on Voip due to audio delay, which explains why there is echo for her and not me, however this should be mostly fixable if I understand correctly. For example the likely cause of echo shouldn't be a huge issue on a mobile compared with a computer mic as I see it due to background noise cancellation on modern handsets along with reduced feedback between speaker and mic (assuming not on speakerphone). This should leave only a minor noticeable echo. Echo can then be reduced or eliminated by algorithms in the software which is presumably why Skype audio quality is usually so good with minimal echo when you have a good headset. So unless I have completely missed the mark, they should be able to improve upon it in their app.
Either way it isn't why I got the sim but if they really want to succeed then they will need to change something as most people do actually want to have clear phone calls.

As for data, leaving data on while out of the house for ten hours yesterday used a total of 5MB according to the web app, that included notifications being on for email, Facebook and two games that use data (though their notifications may be timed and pushed locally rather than pushed from the server) and loading up the Family Guy game for a few minutes at lunchtime. Another update. I'd avoid these people like the plague. I've used up all of my data so they seem to have disconnected my sim. No emails, no warnings. Maybe its because i've used a pre-paid card and they cannot dip into the zero funds that are in there. Customer support is woeful as if they do reply (which isn't always) you get a broken English copy/paste response telling you to phone in. A Mickey Mouse company. Avoid.
I've put a sim in my Android phone and here's what happens:
1) before installing the messaging app
- I can make an outgoing call and the caller id shows the virtual number
- I can receive a call made to the real number, but not a call made to the virtual number.
- I cannot send a text
- I cannot receive texts sent to either number
2) after installing the messaging app
- I can make an outgoing call and caller id shows the virtual number
- I can receive calls made to the real number, but I cannot receive calls made to the virtual number
- I cannot use the messaging app because it states "I used all allowed premium voice minutes for this period". It suggests I turn off Wifi (????). When I do, it doesn't change anything.
Note that I was trying all this with a sim for which I did not receive the email saying "we gave you premium voice for free this month". This seems to be reflected on "my account" app where Premium voice is not activated.
I also installed the Myaccount app (that works) and the diagnostic app, which tells me everything is hunky dory.
When I swap for another FP sim for which I received the email "one month free Premium voice" it changes... nothing.
So I'll keep one as a data sim for convenience, and cancel the rest for now. can't be bothered to fight this and will get my son another sim, either Three's 123 or ID's £5/ month.

23 Sep 15#98
so to put this in simple context....If want to make a mobile call you need to use the Internet....so if your data gone down to 0mb you can't make any call or go on Web to surf ....use data to ring or browse the Web.....so 200mb=200 minutes...0mb=0 minutes left if make a call or browse the Web your credit/debit card will be charged....yum yum.
TheTsar to peter512
23 Sep 15#102
My understanding is that you need to download their app to make calls. Exactly how it works is not 100% clear. However it is a simple matter for them to determine whether their app is being used to make calls or whether it is other data traffic. They can then subtract the minutes of voice call usage from the 200 minutes without subtracting anything from the 200MB of data. In the same way they can allow their calling app to work even if available data =0MB. How they have actually done it is another matter.
cheliuta to peter512
3 Oct 15#542
There is a Q&A section on their website and it states that data and texts/calls do no not count towards your data allowance. They are treated separately, even though the app is using data for everything. So they are correct, the allowance is 200 texts and 200 mins (and 200MB data) irrespective of how much data you have left.

Basically FreedomPop uses network Three for mobile data and then their app for voip services. Bad,very bad idea which is bound to fail eventually.

To be honest i wish i hadn't bothered with these people. Takes days for email support to reply with a copy/paste response in broken English....Facebook team respond on average every 4 days. I've tested to see what happens when i go over the data limit....well nothing since there's a 3 hour window for the data to update at their end. They can **** off if they think they can dip into my registered card as there's nothing in there or ever will be. Calls take around 15 seconds to connect, texts arrive eventually. Avoid avoid avoid.

I think that not all dual SIM phones are the same. You need one that supports data, voice and 3g / 4g on either SIM with BOTH SIMs active at the same time. Then use the andriod toggle to turn off data on the SIM card you do not want to use or set the priority. Again this depends on the Phone's hardware and software.

Same here - those "free" call/text apps are incompatible with all my devices including even the phone I am using the actual SIM in. I tried to install it before I even received the SIM to see if I could use my pending virtual number already.

What a mess.Using on my tablet for data purpose only..so far got total 600mb to use.
I tried this in an LG android 2.3.6 phone and google play said that the app isn't available in my country which is weird. The app requires android 2.3.3 or higher btw. I tried it in my huawei y550 android 4.4 phone and it works perfectly. I recommend you all download the app off google play to make sure your phone is compatible before ordering.

There are two apps available on Play Store:
- FreedomPop Messaging
- FreedomPop Free Call and Text
The Play Store says that the Messaging app only works in Android 4.0 and higher, whilst the Free Call and Text app works from 2.3.3 upward.
From what I can understand from patcho, the Free Call and Text app only works in SIM-less tablets. In any case, FreedomPop UK only recommend the FreedomPop Messaging app. That should work in your Huawei but not your LG, and that seems to be exactly what happened to you.

Interesting stuff! Google Play tells me it's incompatible with all of my devices, even my SIM-less tablet, but maybe that's because I have a poorly-made Chinese tablet whose manufacturer forgot to tell the ROM that there is no SIM slot. Interesting - but are you sure you don't have premium voice enabled? I unchecked that option including the free trial but then received an email to say it was going to be enabled anyway - effectively I had no choice.
It would be interesting to know if the SIM will work in your Lenovo tablet. Initially I thought it might be good to effectively turn my Xperia tablet into a voice-enabled "phone" but had doubts the app would consider itself compatible if your Android device isn't a phone with cellular voice capability. In such a scenario they would not be able to upsell you the premium voice option and I think their business model pretty much depends on that...

Maybe, maybe not, it's just an idea I'm throwing out there. Even if it were to work you'd still need to pay £1.99 for Premium Voice after the first month.
Maybe you could experiment for us? If the experiment fails, the option to assign/change your virtual number is always available through your online account.
Khairul
30 Sep 15#495
I've just tried the app for the first time, and what I'm about to relate is for Android devices.
Basically the app runs automically when you switch your phone on and sits quietly in the background. The app itself doesn't have a number keypad: you have to use your normal dialler to type in your outgoing number, tap the call button in your dialler, and then the FreedomPop app takes things over from there.
If data is switched off and you try to call out, a pop-up appears informing you that the call is being routed through Premium.
The only time you need to open the FreedomPop app is to send a text message, or check received ones. That's why, on Android phones, it appears in the app drawer with a simple "Messaging" moniker, and is labelled as "FreedomPop Messaging" in the Play Store.
EDIT: After setting up the FreedomPop app, you can change to another network's SIM card and still dial out using FreedomPop's number. In order to stop this from happening you need to kill the FP app using Task Manager.
Khairul
30 Sep 15#494
In my experience, yes, that's correct, there doesn't seem to be a way of using your real number to call out.
HOWEVER, there may be a way of doing it for those who haven't signed up yet. You see, when signing up, FreedomPop don't obligate you to choose a number. So maybe if you skip that step you could dial out using the real number on the SIM, if you have Premium Voice enabled. Just an idea.
Khairul
30 Sep 15#493
@binary0110
Even though we didn't sign up to Premium Voice at signup, we were all upgraded to a free trial of Premium yesterday (check your email inbox), with automatic cancellation at the end of the trial. That's why we're getting Premium features.
I actually wouldn't mind paying £1.99 per month for the Premium service so as to do away with the need for data or a smartphone app, but the trouble is, without the app, you can't receive calls on the same number as outgoing calls. They've really missed a trick there. I hope they introduce "real" number porting in from another network.
On an unrelated note, the data is not 4G enabled in my experience.

The number that works for me is the one supplied online. I tried calling it from another mobile after inserting the Freedompop SIM but before installing the app and it seemed to be ringing at the caller end but the Freedompop mobile didn't ring. I tried calling out from the Freedompop phone and it correctly called out to the other phone and connected! The call also appeared in my history online at Freedompop. I couldn't send texts, or receive them. Remember, this is BEFORE installing the app.
When I installed the app (which is NOT the same one as the link from their site - which I guess is for the US market) it recognized my SIM and offered me access to my account details. Now I could make and receive calls, and send texts.
So I suspect with the "premium voice" option you will be able to make outgoing calls without the app, and therefore possibly on non Android / iOS phones. But you won't be able to receive calls - I suspect the app pings and registers on Freedompop's backend infrastructure that must route to the one device you have your sim inserted at that time. And you can't send texts without the app, or receive them.
It seems this is a data only sim for which they can enable voice carrier on the outbound. Everything else must go over their data infrastructure - Three as carrier and Freedompop with a backend that makes direct API calls to some miscellaneous SMS provider. The acid test would be to try making an outgoing call before installing the App and without the "premium voice" enabled... that should fail without premium voice.
binary0110 to senecan
30 Sep 15#490
I've just tried this. I signed up without the premium voice enabled and haven't installed the app. I successfully made a call to another mobile. The caller ID was the "virtual" number. I also successfully made a call to the FreedomPop SIM using the "real" number (on the SIM card). The online account system shows the call I made and lists it as "Premium" with a total charge of £0.00. This is despite me not installing the app or enabling the Premium Voice option for £1.99 per month. I have also disabled automatic top-up. I also did a second test call from the FreedomPop SIM disabling WiFi and 4G and it went through fine. Text messaging, however, doesn't work (either receiving or sending).
I got the SIM for a Lenovo tablet. I haven't yet decided if I'm going to keep it. If the voice calls still continue to work through the phone's own dialler after a month then I think not having the ability to text isn't a massive problem. But if phone calls no longer work then I might switch to Three's PAYG 321 tariff.
Donuts123
30 Sep 15#489
I received my SIM today. It only works in a 3G/4G phone. No roaming onto 2G networks, so coverage in the country could be pretty dire.
Even with mobile data disabled I can make and receive calls. However, to receive a call the caller has to call the mobile number printed on the SIM. But when making a call, the caller ID at the other end shows your mobile number given when ordering the SIM. So if the person you call sees a missed call, they'll probably try and call you back on the "wrong" number.
You can't send or receive normal text messages. Presumably you have to install the FreedomPop Messaging app and enable mobile data for that.

Khairul to Olio
30 Sep 151#480
Right, with FreedomPop, you get two mobile phone numbers: a real one and a virtual one.
The virtual number is the one you pick online when you sign up, and that's the one you use for all outgoing calls (whether via the app, or via the standard dialer if you have Premium Voice). As for incoming calls, you would only receive calls to your virtual number if your app is active.
Your real number is the one assigned to the SIM card by Three and is printed on the SIM itself. Incoming calls to this number come through regardless of whether you use the app or not.
I can confirm that, if you have Premium Voice, your normal dialer will work. I don't even have the app!

Sorry, restricting the quoted text to those points I am replying to only.
1. They clearly said this in advance, yes it is **** as if you are getting a free trial of any option you will not get the full benefit before being charged, but for those of us who have chosen none of the premium features the only difference is the first months allowance will be for less than a month, meaning it is not as accurate measure that the free allowance would be enough.
2. If you have been charged an incorrect amount and have had nothing from them, reverse the charge with your card company. As soon as you tell them they have taken the wrong amount the card company will do a chargeback and refund you. Then it is up to FreedomPop to resolve the issue and to contact you.

So I'm not into the general paranoia ("they might charge my card", "they will do an Ovivo and go bust") but there are a couple alarm bells just now:
- ordered 8 days ago and sim still not arrived
- status is order dispatched 15 hours ago but according to my account details I'm 22 days from next billing cycle (so they've started the billing cycle regardless of whether they even dispatched yet)
- tracking link goes to a fedex.com link with "tracknumber_list=Not Available" and a "cntry_code=us" - so there's obviously nothing to identify any specific order
- right enough, I get nonsense tracking information
- the link to "contact us" on their website goes to 404 - that's computer speak for "you cannot contact us"
- I got charged an additional £0.86 despite not receiving the sim yet for "international option"; can't work out why since I cannot "contact us"
- when I pop up the google play page for the calls/text android app it appears "this app isn't compatible with any of your devices" - that includes a Galaxy S3, LG G3 and a recent Sony smartphone
- got an email confirming I'd get a complimentary month of "premium voice" despite specifically deselecting that option. I want to know if this is a viable future spare sim for free, not an artificial "it works for now"
Not feeling a great deal of optimism just now... they could at least link "contact us" to The Samaritans or something...

No. The whole point of a smartphone is to be able to use the smart features when you need to - it is not mandatory to have it primed and waiting constantly.
The smart way of using a smartphone is to have data turn on only when you are browsing t'internet, or polling email - not having it on 24/7 draining battery and guzzling data allowance.
Also, data availability is a subset of call connection availability - meaning the patchy 3 reception for calls will become even patchier when you need not only call but data reception too.

I've been reading the FreedomPop forums as I was on the verge of signing up but for me the big stumbling block is that apparently you are "charged for all data used on WIFI at home" - don't know how accurate this is as no FreedomPop moderator has either confirmed or denied this - but you can check this out at the below link.
The incorrect assumption by that one user is reasonably explained in the current final post of that thread as the immediately preceding unreported cellular data being incorrectly interpreted as being wifi data.

My experience so far is that the data is PAINFULLY slow and the phone/text app doesn't work as it can't see the sim card. If i could get a refund i would. As i've said before i've changed my bank details on the site to a pre-paid card that never has any funds in and can't be overdrawn.

If you were talking about the situation up to approximately two years ago, I would have agreed. Since June 2013 a phone call to your bank will do. So simply ask your bank or credit card provider to cancel it and they will have to do it for you.
Read this http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/recurring-payments
How do I cancel a continuous payment authority? You have a LEGAL RIGHT to have payments cancelled. Even if companies refuse, banks MUST cancel them for you.
In June 2013, the Financial Conduct Authority reiterated banks MUST cancel a continuous payment authority when asked. It also added that if further payments are taken in error after a customer asks for a cancellation, the bank must refund them.
Kenneth131
28 Sep 15#423
you can't cancel the direct debit as there isn't one. it's a recurring transaction. a direct debit allows the company to request the funds from your bank with the protection of the direct debit guarantee.
a recurring transaction the payment is processed on your card number with no instruction to cancel. if you cancel your card the payment is legally allowed to go through on the canceled card where a continuous payment authority has been given to the company and the new card details have not been provided. you cannot stop it yourself the bank must fill in a form to block the company in question. yes it's possible but if the amount or expected payment date changes to that out with the blocking parameters then the payment can still go through. you will get a refund but its not as quick as same day indemnities with a direct debit.
it's a shady practice of taking payments used by loan companies and fraudsters look up online raspberry ketones misleading sales. they legally did not carry out fraud.
people paid £1.99 postage and packing however in the small print it was stipulated that unless cancelled with the company they would continue your subscription with a monthly fee of £79.99 for one box of tablets. people were oblivious and I saw loads of people hit with the charge. we would block the company and pass the case to fraud investigation since the only contact number for the company was in the US and never answered.
I'm not saying this company is as shady as these cowboys but I bet cancellation will not be easy and if your phone is stollen / misused then how quick wil they be to rectify it or will they just debit your card as per the authority you have provided to them indefinitely.
time will tell but I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig to try
pantaiema
28 Sep 15#422
Utter tosh. You are talking about the recurrent payment problem in the past. Since two years ago, the bank is required to act on your instruction to cancel any payment you want or they will to pay it for you if after being asked there was still a payment coming out from your account.

That he did... But something seems to be sucking Data regardless! In two days he is down to 175MB! The 200MB will never last him the month and he has not even used it!
This seems like a well dodgy company! My son was using the 321 Tariff on Three prior to this and would make a £10 topup last a few months! This looks like it will be depleted by the end of the week!

OH DEAR,
Well I decided to cancel my order prior to despatch of the Sim
It went like this, I rang +4411 3887 0823 it's a Leeds number but you are put through to a USA call centre. press one for support two for sales.
Two for Sales then:
I speak to a guy called Reggie, explain that I wish to cancel my order, they ask you why, I give reasons, but explain it is my consumer right to cancel.
So Reggie asks for my Freedom Pop number...given
Then my email address........given
then my name......given
THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN REGGIE CANNOT HEAR ME..............and as you can see I'm shouting
I got about eight, hello I cannot hear you replies and then a ......please call back later request from Reggie [he stated his name] It wasn't recorded, it was real time.
Funny thing is I then got a two question customer satisfaction survey.........both questions answered :disappointed:
So I try again, this time I get Chris [female] after explaining I had tried minutes earlier to cancel my order, we went through same question regime and guess what after I say my name..............
So I fire up HDUK, and start to write this post....break off, ring Freedom Pop back
I'm speaking to a female called Zerlin, well I asked her to spell it out because she had a Latino accent I was struggling with in regard to her name, but I'm sure it was Zerlin
Anyway I brought her up to speed re my two earlier conversations, and the fact I was in the process of writing a review of my cancellation experience on HDUK, and that I was not a happy bunny. So we can do this the easy way or the hard way, her choice..............
Suprise, suprise, Zerlin took all the same information off me and informed me the order had been cancelled. then went through the script, 24 to 48 hours to show on my account as cancelled, 5 days for the card refund to show on my card account. I asked her to confirm said cancellation via my email address they held on file, and at that precise moment in time I got the....hello I cannot hear you carry on .............I closed the call
That said, I have received an email subject line. Your FreedomPop Account Has Been Cancelled
Now take from my experience what you will

I ordered with a disposable email address using a prepaid credit card which is registered to an old address and I am still uncomfortable with this deal! I'm sure some people will manage extract good value, but the combination of VOIP only service, continuous card payments, 100mb cut-off, probable speed throttling and paucity of information has raised enough red flags for me to cancel.
nige182
28 Sep 15#407
Taken from Wikipedia - "Originally a valid SIM card was not required to make a 999/112 emergency call in the UK. However, as a result of high numbers of untraceable hoax calls being made, this feature is now blocked by all UK networks. Most UK mobile telephone handsets will dial 999/112 without a SIM inserted (or with a locked/invalid SIM), but the call will not be connected. Following the blocking of SIM-less calls, in 2009 the UK networks introduced emergency call roaming. This allows a user with a valid SIM of a UK network to make emergency calls on any network for which they have coverage."
So I think the only way to know if that would automatically go through the standard network rather than VOIP through data would be to contact FreedomPop and ask them.

The transaction was sufficiently dissimilar to your normal spending pattern. "Getting a clue" is simply familiarising yourself with the automated loss-limitation procedures utilised by lenders, where typically a small transaction is attempted as a prequel to something more significant. The card issuer has nothing against you, it is simply being cautious for its own, and the customer's, benefit.

If you need to make a proper emergency call, ie 999, will this rely on the data type calls or use the proper mobile network? Because, as far as I'm aware, you can make 999 calls from any mobile even if you don't have a sim installed?

Yes I reckon that will be OK then. Any sim I had a problem with - eg I could not call Delight or Vectone from VOIP or The Peoples Operator - also came up as 20p per minute on that site.
nige182
27 Sep 15#400
On that site it comes up as "UK Mobile Hutchison 3G (MM)" and 10 pence per minute, so I guess they are standard Three mobile numbers then.
gwapenut
27 Sep 15#399
It's entirely possible. You can find out if they're in the "premium" mobile bucket like Vectone, Delight etc by entering the number here and getting the call prices. http://www.voipfone.co.uk/prices_new.php
Note that "normal" numbers such as vodafone, giffgaff, orange, etc are charged at 10p/min.
For "premium" mobiles such as Vectone, Delight, Lebara, they are charged at 20p/min - and worse still, cannot actually be called by some operators - as an example, TPO wouldn't let me call a delight number.
Historically such numbers weren't included in inclusive minutes by tmobile, but that was company politics - Idon't think this is the case any more.
nige182
27 Sep 15#398
Difficult to say if it is worth it, I am giving it a try for data only in a tablet. Some people have said the signal is crap though and others have said the call quality terrible. I think it is far from as good as it first sounds, but if you mostly want the data it might be worth getting in early and trying it in case they put the price up later.
One thing I haven't seen touched on though, these numbers that they give us are 'UK mobile' numbers, but the sequence of the area code part of the number looks different to other networks, or at least those I have seen. Is there any risk that they may actually be deemed as premium numbers rather than UK mobile numbers by another network and therefore those calling you on the FreedomPop number from a different network may be charged extremely high call charges?

FreedomPop is the network. If you are asking which networks signal they use, then they piggyback off the Three network.
Then you have failed to follow the steps mentioned in the post and various comments. Select the free option rather than the free trial, if you see any offers, skip them as they are premium, untick all boxes. Total charges will be £5 for the sim plus £1.99 delivery, the message at the final checkout is something along the lines that you authorise them to take a monthly charge of £0.

It's basically a VOIP service with a UK mobile number. People call you or you call them through that number and it goes through the app on your mobile and they won't know that any difference. The minutes will come out of your allowance. Can't see why you can't make calls within your allowance over wifi whilst abroad.

So, this is just like a Skype service, which itself is usually free? What is the benefit of this, then? This FreedomPop thing definitely won't be replacing a normal mobile service.
VoIP only really works on fast data connections...whereas 2G standard voice calls will work even with just 1 bar of reception...
Basically, unless you pay the £1.99 to have a normal service with them, just don't bank on being able to make voice calls etc in low reception areas. Also, if (like me) you switch off your data connection to conserve battery life, you will kill the entire FreedomPop service.
Thanks for posting though - it has ensured that I won't be investing myself! I am personally happy to just bounce around services such as iD mobiles 250 mins/unlimited texts/1GB data for £7.50 per month - with £21 of Quidco cashback...

I have one of those EE sims with 100MB free data per month for life. I put that in my tablet a while ago and three weeks ago started using it more (probably more than I should, but still I do have wifi most places) for apps only, including games, not downloading and not browsing but receiving notifications on Facebook/Gmail/etc and playing a couple of games that need data.
Anyway, reason for this post. I checked usage using the My EE app and I have 7MB remaining of my 100MB this month on the sim and it renews in 15 days. So basically 200MB a month would actually do me nicely. Only problem is if they actually do restrict service after 100MB, but then I can combine it with the EE sim I have so still alright. If you don't really use a lot of data, eg. you only have it for notifications and Whatsapp, and don't actually open the apps whilst not on Wifi, this will probably be more than enough.
Olio
25 Sep 15#335
Well, this confirms a first benefit: For £6.99 you get 200 MB every month "for life" no questions asked.
If the £1.99 removes the need for the app, then I'll happily pay it, considering you then get a nice little package of mins / texts and data.
Also note that for the free plans, if you go over your 200 mb, the cost is still only 1.5p/mb
The absolute cheapest (for comparable costs / non-contracts) would be Three's 123, at 1p/mb, and all other PAYG are far far behind these.
So I'm still happy I got several cards for different uses in the family.

This is pretty much the worst sim card to have in an emergency! It relies on a data connection....
Better to just get a GiffGaff sim card and stick some credit on it. If you sign up via a referral link, you get an additional £5 credit.
GiffGaff runs on the O2 network - which has fantastic 2G coverage (not necessarily the best for a data connection - but then again, that isn't what you are needing when making an emergency call).

My conclusion is this service is worthless as you as can't give this number to someone being -
Data is not always available in HSPA; having an application waking up the phone in real time to check for an incoming call will kill the battery. This will fail you when you most need it.
Can't use it in a non Android/iOS phone (Whatsapp/Skype doing the job brilliantly for that)
Though I have ordered 2 however I see it only to be use as a backup in home to make calls when out of contract minutes.
Pay £1.99 per month and you will get access to cellular network voice.
MrSmudge to Palwan
25 Sep 15#330
If it's worth £14 to you as a backup phone then it's not worthless is it?
I've been looking for a pay as you go where the minutes/data don't expire for ages, this is perfect for me to keep an emergency phone in the car, also to use that phone as a dash/personal cam that automatically uploads low quality footage to Dropbox. If we can get cellular minutes for £1.99/month then even better. That's how they plan to make a profit and keep the business going , hoping that some customers will use the paid for services.

24 Sep 15#304
The flagging up could just be because it is a new mobile phone company. Sounds odd, I know, but when someone got a hold of my card details a couple years ago and went on a worldwide spending spree, on me, the first transaction they apparently did was phone credit. The bank said that is almost always the first thing they try, to test the card, and so they are suspicious of phone company transactions. Anyway, if mine was flagged yesterday, and didn't work for that reason, it works today.
chloe07
24 Sep 15#303
Well it was flagged up for a reason and i hadn't used my card since the weekend and their system flagged this specific place up. The fact that they share all your details is enough for me to think its dodgy.

Does anyone know exactly what the Premium Voice add-on does?
It states:
Increase call reliability when data network is weak or unavailable. Seamlessly switch between FreedomPop voice and cellular voice.
Get the peace of mind of a large wireless carrier for a fraction of the price.
Compatible with all Android and iOS devices
To me that means simply use the normal voice netwrok, not data.
That is "only" £1.99 / month
If people are not happy with simply data, that might be a solution. For many light users, 200 min / 200 texts, 200 MB for £1.99 / month is an attractive proposition!
For reference, when Free (the French telephone operator) first arrive on the mobile market, it offered really good deals. It currently offers for 2€ a month: 120 minutes, unlimited text / MMS, 50 Mo data.
I don't think FP are that far from it (if the £1.99 add-on does what I think it does). And they are a MVNO.

You don't have to look far on UKHD to find good alternatives. Remember 'free' is not a sustainable business model if you are costing them money.

Anybody seen any mention of UK (not US) number porting in / out options? Thanks.
I think I'd rather stick with payg VOIP at 1p per minute. It has the benefit that it can be used not just ona mobile phone, but on a tablet without a sim, or a normal laptop.
I've tried using payg VOIP over Wifi from my mobile and call quality is significantly poorer than when using it on my laptop, or getting them to do a VOIP callback to my mobile. Might just be my mobile not handling voice over wifi so well, but be warned - it could affect FreedomPop users too if their mobiles are similar.
Now I tend to use it in callback mode which charges me for two calls at 1p per minute, but gives good quality. Wouldn't have that option with freedom pop, assuming the underlying technology is similar.

Doesn't sound right - Freedom (initially) then Pop (go bust?)
When I had an Ovivo Sim I barely touched the free minutes, I used perhaps 50 a month, and I know there's many others who will use much less. If u look at a competitors 321 tariff, 3p per minute for calls, at 50 minutes that would equate to £1.50 per month. The £6.99 Freedompop are asking, that's four months worth of calls - and who knows what will change in that time. Yes I know that u get 200mb data but that really is a tiny amount.
So it may not be exactly as good as It seems to be.
Also it's worth bearing in mind when you tell your friends about this, they may forget to un tick that box. FreedomPop know this and will make a lot of money this way.

150 Mb free is only after a topup. So if you don't topup at least once a month, you don't get it.
Also note that, with this FreedomPop, there is one advantage : Because it's based on Wifi, you can call and text any number in the UK from abroad at no additional charge. Same for receiving calls.
Granted you need wifi or expensive 3G, or 3G enabled on the phoen via a dual sim system.
If, like me, you intend to use this mostly for internet (in iPad / dongle / car / as second sim), it should not make a big difference whether it's voice + data, or data only.

Like true (UMA) WiFi Calling the phone must be in receipt of the sim card for security of your account.
Old Blackberry UMA chips needed the sim card present, where as WiFi apps just need set up once with no additional security checks. Apple seem to have baked such into the latest iOS/models but without the UMA chip which gives superior call quality over WiFi than a app or OS integration (WiFi dependant of course, you could get poor OS, app or chip results with low upload bandwidth or lack of QOS)

I noticed the time zone setting for the account does not support UK time. It is set to GMT which is not the same as the time in the UK for half the year (summer) also I cannot see the option to cancel the voicemail as outlined in the use guide. I think they are not ready to release a service. There will be bumps in the road. They are used to the monolithic US market with hardly any competition the UK market thankfully is a more diverse (handset hardware) and more competitive market.
I've used the Liberty mobile service in the US and that can switch from Wifi to cellular voice circuits during a call. Its all seamless there is no dropout. Even on normal calls on cell phones you may be switched between cell towers several times during a call.
If anyone manages to follow these instructions and gets the option to turn off VM please post how you got it to work. I've not got my SIM yet so will wait.
Also I installed the APP before getting my SIM, so I have to uninstalled and use the SIM before I reinstall the app according to the FAQ.

Not sure if anyone noticed. It will not take prepaid credit card but actual one. I skimmed through the T&C and if you go over your tariff, you will be charged the amount you overused and thus it will be taken from your credit card. If yours is not active, you will need to pay before the service become live again.
Anyway, good when you are in control of what you use. With Three network, you must have a phone with 3g or above to use their network.

I would be wary of this company. If it looks too good to be true it usually is.
They are a legitimate company who have traded in the US for a while now however when you sign up you are giving them permission to debit your payment card.
this is not a direct debit and you cannot carry out an indemnity as such should they bill your card at any time in the future, nor can you cancel their ability to take funds with your bank as there is no instruction issued to your bank.
what you are agreeing to is as good as signing a contract to allow them access to your payment card at any time for any amount.
I am not advocating that they are as crooked as the scam artists I'm about to mention but its the same payment trick they use;
you may remember adverts online for raspberry keetone tablets for £1.99 P&P only. buyers suddenly found they were charged £70.00 the following month. it stated in the terms and conditions that unless cancelled with them before the end of the first month, the supply would continue. they also used the same billing method and lots of people only then found that their card issuer had no ability to cancel or change back the payment as you signed the rights to the company to allow them to charge your card directly.
I really hate this type of payment as it strips you of the direct debit guarantee and protect you as a consumer
NIgelK to Kenneth131
23 Sep 152#226
perhaps you should read up on continuous authority payments using your bank card, which is what you're giving freedompop authority to do. You can cancel them with your card issuer.
so, basically, you need data on all the time (battery zapper), maybe wifi too (goodbye battery), you sign up for payment to be taken at any time (erm no thanks) and you share your details with tom dick & harry (no thanks again)
If any of the comments are not true then I might take another look at this, with one eye

The comments are justified when you have to sign your card information to a company authorising them to debit your card in the future before you even get the sim card to try the service. it can be very difficult to cancel a continuous payment authority once in place most banks don't know how to or only have the ability to reject payments from a merchant between a certain set of values. if the value changes it could still be processed.

Coupled with needing a data connection to make and receive calls, having to use their app, and sharing of my data! its not for me. Giving this a miss!

The company was meant to start operating in UK back in June, but due to problems it was put back.
Initially signed up for offer of free sims and registered interest, but after reading reviews and looking a bit more into the company I decide to pass their offer.
It was aimed at basic light users of smart phones.
Reading the reviews of the service it is a bit hit and miss.
Hopefully they will stick to their word and offer a good reliable service.
Good luck to you that

prefer this deal at 99p month and can top up sim card with call/txt/data credit as needed and no contract
Good luck to all those who believe they are getting something for nothing, seriously, i'm half tempted myself... but apart from the impracticalities of relaying soley on a data connection (rebranded 3 product) for all of my mobile services something just doesn't seem right, their website looks like it was knocked up in frontpage by a 5 year old which usually is a bad sign and kinda fishy seeing that the internet is the thing at the very core of their business.

also as stated above
Note that data usage reporting may be delayed by up to three hours. Our system suspends activity if you are within 100MB of your monthly data allotment and your account has a credit balance of less than £2.
so it seems the free 200mb of data will actually only give you 100mb before suspending you unless you have auto topup on or more than £2 credit balance.
the delay in data reporting also means that you will likely go over your allowance before they alert you or they will preemptively auto top up your phone if you have this enabled well before you exceed your limit
seems like they have a way to always extract money from you by blaming their laggy billing system

Not sure if anyone has seen this regarding downgrading from the free trial of premium 1gb to the fee plan but it seems that the free plan only supports 4g.
How do I downgrade?
We are sorry to hear that you would like to downgrade your data plan. We do want to let you know that if you're currently on a 3G/4G plan, downgrading to our free plan will cause you to lose the ability to access the 3G network. If you would still like to downgrade to our Free monthly data plan on the 4G network, please follow this link.

If you approach or go over your free data, what happens?
If you go over your monthly data amount, your credit card on file will be charged a small amount so that you may continue using your FreedomPop service without interruption. The overage rate is as follows:
FreedomPop uses Automatic Top-up to ensure you are never left without internet access when you exceed your monthly data allotment. The default top-up amount is £10.00. You can turn off this feature at any time. In any month your usage is within 100mb of your monthly plan capacity limit, or in which your account balance falls below £2.00, your account will be charged the automatic top up amount using the primary payment method on your account.
When you disable the Automatic Top-Up feature your account will be suspended when you reach the top-up threshold. However, if you exceed your free data allotment in a single session, your account may switch to pay-as-you-go mode.
Note that data usage reporting may be delayed by up to three hours. Our system suspends activity if you are within 100MB of your monthly data allotment and your account has a credit balance of less than £2.
Additionally, you can select FreedomPop Usage Alerts from our Services page to receive alerts when you are approaching the end of your allotment of free data.
How do I contact customer support?
Simply type your question in the search box to get instant answers.
Tips: For better results, type more than one word and use a question phrasing.
If you don't find a match try phrasing your question differently.
If you can't find what you're looking for you can email us at [email protected] or call +44 11 3887 0823 Monday-Friday 9am-5pm GMT.

FreedomPop International (Global) Calling allows users the ability to call over 50 countries using their Freedom Phone or Free Talk and Text app. Like everything FreedomPop, we offer a basic Global plan with 100 FREE global minutes.
What phones support International (Global) Calling?
All Phones using the FreedomPop Messaging or FreedomPop Free Talk and Text app will be supported.
Our users who are SOLELY utilizing FreedomPop's Free Talk and Text App, without a credit card on file, will not be able to sign up for services. Instead, you will need to create another account, and update your billing information, in order to utilize our International Calling service.
What is Data Rollover?
Data Rollover allows you to rollover unused data up to 500MBs every month (up to 20GBs). You will be able to share your rollover data with friends, and roll over any unused 500MBs on any plan. Unused data will continue to accumulate every month thereafter until the service is cancelled.
For example, if you were on a 1GB data plan:
April -- 1GB total data in your account. If you use 250MB, you can rollover 500MB
May -- 1.5GB total data in account (1GB data plan, 500MB rollover) -- If you use 400MB, you will rollover 500MB
June -- 2GB total data in account (1GB data plan, 1GB rollover) -- If you use 500MB, you will rollover 500MB
etc....
Data Rollover is billed at £1.49/month.
Can I make calls over WiFi?
Yes, in fact WiFi typically provides better call quality. However, the minutes will still be deducted from the voice/ text plan.
How do I access my voicemail?
Visual Voicemail is voicemail with a visual interface.
You can access voicemail using the visual voicemail functionality. The phone comes with the visual voicemail app installed and you can activate the service via the app for £0.99/month.
Android users will need to download the FreedomPop Voicemail app in the Google Play store. For iOS users, the feature is built into the app.
How do I disable voicemail?
If you are not signed up for Visual Voicemail, you will still be notified when a voicemail ends up in your inbox. If you wish to download and play these voicemails, you will need to add Visual Voicemail service at £0.99/mo. If you do not wish to receive these notifications, you can manage these settings on your FreedomPop account (it is enabled by default).
To disable the Voicemail prompt and storage of messages, log into your FreedomPop account and navigate to My Account >> Account settings >> Voicemail Preferences.
Tap "Edit" to change the voicemail status to "Disabled."

Following adambanana403's tip, I'm going to paste below FreedomPop's help and support for their UK customers. Thanks to him for the advice. The information below provides some useful insight into things. There's a customer service number as well.
What is FreedomPop?
Hello UK! FreedomPop is the nation's first wireless Internet provider committed to delivering 100% FREE 4G mobile Internet service. Since 2012, our mission has been to deliver free and fast mobile services to all from our home in Los Angeles.
We offer GSM SIM cards that allow access to free voice, text, and data with your current 4G and 3G phones, and plan on rolling out ultra-fast, 4G LTE coverage by late October!
Trouble Making & Receiving Calls or Texts
If you are having issues making or receiving calls or texts, there are a few steps that you can take to resolve the issue.
1) Make sure you have WiFi or have data enabled (you should be receiving a connection to HSPA or HSPA+). Please ensure that airplane mode is disabled and you have a network connection. If you are not receiving a network connection, you may want to try to toggle on/off airplane mode.
2) For Android phones, please make sure you have the most up-to-date version of the FreedomPop Messaging app by checking in the Google Play Store. If you have an iOS device, you will need to make sure that you have the most up-to-date version of the FreedomPop Free Voice and Text app.
You will need to have the SIM installed and activated before downloading our applications. If you accidentally installed the app before activating you SIM card, please uninstall the app. Insert the SIM card again, and wait for it to receive a signal before attempting to install our app.
3) We also highly recommend downloading the FreedomPop Diagnostic app in the Google Play store. The app is custom-designed to help diagnose software-related issues affecting your Freedom Phone. It will help guide you through many of the steps listed in this article as well. The app is currently only available for the Android platform.
4) If you have recently ported, changed your number, or made any other recent account changes, it's usually a good idea to refresh the FreedomPop Messaging app. Open the Messaging app, and tap "Messaging" in the top left-hand corner. Tap "Sync Account Data." This will re-sync the app with your FreedomPop account.
Can I transfer my current phone number?
We currently do not support transferring (port-in) existing phone numbers to our service for UK users.
How do I make calls and texts?
Please make sure you have the correct FreedomPop apps installed in order to receive calls and texts. You can download the latest version of the FreedomPop Messaging app in the Google Play store. For iOS users, please make sure you are using the latest version of the FreedomPop Free Voice and Text app in the Apple App store.
For the best user experience, we recommend solely using our apps for making calls and sending text messages.
NOTE: iOS users will not be able to make calls using the iPhone's native dialer. We recommend hiding the app in a folder and using our app to place calls.

I'm concluding the sensible strategy is to wait until some of the already ordered SIMs have arrived and found to be working as expected or not. Of course waiting might mean a further increased setup fee. But at least you will have a better idea of what you will be buying.
Its all a bit pig in a poke atm.

As I have already said, the link on the UK site is to the US support page. The actual UK support is available on support.freedompop.com/UK , but only works if you use the search bar to 'browse'.
Using this page I have found that the app is probably not needed, even though they want you to use it: I have also found that porting your current number in is not possible yet: I hope this helps some people :man:

Khairul
23 Sep 151#186
Guys, I think there is a need to calm down.
There is an indication on the homepage that you will need an app:
However, the FreedomPop UK site is a very shoddy port of their US website. There are many things that have simply been transferred verbatim over the Atlantic, especially the support pages. Things are mentioned in dollars. The terms of use page also cites United States law quite a lot.
It's very possible that information has not been properly rewritten for the UK market and therefore maybe an app won't be required. Indeed, if you have a look at FreedomPop's app page at the Play Store, the changelog doesn't state that the app has been updated for UK users. It's all US-centric.
So I don't think we can be sure how everything works just yet. We need to find out properly first.

its a voip service that uses data (wifi or 3g), not a cellular network unless . you have to use their dialler app which will probably use advertising and kill your data, the app like the 3 app needs to be reactivated constantly if you dont have a data connection which will soon kill any data cap on 3g. as has been pointed out a completely different product to what ovivo was!
the app iteself all will not work unless wifi or 3g is enabled - clearly states that in the t&c. they do have a 2g signal but 3g or wifi have to be switched on at all times and only then will it work with the app. youll kill you 3g data so quick you wont know even know its happened under the free 200 min plan!!!!
uklemons
23 Sep 152#164
Having been suckered in for 6.99 then read the terms and conditions (once you could) this a voip service with data having to be on if not close to a wifi spot. You have to use what is effectively a customised version of the three wifi application - you cannot use the standard dialler - none of which you can find out until having paid.
I have looked for a phone number or email/contact box on the site to be able to cancel but cannot find anything.
Has anyone got a way of contacting these con artists so that I can cancel under distance selling regulations?
Yeah this needs to be mentioned in the description as it really isn't that similar to Ovivo!

I tried to buy a sim and i got an error at checkout. Tried another card and it worked fine. Bit peed off that it was 1p activation last week and £5 now. Some of the terms seem a bit vague and at times contradictory. Am still none the wiser what happens once you go over the data allowance as i've read one thing and been told another. Still, i've added a card to my account that never has money in and can't be overdrawn so they can't auto-top me up when they choose.

Well I have ordered the sim for £6.99. It states no additional monthly ongoing fees. Will try it in my second sim slot of my mobile phone and see if it works - assuming it ever arrives.
I signed up for 2 pre-pay credit cards linked on this site a month ago and neither of these arrived either - so maybe this is not legit. However why give us a nice account login and the choice of mobile numbers if this is not legit?

My guess, and this is only a guess, is that you get 200MB of roaming data total. The 200 minutes of calls do come out of your data if you are out and about, but if you are at home on Wifi then they still count as minutes, but not out of the data as well. Basically I am viewing this as two services. One is the app, similar to Skype with 200 minutes of included calls. The other is the sim with 200MB free data, if you are connected to Wifi and make a call, the minutes are used but do not impact data. If you are not on Wifi then they impact the data as well, probably not on a 1min=1MB rate either, since voice calls should use less than 1MB per minute, eg. for Skype "Calls to mobile numbers or landlines: 6-20 kbps or around 150KB for one minute of calling" (source) and this should be comparable.

23 Sep 15#109
The app is only available on IOS or Android, but when you choose your sim card size it lists Lumia windows phones, so it must use Threes network in the normal way for these to work. I think they may route calls and texts over wi-fi if available though.

23 Sep 155#101
Exactly. Ovivo received a bad rep from the newer customers that joined just prior to the company going under but the majority of customers had well had their money's worth by that time. Very few (if any) people actually lost out as they claimed their money back from their credit card/paypal accounts. Some unscrupulous people still claimed their money back even way after they'd had their money's worth which was a bit snide as far as I'm concerned. I only joined at the end of October and they went under the following March so had about 5 months service out of my £20 and wouldn't have even considered the idea of making a claim.

I really wish what you said is whats going to happen. However, I've read different and thought that the FreedomPop Messaging App will replace your native dialer and be used to make/receive calls and texts.
But, if you think about it, if we do need the FreedomPop Messaging App to make/receive calls and texts then why will we need the sim card?
Thanks

23 Sep 151#97
Hang on then, so you will always have to have mobile data on
lol, isn't this pretty dreadful then? If mobile data has to be on all the time just so you can receive texts/calls then that 200mb will go in a heartbeat! That can't be right can it?
Dazza_DCFC
23 Sep 15#96
That's not the way I've read it. It will work as normal on your day to day phone, all you have to do is insert the sim card and away you go.
However, if you want to use your calls and texts on another phone/device you can download an app, login with you freedompop account, and use those calls as VOIP calls.Similar to what virgin do with their landline phone service where they allow you to download the virgin app so you can use your phone to make landline calls that come out of your landline allowance.

23 Sep 15#93
You can on skype and viber too but they charge for it! So its not different at all! And as nearly everyone has whatsapp anyway why would you wanna call additional numbers apart from landlines at 8.99 a month i pay less for 600MB and have 300 mins and unlimited texts
Like i said only worth it for the free 200mb and you would have to install a cellular counter to make sure you don't go over unless you wanna pay 99p for their data counter alert

23 Sep 15#91
I am not quite sure what to make of it then. I thought it seemed a great deal. I understood you had to use their app, to dial out, but I thought that was just a mechanism. Does it then mean you can't receive or make calls unless you are connected to the internet? Surely that can't be right. As then it is just like WhatsApp, rather than a mobile provider/phone package.

This is not such a good deal as what it seems 1GB for £8.99 Mobidata who also use three charge £4.97
and the 200 mins is not traditional calls so its no more than whatsapp or viber calling and using your data allowance!
The only good thing would be your free 200MB allowance but in the usa they throttle users who don't pay and you can pay extra for priority! They share your data so use another email and they have continuos card authority!
And you have to pay for alerts so in other words unless you reset the counter on your ipad you could use 400mb and find £4 coming from your account! Maybe on a day you have no money in there causing bank fees to be charged!
It's one of those deals where its free if your careful but basically they make money by charging more than what what you would have paid via say Mobidata or another operator. You can get 1GB from mobidata and use viber and whatsapp for however many calls you get.
If i remember right viber is no where near as clear as traditional voice calls! And if they throttle non paying people then the internet calls they offer will be useless unless they guarantee bandwidth!
I'm not going to buy just yet even filled out credit details but think i'll just wait!
Anyone received one of these yet??

2) few people ever expected p4u to cease trading, but many p4u customers lost significant redemption amounts - inc HUKD members.
Not suggesting any company is about to cease trading, just attempting to point out that redemption deals have significant risks. (Also not suggesting FreedomPop is a redemption deal).

Thanks - that's really helpful. I'm actually running Android 5.1 - do you happen to know if I will be able to disable to relevant permissions for the Freedompop app so that I can use it alongside my existing SIM?
You can buy data bundle; 2GB - £15, 5GB - £20, 10GB - £25
But for those who need just small data amounts , Three is offering 200MB for FREE each month with added benefit of using it in "Feel at home" countries, plus all benefits of GSM network, plus calls and txts for 3p and 2p...plus no smartphone needed which is good for older persons or to keep as a backup phone...
I have never been able to make calls over wifi (i.e. when I don't have a 3G connection), so was wondering if this was just a normal limitation of the free plan.
After that- just email that they didn't heard within 48 hours and case is closed(even I have sent 5 emails this timed clearly told them problem is not solved)
Check this video out. Not sorted until now

You regret it later!!!
So is it possible to take my current number with me? Also what's this VOIP please?
Actually I'd prefer if it would over take the dialler as I don't like having to copy the number into the FP app.
Calls are so so sometimes but for free you can't complain.
Thats worrying...and thats why I never give my credit card details for such companies...
I've a dual SIM phone and use FP for data and SMS.
SMS works well but call suck.
No way ready as my only provided (Sticking to Three PAYG 321) but fine for free
CS try and help but their systems are crap. I had one SIM barf (out of allowances since Feb?!)
But have 4 free SIMs in spare phones love the SMS using WiFi
So all together 1100MB a month for free.
I don't care about calls, as they are rubbish big way, unusable I would say, but data is perfect and 1GB for free is amazing deal from them....
Highly recommend Life Mobile's £5.95 deal via uSwitch, though. Great deal for those who have low usage, those who are skint, or both.
Yep, I've never seen a company charge for porting numbers in to a network. Such a strange barrier to put in place as it stops people from wanting to transfer in their main/only number.
But still I never ever saw any network who charged for port in since porting of numbers began...
(I know this is a deals website - but surely people value their time when deciding about the merits of a deal?)
But for £9.99  First time i see you need to pay for this...
Ive registered a prepaid card that they cannot charge me so would this mean the balance of my account would go negative ?
would they try to chase you for payment ?
Notice a lot of folk have reported issues like this moving from one billing period to another. This is a free account so not sure why a billing error would apply - I'm well below any limits.
I seem to get many outages on FP - I'm using Three 321 PAYG SIM as my main SIM no issues. FP is all over the place even their IP only service like the app for "SMS" is flaky, as is their customer support.
But avoid FP - it is worst than TPO 20X !!!!
My point is - not all networks cost the same to call. I'd bet that this Freedom Pop number is one of the "premium" mobile numbers which cost more from certain networks and VOIP providers. As an example,a few years back T-Mobile did not include such numbers in inclusive minutes.
My crappy TPO sim refused point blank to call a Delight number.
Thanks for any help
p.s. Tried to register with the forum but only get redirected to an US iPhone advert! Anyone succeeded in registering?
Cheers
How long does it take?
Don't get me wrong, this certainly is NOT for everybody, and I wouldn't recommend anyone use it as their main sim, but if you have a low data usage requirement like I do for a second handset or a dual sim phone then why pay for data you don't have to?
read the term and condition carefully
"You also authorize FreedomPop to charge £3.48 every month for continued service."
Asda sim comes with free 10 mins, 10 texts, 10 MB. If you use one of those every 3 months, it could keep it active without topping up.

Anyone know of a PAYG SIM that will receive texts and not expire if I don't put credit on it?
But I hear what your saying though?
I had wondered about this too mind?, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I'm still deliberating biting the bullet still ..... :-)
If you are a high user don't bother, if you are a low user and have a decent 3 signal, it's great.
Skype call quality is 10X better, and the are using same voip protocol.
So decided to leave it in my iPad just for browsing,as this is only one thing which works perfectly and steady.
It's a crap service. Just consider it to be 200mb of data per month, and forget about the calls aspect.
Unless i'm on wifi the call quality is so poor i can't use it
Luckily I managed to swoop in and save it before all was lost
But I hear u about the VoIP concept mind?, as I agree with u .....
I really don't know why people bother with FreedomPop!
No problem whatsoever, and battery life seems exactly the same as before., though I do live very near a Three mast.
Version 18.04.394.1015
- Fixed the Echo Cancellation Calibration
- Allow user to log in when UK SIM card is not recognized by App
- Improved push notification for text and incoming calls by adding heartbeat
- Minor UI/UX updates
- Minor bug fixes
Cold from me
Killing the app brings back my Three 321 caller ID. Must find a way to do this less violently
Still can't work out how to Text. Tried 0447, 00447, +447, 011447 none of those is working.
I have run out of mins in my main phone and hence planned to use FreedomPop for calls today.
Anyone is getting same message?
I am able to use the data to browse fine.
Worst MVNO I have tried here in the UK.....
Why are you even bothering?! We all know FreedomPop is a joke.
Time to punt your sim card into the bin (or into something that just requires the data), and start again!
Tried with FreedomPop data and also home wifi. Same message.
Headset to headset calls via Skype will almost never have any echo.
They've given me an extra 200mb for some reason.
Which is nice.
I particularly like the detailed call, text and data usage information on the online 'My Account' feature.
No Whatsapp turned on yet though on the first day test.
I am on testing this for 2 weeks now & more and more dislike freedom pop. Soon it will go to my rubbish bin, i think.
Contact number 01138 870 823
- octopus
saw comment from someone that was asking how to port his number, are you crazy??????????????
On what basis would you say that's "crazyyyyy"?
Btw freedompop is 3g only for the next few weeks then 4g rolls out
Look at the post #480 is on the bottom of page link: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/200-minutes-200-texts-200mb-every-month-for-one-off-payment-6-99-freedompop-2287077?page=24#comments
SIM card from Three is just for internet.
Anyway,as said before it is not good enough for calls&txts and to have as main mobile number as now more than half of calls are missing...I am still testing it further and will see what happens.
Many times when opening app it says "registering" and the fails, saying :"retrying"
But VOIP model is crap! There are many MVNO,but NONE uses Voip for services and for good cause...
I used Vectone,Asda Mobile,Tesco,Ovivo,Kontakt-they all had normal voice services from Vodafone,EE,O2 and quality was superb, never ever lost any calls when now I receive only half of the calls.
Basically FreedomPop uses network Three for mobile data and then their app for voip services. Bad,very bad idea which is bound to fail eventually.
NOW I REALLY START TO HATE THEM!!!!!!!!!!
And this is an answer why more than a half of calls are missing...
No idea what these clowns are doing.
I wanted to use one sim in my iPad, and didn't realise I needed a nano one :/ Oh well, cutting is in order then...
"FreedomPop: Five things you need to know about UK's first free phone service"
Isn't the first thing to know that it's not the first? Ovivo was.
In this deal, the link goes to a US site with no hint of anything UK. Why is that allowed by HUKD's terms?
Yes there's an invite-only Beta on the go for the UK. How does that qualify as a real deal?
Ive entered the meeting for three.co.uk APN settings manually and nothing. I couldn't find anything on FreedomPop's website. not sure what to do, its definitely wasting my battery trying to communicate at least!
Any ideas anyone?
Elephone P7000
http://www.freedompop.com/uk/
Any one know if there is a fix to this as im guessing a lot of people will not answer .
Calls seem better on wifi than 3g, but i am in a week ish area
This FreedomPop stuff is a joke.
And still in Beta, so might get better.
I assumed they were US market only. The description of said app sounded very US-oriented.
APN type: default
APN protocol: IPv4
That's more than enough really.
SIM just won't communicate!
Anyone knows the APN ????
I have it on my tab 2 and calls and texts go to my phone (with the SIM) and the tablet without the sim
Also someone will have to be quick, they sent a email today saying bata is closing soon
Maybe you could experiment for us? If the experiment fails, the option to assign/change your virtual number is always available through your online account.
HOWEVER, there may be a way of doing it for those who haven't signed up yet. You see, when signing up, FreedomPop don't obligate you to choose a number. So maybe if you skip that step you could dial out using the real number on the SIM, if you have Premium Voice enabled. Just an idea.
Is there off-network roaming?
We currently do not support off-network roaming. In order to receive calls and texts, you will need to be connected to WiFi, or have a connection to a 4G/3
Number on sim is not working-tried! Only number you were given when signs up works!
Don't listen to these fools...
Also,Premium Voice works for calling only! If no wi-fi or 3G incoming calls are not received even Premium Voice active! TESTED!
Texts works through their App ONLY! TESTED!
Wonder if the two numbers can function simultaneously?
This morning, the message about Fedex. Now the sim is in my hand, courtesy or Royal Mail.
Will try it maybe this weekend
Avoid this crappy company!
So no tracking information will ever be available for this, and certainly not at Fedex. Not only is the tracking information wrong, the very concept of "tracking" is irrelevant.
I hope that's just a blip and everything's great from here on (and that I never have cause to contact them)...
Maybe Fedex will develop prescience in 24 hours...
Also I do know how to complain to my bank! The point - I thought I made this clear - was that there were some causes for concern. If could go to my bank and might do so, but the cause for concern remains - that I was charged and can't contact them to find out why.
Here's what the message indicates.
Your order xxxxxxx has shipped! Tracking code Not Available. It may take up to a day for the shipping information to appear at Fedex.
Have to say - C R A P!
It requires data always on to make or receive calls.
Requires app to download for making/receiving calls.
So far have missed half of calls (must be have been out of mobile data coverage)
No Roaming !!!
Would not recommend!
I want to know if this is a viable future spare sim for free, not an artificial "it works for now"
Not feeling a great deal of optimism just now... they could at least link "contact us" to The Samaritans or something...
thanks
I uninstalled it and guess what? Data use is the same, give or take a mb I have taken a wee hit on battery but as I said I still get up to 3 days on a charge and that's not running to empty.
What's the point in having a smartphone which runs out of battery mid-day?
Also wouldn't apps such as Whatsapp run in the background and suck your data allowance if you leave it on?
Yes, what's the problem with that? Isn't that the whole point of a smartphone?
CALLS DON'T COME OUT OF YOUR DATA ALLOWANCE, but it still needs to be on.
I agree it should better be called pre-paid (or even pre-paid debit card) rather than pre-paid credit card as you do not get credit but just using the money you have save on your card.
But The term of pre-paid credit card have been used across the industries.
money.co.uk, MSE for instance used it
"Compare prepaid cards"

I have and all seems fine so far.
We that are in should use our fp links to get others on as both sides get a extra few mb every month.
Read this
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/recurring-payments
How do I cancel a continuous payment authority?
You have a LEGAL RIGHT to have payments cancelled. Even if companies refuse, banks MUST cancel them for you.
In June 2013, the Financial Conduct Authority reiterated banks MUST cancel a continuous payment authority when asked. It also added that if further payments are taken in error after a customer asks for a cancellation, the bank must refund them.
a recurring transaction the payment is processed on your card number with no instruction to cancel. if you cancel your card the payment is legally allowed to go through on the canceled card where a continuous payment authority has been given to the company and the new card details have not been provided. you cannot stop it yourself the bank must fill in a form to block the company in question. yes it's possible but if the amount or expected payment date changes to that out with the blocking parameters then the payment can still go through. you will get a refund but its not as quick as same day indemnities with a direct debit.
it's a shady practice of taking payments used by loan companies and fraudsters look up online raspberry ketones misleading sales. they legally did not carry out fraud.
people paid £1.99 postage and packing however in the small print it was stipulated that unless cancelled with the company they would continue your subscription with a monthly fee of £79.99 for one box of tablets. people were oblivious and I saw loads of people hit with the charge. we would block the company and pass the case to fraud investigation since the only contact number for the company was in the US and never answered.
Because I was OVIVO customer where I was benefiting them for about two years, Because I am also a truly bargain hunter. I will be signing up to this deal....
You need to turn on battery saver or its equivalent.
Alternatively, get used to switching off the data connection via the notification panel toggle (and in so doing, be prepared to lose the ability to receive and make FreedomPop calls/texts  )!
Basically - welcome to the nonsense that is FreedomPop.
I called the number on Saturday, waited for 10+ minutes each time before the line was cut off, no chance to talk to anyone!
Emailed on Saturday, no response so far...
How can I cancel it???
I guess you could bring up the default dial pad in the event of an emergency - and then cross your fingers that it'll work . But it is a far from ideal setup.
Now take from my experience what you will
So I think the only way to know if that would automatically go through the standard network rather than VOIP through data would be to contact FreedomPop and ask them.
Note that it will be easy then to check whether this actually uses the 3 voice (rather than data) network!
http://www.voipfone.co.uk/prices_new.php
Note that "normal" numbers such as vodafone, giffgaff, orange, etc are charged at 10p/min.
For "premium" mobiles such as Vectone, Delight, Lebara, they are charged at 20p/min - and worse still, cannot actually be called by some operators - as an example, TPO wouldn't let me call a delight number.
Historically such numbers weren't included in inclusive minutes by tmobile, but that was company politics - Idon't think this is the case any more.
One thing I haven't seen touched on though, these numbers that they give us are 'UK mobile' numbers, but the sequence of the area code part of the number looks different to other networks, or at least those I have seen. Is there any risk that they may actually be deemed as premium numbers rather than UK mobile numbers by another network and therefore those calling you on the FreedomPop number from a different network may be charged extremely high call charges?
so is this worth it? if so i'll purchase it now
Now take your £7 and invest in a proper mobile service
Then you have failed to follow the steps mentioned in the post and various comments. Select the free option rather than the free trial, if you see any offers, skip them as they are premium, untick all boxes. Total charges will be £5 for the sim plus £1.99 delivery, the message at the final checkout is something along the lines that you authorise them to take a monthly charge of £0.
Edit: Tried again and it's working now...
It replace the default dialer with FP dialer.
You need to force stop FP when you want to make a call through your normal dialer (e..g in this context EE)
Somehow the text sent through FP doesn't receive.... any one else?
Anyway I reckon for a one off payment of £6.99 it's worth a punt,so I've got in early to "suck it and see"
I got into Ovivo late, just about got my £20 worth out of it before it folded..
UPDATE:
had second thoughts and cancelled my order next day....see post #410 ...and what a to do it was
I guess if you use a app like google voice it will come out of your 200mb data
There are far better alternatives out there.
The calls can ONLY be made over a high speed data connection. Even calls over HSDPA seem to be choppy. & of course, if you need to make an emergency call, then you better hope you are in a high speed internet area!
Also, can the app be used on wifi (with the free 200 mins) while overseas to make calls back to the UK?
So, this is just like a Skype service, which itself is usually free? What is the benefit of this, then? It seems like, if you don't want to pay extra, it pretty much needs to be used at home on wifi, via the app, if you get a signal, and only rarely away from home if you don't want to use your data allowance? Is that right?
AVOID THEM unless if u are willing to use 200mb free data
For info my SIM hadn't been dispatched and I couldn't be bothered with a VOIP service
Ask to speak to cancellation department
Just as well, now that others have pointed out the free talk time is a VOIP service it takes the shine out of the deal (still good for the right user but probably stick with three's 123 payg)
The way I view it - I have 3 months of free airtime courtesy of the cashback....with a v.v.good iD mobile app, and excellent customer service - and I think it also comes with free roaming in various countries around the world.
My point though was that there are deals popping up all the time on HUKD for proper sim cards that don't rely on data to make phone calls. I personally want my phone to work in an emergency - so that is why FreedomPop is an absolute no go for me.
This was too good to be true!
Not getting 4g, even though i get 4g on my 3 network, i tried on my note 3 and did few calls, it all depends how much speed you get in your area and congestion.. Calls were very patchy. Both parties have issues hearing.
Dunno.
Thanks,
NGP
Better to just get a GiffGaff sim card and stick some credit on it. If you sign up via a referral link, you get an additional £5 credit.
GiffGaff runs on the O2 network - which has fantastic 2G coverage (not necessarily the best for a data connection - but then again, that isn't what you are needing when making an emergency call).

Could have been because it was a phone company.....it didn't even go through and then decline. Just decline straight away same as yours so not sure what to think.
Freedompop have been around for a while, and got tonnes of mainstream news coverage. Its not some random fraudster who just popped up.
EDIT: Never mind, found the UK version. The link on their website points you to the USA-only version of the iTunes app.
Perfect for my parents mobiles and my work mobile.
Voted cold.
I can't for the life of me work out how they managed to botch the UK launch so badly.
As previously mentioned LIFE MOBILE are currently offering 500/500/500 for 500 (£5). I contacted their customer service who assured me that this introductory rate will continue for the lifetime of the SIM card/deal, rather than just for a couple of months introductory. I am in the process of abandoning TPO who have yet to answer any of my enquiries and whose website is faulty. LIFE is owned/operated by EE.
Once the number porting goes live, will switch over entirely, and happily pay for some of the extras too.
This is what written when I tried to download its app!!!
they don't
I've tried using payg VOIP over Wifi from my mobile and call quality is significantly poorer than when using it on my laptop, or getting them to do a VOIP callback to my mobile. Might just be my mobile not handling voice over wifi so well, but be warned - it could affect FreedomPop users too if their mobiles are similar.
Now I tend to use it in callback mode which charges me for two calls at 1p per minute, but gives good quality. Wouldn't have that option with freedom pop, assuming the underlying technology is similar.
when they sank eventually, i didnt lose my number or anything.
Can see the complaints coming in and well i told you so will be coming! Crap website cut and paste from the usa even got some things in dollars for what is essentially a whatsapp viber service but you can make normal calls! You can make normal calls on skype and viber at a cost! This is so revolutionly! Lol even the press have got sucked in because at first i thought it was OVIVO but its not traditional minutes like OVIVO and you can't port your number not that you'd want to because you might never get it back!
There is mobidata and three themselves do better deals! Just to save yourself a few pounds a month! Even EE had 100gb a month deal for two months and only for a tenner much better than this! I'm not touching this with a 20 ft barge pole. Kiss goodbye to £7
Also looks like the company has done a rush job to get company started up as all they have done with T&C is copy and paste from usa site
Here's the direct link for deactivation: http://www.freedompop.com/static/modals/deactivationWarning.htm
(Or have you already tried this?)
Hope it lasts long and has good network
I've used the Liberty mobile service in the US and that can switch from Wifi to cellular voice circuits during a call. Its all seamless there is no dropout. Even on normal calls on cell phones you may be switched between cell towers several times during a call.
If anyone manages to follow these instructions and gets the option to turn off VM please post how you got it to work. I've not got my SIM yet so will wait.
Also I installed the APP before getting my SIM, so I have to uninstalled and use the SIM before I reinstall the app according to the FAQ.

Thank goodness I didn't port my personal number over that I've had for over 15 years. Whatever you do, DO NOT port over & risk losing your number if FP decides to add this extra service at later stage. Not worth the risk with this overseas US based centric business.
Anyway, good when you are in control of what you use. With Three network, you must have a phone with 3g or above to use their network.
I am not advocating that they are as crooked as the scam artists I'm about to mention but its the same payment trick they use;
you may remember adverts online for raspberry keetone tablets for £1.99 P&P only. buyers suddenly found they were charged £70.00 the following month. it stated in the terms and conditions that unless cancelled with them before the end of the first month, the supply would continue. they also used the same billing method and lots of people only then found that their card issuer had no ability to cancel or change back the payment as you signed the rights to the company to allow them to charge your card directly.
I really hate this type of payment as it strips you of the direct debit guarantee and protect you as a consumer
http://www.fca.org.uk/news/continuous-payment-authorities-your-right-to-cancel
If any of the comments are not true then I might take another look at this, with one eye
Coupled with needing a data connection to make and receive calls, having to use their app, and sharing of my data! its not for me. Giving this a miss!

IMHO theres no excuse.
Wheres Scooby Doo when you need him?
See how irrelevant this kind of "cold" voting is without any form of price information factored in ....
I'm currently with tesco.
If you go over your monthly data amount, your credit card on file will be charged a small amount so that you may continue using your FreedomPop service without interruption. The overage rate is as follows:
Free plans = 1.5p/mb (£15/GB)
Paid plans = 1p/mb (£10/GB)

For the best user experience, we recommend solely using our apps for making calls and sending text messages.
NOTE: iOS users will not be able to make calls using the iPhone's native dialer. We recommend hiding the app in a folder and using our app to place calls.

Its all a bit pig in a poke atm.
Using this page I have found that the app is probably not needed, even though they want you to use it:
I have also found that porting your current number in is not possible yet:
I hope this helps some people :man:
They are sly and add things if you go over you will be charged and they have continous credit/debit authority so you have been warned hardly worth the hoops i only pay £5 a month for my mobile deal!
In america they throttle the free users and give priory to paid users! Just a gimmick! Let me see if 100,000 get suckered in tats only 700k just enough to get disappear!
Ovivo part II
the app iteself all will not work unless wifi or 3g is enabled - clearly states that in the t&c. they do have a 2g signal but 3g or wifi have to be switched on at all times and only then will it work with the app. youll kill you 3g data so quick you wont know even know its happened under the free 200 min plan!!!!
I have looked for a phone number or email/contact box on the site to be able to cancel but cannot find anything.
Has anyone got a way of contacting these con artists so that I can cancel under distance selling regulations?
Cheers
I won't buy your statement.
(This is getting out of hand!)

EDIT: Everything works if you view it through the search bar - says porting is not supported yet :disappointed:

For those who don't know, the 6GB EE SIMs can be bought from Amazon.
My next phone will definitely have to be dual-SIM.
Get 200mb free if login on android or ios app first time.
Not so much the money, as very little tied up in it, but persuaded family members to sign up to it and then looked a right numpty after a couple of weeks when it folded. Then had the hassle to organise new providers for them etc.
Yes there are apparent concerns with how they operate and some of us are a little reluctant for them to keep credit card details on file, but your complaint seems solely on the self-entitlement basis of 'I don't care you are giving me something for free, I want more'.
In my home dash > Billing > Automatic Top-Up: Enabled.... change it no

I signed up for 2 pre-pay credit cards linked on this site a month ago and neither of these arrived either - so maybe this is not legit. However why give us a nice account login and the choice of mobile numbers if this is not legit?
But, if you think about it, if we do need the FreedomPop Messaging App to make/receive calls and texts then why will we need the sim card?
Thanks
lol, isn't this pretty dreadful then? If mobile data has to be on all the time just so you can receive texts/calls then that 200mb will go in a heartbeat! That can't be right can it?
However, if you want to use your calls and texts on another phone/device you can download an app, login with you freedompop account, and use those calls as VOIP calls.Similar to what virgin do with their landline phone service where they allow you to download the virgin app so you can use your phone to make landline calls that come out of your landline allowance.
Like i said only worth it for the free 200mb and you would have to install a cellular counter to make sure you don't go over unless you wanna pay 99p for their data counter alert
If you approach or go over your free data, what happens?
If you go over your monthly data amount, your credit card on file will be charged a small amount so that you may continue using your FreedomPop service
and the 200 mins is not traditional calls so its no more than whatsapp or viber calling and using your data allowance!

I think Ovivo lasted 2 years??? Was worth the initial £5 if you got in early!
It might be worth using the 1gb data trial and then downgrade! Can you do this straight away or do you have to wait until the month is nearly finished before downgrading to the free one!

If FreedomPop cease trading, how much money would you lose?
Clue: one amount is huge; one amount is miniscule.
So use credit card to pay, and you are covered for a year !!!
200MB will be more than enough for a month for me if the coverage is that bad as I move about quite a bit
Oh so it won't work on any 3g phone??? like blackberry or a 3g nokia?
Also the calls will cain your 200MB data allowance
Can i still use it for the ipad mini then if i don't want the calls? i.e for a back up data?

My mum wants to continue using her 2G phone. Struggled with a basic touhscreen phone when I switched her account to Three.
Currently on Delight mobile but this seems a better offer, if it will work on 2G.
see how it dose
Also how much do they charge for going over the 200 mins? and 200 texts?
Does this switch to 2g with three backing deal or is it 3g only? So will not work in a 2g phone
Automatic Top-Up and Pay As You Go
FreedomPop ensures you'll never be left without service should you exceed your monthly plan capacity. For any extra data that you use, you will be charged on a Pay As You Go basis. To cover any Pay As You Go charges, our Automatic Top-Up feature will fund your credit account £5.00 the first time you get within 20MB of your monthly plan capacity limit. You can turn off this feature at any time.
And what's the chances of mobiles.co.uk, being part of CPW, going bust? Answer: Very low.
If you untick this then the small print updates to show
I don't understand how they will maintain this service, it's exactly on the same model as ovivo and will go burst.
The service seems to work off wimax towers?
