Faster dual cores are preferable from a performance perspective and while lots of slow cores can be a route to power efficiency this wasn't a very efficient chip when it launched and there are newer chips that do it much better.

It's competent but certainly not excessive.

hi. can anyone recommend a decent laptop for me please? i was looking at the HP pav 15 P-264NA but would prefer a more updated dual core. but i do like the listed specs for this one - it's for my uni course, gaming & streaming so appreciate any advice. also need to find a compact printer too-has to be light & economical. cheers

Was hoping there would be a main stream laptop that would be good enough to play games upto about £500 as its only for my 11 year old son but he informs me he needs one for games, my old laptop goes pixelated when trying to play City Skylines so I assume it's not good enough, the other games are Ark Survival evolved.

Obviously a i5 using the same design as the Pentium would be because they're otherwise identical. It's no surprise that a £140 chip will beat a £40 chip from the same company that it's being sold alongside.

A reasonable comparison would be a second hand i5, I guess you can pick up an i5-750 for that sort of money or one of it's AMD contemporaries. If they had similar maximum performance then the dual cores would be a better choice than the quad cores.


TDP is a measure of maximum possible heat output. While it does reflect maximum power output, it's only very tenuously related to what typical heat output and power draw would be. Partly because it's measured differently by Intel and AMD, partly because different chips have different power saving features.

Given that their 'typical power consumption' figures are an identical 81.24% of TDP for both they're clearly nothing of the sort

Quite an old AMD laptop now, it's on a 32nm fabrication process but most other AMD's at retail now are on 28nm and Intel's on 22nm. The main strength of this laptop is the GPU but because its a generation out of date you'll probably find the newer A8 laptops as good with other improvements elsewhere and the price will be similar. Worth checking other deals on hotukdeals. The HP cashback and tradein promotion is still going to the end of the month on certain models.

While that's a very broad statement to make, it purely depends on what you're using it for, yes in this case it could have six or eight cores and it'd still be smashed by a Pentium level laptop.

But if we're talking a i5 vs an overclocked G3258 in a proper gaming build the i5 will win in the more modern games, it will also be better at encoding audio/video, will probably destroy it in the compression benchmarks too.

Yes it's got less storage, but who is storing 1TB of information on a laptop? You're just asking for trouble.

Quad core AMD in a laptop? Can be used as a portable heater in winter then. This thing will cook itself to death.

Also, RE the comments above about wanting to use it for storing photos and videos, sounds insane. Why are you storing your backups on site? Use Dropbox or something.

Good price yes but not for a refurb. (Though that depends how willing you are to wait and shop, but there is better for less posted on this site. (On mobile so finding a link right now would be a nightmare but if I remember when I get home I'll edit this with it.
