Waitrose have improved their FREE newspaper offer on £5 spend for customers when you scan your MyWaitrose card:

- Now includes weekends, was previously just weekdays. Sunday newspapers cost between £1.50 to £2.50 so is a good saving.

- More newspapers titles are now included in the newspaper offer. Spend £5 on anything in Waitrose and get a free Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Scottish Daily Mail, Scottish Mail on Sunday, The Guardian or The Observer.

MyWaitrose Cards can be picked up in-store or ordered online for free

Ahhh.....the Guardian and the Observer at last.

Waitrose must have realised how offensive it was to a large part of their customer base for them to be dishing out free copies of that downmarket, trashy, poisonous little tabloid rag of a Daily Mail.

I don't think Wait rose even sell the Sunday Sport...

Not sure about the point of this offer. Who reads print newspapers any more? Who reads right wing rags? Well, looking at the Waitrose demographic (God's waiting room) perhaps my questions are answered.

You might be able to get free papers & coffee but what i'd like to know is why are their shelves nearly always empty for days on end, at least half the things on my shopping list are normally unavailable.
Useless & overpriced, better off going to Tesco

Nowadays "the computer says YES" in that the credit for including a qualifying newspaper in your £5.00+ spend is applied automatically by the till computer - albeit fairly slowly, and seems to be intelligently programmed as....

...today including the Saturday Guardian - which had gone up from £2.30 to £2.50 today - gave rise to a £2.50 myWaitrose credit on the bill

It's all clear on their website. You DONT get a free paper, you get the price of a qualifying newspaper deducted from your bill! So if you are using a subscription coupon to pay for the paper that's 100% valid!

I dare you to price check some common items across all Supermarkets. You will be amazed that Waitrose is not what it is said to be (and, as a matter of fact, used to be), a rip-off. The past few months they have the best prices among a wide range of common branded products. I think Sainsbury's have rightfully earned the 'rip-off' title. What a pity there is not a Waitrose store near me.

Re: is the price of the newspaper included in the £5?

This morning I had 4 things including the paper that totaled £5.15. £2.00 taken off for the off for the paper and I spent £3.15 on my credit card.

Last few weeks I've been taking the Saturday Guardian instead of the Telegraph. Frankly felt sorry for the environment (and my arm muscles) carting about 2 lb of paper away. The Saturday G is at least still a little bit lightweight.
Waitrose can be a bit slow to respond to new tech opportunities and this is no exception.
I want Waitrose to integrate their free newspaper voucher system into my iPad it would go like this:
1. Complete my £5 shop.
2. My receipt reminds my that an e-voucher for an e-copy of the paper is in My Waitrose account already.
3. Go home, open the Waitrose app, see the vouchered button to my edition of the paper. One touch...
4. ...opens the newspaper app and I'm allowed to read that day's edition.

There can be extra frills, first that comes to mind is, if it's late in the day you might wish to save the voucher for the following day.

The newspaper publishers ought to love this deal as it enables them to gain some reading metrics from Waitrose customers, do targeted advertising etc.

useful for wrapping up ice cream to keep it cold - can't beat old style.
I usually get a paper for the other half - I've no idea why anyone would want to read yesterday's "news" with editted bias - difficult enough to get something close to bare facts on the internet.
Anyone else find themselves about to pick up paper and a totally unaware person snatches it from you, 'cos they've legged it from the checkout when they've been asked if they want a free paper - not an excuse me, sorry or thankyou - hopefully my karma curses won't come true - I'd be worse than Dexter - next time I'll just wish them mild indigestion..
Can't get free drink anymore, queue is too long, daytime, evening and weekends.
Deal is hot though!

voted hot as it's a good offer but it's nothing new (at least for my local store, Winchester). the weekend newspapers were always available part of the offer (they used to have a panel with codes to scan now it's all automatically done). you can also grab a free coffee/tea part of this offer!

Its a free paper when you spend £5 inclusive of the paper. E.g. if the paper is £2.50 and you have £2.50 of goods. The total comes to £5 so the paper is free.

The good thing about Waitrose is the reduced stuff. Offers still go through. e.g. buy 2 save 50p. Reduced to 25. Buy 2 = 50p - 50p for buying two == free

Print Newspaper Offer
Spend £5 and receive money off your shopping when you buy selected newspapers.

How do I get money off my shopping?

Simply pick up your copy of The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Scottish Daily Mail, The Scottish Mail on Sunday, The Guardian or The Observer and swipe your myWaitrose card. The value of your newspaper will automatically be deducted from your shopping. You will need to spend £5 to qualify but this can include the price of the newspaper.

If you are paying for your shopping at Quick Check, make sure you scan the barcode of your chosen newspaper. You can then pay as normal at Quick Check and don’t forget
e web site DOES say it can include the price of the newspaper...perhaps staff should revise up on that!!.......

It looks like only one transaction per day on their website, ie one free newspaper. It's also not online, as someone asked, and in my experience, lol, it's not necessarily in store either unless you present your paper and waitrose card more or less at the same time, otherwise the assistant might not twig.

So it's not your usual form of offer, in that sometimes you get a free paper, sometimes not . They ought to put that in the ads.
"Free newspaper!
Maybe.
We'll see...
Depends how we feel.
It could be your lucky day...
Or not!
Byeee!"

an assistant recently suggested to me that i divide my shopping up into two £5 plus purchases and then i could get two free newspapers.

good idea - don't know if all assistants are amenable to the idea - tried it yesterday and got a guardian AND a mail.

also received thru the post 2 £10 vouchers off £30 shopping from waitrose after i hadn't shopped there for several weeks.

quite generous compared with a poxy £2 voucher off £40 which i received at morrissons recently.

My local Waitrose is still offering phenomenal discounts on short-dated stuff. When they reduce their "2 for" & "3 for" items, you still get the discount that would have applied at full price. I've had 10 pizzas for nothing in the past, + a free latte & a newspaper. I won't hear a bad word said against them, especially now I can get a free Guardian or Observer!

Waitrose have extended the offer to include The Guardian / Observer which are hardly the papers of choice for right wingers.

So all this talk about you only being able to get a right wing paper (Mail/Telegraph) is now out of date.

I imagine they selected those two initially because they are the highest selling Broadsheet and the highest selling mid-market tabloid by quite some margin. That means they are the most "popular" papers in their markets and have the largest readerships. The choice of these titles will therefore have been for reasons far removed from political bias.

The Guardian and Observer sell a fraction of the other titles but Waitrose have been clever enough to realise that accommodating these two gives their left leaning customers a chance of partaking in the offer.

They will know from internal statistics which shifts the most but to be honest Waitrose customers don't tend to be so "skint" that they can't afford a newspaper. I imagine most baskets (or trolleys) don't even bother with the offer. The free drinks offer is probably more popular but again people seem to buy what they fancy in the restaurant.

If this is the case (I have no reason to doubt it!) Waitrose need to be much more careful about how they describe this offer. In this weekend's Waitrose Weekend the box advertising the offer has in the small print
..."£5 spend must include a qualifying newspaper."

I'm sure the intention is not to deliberately mislead, but I struggle to read that in any way other than the cost of the newspaper is INCLUDED in the £5 spend, and it is a real stretch to read it as £5 net spend, which appears to be how staff are effectively presenting it.

Once I get the website to stop giving me errors I'll try and make that point via a web message to customer services.

Ah, good, waitrose card is more or less useless ( deduct a penny from your shopping) so this come as a nice surprise. Also why is it that people consider a Daily Mail as a right wing newspaper? Agree with most of staff there. Hm, in that case I might have a right wing views....it couldn't be...or...
SensitiveBagel to alisonrd

It deducts more, it just depends on what you buy. However, the minimum is 1p on almost everything excluding cigarettes (I think).
liltman to alisonrd
3 Jul 13 1 #18
It doesn't just do that, the penny thing is just how the system works.
Every time you use your myWaitrose card you have a chance to win your months shopping back.

So let's say you spent £200 that month, you have a chance to win that back in vouchers. Essentially making it a free shop.

I work for them and now get called to check out from time to time.

As described on the website:

Monthly winners
Each month, in every shop, one cardholder will win back the value of their whole month’s shopping. And every month one customer will win a full year’s worth of Waitrose groceries. Simply use your myWaitrose card every time you shop with us in branch or online for your chance to win.

Also, for more information you can read here: http://www.waitrose.com/home/mywaitrose/AboutmyWaitrose.html

I'm going to alternate between The Guardian and The Telegraph in a vain attempt to land somewhere near the truth.

EDIT: agree with the above comment, I frequently have had to keep staff right regarding this offer. Also, they seem to have started dishing out the free tea/coffee in 'special' size cups for card holders which is fair enough I suppose but it does make me feel slightly cheapskate!

Good bonus with real newspaper at last, but DO remember to check it really DOES get deducted from your shopping.

Historically it isn't the computer that says 'free', it's the Waitrose staff member realising you're after the offer & remembering to scan an extra offer barcode; at least a couple of times they haven't and required adjustment/extra hassle-time for all after.
