For those that haven't come across O2 Refresh, this is a product where the handset cost (e.g. iPhone) is split from the airtime tariff (minutes, text, data).

YOU CAN PAY OFF THE HANDSET COST AT ANY TIME (inc. immediately after buying, you can then choose to either cancel the airtime tariff agreement or continue by just paying this monthly charge - effectively a SIM only rate).

The pricing for the refurbished iPhone 6 Plus is based on you paying off the handset cost immediately and ending the airtime contract.

The handsets are currently available in all three colours (Gold, Space Grey, Silver) and sizes (16 GB, 64 GB, 128GB). There doesn't appear to be any pricing variation based on colour chosen.

The best price for the various sizes are,
16 GB - £379.99 (£139.99 upfront + 24 x £10)
64 GB - £449.99 (£209.99 upfront + 24 x £10)
128 GB - £509.99 (£149.99 upfront + 24 x £15)

Please remember, you must pay off the 24 month cost for the handset and cancel the airtime agreement to get the prices above. Any calls, texts and data you use before cancelling will incur a charge.

iPhone 6 Plus 5.5-inch display
From £619, £699, £789 for new ones

People are asking the same questions or saying the prices aren't coming up without reading the comments so hopefully this post will help as it's getting a bit repetitive and tedious, no offence intended.

1. Follow the link or go to O2.CO.UK
2. Select the relevant phone
3. Select SHOW TARRIFS
4. Select SHOW MORE
5. Find the tarrif with the corresponding UP FRONT COSTS from the OP (DO NOT worry about the monthly cost, they will not match the OP pricing)
6. At the bottom it will clearly state the device plan cost (which should match the OP) ***THE REASON FOR THIS IS THE AIRTIME CAN BE CANCELLED WITHOUT CHARGE***
7. Receive phone in post/pick up phone
8. Request unlock code (I advise against turning on phone or using the sim)
9. Call up and cancel airtime and pay off device plan ***AFTER THE UNLOCK CODE IS RECEIVED***
10. (OPTIONAL) Cancel the DD for the airtime and device plan. This will remove the chance of O2 incorrectly charging you for the airtime contract, which has happened in a few unfortunate cases.

That's what I read when these "deals" first started being posted for o2 refresh. It clearly states you can cancel the whole contract both parts or switch your phone not cancel one part and keep the phone. Thus making this less of a deal and more of a scam to get a phone at a reduced rate than it would be on PAYG from o2.

People have commented on other "deals" they were charged a few weeks after cancelling @£29*24 and had hassle getting it refunded. o2 are more than entitled to do this and put a black mark on your credit and ban you from future contracts as by following this process you are breaching terms and conditions and trying to blag a phone discount that's only applied as part of an on going airtime contract!

Yes it might work in theory but noteably only if done manually via the phone. Just remember that because the system allows it to be put through doesn't mean it's permitted. What it's actually supposed to do is allow you to pay off the phone so you can immediately purchase another and continue your airtime contract.

When it's a rubbish phone they want rid of they probably don't mind but when its a more recent model they'll be more likely to pursue you for the entire contract agreed upon, as by not returning the phone you are technically under contract, even if big Jane from customer service says otherwise, she is just doing what the computer allows at the time.

I'm baffled by this unlocking

following receipt from 02 regarding successful unlock request etc

I put an "3" sim in my phone, immediately on the iphone 3 appeared on the screen
did the itunes bit as per instructions, iphones done a full restore via itunes (with the 3 sim in it)

however never got no message regarding successful unlock etc

last time I unlocked an iphone via Vodaphone, they gave me a code to inputt via itunes to unlock

also phoned 02 to pay off phone, all done, happy days
Thanks to OP

further update, just changed the sim from "3" to 02 no problem
so its now unlocked, Happy days, £379 for iPhone 6plus

Was billed for a full month (£29.97) on 6th August. Got tired of waiting for this to be refunded so called them up. Guy I spoke to said they could only refund £24 due to 'usage'. Couldn't be bothered to argue about this so let it go.
Was a bit annoyed, but I can live with losing £6 for non-usage.

Still loving my phone.

Right here's my take/version of events since I picked up my phoned earlier this afternoon

I've read right through and it appears there's plenty of conflicting advice and stories, so here;s mine

Picked phone up about 4:30
had to put 02 sim in phone to get Imei number (nothing in my online account as mentioned in thread) and phone was asking for a sim to activate etc
anyway sim in, made a call to 202, as per a number of posts (have not used it for either a call or data)
I then filled in the online unlock form
I then tried to phone 202 but had to wait for over 10 minutes
before 02 answered I got through on Live chat

after a few minutes on live chat I was advised to call back in 24 hours after the phone had been used/registered on my account ??? (odd as the phone/number have been showing on my account for 2 days)

received an email back from my online form stating something was wrong and to resend it etc (I may have put the wrong security details in) anyway submitted again since, but this time I entered my last bill details.

I have just tried live chat again, low and behold this time the phone gets unlocked without any problems/questions. advised its been done and will take upto 72 hours but they will do it as a priority (and got the live chat via email)

so fingers crossed this time tomorrow, I should be able to pay off the phone after gettuing the unlock code

Thanks to all on this thread for various tips/advice etc

although no sign of Imei number as mentioned in some posts

Can I just put my Tesco Sim in from the start and cancel and request unlock?
iphone_man
4 Sep 15 1 #627
I Just wanted to confirm the procedure to ensure that I get no shock bills and the unlock goes smoothly:
1. Receive phone in post
2. Call up from my landline and 1) pay off device plan 2) cancel airtime 3) cancel Direct Debit
3. Put the O2 sim in, Turn off mobile data, ring 202, wait for it to connect, then hang up
4. Request unlock code...within 72 hours should be all good to use with another network.

ARE THE ABOVE FOUR STEPS CORRECT?
Also you guys think this deal will become cheaper next week after the new iPhones come out??

I'm looking to get one of these phones. Reading some of the comments here I have a few question. A) Can I use another sim instead of the O2 sim that's sent to activate the phone. From memory all iPhones are locked to the network the first sim it registers to? B) Do you have to complete an unlock request even if you don't use the sim that comes with the phone?
Heavenkiss
25 Aug 15 #624
Telling me I need to make a chargeable call for the IMEI to be registered with the o2 mobile number and then to wait some hours... I've called 202 so hopefully that works. Don't fancy the charges when I try to cancel.

"4. Amount of Credit

4.1 Total amount of credit ( “Amount of Credit” ) is: £240.00

4.2 The total amount you will have to pay: £449.99

4.3 The cash price(s) (the amount you would pay to buy it outright £549.99 )"

Looks like i'm being charged an extra £100 for the 64GB? Anyone have any ideas?
jonalexander970 to Heavenkiss
24 Aug 15 #615
You could give customer services a call just to verify the details.. however having sold refresh contracts myself it should be the total amount you pay only!!.. you have paid £209 upfront so the £449 would be correct:).. The £549.99 would be required upfront if you took the £13 tariff . hope that helps

22 Aug 15 #610
I've looked through a few pages of comments and can't find the answer, but I'm assuming you can't just cancel the airtime contract put carry on paying the phone?
i.e. on the 64GB, pay the £209.99 upfront, cancel the airtime but still pay the £10 for the phone every month for 24 months? This would be an easier way to afford the phone up front rather than paying the £209.99 + 10x£24 (£449.99 is a lot to pay in one chunk even if it is a bargain overall).

I'd recommend everyone to check their account for final balance. Mine had stated £29 had been paid which I had asked to be credited back to me. However, this morning my balance is £555. I've had a chat conversation and they advise it is an early termination charge which will now be refunded and will take up to 10 days! However, if I hadn't checked the money would have been taken. Beware If the money isn't in your account and they do this to you, it will put you overdrawn.

I ordered 64gb 6 Plus, with 39.99p/m tariff. Paid 209.00 upfront and phone arrived next morning. Had issues with getting a nano chip so it wasn't until 6:30pm the same day that I called them. I said I had been offered a better deal trying to transfer my number and wanted to cancel the contract. They said it was fine and that I should use the included slip to return the phone and chip. I asked them how much it would be to keep the phone (like I didn't know). They said £240.00. So I agreed and paid it over the phone. I was told that the phone will be all paid up and unlocked.
They said I would receive a final bill which should be zero due to not even activating sim. However the next day I got an email saying my bill was £1.87. I just left it like that to see if further amounts are going to come up. If it doesn't then I don't mind the £1.87. Will see if anything else happens. I use a GiffGaff sim card so not sure if they have unlocked it as giffgaff sims work in O2 phones. So far so good and I'm very happy.

Also checked online with Apple and my phones 1 year warranty was activated the day I ordered the phone. I have a whole year with Apple. Very Happy.

Great thread, I have a few questions around this

I currently have an existing contract with O2 with an iPhone and is due up in October, so looking at options to get either a 6 or 6 plus.....I was originally thinking to get a phone off eBay (£480 for a brand new 64GB Iphone 6) and then get a sim contract, but after seeing this, it looks like a good options

But I am a bit confused how to go about it, but also can this work when you have an existing contract with O2...my current contract is on a iPhone 4s (£14 per month for 750MB, 600 minutes, unlimited texts)

any help on the best option for a new phone would be greatly appreciated

There is no reason why the "Consumer Contracts Regulations 2014" don't apply here in which case you have 14 days to cancel the contract and they can only charge the proportion you use. The fact the deal is made up of 2 parts is irrelevant.

I guess you are correct. The deal description is misleading because cancelling airtime needs 30 day notice and O2 charges you for that month's airtime.

That's what a chat advisor told me. Here's the relevant excerpt from the T&C's

(b) If you've paid off your O2 Refresh Device Plan(s) (after 24 months or earlier if you choose to pay off early before the end of the 24 month term), you can either:

Decide to continue with your original Airtime Plan. In these circumstances, the combined Pay Monthly tariff will automatically reduce to reflect just the Airtime Plan tariff, until it is terminated on 30 days' notice in accordance with our Pay Monthly Mobile Agreement; or
Take a new O2 Refresh deal. If you're paying off a Device Plan early we waive the remaining months of your linked Airtime Plan that you haven't used, allowing you to upgrade; or
Terminate your Airtime Plan and Pay Monthly Mobile Agreement. We'll waive the remaining months of your linked Airtime Plan that you haven't used (as required by the Consumer Credit Act 1974), entitling you to terminate so that in these circumstances, your Airtime Plan will be treated as not having any remaining Minimum Period for the purposes of paragraph 8.3 of the Pay Monthly Mobile Agreement.

I dont think 30 days notice applicable when you cancel on cooling period (first 14 days). I'm yet to receive the final bill, but many in forum confirmed the final bill around couple of £ based on no. of day the connection was active.

The best value 128Gb (and maybe the other capacities too - I didn't check) is the third 10Gb tariff which has an upfront payment of £149.99 and a device plan termination of £360, i.e. 24 x £15. That brings the total to £509.99 which is the cheapest option.

Hey Rodman, many thanks for taking the time to reply.
I am a bit lost. Its not matching as per your post. Is it not available anymore or am I looking at wrong place. Please let me know as my phone is busted and I need a new phone. For me, this is showing as -
So obviously, as its £10 every month, it will be £240 expensive for me.
16 GB - (£139.99 upfront + 24 x £20)
64 GB - (£209.99 upfront + 24 x £20)
128 GB - (£149.99 upfront + 24 x £25)

Can you please check again for me? Many Thanks

I've received a final bill of £2.80 today but I've been told that will be refunded. I went on to chat as I'd purchased 2 contracts, the other one is still showing full price, even though it says disconnected. The advisor said it takes 5 days from cancellation to cancel. I'd recommend anyone who is concerned to go on chat and then send the transcript to yourself.

I've been very happy with how it's all gone so far (hope I don't have to eat my words) and couldn't be happier with my new phone. Even my husband who was against the Plus said he now prefers it.

3 Aug 15 #531
Because you'll pay extra for the 64gb version.

On a side note, everything went smoothly for me with O2 but maybe because I got a call centre in England? Girl seemed clued up. On another note, the 16gb version isn't as restrictive as I thought. I'm not a huge app person and don't play games on my phone so the only space that is taken up is a bit for Spotify and photos. I'm also a compulsive photo deleter so that helps. I came from a 32gb Note 4 with a 64gb microSD card which was waaaaaay overkill for me.

Allow me

Despite cancelling and paying off the refresh deal the very next day, keeping receipts, emails and confirmations, I was sent chasers for 3 months advising I had not paid the bill and was to be cut off. I engaged 02 customer services over 30 times sending copies of the contract PDFs and bank statements clearly showing the deal and what I had paid them and when, still it went on and on. Eventually Experian chased me and advised I had been given a negative credit scoring as non payment for 5 months on the bounce. I eventually had to go to the communications ombudsman and state my case - this took a further 6 weeks for 02 to acknowledge and reply - eventually getting a formal apology, compensation and the black marks removed. God help anyone applying for a mortgage during that time if this happens to you.

These deals are great - as I said before - refresh is an easy concept - its just messed up by 02 and their moronic clowns in customer services. Think carefully before going ahead with one of these deals as im not the only one with shocking experiences.

Phoned to pay off phone. Have made a call on 202 to tick that box. Paid off phone and tied to get unlock code but they said I had to wait 24 hours. Can I phone now to cancel airtime ?? And is that all I say, "please cancel airtime."??

28 Jul 15 1 #410
You need to make a call first to activate your phone, 202 will do. Then I completed the form and also asked chat to do it for me. You don't have to wait 24 hours, mine's all been done within 24 hours.

Customer services told me that it would not affect unlocking if you cancelled airtime and paid it off. Make sure you ask them to send you email confirmation while you are on phone to them just so you don't have to go through it all again

If its a sealed box, of course it will have everything.

I have purchased 2 of these phones, both have 1 year warranty with 3 months Apple technical support.

You must activate your phone by making a call before you try to unlock it. I just called my home number and didn't answer it and 202 just to be sure. I then completed the form and requested unlock via chat. The call may not be recognised straightaway and therefore they can't process the unlock. I was advised by customer services to reapply for the unlock 24 hours later to be sure it gets processed. I then called 202 to cancel the contract which was very straightforward and I received confirmation of payment of phone and cancellation of contract immediately.

I'm now waiting for my unlock to come through which will hopefully be soon.

So I managed to finally get my phone unlocked after a couple of days of trying. My three sim is now working fine. Called retentions over the weekend to cancel the airtime contract. So here, you go.... You have to activate with 02 sim for them to unlock

Dear O2 Customer,

Thank you for your unlatching request.

Sorry, We are unable to process your request as the IMEI given on the
form has not been used on O2 network.
Please activate the phone with an O2 SIM in it and then resubmit your
unlatching request.

Hi,
I just received mine and payed off the handset straight away (remaining 240) - but to get the unlock code I needed to activate the sim so they can send me the unlock code (within 72 hours) is there something I have misunderstood? Seems I will have to pay for the contract as I have now activated the sim-card?

Really tempted by this, but still can't decide whether or not it's too big, even after looking at a demo phone in the O2 shop. It's a big step up in size from my iPhone 5, but it's a great offer. Shame it's not for the 6, otherwise I'd have likely purchased it by now.

How do people find the size? My worries are how big it will feel in my pocket, especially when I add a case, and also how frustrating it would be to use with one hand.
Aeschylus to theshabster

Put a non-O2 based sim in (so no Giff Gaff, Tesco mobile etc. as these will already work) and then connect to iTunes. I'm just going to get a £1 Vodafone sim from Argos to make sure it works. I believe you can also do it without the sim by erasing your phone and going through the set up again, but personally I'd rather check it with a real sim to be sure.
andymg2000
24 Jul 15 #254
I did do it online yesterday but for some reason they rejected it due to apparently failing security checks. Called 202 off the contract sim this morning as its a free call. On my last refresh deal I used the contract sim to call up and cancel and never got charged anything for the airtime plan.

I've ordered two which just arrived. Both are in as new condition with the front and rear protectors present. Only accessories for both were the USB cable (no plug) and the sim card ejector. The headphones are junk anyway so no loss there.

Turned on with the contract sim card in, connected to wifi immediately as part of set up and turned off mobile data as soon as it was on. Dialed 202 which is the free customer service number in case a call is needed for the unlock. Have requested unlock on both devices so will now wait until that is done before paying of the device contract and cancelling the air time. I used the contract sim to power up the phone last time I did a refresh deal and had no problems cancelling without additional charges attempted by O2. Obviously don't make any paid calls or use the mobile data.

Oh and I checked the apple warranty on both using the serial number. Both have the full 12 months.

Thanks again OP.

Android owners are just so jealous, I don't get it.... You will like this announcement

Apple has been tracking the number of new iPhone customers who switched from Android for a while now. As part of the Q3 2015 conference call, Apple's CEO Tim Cook revealed that this quarter saw the highest number of Android switchers ever.

Apple was so thrilled with the growth, Cook mentioned Android switchers four times over the course of the hour long call:

1)"The strong iPhone results were broad-based in both developed and emerging markets, and we experienced the highest switcher rate from Android that we've ever measured.

2)We also are incredibly happy to see the highest Android switcher rate that we've observed. And so, from our point of view, the iPhone is doing outstanding.

3)But as I back up from it and look at it from more of a macro point of view, the thing that makes me very bullish is the 27 percent number I just quoted; the fact that we are seeing the highest Android switcher rate; the customer satisfaction that we have on the iPhone versus the competition—it's a huge margin; the loyalty rate that we have versus competition, an enormous gap there.

4)In certain geographies, the way that we win is to get [Android] switchers. In other geographies, the way that we win is to get people to buy their first smartphone. In other geographies, the way that we win is to get people to upgrade from their current iPhone."

There are many phones just like this imported from China, however, lack of any sortve support, and possible shipping it back to China just to get a refund (which will inevitably cost) along with many other factors, such as a lack of updates etc are reasons why people don't bother

Plus this uses android, whereas people have a general preference for iOS, whether or not it costs much more.

Why buy branded clothes when you can buy them from primark for a fraction of the cost..

She said that I do need to insert the o2 sim into the phone and make a phone call (any call) and let the call connect at the other end. This will then show up on o2's systems within 24 hours, and they can then unlock the phone. She also confirmed that I won't be charged any airtime, once I have cancelled but obviously if I use any data etc I will be charged.

However, when I asked about actually unlocking the phone, the o2 customer services rep initially said, I'd have to wait until the phone is delivered, I put the o2 sim in it and use the phone for a minimum of 7 days.
I challenged her, and she changed it from 7 days to 24 hours.

I challenged her again, and she went off to talk to 'someone', came back and said I need to put the o2 sim and use it for 24 hours. Pretty crazy how much people are willing to spend but O2 refurb deals are pretty good. About a year ago you could have also got topcashback too but they stopped that after people took advantage. I'm happy enough staying a generation or two behind and getting something rather cheaper. Note 3 currently exceeds my needs and I got that on an o2 refurb for just over £200.

If it helps we have just received an iPhone 5c.
Came in a white box marked grade a refurbished, folded so film holds phone in place.
Phone came with all round protection like taking it out of a new iPhone box.
All that was included was a new coiled lightning cable.
Documents for order in separate pack.

Probably, but the O2 warranty is a bit worthless. I had a slight issue with an HTC I bought through refresh and they just told me to go to HTC directly, they didn't care because I had cancelled the airtime and wasn't their customer.

Again not idea if they handle Apple refurbs differently, but I received my Note in a plan brown box labelled as "Grade A Used" with only a USB cable. Remember it stating somewhere that they don't include chargers with refurbished phones so I'm not sure I'd bank on receiving anything other than the phone itself.

As for condition mine was spotless and still stickered up everywhere, also was unlocked by the previous owner as it accepted other sim cards out of the box. Strangely enough O2 seems to have removed their refurbished phones info section on the website.

I think this is a very good deal. Having bought 2 phones with the refresh deal, I did encounter issues both times but it was all sorted. In terms of the 6 or 6+, I would recommend the 6+ due to the better battery life and bigger screen

I ld love the 6 but crazy to pay more for a much cheaper phone. Bloody O2. the Apple phone size to screen is shocking. 22 Jul 15 #112
So if I was to go for the 64GB option, how much would I pay now? £209.99 and then £10 a month or the full £449.99? What SIM card do I then use and what do I get with regards to airtime, texts and data?
2003bluecat to darkblueblood
22 Jul 15 #114
You can only cancel the airtime contract by paying off the device contract, so you'd pay the £449.99.
You'd need your own sim. Or you can pay the full contract (device and airtime) monthly, but I wouldn't recommend that as it's expensive.
mubashar to darkblueblood
22 Jul 15 #119
The £449.99 is the allocated upfront plus monthly cost total over 2 years just for the phone [£209.99 + (24 months x £10 pm for handset).

You still sign up to a further £29 pm for the airtime in this case but can cancel immediately.

[So you sign up to £209.99 + (24 months x £10 pm for handset) + (24 months x £29 pm for air time) = £209.99 + £240 + £696 = £1,145.99]

For the air time £29 pm you get 10GB 4G ready data, Unlimited texts, Unlimited minutes - IF YOU CHOOSE TO KEEP!

Of course, the deal is assuming you cancel the airtime as soon as you get handset and get it unlocked - hence you will get no air time and pay nothing for airtime.

Hence, the phone will cost you the stated £449.99 incl of upfront cost and the handset monthly cost that you will then be paying effectively also upfront (within days of purchase).

Same concept applies to all other examples.

exactly, if you are a app user then the 16GB should never enter your buying choice, as far as I understand it the lawsuit is about the fact there is only 11GB after system stuff, or something like that, I think Apple thought the cloud was their get out of jail card, but the fact they are about to drop the 16GB suggest to me they are not sure

On my last refresh deal I used the contract sim that came with it. Just make sure you turn data off and if you do need to make any calls to activate the sim for unlock, call 202 for customer services as its free. Can't say I remember needing to do this though.

I really dont see the fuss with the 16GB version, I have an 64GB iPad and a 16GB iPhone. I am not a huge app user I have a few but usually find I need some of the features the full website can give me. I have a selection of songs and videos I update when needed on my iPad and use the cloud for my photos. Sure the 16GB isn't for everyone but I dont see why so many people get in an uproar over it, not everyone uses it for the same purposes, if you need more capacity get the bigger one.

Have you done this before?

Reading the terms and conditions on the cancellation policy it states;

If you're a Refresh customer, you've the right to cancel your whole Refresh deal (both your Airtime Plan and Device Plan Credit Agreement) within those 14 days. Or you can change your device for another one but you can only do this once. If you've signed up to O2 Refresh by buying out your old contract early and then change your mind, you can't go back to your old tariff once your new service has started and you can't get a refund on your old contract buy-out fee.

There is no other evidence that an O2 refresh is seen as two separate elements when you want to cancel
NickyOhMG to justhelping
22 Jul 15 3 #23

I've just done this iphone5s 16 gb and it works a treat.I contacted O2 on day I received iPhone and cancelled my airtime contract and paid the phone in full.Didn't have to cancel my DD as O2 hadn't time to set it up.The trick is to cancel the airtime contract and buy the handset ASAP.You loose your O2 guarentee but have the full years Apple guarentee .
I'vealways found that you're referred back to Apple anyway.

If anything like the iphone 5 on O2 refresh its a 3 month warranty... :/. They gave 1 year and amended it to 3 months claiming because it's O2 refurb it only comes with the standard 3 months warranty that O2 refurb phones get.

It is for the standard iPhone 6 not plus

I've not voted either way but I'm quite sure there was a deal posted yesterday for the iPhone 6 Plus 64GB version, brand new from SmartFoneStore for £450.

As per my other reply, the £29pm is the airtime charge on top of the handset charge. Pay up the handset and cancel to avoid the airtime charges

21 Jul 15 #10
I can't see where the £10 tariff is - the only one with £209 up front is £30 odd
yehehehes to justhelping
21 Jul 15 #15
The £29pm is the airtime charge (pay up the device plan and cancel this so you wont have to pay any of this). The monthly charge for the handset is £10 (on the same line where the upfront charge is listed).

So is the idea I ring up and cancel the £29 a month sim, and they charge me 24x £10 for the rest of the handset?

I can not see these prices OP?
yehehehes to Aeschylus
21 Jul 15 #13
When the tariffs come up, select show more and then select the 10GB tariff (as an example for 128GB device) with the £149.99 upfront. The device plan will show you the £15 monthly device plan. Similar steps for the other two sizes.

Do these come locked?

Not sure but they should unlock it if requested once you've paid off the handset.
