Well as long as you keep them away from reach, then yes they are quite safe. But if you plan to have it on all time, then I would consider hiding wiring and power adapter. Also connection should be insulated, because it easily comes apart (we dont want kids touching it do we?). Really you have to make it safe for your kid. Additional 6A fuse after power supply would be good idea too (just in case controller blows).
These led strips are really nice and can be fitted almost everywhere, but power supply is another story. Over time capacitors bulk up and it fails to provide enough power. So if you plan to have really long strip (you can attach more strips, then a proper 12V supply would be ideal investment.
You can fit this in your kitchen at your own risk. Strip itself is silicone coated so its splashproof, but connections, adapter, supply are not....

Question for any electricians on here... Are these safe to use in the home and to leave connected to a socket permanently ???
They seem good value and I am just thinking of getting some for my sons bedroom.

Yes you can used it permanently but you have to make permanent sticking solution where you want to stick .. because manufacturer glue is not sufficient to stay permanently.. i have to used adhesive tape to stick in my bedroom

I already have 2 sets of these and plan on getting more. They are perfectly safe to use in the home and to leave connected to a socket. They run through a 12V DC converter into a IR controller into a 3 pin led reel. One thing I found though is the stickiness of the glue used isn't suitable to all surfaces so if you use a bonding adhesive you know its going to stay where you put it so make sure you get it right 1st time... I have mine connected to my mp3 doorbell so when people ring the bell I have my own little disco go off to the music played.

Yes you can used it in kitchen but have to prevent the bottom from water because ..some kind of glue tape which stick ..at the bottom of strip.

I've got a couple of kits, one really old one that's been in continuous use for years. With these, the strips and the controller are the safest parts, the weak point as far as safety goes is the power supply. The included power supply will be suspect especially at this price point. Your better off using a better power supply for peace of mind, any 12v 1.5amp or better will do. On mine I use an old Motorola cable modem power supply.
Anthonis to freakstyler
15 Jul 141#6
I would argue 12V 1.5A option, coz original power supply is 12V 2A. Controller supports up to 6A. So really you need power supply from 2A to +-7A. Anything below 2A will just put power supply on its max and produce heat if you will have LED strip on its max output.

15 Jul 14#29
Dum-dum question, but is one set okay for two separate kitchen cupboard units?
Well you could argue that. The power supply included will be generic and very over rated. There will be no comparison with a branded power brick, the 1.5amp power supply I've used runs a 5m RGB 5050 LED strip producing white effortlessly, it runs warm but never gets hot - its 9 years old and has a lot of weight to it. On another note I've ran a 600 3528 white LED strip from an old Virgin Superhub power supply without issue. Lots of people have old power adapters laying around from discarded tech, an old modem/router or whatever power supply even if its slightly underrated will be a safer bet than what they include in these kits.

I bought these and have them set on the back of my wall mounted tv. I paid about £16 for them and they another £5 odd for extra connectors and joints and extenders etc. They look great. Colours are bright and changeable. I have so many comments about them. Well worth the £20 I paid and for £10 this is a great price.
Anthonis
15 Jul 14#10
That's because you have old transformer power supply, which are almost unkillable  new switched power supplies use transistors to downgrade voltage, so produce a lot heat and capacitors usually just dry out. In any case you can even use 1A power supply, but trouble is that it wont be as bright as it would be with 2A power supply.... Its like flashlight whilst batteries are new its nice and bright, but when they run out it becomes more dimmer and dimmer.... Things like cameras, tv's etc wont even start up if there is not enough current from power supply....
Than again its up to you what to use. I just said that better more power than less....
freakstyler
15 Jul 14#11
I agree, more amps is better but its not critical for something like this. I've had no issues myself and the adapter I've been using is a switching Delta power supply, it's not an old school brick of a transformer - its a thin thing just slightly bigger than a cigarette packet with a figure 8 mains cable.

I have these on the back of my TV too, great for reducing eye strain.
I also have some in my car under the footwells so passengers can see at night, they run off the centre light so dim with the rest of the lights.
2 Things I would mention;
If you are going to cut them and join them, do it with solder. The joining kits you can buy on ebay don't make a tight enough grip and can cause the lights to stop working/flicker, easy job if you're handy with a soldering iron.
And
The remote unit on mine is sensitive to my 'Volume up' button on my Yamaha amp and whenever I turn the volume up the lights change to yellow. I have now set the lights to my preferred colour and put the IR receiver behind the TV to stop it changing.

15 Jul 14#57
Hey, I have had these in various places for years, the effect is great, though please be aware that the cheaper sets of 'RGB' strips usually consist of seperate, red, green and blue LEDs rather than many RGB LEDs, they still look great, but if the strip itself is going to be in a place where it is visible rather than just the light they put out, it may not give you the desired effect. (for example, when the strip is 'white' it is actually just equal levels of red, green and blue). Hope this helps someone.

Id like to break one strip into 3 pieces (1x above units and 2x down lighing in frosted glass cupboards. Is this possible?

Yes you can cut every 3 LEDs if I remember correctly. The connections I bought are from eBay and amazon. Loads of options and I didn't bother to solder then as they are stable enough for me.

Sorry, voted cold. The lights are not worth £1, let alone £20. Retrofit LED strips's...give me a break. As somebody that works within the lighting industry for a global leader in lighting controls and luminaires, these LED strips are shocking. Will they be a safety hazard? No. Are they absolute crap, most definitely. I can go in to the in's and out's of why but il spare you the technical run down.
If it's just a bit of adhoc lighting to go on a garden gazebo, then fantastic. Even for Christmas, these have applications but as a permanent fixture it really is just an absolute waste,.
It's these sort of companies that are destroying the market with cheap chinese imports. There definitely needs to be more education in lighting out there, not just for contractors but the domestic user to.
I can also tell you right now that it's "claim" that they are used in hotels, shopping malls is utter garbage. DMX lights and the upcoming DALI Device Type 8 are the colours variants that are used in a commercial enviroment. They are easier to control and they can sit along side existing 1-10v or DALI systems.
If i could vote this cold 100 times over, i would. False advertisement!!!

I bought one of these from Amazon last year and have it under the cupboards above the bed in the bedroom. They're great.
I wouldn't trust the transformer that comes with it though. I had a similar one for a laptop that blew up and plenty of people on the Amazon reviews saying the transformer stopped working.
I bought a 50W 12V LED driver just to be on the safe side. I have a plugin power monitor and they use about 30W (as far as I remember) at full white brightness. Not much, maybe 9W if on a low brightness and coloured.
Also if the power turns off and comes back on the lights turn themselves back on.

Ended up biting. Arrived today. Was a bit confused at first as one end of the led strip was male and the other female. Connected the male into the female on the white box and voila all worked. As I thought the supplied power supply was cheap tat and made a horrendous buzzing sound when I turned the lights on. Used my own and they are silent whilst on. The sticky glue on the back of the strip is rubbish so the hardest part was placing them on the back of my tv. Have them on just now and even the wife likes them. Worth a tenner I'd say.

Shouldn't this be expired as the original price was £9.99 which everyone bought at. Now the seller has upped the cost to £10.99, which the op has changed the deal to.
If you want to buy at £9.99 bargainclickuk sells the same item

Has anyone bought the 10metre roll? Does it come as one single strip and does it power up fine from the provided power brick?
Cheers.

Here is a link to a downloadable pdf description of the remote control which is far better than the basic instructions included the lights.

Sorry for the bump.
I bought the 5050 white strip, but after a month of use they all have started going quite dim.
Thinking it may be the PSU, I connected a small section that I had cut off and these are as bright as new.
I take it these are just cheap Chinese tat???
Anyone else?

I bought the colour ones. Only issues I've had is a set of 3 LED's not working with green, and the controller providing the wrong colours pressed on the remote (They replaced it straight away)

And how does it compare to the Argos offering http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9258413.htm Atollo 4 Pack Linking LED Strips - Colour Changing at £44.99?
Than again its up to you what to use. I just said that better more power than less....
even cheaper !
I also have some in my car under the footwells so passengers can see at night, they run off the centre light so dim with the rest of the lights.
2 Things I would mention;
I want to use these outside, i have power leading to a waterproof junction box which powers a outdoor socket and a lamp stand.
I would need the entire wiring to sit outside and be powered from the existing junction box, how should i go about this? I assume i would need a waterproof enclosure for the power supply?
Also visited some other product which in description .. gr8 seller

I want cool white LED strips (which i know are available) but would prefer the option to pick colours too.
Im just wondering if the white on these are an off-white colour due to the mixture of RGB or if they look true cool white?
Thanks for any help!
Heat added. Although remember to check your calculations for rating etc before plumbing it all in. http://www.visualchillout.co.uk used to have an example freely available on the best ways to wire in repeaters etc. but unfortunately its now for their customers only :disappointed:
Id like to break one strip into 3 pieces (1x above units and 2x down lighing in frosted glass cupboards. Is this possible?
Are there connectors just to join in-line with 6-12" of wire? I know they can potentially be soldered but tried a few years back and the copper pads just melted off!
Note sure if this will work but this is a snap of mine and some of the colours

Once again not from that buyer.
This maybe a stupid question but 5m is wayyyy to long, is it possible to cut it?
oh right, thanks
i just got a huge HD projector which is amazing for my gaming and films but thinking of replacing my 47" with a 4k soon
Ordered! thx!:sunglasses:
I want to have a few connected to a fuse spur connected to a light switch.
what about you ??
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141088380269?clk_rvr_id=667022667442
I wouldn't trust the transformer that comes with it though. I had a similar one for a laptop that blew up and plenty of people on the Amazon reviews saying the transformer stopped working.
I bought a 50W 12V LED driver just to be on the safe side. I have a plugin power monitor and they use about 30W (as far as I remember) at full white brightness. Not much, maybe 9W if on a low brightness and coloured.
Also if the power turns off and comes back on the lights turn themselves back on.
My friend has these around the the bottom of his kitchen units easy to install and look really great. His also changes colour to music / sound hope this answers some of your questions.
Anyone recommend a safer option?
It could be missing but have a good look in the box, it may be there.
Remote is not very sensitive but definitely value for money.
I agree with comments regarding instructions but it is very basic to set up.
Would definitely buy again... Thank you

Yeah, no I made sure I did that as I saw they had to be lined up - fair play to the seller, emailed last night, reply this morning to say a new IR and remote had been sent out to me! In a way that makes it seem like it might be a common issue so they just send out replacements straightaway or on the other hand they are just great with Customer Service :-)
Did you bother with the 90 degree connectors or just bend the LED strip ?
Also, did you use all the LED's or cut it down to size ?
Cheers
