But at £165 I would probably spend just that bit more and get something like a Nexus 5

Agree, the specs are different on critical things like dual sim and SD card slot if that's wha you want.
Nexus 5 was just an example but I'm sure the user experience and support would be vastly superior with the Nexus 5.

I bought a Tronsmart TS7 myself from Geekbuying. I'm cool with buying a mobile from Far East but it's it's got to be a phenomenal saving for me before I do. If it's marginally cheaper to a UK market comparable then I wouldn't bother IMO

If you go for a phone like this - get one that has some following on XDA as it will be forgotten even sooner than Samsung, LG, etc. forget about their phones. You'd be lucky if you get 1-2 updates before that's it.

The android authority review seems pretty genuine and the battery capacity does seem to be correct based on the power draw of this SoC and LCD.
http://www.androidauthority.com/review-of-thl-5000-410058/

This is probably just (relatively) new battery tech making its way to market http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/174477-at-long-last-new-lithium-battery-tech-actually-arrives-on-the-market-and-might-already-be-in-your-smartphone
These far east companies don't have to worry about the battery lasting only 12-24 months or providing replacements.

Makes me wonder what this battery could do with a better SoC and more efficient display!

FYI for things like video watching you'd probably get similar battery life out of something like a Note 3. The Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G is one of the best for battery life if you're willing to take the spec hit.

27 Sep 14 2 #43
I love all the people saying the battery capacity isn't true, THL are a very well renowned Chinese manufacturer and just because you don't believe things doesn't mean they're not true.
pibpob to fix
27 Sep 14 1 #45
Don't you think that if this were as good as claimed, the likes of Apple and Samsung wouldn't have jumped on it already?

I think jacksonliam's on to it: I guess as the manufacturer doesn't have to worry about anyone returning it under warranty, they can just do what others don't - discharge the battery beyond its safe limits, thereby yielding extra capacity but reducing its life. I doubt it'll last two years. Bear in mind that the extremetech article only talks about a current 20% improvement, so if it's any more than 20% smaller volume than any other 5Ah cell then they're telling porkies and/or abusing it.

I've bought this phone from antelife.com. comes rooted. So removing Chinese apps isn't a problem. Charging is fast. I got it within 3 days, dhl to the UK. Its a great phone. Lots of Roms out there on needrom.com. for the price its stunning. I'm a heavy user and I get around 3 days battery usage. Heck even the camera is good as far as camera phones go. A lot lies and misinformation on this thread guys. This is an amazing phone for the price and a not a thing wrong with it. The big guys need to take note. This has better build quality and arguably the number one seller, decent Roms and great battery life.

I bought a THL W300 Phone last year, which is a 6.5" beast.

I was a bit anxious about how it would turn out as it was quite a gamble and the phone cost a good £225 at the time.

However I've used this phone for almost a year now and my general overview is the phone is good quality.

The only problems I've encountered with the phone are:
1) The phone is dual sim, if you don't have a SIM in the second port the phone randomly locks itself (ie you have to type your PIN to continue with what you were doing). This was very frustrating for the first week but thankfully after I inserted the second SIM this issue disappeared.

2) The camera ocassionally crashes the phone. This is a battery removal job, but it is rare. I've probably had it happen less than 10 times in the year.

3) The phone will reboot on occasions for no known reason. This is also rare and I've only noticed it less than a dozen times over the year.

So I think overall the phone is well worth the money. Thankfully it comes with a leather case which has kept it protected, from all the nicks and cuts on the case I'm very glad to have it. The screen protector is also essential although my application has left a few air bubbles which I can live with.

So overall I would say THL phones are pretty decent. My experience with another brand, STAR N9599 for example was much poorer and I would not recommend that phone.

I've grown accustomed to the 6.5" phone so now I'm worried I won't be able to upgrade my 6.5" with another phone of the same size as it seems they've given up on that form factor and nothing is bigger than 5.7".

Can anyone tell me how the frequency will affect us in the UK. As its 850 and not 900

Will it mean slower 3g speeds? I'm on the three network.

I've tried googling but their seems to be little info regarding frequencies
jaydeeuk1 to bauer
3 Oct 14 #74
I thought lower frequencies like 900 are better for penetrating buildings than higher frequencies, so without it you'll probably get naff all signal inside on three. (I'm on three too). Happy to be corrected, but its why I've never gone for one of these types of phones from DX (that an DX are utter crooks that shouldn't be allowed on here, but thats another story)
paul.crome to bauer
5 Oct 14 #130
Not sure about 3 but Vodafone runs 3G over 900 in my area so 3G will simply not work. Some networks are ok. You need to go to the ofcom website and look at the mast info for your area. A lot of people ordering this will be very disappointed. Shame as it's a great phone for the money. Best bang for buck on the market IMHO.

You might be trying to leave a positive impression (and believe this to be a decent phone), but having had at least 22 notable incidents in less than a year isn't the slightest bit reassuring!
If I had more than a single reboot (or indeed one!) in a year with my phone, I'd immediately be concerned about the reliability.

well I bought my MTK Chinese phone 2 years ago, the battery stated 3000mh, it use to last 3 days whit light use, whit really really heavy usage 20-26 hour, now after 2 years I got 2 days light use, so far I runned out of battery far only once within a day.

I don't have one of these phones, but being a sucker for watching various "teardown" videos of phones and tablets, I've seen the size of various high capacity batteries, and this one to be the capacity it claims, would need to be a monster..........
As for cheap Chinese quality, the brand new iPhone6 only costs £140 to put out the door (with the larger 6plus costing only a tenner more) so you CAN get decent spec phones at a low price - as long as the manufacturer doesn't rip the pi$$ with its profit margins, a la Apple.

Contacted a few Chinese Sellers recently there seems to be a delay in the postal and customs service, many quoting an extra 2weeks delivery time! Mixed reviews over octa-core vs latest Qualcomm snapdragons, most apps do not utilise 8 cores yet. 4g does work with them but needs separate chip. Far better deal is the zte z7 mini which I will soon order after the postal delay passes. If you still want octa-core the lenovo a806 is 4g. THL are known for big batteries which is great if you get annoyed with charging everyday.

I was looking at the THL 5000 as the massive battery seemed attractive, but user reviews said the battery life wasn't as stellar as the specs would suggest.

I went instead with the Kingzone K1 Turbo. I've had it for 3 weeks so far and it's been excellent. Apart from the shakey bluetooth (drops every 4-5 minutes.. apparently a known problem hopefully getting sorted), the screen (vivid and bright), GPS (quick to lock and accurate), sound (from rear speaker and ear piece are both excellent), speed, and battery life are great. I've rooted mine, added 'Boosters Plus Battery Saver pro', and easily get 2 days from the phone. Heavy use (stream movies, autobrightness, wifi) I get about 5 hours on screen time, moderate use 1 full day and leftovers for the 2nd, light use I get 2 days and go to bed at 35% on the second day.

Sorry to ramble, but just another option for those looking at well specced, this price range, China-phones! The K1 ships from Germany for £172 (I received mine in 3 days)

Another viewpoint/pair of eyes for the seemingly Blind-Blinded and not for challenging any entity.

Mobiles made for the Chinese markets are spec-ed differently from mobiles for “Western” markets. This difference not only equates to the pricing/gouging-by-all-and-sundry, but also major niggles like “Google Play Store”, Gen-4/LTE, 0.935GB/3.08GB “Retinous Slowbug” RAM, etc.. As such, although Chinese targetted mobiles might be accomodated to Western tastes via “rooting”, they are invariable never 100% portable. For that, one has to weigh the balance between the gouged price and the portability/use-ability. Many Chinese enterprises are lanching products solely for Western markets albeit a learning curve has to be overcome with the in-between Mama-Papas doing a roaring trade for products too cheap to complain about or those that fit-in nicely. Then, the next learning curve is the support part. You cannot have pidgin Engrish support and run a Western-orientated business successfully in the long run. The Chinese knows that.

For those being compromised by price/the-gouging, the Chinese named-brands like Huawei or ZTE are worth investigating although the DNA of Downtown TelAviv-Kiev will be invested in there too. You know, the Greed-Fear factor factored into the Blind-Blinded who assume their ability to gouge is a privilege and an indication of being chosened. Just look at the specs for, say, the ZTE Nubia 7 Mini. Makes you wonder why, that for the smallish price differential, THL couldn’t have up the spec a little. There always being a reason for human Thought/Duality-of-Behaviour, perhaps ours is never to reason why other than to buy and regret. Caveat Empot. In addition, HUKD has become a bazaar for anything from Heaven to Da Mama-Papas posing as Da Next Best Thang to Godliness. Witness Da Worshipfuls of the UK disease variety, oka Dr Who, What & Where, and their penchant to worship given the slightest excuse. Afterall, when Eets soo Moneysupamarket is able to wrangle the odd £gazillions from Speculators/DeafNDumb, HUKD eyes are ablazed with Eet. Dat Ams Eets, that is.

I just wanted to people to think closely about buying anything THL based on my own experiences.

I picked up a W200 last year and it's become nothing short of a whole catalog of problems. Firstly within days bright white hot spots started showing up on my screen. Next, the hard case it came with fell apart within a week. The plastic kept snapping and cracking off and that's from someone who's never even dropped a phone before.

Some time later I had the infamous "cannot connect to camera" error. Had to strip down and reassemble my phones camera connector to fix this. Even now it's not perfect, and I still get the error forcing me to replace the battery if I want to take a shot. Not very convienent is it, wanting to take a selfie with friends and explaining to them you have to remove your battery first and then reboot. They'll love the THL tune too, which you're subjected to each time you reboot.

We're not done yet. You'll randomly find it feeling very hot, turn it on and your battery has run down from 90% down to 27%. And whatever you do, do NOT let the LED indicator be left flashing. That'll also cause it to overheat and die too if left long enough.

Then there's the battery life. It is atrocious. It's about 26hr on standby. In use 2-3 max.

As for the THL 5000. WATCH OUT. I've been reading from XDA the newest batch have a very poor LCD with dull fading colors and poor contrast. Google it if you don't believe me.

Here's what I suspect suspect THL like to do. Ship out the first batch with good parts and components. Let the good reviews roll in so that people are suckered in. Then shortly after, switch newer batches to inferior components. Very sneaky and nasty.

Watch out.

The one thing which matters to me when buying a phone is how the dev scene is shaping up.

ZTE Z7 mini. Available for around £180 delivered. (FHD 5" display, dual 4g sim support, quad core 2ghz Snapdragon 801 processor, 2gb ram, 16gb storage, micro sd card support, OTG, 13mp rear, 5mp front, supports google play when installed). Great reviews and selling like hot cakes...not available in Europe yet...

Please note however buying chinese phones there are sometimes problems with 4g support, do check frequencies. When researching i am yet to find a chinese phone (not available for sale in EU) which guarantees run on 800/2100/2600, most only on 2100/2600. Meaning you can only use 4g with EE and three so far. Some claim the 800 frequency has better range and coverage, there is debate over this and how much it will be utilised. At the moment 4g coverage is pretty spotty and mainly only cities where you should be fine whatever the frequency.

If you are not very tech savy i would not recommend chinese phones, many need language changes with new roms, as well as google play installed which can be tricky, some need to be rooted to do this...voiding the warranty. At the moment it is hard to beat the moto G's. But for the more tech savy there are some great deals with some risk in the chinese market, plenty of developer support for the major chinese brands.

I have a similar chinese dual sim phone, best phone I ever owned and has been rock solid both in build quality and reliability for 2 years now. Probably wouldn't buy a major brand phone again with all the preloaded junk they put on them.
iliko
4 Oct 14 #113
Did you buy this phone from DX.com or something else? If you bought other phone from alibaba.com it is not related. You can not generalise your views on China made phone just here simply because even some of the best phones in the world are made in China nowadays.
iliko
4 Oct 14 #114
First of all ZTE is not the same price, and second of all THL is 8-core CPU not Quad! and that is a BIG difference. ZTE screen, is it IPS, is it Gorilla Glass? Battery 3100 mAh vs. 5000mAh. Hmmm really, why should I buy ZTE and pay more?
pibpob
4 Oct 14 #115
"Chinese" is an unfortunate catch-all term used by the ignorant to describe any phone not made by a big brand.
MaximusRo to pibpob
4 Oct 14 1 #121
Can you think of a better one for phones designed for the chinese market (they come with "chinese" apps, I will let you explain this yet another catch-all term), a lot of times missing the radio bands used in the UK, missing Google Apps (banned by the Chinese government), and not sold (and supported) anywhere else in Europe? Would you really classify an Android phone that comes without Google Play app installed as just normal or would you class it as a Chinese phone because only the Chinese government banned Google Apss? We take it for granted, Android = Google Play, Google Maps, Google that and this.

They are also produced by companies that are completely unknown outside China. THL is a good example, but there are some even more exotic.

I would also refer you to comment #105 for more on this.

but this really is a Chinese made phone !!!! Jesus Christ

4 Oct 14 #116
There's not really a big difference. It's not a processor that's twice as fast unless the software is using all those cores, and most appllcations won't take advantage of this.
iliko
4 Oct 14 #117
That is true and as hardware grows bigger the apps using all those cores will emerge very soon especially the games. On the other hand why should I pay more for less cores?
iliko
4 Oct 14 #118
Just found in another website:

"Android is basically built upon Linux kernel which does utilize mulit-core. As far as single-threaded-application is concerned, remember that a thread can not be executed in-parts on different cores simultaneously. So although your single-thread can be executed by different cores at different point in times, it can not be sub-divided and executed by different cores at the same time.

Having said that, please be aware that chipset manufacturers like Qualcomm are developing intelligent processors capable of sub-dividing your single-threaded app into multiple threads and have it run on different cores. Here again, the basic principle remains same - in order to utilize multi-core, the single thread was sub-divided into multiple threads.

To get the most out of your multi-core chip, you would rather create a multi-threaded app, with maximum possible asynchronous threads, so as to have optimum utilization of maximum number of cores. Hope this clears.

EDIT:

This also translates to - An app that does not make use of multiple asynchronous threads (or any other parallelism construct) will NOT use more than one core."
jacksonliam to iliko
4 Oct 14 #119
But android is a multitasking operating system. You can run multiple apps and they can be all doing things at once. Not to mention all the background tasks you can have going on.
Android app design guidelines, for a long time, have had a focus of pushing taks off the UI thead and onto background threads.

Yes, a quad core with a higher clock speed or better architecture would likely make more of a noticable impact than adding four more cores, but it does make some impact.

Also worth noting is the 'race to rest' - the method of saving battery life by having the processor completing tasks faster so it can clock down into a low power mode quicker.

No, I think Chinese phones is self explanatory enough.
You had a problem with that so you should have come up with a different term. Which you weren't capable of doing...

in fact bought from eBay. but it does not matter where I bought from because they were genuine THL phones not fakes. I am not generalizing my view on Chinese phones. my view is based on my experience of the thl brand

I am aware of branded goods being made in China. but they use superior materials and you pay the price.

So what exactly went wrong? Why didn't you return it? You need to be more specific here and preferably around this model, this merchant and this price.

6 Oct 14 #134
Sorry you are right it is not the same price but maybe still within a similar budget for people considering this phone. No its not gorilla glass, yes it is IPS. I was interested in the lenovo A806 (£130) myself drawn to the 8 mediatek processor but have decided to wait for future developments with this chip. It was just an alternative option maybe someone might want to look into.

True the ZTE only has quad core........this is not a big difference in terms of overall performance of the phone (benchmarks in reviews). I did not go into a comparison versus number of cores as they are different chips by different brands. It is more comparable if in fact they were both mediatek chips then it could be a fair comparison. There are mixed reviews over the performance of the 8 core mediatek processors and to me it seems like they have been pushed out too early and do not have components to match there potential. Therefore more of a sales push and effectively bottlenecking devices. I am sure they will have advantages in the future but for now the snapdragon chips have lower power consumption (no larger batteries needed) and much better integration with other chipsets enabling fast gps, stable wifi, faster memory support, smoother graphics and intregated 4g.

I say this with respect. I have owned a phone shop for many years and I make phones my business. Trust me when I say this. The current chinese phones from THL, Jiayu and and many others have better build quality than sammy or HTC - by miles. I would even argue better cameras.

thl phone industrial design feeling okay. Many new models are beautiful, the quality is relatively stable. W3 family with dual-core version. Price is fairly affordable, simple trial a few days, to run smoothly, it should be no problem. Test run points more than in 5000, the Internet is no Caton and crashes, playing the game a little hot, but compared to other similar machines Andrews, accessories are good, the screen resolution saturation are very good. Life long. If there is any shortage, I think the point of the thin plastic cover, if it is metal, then fine.

Had my THL5000 for 18 months now. Still a great phone.
Only one hardware problem was the speaker went crackly. I'm ok with electronics (needed two tiny wires soldering), so a £8 new speaker direct from THL and it has been fine since. The screen can be a bit picky about being clean and seems like the screen is unresponsive when lots of greasy fingerprints are on it. A good clean with proper degreasing screen cleaner and its fine. Battery life superb. So Bang for buck - great phone.
