I have worked for the NHS for nearly ten years and in the last couple of years I have become aware of discounts that NHS staff can get on certain services, some are good, some are not so good and some are downright great.
The discounts for mobile phone contracts are not limited to NHS staff, however they are limited to the particular providers list of corporate partners, and they vary from provider to provider. I will try to list the companies that I am aware participate in these schemes however as I have set this thread up mainly as an NHS staff thread I will be focussing on the discounts provided to those staff.
I have taken some time to find out the list of available benefits for Staff employed by the NHS and am now passing on this information, a lot of the information has been gleaned from various websites, forums and my own finding over the years. I hesitate to call this a mega thread however the list is all that I am aware of. I realise that this will not be of use to everybody, however as the nation’s biggest employer it will surely help some and that is the reason for this post.
Please don't vote cold simply because the discount does not apply to you, or if your vote is based on any political agenda (pensions etc.). Some of the companies (e.g. Vodafone) even allow you to add up to five of your friends and family members for the discount and are not exclusive to NHS staff; however for the benefit of this post I am focussing mainly on the NHS discounts provided. The other participating companies for mobile discounts can be found in post #2.
Remember to always ask retailers and always carry some form of NHS employment id, you never know.
There are websites that specifically deals with discounts for service staff including, but not limited to: www.healthservicediscounts.com (formerly nhsdiscounts) www.bluelightcard.com (all emergency services) www.psdiscounts.com (all public sector employees)
However this is not ideal for me and doesn't seem to list discounts that they do not get affiliate links for, therefore in the real world I have found that it hasn't been much use to me. They do however offer discount on gift cards for most major retailers, saving up to 10% on purchases if you have the foresight to purchase them in advance. I’m not including deals on these websites as they are all quite easy to find, the information I am offering isn’t commonly posted together and most of my colleagues are unaware of them.
I have taken quite a lot of time to find out the list of available benefits for Staff employed by the NHS and am now passing on this information
I am hoping that others may also know some information that I don't and that we can create a pool of information that will help others out.

CHILDCARE
Computershare (formerly Busybees) offer a scheme where you can pay for nursery fees directly from your pay prior to income tax being deducted meaning you save paying tax on the payments for childcare (you will need to speak to you HR advisor with regards to this)
(thanks to adi0604) Most nurseries would accept Childcare payments (formerly vouchers). Which is bought by employer from service providers. Employer deducts the cost (upper limit applies) from gross salaries of employee and saves NI on it.
This scheme is due to change in 2015 to a system slightly less beneficial to the employee, it has to do with the way tax is deducted from your salary.

I think you will find that the overwhelming majority of NHS workers are very hard working people, thanks for your valuable input though; keep it up.
I find it nice to be linked to asylum seekers and benefits claimants, keep this attitude up next time you are required to visit A&E and you will see how easy the frontline staff have things.

This isn't about salaries, pensions etc. it's simply about existing offers for nhs staff.
In real terms my salary has been cut by £2000 and I've not had a penny increase (even inflation), I'm worse off financially than I was four years ago.
But you know what, I don't care because I love my job and helping people is what I chose to do. Nobody made me and the benefits were never in my thinking.
I'm a frontline nhs nurse who works in an environment where I get threatened and abused daily, and there is a very real threat of serious assault in my line of work.
If you disagree with the schemes that are in place then don't post, please don't insult your fellow man who like us all is struggling through this financial climate.
If you benefit from this thread then I'm very happy for you, if you don't then ask your own companies HR if yours do any benefits.
You never know

Completely out of touch and clinging to your Daily Mail newspaper I'm sure.
Those thousands of people who were killed in Stafford Hospital and who were lying in hospital beds were treated like that due to a culture of targets SET BY THE GOVERNMENT and insufficient nurses & resources, and was due to the systematic failure across all levels particularly management not the majority of hard working nurses and doctors and other clinicians.
Working for the NHS is one of the toughest jobs there is, resources are so tight, you want to care but you are often overcome with unnecessary bureaucracy and government intervention when they have no idea how a Hospital should be run and works, it's pretty hard working for an organisation whose upper management (Government) wants to destroy it.
It wouldn't be feasible with the staffing levels there are now to have senior doctors & surgeons to work at weekends, there aren't enough nurses & doctors as it is in the NHS hence why unfortunately so many trusts rely on overpaid locums, the moaning of Cameron & co is just to create public angst against the NHS workers, that's all.
Oh, and GPs don't earn 200k a year, that's more **** peddling from the Daily Mail.
The NHS does fantastic work which goes unrecognised simply because it doesn't sell newspapers, there is of course room for improvement, but we have a better system than 99% of the countries in the world, try getting ill in USA and see how you fare.

Also note - many of these 'preferred' schemes (we have them at work) turn out *worse* than properly shopping around. Vodafone/apple/dell etc - you can find the same or better deals going through the various outlets which deal in them - eg mobile phone web sites, or ebay or tesco's etc.
The mobile phone deals you can get direct from vodafone/o2/orange are appallingly bad value, and a quick web search (and here on huk) will enlighten people so much more.

not unless you have an nhs id card. as most students don't get them just uni based cards. if yours has nhs on it - should work. hope that helps.
