I'd advise caution on this, the ecosport is a hateful car with quite poor reviews. It's built in India and aimed squarely at people who want an SUV type car but can't stretch to a Kuga.

When did they making towing illegal? Most setups with a trailer of any significant weight (caravan etc.) are 30-50bhp/ton. Poor NCAP rating? Um, what?

Both the Adult Occupant and Child-in-Carseat tests look perfectly reasonable to me. Under the same test regime (2013) it proved better than the Mercedes CLA, better than the Honda CR-V and better than the Mazda 6.

The pedestrian rating isn't great, down there with the BMW i3 and Renault Captur but that's a common problem on small, blunt and high vehicles. Even the B-max only manages mid-sixties. Better to stick to a hatchback.

So about 4.2p per mile extra for the 10k deal. I don't know how much the excess/depreciation costs charged by this leasing company would be, but 4.2ppm seems quite low, and on the face of it, the 10k deal seems better value.

It's better if you're doing around 8000 or over per year. Personally I do between 6000 and 7000 so the cheaper option is much better. It's only good value if you're going to use the extra.

No, it's when you take out a deal for say 10k miles per annum, but actually end up doing more miles than that. When you return the vehicle at the end of the lease, the lease company will charge you the excess mileage/depreciation.

karlie88
31 Aug 15 3 #18
Hmmmm...not sure about this deal. Price seems reasonable but this is a very basic SUV. Poor reviews online. 90bhp for a 2 tonne vehicle = 0-62mph in 14 seconds. Add a driver and 3 passengers then I'm sure you'd be reaching 20 seconds.

List price is £15.8k but can be bought for £13k. Parkers values the car £8.8k after 2 years and 20k miles. So about £4k in depreciation with this lease costing £3.5k. Not a big difference - certainly smaller than I was expecting.
Supercharge_Me to karlie88

The power for the car is fine, 98bhp for a 1300kg vehicle is average. As its a diesel the torque at low revs is more than adequate. Not spoiling for a fight, just sharing knowledge.

It's a marketing trick, calling it the Eco Sport are buzz words. But in effect they cancel each other out for this car. Calling it the "Ford Nothing" doesn't have quite the same ring to it lol.

It's all well and good to say that it isn't as bad as some people make out but I spent quite some time looking into this class and the Ford Eco Sport has nothing going for it, not one selling point over it's rivals imo so what's the point? Even if you are a die hard Ford fan there is the B-Max.

There are 2 different ways to look at it, 1) don't get this car because it is rubbish in every way or 2) don't get this car because every other car in the class is better in some way (including price in some cases).

Either way.. just don't get this car.

P.S. We went for the Ford B-Max, very good reviews and ticked many boxes for us.

I almost purchased a Vauxhall Insignia a few years back, which was underpowered for the weight of the vehicle. Like you, i don't drive fast and don't need to accelerate hard and so no problem!? Upon driving the vehicle i found that you had to put your foot most of the way to the floor and it would eventually pick-up speed. This meant that you needed to think ahead if you were going to perform any manoeuvre. OK, no great shakes, but it was a change of thinking on how to drive and i didn't feel connected to the vehicle. Any slight gradient and the vehicle would start to slow down and you would be dropping through the gears; engine always felt like it was straining.
The big problem though was that if you were in the outside lane and a filter was coming up, for instance, you would have no ability to accelerate to safely get into position. Thing is, other drivers would be expecting you to do this and so it could all get very messy. As for over-taking, God help you!
Point i am making is that i would think long and hard about buying an under-powered vehiclei.e. under-powered, as opposed to low-power, which is completely different!
smallsteve
31 Aug 15 #24
By the way, i don't know if this vehicle is under-powered as i haven't looked at the review. I am merely making a general point, which may be relevant to this and other deals.

Probably just below average I'd say. It's also got poor fuel economy compared to its rivals (Juke etc.)

Let's just say, going up a slip road to join a motorway is not the most pleasant experience in this car. Starting from 30mph, you'll be lucky to be hitting 50mph by the time you join it. Add a few passengers on the chunky side and couple of 20kg pieces of luggage and you're looking at just over 40mph.

For the type of car this is, there's no denying it's underpowered - you could argue that it could be unsafe in certain situations.

For use in and around the city, I don't see a problem. But as for national speed limits...

Ford blew it with this car. Cheap import from India and not up to the usual standard they offer. It launched with terrible reviews from everyone so much so that within 12 months they announced the development of a new version.

The new one is available to order from next month I think. Better ride, you can remove spare wheel, better equipment levels including heated screen. I would still avoid though..

It is interesting how many people make up their minds based on online reviews. The same online reviews that praise the Dacia's.

I saw one on the road recently and it is much better looking in real life. Certainly more than a Dacia. And the interior is fine. Drove the 98bhp version recently as a loan car and it was more than adequate. It is very torquey and coped well with acceleration. It is no high speed demon though.

For the price it is a reasonable car. Better than a Dacia anyday. Or even the ugly as sin Juke. That does make me vomit, yet there are so many on the road. See it, drive it and make your mind up. Dont believe the online reviews blindly.

This is under a fiver a day for 2 years. Not a bad price for a spacious family runabout.
mrwhitelabel to indyjukebox
31 Aug 15 #59
they look externally not bad
the interior is quite poor though even at the top spec. It feels and looks very cheap
the drive wasnt the great and was even worse as a passenger with a lot of vibration from axle / gear changes coming up through the floor - which felt quite off putting.
so im not going from reviews, im going from quite a few personal test drives

There isnt as much room as I thought- but then again its built from the footprint of the FIESTA so what did I really expect ?
The rear opening door is an off putting thing too, unless its based in the country and a farm, but its not really capable of much use in this environment
the rear wheel has been removed as received such negative feedback from owners who found it a struggle in the real world of parking in limited spaces.

is it a cheap deal yes it is, but for good reason
is it a hot deal.. well thats for you all to decide yourself

Putting the numbers/fuel economy to one side, it is well and truly underpowered. I've driven one with no passengers and it was struggling to go up a 10% incline.

Who knows what would've happened if I had Peter Kay, Johnny Vegas and Michelle McManus in the car - probably would start to roll backwards towards the top of the hill.
jacko791
31 Aug 15 3 #92
I think people are definitely being a bit over critical here.
As a few others have said, talk of it being dangerously slow is quite ridiculous. I've not driven one but the weight is the same as my old ford escort but this car has an extra 30bhp. I was definitely able to exit slip roads onto the motorway at 80mph+ in that so this car should be fine.

If you actually read the review linked in car magazine too there is hardly any criticism, their summary came down to "We’re disappointed with the Ecosport’s unenthusiastic handling, and gripes about Ford’s exterior and interior design remain."

So if you're happy with how it looks then the only issue is the handling, and I don't think anyone buying one of these is looking for a car that handles well.

The review also says "Ford’s gone for a rather soft suspension set-up, prioritising ride comfort and refinement (which is very strong)"

And the review points out that this is the best engine to go for.

Overall you're not going to get anything bigger than a C1/Micra for these monthly payments and I think this will be well ahead of those cars. You'd normally be paying £170ish a month for anything this size with a diesel engine.
brookysm to jacko791

It probably weights a lot more than your old Escort fella and that's the issue. Ford rushed this to market and it shows, by older car standards its good but compared to its competition its lacking considerably.

I sense there's a little lease deal competitiveness going on here, with these two ton weight claims and squabbling over a few mpg and bhp.

My favorite so far is the claim about struggling up hills from someone who posted a leasing deal for the infamous 'Watchdog' Fiat 500 1.2. Even the Stig couldn't get that up a steep hill.

Still an underpowered vehicle going by your standards it seems. The i30, C1 and 1.6 Astra aren't exactly speed machines either.

So why all the negativity and over exaggeration about this deal?
karlie88
31 Aug 15 #100
Underpowered for a SUV. The i30, C1 or Astra are not SUVs. Fiat admitted there was a problem and fixed it. Since then, no problems - hence the deal being posted.

Have a look at the most liked comments, it really is an awful car. Not just the engine, interior is poor and tacky, uncomfortable seats, small boot space for a SUV and awful design when it comes to opening the boot.

Also, I have no idea what you're on about with regards to 'lease deal competitiveness'. I vote a lease deal based on my opinion, just like every other HUKDer out there. Plenty of other lease deals around that I've openly said are great deals.

Additionally, I've given another reason as to why this deal is 'meh' (and perhaps the most significant) - you can buy the car for £13k, sell privately for £9k 2 years later - a loss of £4k. Whereas this lease costs £3.5k - it's not the typical lease where you save £1000+. Granted it's still a saving - but a small one nonetheless.

Still, I have no idea why you seem to have an agenda against me...

To be fair there are no "outstanding" cars in this class, the EcoSport, Juke, Yeti and Mokka have their faults personally I like the Mokka and think it's actually better than the reviews (launch models?) Just ordered a lease Mokka for the wife for £167 with £1149+vat down but it is 1.7 cdti 130ps auto with full leather and nav....

I'm pretty sure people will now make derogatory comments about this vehicle but my wife loves it! but like I say there are no 5 star vehicles in this segment we choose this as it has pretty good performance and spec compared to others in the sector 0-62 in 10ish seconds.

We tried the yeti and duke but my wife like the Mokka the best.

Now bring on the haters.......
Bossworld to OrribleHarry
31 Aug 15 #115
Depends what you want/mean by 'outstanding'.
Countryman Cooper S (0-60 in 7.5 seconds) was my choice when I was looking due to the way the Juke Nismo (closest alternative) is shaped, meaning it's bulky outside but not very roomy inside. That said, I think the Nismo RS has the larger boot of the normal 2014+ Juke so slightly better, albeit more expensive than the outgoing one.

31 Aug 15 #106
So basically you pay a total of £3552 over 24 months plus whatever a 10k service would cost.

Providing you don't mark the car badly or go over mileage you hand it back no final payments no catch?

Another question does it have to be serived by ford?

Seems like a fairly good deal. If you got it from ford dealer you pay more a month and likely be very lucky to sell it to cover what you would owe the credit company!

31 Aug 15 #109
Erm, not stupid, no. Just struggle to see how £3.5k to rent a fairly cr*p car for a couple of years is a good deal.
It just seems a ridiculous amount of money. Yes it probably works out cheaper than the depreciation if you were buying it, but that argument only works if you were going to buy a brand new focus, which most people would not be considering as its not a great car, and most people don't buy new cars.
So as I said, stupid idea and not a hot deal in my opinion.
barryallott
31 Aug 15 1 #110

I appreciate some people have to buy new cars so that used cars are available. But no-one would buy one of these hateful things through choice surely? The fact that they're this price to lease suggests that they probably can't sell them, which isn't surprising really.

It's an average car. Neither great nor crap.

As with any asset, if it appreciates, buy it. If it depreciates, lease it. It's really simple finance principles.

Cheap lease deals mainly exist due poor sales, needing to get rid of stock or a car coming to the end of its life.

I completely agree. Certain people in this thread have seen too much Top Gear and saying some frankly ridiculous things, take this deal over to Pistonheads and I'm sure it'll be well received. I have a clue when it comes to this leasing thing - so please be gentle on the dummy.
£1750 a year seems alot - i always factor in £1000 a year depreciation when buying a car that is 4 or 5 years old?
Please educate me
OrribleHarry to shalton
1 Sep 15 #152
New cars depreciation is waaaaayyyy faster usually approx 30% of cars new value in the first year alone. You are correct in allowing a lower depreciation later in life as it slows down after the initial "hit".
Think of it this way it's not your car, your just paying someone else's depreciation. These lease companies have such huge buying power however that they command a much bigger discount than you could get as an individual. This means you often pay less in
payments than you would in depreciation alone, however this isn't always the case so make sure you check the deal out thoroughly.

1 Sep 15 #155
This argument comes out a lot. It's pretty meaningless since cars are really the only thing that you can lease. Unless you're advocating we all get rental agreements for new TVs, mobile phones washing machines etc.
Also, the argument that leasing is better than buying only works if the objective is to end up with a brand new example of a specific model of car. In this case it's not a car that most people would ever think about buying new on account of its horrendous looks and average reviews so the argument to lease rather than buy this car falls over.

My 2 pence..

This car is just OK.. It seems to have been a bit of a flop from Ford and the rear tyre was removed as standard to try and improve the rear end. The residuals on these will be very poor (of course not an issue on lease). When I sat in one it felt very plasticy (similar to the old Dacias and Kias), even in the titanium model which is supposed to be top of the range. For this kind of price I think you can pick up a Fiesta which is a much more refined car and feels so much better inside.

It also lacked some of the features expected from a Ford such as heated front screen, which I think is now an optional extra. I don't think Ford have sold anywhere near as many as they expected to.

But like anything some will love it and others wont, overall it is a decent price for an OK car..
