Just picked up a set of these in Lidl as one of their new offers, and must say very impressed for the price. For those that don't know what these are, they essentially a set of screwdrivers for working on electrical installations etc, which are VDE/DIN rated, meaning the insulation offers protection upto 1000v, so for most people working with 240v these offer plenty of protection, or at least 5 of them do, the mains tester screwdriver is safe between 125v - 250v only, not 1000v.If you've not heard of VDE, then I don't wish to sound rude, but you probably shouldn't be buying these, let alone using them, electricity is not something to mess with unless you what you're doing, and even then the wiring in a typical house can throw up a few surprises, so you can never make assumptions.
Anyway, advice over, here's the blurb from their website..

Voltage Tester (screwdriver) I wouldn't use this, if my life depended on it.
Use an approved voltage indicator and proving unit to GS38 standards.

I would agree, I bought the set for the VDE screwdrivers.Infact I didn't notice it had a mains tester until I unboxed, although I will use it when doing light switches probably.

I always let the wife do the electrical jobs. She will be fine with a poundland set of screwdrivers, if not, I have her well insured!

I've never used a proving unit and looking up the price I know why. Just make sure you test your voltage indicator on a known live source before and after you test the circuit you are intending to work on.
I've heard the stories about these testers but have never had a problem using them, however I have various voltage indicators at home, some contact some non-contact. Just don't rely on a multimeter it's too easy to be fooled.
Good price for the screwdriver set, whatever you do with the tester.

Absolutely correct chuck the mains tester in the bin and never use it. They were banned in our organisation.

Throw the mains tester away, it is a potentially lethal piece of kit.
They should be banned from sale as they serve no practical use, that a safer option can't fulfill.
