50% off Spotidy Premium for students has been around for a while, but now there's no requirement to buy an NUS extra card, which usually cost £12 (if your uni doesn't provide one for free), if you sign up via unidays . Only works for students though as they require you to sign in to your uni via Shibboleth/OpenAthens.

It's a cracking deal for a student. I rather luckily get an NUS card through my previous employer as an Alumni (which is awesome), well worth the £5 a month for premium, tbh well worth the £10 a month if you are not a student.

Seems like it's valid for more than 12 months. You just have to verify again that you're a student to get another 12 months.
"Prior to the end of the Discount Periodyou may reactivate the Offer for an additional twelve (12) months period (“Extension Period") by again submitting your still valid Discount Records. You may only use your NUS Card or Unidays registration to get the Offer for one Spotify account." https://www.spotify.com/uk/legal/studentplan/

Thanks - you've just reminded me to cancel my Spotify subscription as I'm using Google Music these days instead! Good deal - Spotify is pretty awesome but Google Music pretty much offers the same functionality except through a web browser, is free to use on mobile devices and you can upload all your own music to it.

Don't think samsharp99 is implying he doesn't pay for google music. Just that it offers a similar (if not better for some) service than spotify, and is a little cheaper.

Excellent! I though £10 was a bit high, I managed to get another free trial which ends next week - £5 per month is a steal!
I think I'm going to give Google's play music trial a spin first though - just to compare.

Pff.. I tried spotify with student discount but then realized, hold on, I'm paying & still don't own the music? No wonder there is so much piracy going on.
What I do now is, create a spam acc every 30 days so I can take advantage of the 1 month free trial.

4 Sep 131#27
Hmm, it would be tempting if it wasn't still limited to 12 months (my previous discount has now expired). At least Music Unlimited is only £42/year (£3.50/mo) for now!
It's just a different business model. If you're not buying individual albums or singles then the artists need to make their money through a share in subscriptions. The advantage for the consumer is that you get full access to anything in the library, the disadvantage is that you never own a copy. Seems like a fair arrangement to me.

Can you get a free trial without giving them card details ?
(I might get and keep Spotify but I never try stuff that wants my card details).
Doesn't seem like if they do want them they would be so stupid as to let you use the same ones over and over again.

jk12324
4 Sep 13#47
The deal is that it's £5 cheaper than full price. I'm sure games or other products have been posted at the same price from different retailers and they all get hot and rightly so. An NUS card would cost a student money as well so in an indirect way, this deal is actually cheaper than that one.
I haven't voted yet but I'm gonna vote hot just to counter your bad excuse for a cold one...
Creatzy
5 Sep 13#48
Well this isn't a different retailer, and its always been this price from this retailer! As for purchasing an NUS card, Most students by them as the perks massively out way the cost of the card and they easily recoup there money back.
This is not a HOT deal IMO, It's been seen before by the same retailer at same cost that has never changed, this is just pointing out how you can obtain it differently for the same cost.
I couldn't care less how you vote
loopymeg
5 Sep 13#49
Well yes, unless the artist self-publishes. My point is that the artist will always suffer if you pirate your music, but they will at least get some form of remuneration regardless of whether you choose to purchase or lease your music (compared to pirating).

He could get an NUS card, then he would be entitled to half price subscriptions.
The UniDays method just makes it easier for university students as they can simply login to prove they are a student, as opposed to having an NUS card and number.

daboy10
5 Sep 13#59
Ok to those asking how I enter my details. I believe you can enter card details as well, but you can also use your paypal address if you want to which I do. So when you sign up, you'll have to go through a paypal check out process where the cost will be displayed 0 Pounds and a small text saying that after the 30 days trial x amount will be deducted from your account.
You agree and "pay" the 0 Pounds and you have Spotify Premium. It will tell you when your Trial will expire. You can then go to your account and cancel your premium subscription, and it will say, after the intial 30 day trial, no payment will be made from your Paypal account.
So you will have 30 Days premium and it will automatically expire in 30 days. Once it expires, create new account and the whole game repeats itself.

Yeah - I was on Spotify Unlimited for £5 a month and I've moved to the 30 day free trial of Google Music followed by £7.99 a month if you sign up before the 15th (I think?). So it's an extra £3 a month (or £2 cheaper than Spotify Premium) and it includes storing all of my offline music in the cloud and the ability to listen on mobile devices and anywhere with a web browser. The fact I can seamlessly listen to my own music from anywhere and music streamed through all access is pretty good.
Plus, if I decide I don't want to pay for it any more - all of my music (as long as it's less than 20,000 songs) is still available to listen/play through Google Music with no charge.
Listening to your own music is free under 20,000 of your own songs. If you want to stream / add music from the net then you have to either buy the albums/songs from the play store or pay the £7.99 a month for All Access - which allows you to listen to anything.
