Decent price but be warned the motherboard is super low end and not very good like most of these pre-built PCs.

It's still perfectly fine for gaming. A high end motherboard will only give you overclocking and extra expandability. My gaming system has a similar board.

Could you then change the motherboard and fit another graphics card or overclock it?

Can you change the motherboard then to overclock it or add Gpu's/Ram etc?

A motherboard can hold back a system enormously. I used to run an FX8350 on a Asrock 970 Extreme 3 and the board held it back so much. Tried the same setup with a Crosshair V and it was an incredible difference.

how so? i dont see how switching the board would improve performance. i can only imagine the only advantage out og the box being higher bus speeds for ram which have almost no impact on games and as someone else said overclocking. i think you must have had another problem. maybe a faulty board or thermal throttling or something or other

Good price and setup. I have recently built a new PC for gaming using a i5 4460, MSI z97 gaming 3 motherboard, 8gb ram, gtx660, cx600m PSU...seeing much better performance compared to my old c2q6700 setup. I will be changing the gtx660 for a gtx970 in the future when it gets a bit cheaper...I chose the MSI z97 gaming 3 motherboard because I got it on a good flubit offer :stuck_out_tongue:

+£80 for Windows OS (unless you're prepared to take the risk of a pirated copy).

Good gaming spec, though for this sort of money ~ £700, I'd rather buy a lightweight gaming laptop (i7 / GTX 850m etc) for the greater versatility.

Gaming laptops are never the same as a desktop though. Plus their price detonates as does their performance a lot more rapidly than a desktop

At least with a desktop you can resell the parts after

Windows isn't £80. You can usually pick up a legit key for Windows 8.1 for around £20 from g2a which will be entitled (along with Win 7 & 8, even pirated ones) to a free upgrade to Windows 10 in July.
Judging by that free upgrade offer from MS I assume they want everyone on Windows 10, so can't imagine a license for that costing much come July... my guess is around £40-45.

And 'a good gaming laptop', seriously? Lots of people interested in PC's don't care much at all about versatility, especially when that added versatility means you're trading substantial differences in terms of gaming experience, visuals and framerate...

That may be more ideal for you, but actually try comparing the 970 with the 850m and you will be blown away. Also mobile i7s are not ideal either unless they are quad core. A laptop with close to this spec for gaming will cost a lot more.

Anyone know what brand the RAM and Graphics card is? I've had a reference card before and it was very bad in terms of cooling.
thel33ter to Yat
10 May 15 1 #25
Card is probably either Palit or KFA2 as they are the cheapest 970 boards, both use a blower type cooler which is alright, its modelled off the Nvidia reference cooler which is excellent. The 970's run so cool it doesn't matter all that much anyway.

RAM is likely to be Team, although this makes very little difference since you ain't gonna be overclocking anything on this board.

I appreciate the budget motherboard lacks a lot of features like fast M2, SATA Express, a better sound chip/codec, well isolated headphone amp, more than 16GB of memory, overclocking features for a K series CPU upgrade at a later date, etc, etc, etc but then that would make the price of the rig less competitive; at least they haven't done what so many companies do and fitted a cheap and cheerful power supply. I am as much for building your own as the next person and though with pre-builts you often have the frustration of being stuck with the 1 year warranty of the usually non-retail box OEM components inside, for the specification that you are getting, here, I think it's a cracking deal for a pre-built. Hot.

CampGareth
10 May 15 1 #41
So you switched chipsets and that made a massive improvement... I am not surprised by this? Actually I kinda am surprised looking at the specs, a 970 vs a 990FX doesn't look like much of a jump except in number of PCI-E lanes which would make a difference if you were using four cards at once or something.

This is where Intel's system has an advantage, nearly everything that matters for system performance is on the CPU with the exception of the southbridge (ethernet, SATA, audio, probably something else I'm forgetting) so there is no performance difference between a cheap and expensive board except overclocking support.

Seconded there, 850M is quite nice but it isn't a power house. I'm looking at upgrading from a big gaming laptop to a desktop, my dual 680Ms while they cost something like £1500 two years ago get clobbered by a single 980 (25-33% better). Desktop over laptop wherever possible (i.e. where a mini ITX computer is portable enough).

If you are stupid to buy keys from g2a then more fool you. Most keys from that place are bought in from Russia or MSDN. That's why people have so many issues with keys being locked out or not allowed to register the keys due to being region locked.

Unbranded RAM - Anything that never states a make and model should make you shudder.

Careful on the case - its MATX only so if you do finally decide that the board is poor (which it is) then you cant fit a nommal ATX board.

Freshtech have a very poor reputation as a system builder, plenty of poor reviews around about them, hence why you only get a years warranty. Expect cable management to look like a 5 tear old has done it and minimal testing before its shifted out the door. There has to be corner cutting in order to flog cheap custom PC's.

Naturally, as most will say, build your own then you know its tested properly and you can use a decent case, RAM and Motherboard. (nothing against Fractal Design here, they are very good, just get something that does not limit upgrades - you will keep your case for many upgrades if its good enough). For those that don't have the time or know how then stick with a decent system builder. You wouldn't buy a Ferrari from a back street car dealer would you?

Oh and for the record, Palit have come on very well in the last few Nvidia generations of GPU - Top 3 brand for reliability although their support is dire in the UK, but then if you have a system builder with a good warranty then you wouldn't have to worry......oh wait!

11 May 15 #63
I've had many different RAM configurations in the past but never had a failing stick, not ever. Everything seems to fail before the RAM hense why most well-known manufacturers give you a "life-time limited warranty" lol.
The last thing I'd worry about is what name is on the RAM.
That's just my opinion though.
I'd be more worried about the motherboard.
xela333
11 May 15 #64
That makes no sense. That asrock board has plenty enough power phases to handle an 8350. It lists support for it, sound like you had a faulty board.

There will be no difference between the h81 board found in this system and a z97 in terms of performance.

11 May 15 #66
I have seen hundreds if not thousands of failed RAM sticks in my time. DOA or FOA RAM is probably around the 5-10%, even on the decent brands. "Unbranded", or if you like "unknown" RAM its a much higher rate. Often many do not know their RAM is up the spout, and I'm not talking about a few passes on memtest here. Lifetime warranty on RAM is all well enough until you cant find out where to RMA it, or if you are lucky find out you have to send it to the other side of the world for an exchange.

Deal for a straightforward gaming machine. Sensibly balanced system for the money.
Decent little case, psu not the best but adequate and 600W gives it some headroom so it won't work too hard, basic but perfectly good mobo, 7200rpm, 8GB RAM (even if unbranded). 970 etc. Can add SSD later if bothered. Games inc. too.
But 'Overclocking Potential' - err no. If you want to OC, start with a different mobo, psu, cpu ...
Gets my vote as hard to do better for the cash.

11 May 15 #81
The boards hold back the high end AMD chips much more due to their high power draw. In this case though it really isn't an issue, provided you don't intend on overclocking you won't notice a low end board on a current Intel processor.

jukkie to gigan1994
11 May 15 1 #88
Why? the stock cooler will work perfectly fine on this CPU. It's not as if they'll be doing any overclocking.
A 212 EVO is certainly overkill for that CPU, so if you did want 3rd party cooling (for noise issues, more than heat) there are cheaper options.

Utter nonsense, I've built budget gaming PC's on H81 boards (even overclocked Intel G3258's to 4.3Ghz on them without any issues), and performance is comparable to higher end boards...

Is there a catch to this? I built my own PC so I don't care about this, but at a glance this is an amazing price with a great GPU, which is usually what they skip out on to profit off it past paying what they would from the suppliers instead of retail price for parts. How are they profiting off this? 600 quid sounds about right for even building it yourself, give or take a few quid.

I've tried that several times in the past. In fact, i think my current OS drive is on it's 3rd new PC. However, you will most likely be asked to re-submit a valid license key. It can, yes, absolutely, but for video editing and encoding, if that was your primary use and you want to minimise the time spent, you would ideally want as much memory as you could afford and the upper limit with that budget motherboard is 16GB. It's not clear to me looking at the spec whether freshtech have fitted 2 x 4GB sticks or 1 x 8GB but there are only two memory slots. Also, though it would up the budget and isn't an option available, here, ideally for video encoding/editing you want an I7 for its hyperthreading. That's assuming you are video encoding and editing all hours; if video encoding/editing is just an occasional thing, you will probably be happy with that PC, especially if at some point you upgrade to 16GB of memory.

Bought one of these 2 weeks ago at £595 and am very impressed with the overall build. I would normally self build but was paying more for a similar spec. I did find as someone has previously mentioned the cable management inside the case was poor, so I had to sort that out myself, but it wasn't a big deal as I was putting an SSD in anyway. The stock cooler for the 4460 is a little loud but keeps the temperature at a reasonable level under heavy load. I found the service from FreshTech really good. They called me to confirm my address the day after I ordered and the PC turned up the next working day. All in all I may order from them again, if the deal was good, however it is always worrying finding pages like this on a legitimate site:

Some of the reviews of this company's PCs are terrible EG parts failing early, bad customer support, etc., I definitely wouldn't buy from them.

Looking on Amazon too, the ultra-low number of reviews for their products is very suspicious imo. Besides one product with 18 and another with 11, all the rest have only 1, 2 or 3 reviews - why so few? Well examining one with only 2 reviews I can see why - one of the two reviews reported it was dead on arrival so no wonder they can't leave reviews up, instead I suspect re-listing new items all the time to hide all the bad reviews and avoid anyone noticing the bad points. It's not cheap if it's not going to last, but each to their own.

I'd be interested to hear about reliability/breakdowns/problems from any Freshtech owners who've had their PCs for 2+ years.
wah0007
13 May 15 #130
I wonder if they're using proper ESD protection when building these computers as that can also be the reason for components failing early. Someone on here mentioned that they bought from these guys and the cable management was poor, it makes you wonder about the quality.

14 May 15 #136
Bought one a few weeks back, put in a 120GB SSD for OS and put on Windows 7 and it works well. I mentioned previously the cable management was poor but I redid it when I put the SSD in anyway. I ordered on Thursday night about 5.30 and it came Tuesday morning at 10.30 but the Monday was a bank holiday.

The Motherboard is very basic, 2 RAM slots no space for a 2nd graphics card for SLI so depending on what you want to do in the future this may be an issue. If you are going to swap out components such as replace the graphics card, add more RAM, etc should be ok, however if you want to add in additional Graphics card or overclock the processor you would need a new Motherboard and probably a new PSU too, so could get pricey.

Hope this helps.

Anyone else got a verdict on this deal? I'm really wanting to bite the bullet on this one, but I'm not sure if it has only been voted HOT because of the killer price or if it is a quality deal. Any help here?

wah0007 to jeffmorris
18 May 15 1 #142
It is a quality deal. Some people are only concerned about reliability.

There's a lot of youtube reviews about Freshtec solutions, you should watch them and see what people have to say about them. There's mixed reviews.
JoeyJoeC
18 May 15 #143
I added the same spec to eBuyer, and I got £570 for the same specs.
This is a good price since it's built, but the branding for the parts isn't going to be great. The MB would probably be a big bottle neck with performance.

If I needed a PC for sub £600, I would get a better MB, and go for an AMD CPU for its value for performance. SSD would have to be a must for the OS. Also I love the feeling of when everything comes in the post and I get to build it myself.
jeffmorris to JoeyJoeC
18 May 15 #145
Hope you don't mind me asking, but do you actually think the motherboard will be a bottle neck? Only asking this because it is quite concerning if it will be.

JoeyJoeC
18 May 15 #146
Knew I shouldn't have wrote about the bottle neck as I can't find anything to back me up. I bought a similar Gigabyte budget board for my dad, just had a lot of issues with it, very slow rendering times with adobe premier. With the same specs, we went for an MSI Z97-GD65 with the same i5 and it was performing much better.

If you plan on adding more ram in the future, don't get this board as it has only got 2 Memory slots.

Or you could try using a product key of another laptop or PC in your household. When you phone up to activate windows it asks you how many computers you're using the key on, so you could enter 2 and see if it lets you activate it.

I was going to buy this but after reading some of the google reviews for the seller it put me off, one mentioned receiving the computer with lesser components than what was advertised.. maybe its just a one off but I can't be bothered taking the risk. someone posted this deal on here recently (cant find the link) but for a little more it has a much better motherboard, faster ram and the site has much better reviews:

I ended up purchasing this deal from Freshtech the other day just before I seen the one you're mentioning here. I've had a good, long hard think about it and I have decided that the difference in the 2 is minimal.

Motherboard can also be changed in the future when needed, and the RAM is plenty fast at 1600MHz. And I'm sure Freshtech will want to do their best to make sure you recommend to friends
Tweaty1982 to lardinator
20 May 15 1 #163
box ebay account is full of negative responses . You may want to check them out before purchasing just a precaution. Also the PSU is only a VS model and it uses both memory slots on the board where as freshtech use a single stick 1 x 8gb module giving you the option to upgrade to 16gb a lot easier should you require it - Seems a lot of happy customers who purchased from Freshtech but no one yet to purchase from Box ?

I wonder if this can handle Ultra settings on 1440p? or even high settings on 4k, 30fps min is good enough for me..not worrying too much about fps unless its a first person shooter like bf4
JohnWayne_
12 Jun 15 #202
Wonder if it can handle Batman/Witcher/Bf4 in ultra/1440p settings or even high/4k at a min of 30fps? Not too concered about fps for those type of games...for shooters like bf4 60fps minimum I guess since im used to ps4's fps on these kinda games
JohnWayne_
12 Jun 15 #203
Could you get ultra/1440p with decent fps or 4k/30fps on those games? If not then might have to invest in a new motherboard that can support SLI incase I'd want another gpu in future

Why does it do that!!! first it doesnt send my messages because theyre flagged then I have to retype them and then it sends all of them! lol
gigan1994
12 Jun 15 #205
I have only played up to 1080p as that is the resolution of my current monitor. 1440p should be fine on high settings but with 4K you'll need to turn everything down to low due needing more VRAM. If you need to play games at 4k i'd recommend waiting for the 980TI
JohnWayne_
12 Jun 15 #206
Or could you replace the motherboard so it could support SLI?
wah0007
12 Jun 15 #207
I've only played on high-ultra settings on GTA V @ 1080p with the 970 and it doesn't always hold 60fps solid. So, 1440p will have more trouble getting decent fps. 4k is out of the question.
JohnWayne_
13 Jun 15 #208
Im used to ps4's 30fps 1080p which is completely fine with me and even Witcher which always drops to below 30fps so to get 1440p high/ultra with a minimum 30fps would be great
wah0007
13 Jun 15 #209
It will run better than 30fps @ 1440p as you might not need to enable anti aliasing, but with 4k I think it'll be unplayable. You should be good to go at 1440p though.

Not too sure, you'll have to ask if they'll do that, as they might charge a bit extra to swap them. Plus, the card may be bigger so may not fit in this case, It depends on compatibility too.

Don't worry about it lol

EDIT:

970 G1 card size: "L=312mm, W=129mm, H=43mm"

Graphics card size support by case: "Supports graphic card up to 350mm in length with one HDD mounted
Supports graphic card up to 210mm in length with two/three HDD mounted"

thegamingkinginfo to scottydoo88

This *should* be fine for that but depending on how many monitors you have, resolution and the game you play could cause it to lag a bit. The graphics card is fine, great for streaming and gaming. The i5 4460 might be alright but its better to do some research before buying. 8GB of ram should be fine too but depends on what you use and play.

It's just a lot to learn with PC compared to console gaming. Would be using one monitor for the game and 2 other monitors for stream related programs. I was hoping to get the right PC for around the £500 mark.
