I have the smaller Philips Air Fryer and it's OK.
I've never had any luck making crisp chips from scratch (they always come out soggy), but it works really well for:
- Frozen oven chips (cooks them in half the time vs oven or grill, and really even cooking)
- Baked potato (make sure you cook in the microwave first, and then crisp up the skin in the Air Fryer)
- Bacon (12 minutes for perfect crispy bacon)

its in effect a mini convection oven. my microwave / normal oven does the same except half way through you have to 'stir' the chips or whatever is being cooked.
adding oil helps for that 'fried' effect but its not necessary.

These types of fryers are great. I use mine ( different make )all the time and prefer the chips cooked by hot air. They work better than an oven due to the close proximity of the hot air, crimping the outside of the chips better. I love adding a spoon of groundnut oil as I find the taste improves the chips even more and seems to give them a great colour. Highly recommended people try hot air chips

11 Jun 152#28
The halogen ovens use a halogen lamp to heat the food in the oven as well as using hot circulating air. So food tends to cook faster on top (where it "sees" the halogen) than underneath it and means that you tend to need to turn food over like you would under a grill.
The air fryers don't have the direct heat source and rely on circulating hot air at a higher speed. The higher speed helps to spread the oil droplets around the oven too. The "indirect" heating means that food cooks more evenly and you need to turn food less (if at all).
You can cook chips in a halogen oven but it's a bit of a faff - google it to see a lot of demonstrations - mostly from sellers of halogen ovens.

I have the Philips one and it looks like identical to this Lidl one apart from a few cosmetics. All the controls are the same and in the same place. Cooks oven chips in 2/3rds of the time of a fan oven without having to be preheated. Does them lovely too, very crisp on the outside. I also have a halogen oven which is just a big fan blowing heat round but that doesn't fry stuff anywhere near as good or quick as the airfryer.
I never add any oil unless using regular home made chips from potatoes and that's just a faff so just buy frozen ones. Good for scampi and party food like spring rolls or samosas too.
Good for when you get in hammered from the pub too. Chips in 15 mins and you don't burn the house down when you fall asleep as it's on a timer.

I see from your numerous messages you have a Phillips, you paid £75 and are very happy with it. Obscessing about how it compares with this, a Lidl product which costs considerably less is not helpful. Obviously the service you receive and the quality of the product is somewhat dependent on price, but speaking anecdotally I have several Lidl electrical products, some several years old, and although they may not be the best are at worst very servicable.

You made yourself look like a total *!*!, you managed to miss everything and get all your facts wrong...
I only pointed out you failed to mention if your post had any relevance with the question of the poster you seemed to answer, as he was worried about the way Lidl deal with warranties, and indeed it seems you had zero experience with that.
I never said I got mine for 75, you seem to have a tendency to see things that do not exist and miss the obvious that do exist. I got mine for £65.75.
I only posted 3 times, not sure why you think I posted "numerous times" and that I am obsessing about something... out of the 3 posts, 2 were totally unrelated to my device, made no mention of my device...
So you got all aggressive just because I asked you if you returned your product under the 30 day returns window or actually had a fault and had to use their warranty... wow... from that to build up such an aberration of a post. You should really be worried about your social and comprehension skills.
Nobody asked you what is your opinion on the leel of service you should receive for a certain price, just if you returned a product at Lidl under the warranty and had the same excruciating experience as the other guy. I buy there all the time but never had to return something under the warranty, I'll definitely buy less know that I know they use the "pro-rata" trick like eBuyer and it takes them so long to deal with your case.
Also nobody asked you anything about the level of self-serviceability of Lidl products, no relevance what so ever, and even if one product was, there is no guarantee another would, for instance, if your LIDL fan heater is serviceable, good for you, no relevance to a TV or an air-fryer...
I'll actually post one time more as someone asked me a follow up question and I am trying to help... hope that doesn't make you too (barking) mad?
MaximusRo
12 Jun 15#57
You definitely have the 30 days no quibble return with Lidl, but not sure how they would deal with something like this, that might have residual grease on it if used. Although they do not really check the box when you return something...
patg2005
12 Jun 15#58
I wasn't being aggresive, just pointing out that you already own an air fryer ( which is not generally available at £66.75, so is irrelevant)...so endlessly going on about Lidl's return policy without adding anyyhing useful to the discussion is pointless. And if you think using flowery language instead of concise English is impressive...think again!

Do Lidl treat own brand items different to other items? So is it that Silvercrest they tend to refund and other manufacturers they would refer you to the manufacturers?
On a side note, I checked the receipt I was issued yesterday from Lidl for the Air Fyrer I purchased... It is no at all legible. Seems the ink did nit print in large strip going down the middle. So my warranty will be worthless without proof of purchase. Will have to make another trip today to sort out my proof of purchase. Not happy!

Well i got one yesterday and i love it! I tested it on frozen chips, stuffed chicken breasts, and sausages this morning. All cooked perfectly and in a fraction of the time usually in my oven. I can see this getting a stupid amount of use and my oven already has been relegated to second place. Being Objective i'd say the basket isn't huge so for a family it may be a problem. For myself as a single guy its perfect.

Had this product 2 weeks now and thought I should share some thoughts. It's works very well, however.. The Decal printing on the top rubbed off, it's really hard to see the white arrow on white turn knob to set minutes, its also not very accurate at "pinging" at the 0 marker, I use an electronic timer instead now, just turning the knob to give a little more time than the minutes suggest.
Also be very careful when you take out the basket holder, the underside is metal and extremely hot! , I've bought a heat resistant slab to place in front of the fryer to sit the basket holder.
The above niggles aren't serious, I'm enjoying the fryer, but they are shoddy mistakes. Manufactures would be aware of these kind of issues quite quickly, it makes me wonder if "Silvercrest" is a brand for slightly shoddy products sourced with known faults that can be sold cheap. This is based on quite a few of that brand's products that have had similar issues.
As for returns, not all items can be taken back to the stores for a refund. I've had to contact by letter the German offices for some products, they have mostly resent a replacement item in the post. Its a bit of a hassle. One I bought some Silvercrest Hair Trimmers, the rechargeable battery would run out with in 5 minutes desite starting with a full charge and the display saying 60 min remaining. They got replaced, yet where exactly them same, which then got replaced a third time and yet again the same issue. I'm am a little weary of Silvercrest now, you won't have these issues with a proper branded product.

The Philips is a better machine for sure. I have the Silvercrest and have family with the Philips and so this is my opinion based on having used both.
It all depends what you pay for any of these machines as all is relative to price / value for money.
Philips currently £70 but the ActiveFry was just on offer for under £50 just moments ago. That was the deal of the year I'd say.
