Seeing as it seems Capital One (and Luma) are stopping cashback from next month on their credit cards, it seems worth it to remind everyone of this product.

For people who have a Halifax Reward account and are getting their free £5s each month, spending £300 in a month on a Clarity credit card (and pay it off in full to avoid interest!) gets a £5 reward on the card account.

This means an essential return of 1.7% on the spend.

Note: this used to be two seperate products, the Clarity Reward vs Clarity standard, now it's just one product, and the reward should automatically activate for current account holders.

11.2 - To be eligible for the reward set out in condition 11.1, you must, at the time you enter into this agreement:-

(a) hold a Halifax current account and pay in £1,000 or more each month;
(b) use our switching service to move your current account to a Halifax Current Account and agree to pay in £1,000 or more each month;
(c) open or hold a Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account.

Is there a limit to the amount of cheddar I can purchase per month. Or can I spend the full £300 on pre-sliced packs?
wingman0401
2 Apr 15 3 #42
Certainly was the case about three/four years ago, but things have really changed up recently. I pretty much use mine exclusively across the board for all of our spending. Certainly the main supermarkets, garages and big name retailers accept them. It's more often than not nowadays that I'm surprised a retailer doesn't accept Amex, rather than does.

My current cashback is at £170.00 and rising - I'll get that back as either a lump sum against my card in June or 110% in Currys/Waterstones vouchers.

Paypal is hooked up to my Amex too, so there's a loophole for retailers that don't accept Amex but do accept PayPal :smiley:

Biggest annoyances for me are Aldi and Caffe Nero :disappointed:

A good deal with tailored bonus rewards like 10% off at Morrisons; as well as great for using on holiday.
(I have made just under £40 in bonus credits).
A few conditions though.

It clearly states you must have a rewards or ultimate rewards current account to qualify.... I can't actually find a link to apply for a "reward" clarity card on the Halifax site though... anyone else?

"...open or hold a Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account."

So you need their £15 a month current account to qualify.

You DO get £5/month for this card PLUS £5/month for depositing £750/month into the current account, I have 2 x cards (mine & wifey) plus 1 x account which equates to £180 per annum free money.

2 Apr 15 #22
I have just opened a Clarity card by telephone. The clarity card is sometimes referred to as the reward / ultimate but there is only one card----the 'Clarity'. It requires £1,000 p.m. to be paid in rather than the £750 required for the Reward current account. The reward was confirmed at £5 p.m. providing £300 spent in previous month.
dt_matthews
2 Apr 15 #23
I assume you mean the Ultimate Reward Current Account requires £1000 deposit per month?
billbennett1 to dt_matthews
2 Apr 15 #24
No, there's no deposit requirement to hold an Ultimate, because you pay for it. The free Reward account requires the monthly deposit.

I get £10 a month for using this with the ultimate reward. So it costs me £5pm for travel & phone insurance. Then the clarity one works well for use abroad aswell.

You can have more than one credit card with Halifax, nice lady told me this when I got my Clarity, they're very helpful on the phone, I'd ring unless there's online cashback to consider.

2 Apr 15 #33
Hmmm I never knew Capitalone are ditching their cashback! :disappointed: Had that for years too, looks like I wont be using it very much from now on.

I use my Capitalone card to pay for everything just because of the cashback (even the council tax). I also have the Halifax card which is good but being limited to £5 cashback. Incidentally another big perk of the Halifax card is that it's great for travelling, you can take cash out from machines abroad without transaction charges, you only pay the interest which works out cheap if you pay it off when you return to the UK, you get the Mastercard exchange rate which has always been better than exchanging cash anywhere I've been.

2 Apr 15 #35
Annoying about the capital one end of cashback I've got a 4% luma card and 1% normal cashback capital one card. I guess I earn about £25 on the 1% card per year and maybe £50 on the 4% card so about £75 in total. I already have this clarity reward card so will just have to switch to it and cancel the capital one cards I guess. Is the £5 automatic or do you have to check with Halifax to ensure its correctly set up?

2 Apr 15 #41
Nice, might just go for this then to replace my cards which lost cashback last November. I spend approx. half the £300 on diesel every month anyway, looked at my average monthly spend on my card a little while ago, and months when I am trying to limit spend I still get over £300. It is either this or the Clubcard credit card for me I think. Do some more reading this weekend to check which will be best for me.

Capital One cards may be worth keeping though. I've had mine for years and not used it in a while, and had no low usage charge. Apparently it works in your favour on a credit check if they see you have a long-standing relationship with a company, so I'll be keeping mine purely for this. I probably should spend a little on it every now and then and have it paid off in full via Direct Debit though.
bonzobanana to anewman
2 Apr 15 #51
But if you don't use it and lets say have a credit limit of £5,000 that shows you already have that amount of credit open to you. Doesn't your credit rating go down if you have too much credit available? I'll close both of mine as there is also the greater risk of fraud too.
tallpete33
2 Apr 15 #44
This could work out ok if you max it out to £300 and then put all other purchases on another cashback card. Currently using M&S for 0.5% (plus bonus vouchers) since the amazon card stopped giving cashback. I found the Amex no good for general use also - ok for supermarkets etc but not for independent retailers/hotels

I've been doing this for almost a year now. I was reluctant to agree to a credit card and hadn't owned one before this (I'm 30!) but I'm glad I got it as it's easy to pay off using online banking, there's the cashback and additional benefit of not being charged in europe for withdrawals/chip &pin payments too.

You don't need an ultimate reward card for this, just a standard reward card is fine. It's also accepted in a lot more places than it used to be. Mine always goes on holiday with me for emergencies.

2 Apr 15 #55
Just to make you aware - me and my wife have totally 3 Halifax reward accounts (2 single and 1 joint) and 2 Halifax credit cards. So in total could get £300 per year. But we do not use hfx credit cards as have been using other credit cards which have 0% for purchases.
waqasahmed
2 Apr 15 #56
Tbf, it's still useful for buying stuff in foreign currencies ie: when buying stuff abroad or on eBay.com when I purchase in USD. I didnt know theyre stopping cashback tho :disappointed:

Guess there's Nationwide select to go back to, and to get rid of both my Capital ones if this is the case :disappointed:

Or I might go for the Aqua card, purely because they give cashback on ALL purchases, and not just payments in GBP. As well as noddle premium. Hmm

And Santander 123, because I spend more than £300/month and tbh, after the fee, I think Santander is around the same amount in cashback!

Get rid of Asda if Im getting a Santander 123 ofc...

Three cards shall become two, so there's that at least...

Now if only Santander offered the same "commission free" perk like Nationwide and Aqua...
waqasahmed
2 Apr 15 1 #57
Doesnt look like it. You simply need to "pay in £1000/month" it appears...

2 Apr 15 #58
Yes, Paypal is a great loophole.
Biggest annoyance for myself is not being able to pay my Council Tax by either AMEX or Paypal. £1000+ spend there!
Hope it changes and soon.

waqasahmed
2 Apr 15 1 #61
Course. Personally, not QUITE sure how much I spend "online" vs "offline" The Aqua card and Nationwide select are looking appealing atm, for your bog standard 0.5% cashback + no commission to use worldwide. This being said, Id have to spend between £300/month and £1000/month on "miscellaneous" stuff for the Halifax clarity to be worth doing!! (ie: At £1000 you get 0.5% cashback effectively and at £300, you get 1.66% cashback effectively)

I could not close one of my cards, and see exactly how much I spend on "miscellaneous" stuff tho!
backinstock
2 Apr 15 #62
I'd be more than happy when (if ever) they accept AMEX. lol
If they offered a decent discount, I'd pay the full year upfront. I refuse to pay via DD now as I get cashback on another credit card. Crazy system, but work it to suit yourself.

My online application for Clarity was rejected because I already held a credit card with Halifax (which I wasn't aware of!). I had a Halifax credit card 6 months ago that had been paid off in full and requested to be closed, it was actually 2p in credit so they couldn't close it.

Despite being in credit on the other card (and pending closure) the nice person on the phone told me you can not have 2 halifax credit cards.

That's unfortunate, I rang to ask if I could convert my existing Halifax credit card to a Clarity and she asked if I wanted it in addition, I said I thought you can't have two (I think I had read that on here somewhere) and she said no that changed recently. This was maybe 6 weeks ago? I currently have the two cards now but thinking of closing the original as I don't use it.

shame to hear Capital one Luma ending. But suppose loss leading 4% cash back had to end at some point on fuel n supermarket spends.

Rung capital 1 & can confirm complete closure of cashback. FYI, it will end in June and any cashback earned thus far will be paid then - you will not have to wait until your year end.

2 Apr 15 1 #80
This is due to an EU cap on card processing fees:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-31812810

Currently credit card providers receive an interchange fee for each transaction which averages around 0.8%. This will soon be capped at 0.3% which makes providing cashback at 0.5% or 1% unviable. Amex as a third party card scheme isn't caught by the cap but they might be forced to reduce their fees through competition.

Silly question alert, but I have the card now and downloaded the banking app, but it appears the only way I can pay my balance at any point through the app (regardless of having a dd set up) is to have a current account with Halifax. I haven't received my first statement yet, but wanted an indication from those of you that have it whether this is correct as it seems pretty lame.

Of course I could of walked into a Halifax and asked, but I'm here now!

You have to hold an ultimate reward current account OR hold reward current account and pay in £1000 per month, as well as spend £300 on purchases on your clarity credit card to receive £5 reward payment. You also receive £5 per month from the reward current account if u pay in £750 and have 2 different direct debits going out monthly... £120 per year... not including cashbook extras offer they do

does it matter how often you get credit cards? I've just got an amex platinum card. Thats 3 credit cards I have in total (always paid off in time so never accrued any bad debt). Is there any downside to me getting this? I really need to switch from my post office master card as its a pain to pay off and theres no rewards, so this Halifax one will do the job as I'm already banking with them

it's all and well with cashback, open a Halifax account if want crappy security, I left halifax with bitter experience. open a Santander 123 account, you will surprise yourself with cashback, it's got £2 fee a month, and got to have minimum of £3000 in your current account, santander got better fraud awareness than Halifax.

I have a reward account which needs 2 dd's set up and then you just move £1000 in total every month to get £5 following month.

I also have the clarity and spend £300 or more on anything get £5 back every month on statement.

but its also one of the best cards for using abroad as rates are great mastercard rates and there are no loading fees or conversion fees, it saved me loads when I go abroad and carry less cash.

Just to echo what other posters have said, I too have this card (had it around six years now, along with the current a/c) & it is terrific for avoiding foreign exchange fees. Great for eBay or buying things from Amazon.de / Amazon.com etc. Made £120 p/year for the last six years off this and the current account.

Sounds like they've pulled the plug as they have no way of preventing those without a reward current account applying. I suspect this will lead to it being a case of the branch says you need an ULTIMATE Reward Current Account, and those with the plain old Reward will be asked to upgrade.

5 Apr 15 #93
Halifax will probably cancel this £5 payment shortly anyway but if you set up a new credit card can they change the terms and conditions within a year? Just wondered if new people getting the card are guaranteed to get the £5 for a certain amount of time. This won't apply to me as I've had the card over a year anyway.

Clearly cashback from credit cards is going to take a hit from most companies it's just Capital One are first to react. Probably a bad move from Capital One as many will close their accounts to go elsewhere only to find a few month's later those cards also reduce their cashback anyway.

On a different note, Capital One used to have excellent customer service but recently it seems to have gone down the pan. When dealing with a charge dispute I've been sent letters that make no sense at all with clearly made up information that they couldn't back up. It's become a bit of a farce. It's very strange indeed. It was only for a very small amount but I've lost confidence in them. However it was always free to contact them be it secure online messages or 0800 numbers. Halifax I think make contact even more difficult with only chargeable calls and no online messaging.

Thanks for any clarification

Another thread revival, but I wanted to check if the £5 credit for £300 spends was still available?

Certainly the Halifax Clarity T&Cs that are still on their website seem to suggest that it's ongoing. Annoyingly, I've had this card for years, but have only had a £750 credit going into the account, so may have been missing out by the looks of it!

I've just come across this ongoing thread. There seems to be a bit of uncertainty as to the qualifying criteria - understandable as they are a bit confusing at first.

Here are the terms and conditions for a Halifax Clarity Credit Card linked to a Halifax Reward Current account relevant to benefiting from a monthly £5 reward from each of them.

11.1 - If you meet the requirements set out in condition 11.2, then for any statement period in which you:-

(a) make at least £300 of Purchases (once any Purchases refunded in that period have been deducted);
(b) stay within your credit limit; and
(c) make your minimum monthly payment;

you will qualify for a £5 credit to your account in the following month. The credit will not be treated as a payment to your account under these conditions.
11.2 - To be eligible for the reward set out in condition 11.1, you must, at the time you enter into this agreement:-

(a) hold a Halifax current account and pay in £1,000 or more each month;
(b) use our switching service to move your current account to a Halifax Current Account and agree to pay in £1,000 or more each month;
(c) open or hold a Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account.

If you have the regular Clarity Credit Card and the standard Reward Current Account all you need do is call Halifax on 0345-944-4555 or 01733-573189 to have your credit card changed to a Clarity Reward card.

The key aspects - you must pay in £1000 monthly (minimum) into your Reward Current Account, have 2 x Direct Debits (you already need these anyway for the current account reward) and make a minimum of £300 purchases on your credit card.

You do not require to hold an Ultimate Reward Current Account, or have to upgrade to one to qualify.
