Nice troll, This is a great phone. I still use a iphone 3g and only now is it getting too old for me, not everyone wants to pay an extra £240 over the contract to get a 'quad core' and higher resolution screen when they don't need it.

Anyone still using this tariff and got bumped down to 40gb a month from June 2017?

Oh that is a shame , I had a feeling that something might be a catch , I genuinely think on my 350mb tariff that most of the time the speed is more than useable and seems to have slightly got better over time but I guess it would be capped on an unlimited tariff. I guess with networks heavily advertising 4g even 3 who used to get rave reviews are starting to have complaints about speeds due to the way it is managed.
Gavin01
1 Jul 15 #1043
speed was dire for me even when i had a full 3g signal, the sim card stayed in my door for nearly 2 years as it was pointless.

also got voda fone phones for some one else and also pants.

They seem to be a long way off from the market leader they used to be.

I know this is a long time off but how was/is the tariff ,are the speeds capped in any way ?
Having purchased a contract prior and after this I missed out on this and despite phoning Talkmobile several times can't get on the unlimited data booster which is shame . I bought anothet contract on Talkmobile (redemption deal) which I have to say gives decent speeds but I have always wanted unlimited data !

My phone came back from HTC - with once again...a Polish main board.
That pushed me over the edge and I finally complained about the poor quality of the phone, the frequency I'd returned the phone to them, the fact I'd probably not had the phone in my possession for approx. 3 months of the time I've had it, the cock ups they've done or rather not done in fixing my phone.

I'm getting a HTC One Mini sent out now in place of the HTC One S. Specs very similar - apart from the camera is of a lower quality, but I can't argue with that (as long as that doesn't have faults - I'm not even googling for any!)

Still think the one s holds it own against most today. Im sure the screen was better than my s4

I just rang up again about this, the guy told me they no longer do an unlimited tariff and the only way to keep it is to leave it running. He also said as it was unlimited, they had no way of seeing how much data I had used.

All they could offer me was a Samsung Galaxy S3 for £16.50 a month with 250 mins, 5000 txtx and 500mb data. With 1gb of data it was £26!

Why did they say you would be better off taking a new contract to get anything better?? Depending on how you use the tariff, £16 is a very good deal. They just wanted you off it! My contravt finished 16th june, but i will just let it roll on.

Well...I went into CPW and they pretty much said that there was "no upgrade" to this deal...asked three CPW stores. They all said I'd be better taking out a brand new number/ new contract to get anything decent. So i went to EE through HUKD goonertillidie posting and got my daughter the iPhone 5C 16GB (free) on 24m at £23.99 from EE...gets unlimited minutes / unlimited texts / 2GB data (capped). Not a bad deal....she tends to use wifi where available and the 2GB is capped so there should be no surprises :innocent:
Good luck to others who try to "upgrade" (p.s. YOU NEED TO GIVE 30 DAYS NOTICE TO END YOUR CONTRACT!) :smirk:

My HTC One S Is once again back at HTC :disappointed:
To be fair, to their credit....the last replacement phone (my 4th) fixed the original issue. However it was an Eastern European main board - which I thought was alright (having to choose English-Polish as the language was odd though, until I realised some sites were blocking my access as I was in the wrong region, and my Nielson Reward Points app wouldn't work either.

HTC have acknowledged all my previous bother though, and a senior tech is apparently working on my phone.

5 times a charm eh?

I'd like to know if anyone has been offered a decent 'upgrade' ? They rang me a couple of weeks ago and offered me a rubbish deal for a £15 that was for a Galaxy Ace and 500mb of data! I said that phone was inferior to my 2 year old One S. No mention of the contract continuing etc so not sure what will happen?

I've also got 2 of the Xperia U £7.50 a month deals that were on at the same time.

Hi I'm intesrested in what they will offer after the contract ends
As well maybe just SIM onlybas handset ok for now
Re handset had a few problems in the first few months with mainly softwear faults which were swiftly sorted out via helpful staff at local kirkcaldy CPW branch where I purchased handset
So all good signal coverage mainly good in Lothian & fife way better than prev with
In summary my review is overall.good phone & tarrif

I was rather lucky/ unlucky with this offer,
In Dec/Jan 2012 I started having intermittent web issues and issues with the phone helicoptering in E or G mobile signal areas.
I changed the sim
I changed the settings.
It went to CPW techs.
It went to HTC.
I got a replacement phone
I rinsed and repeated until May when Talkmobile had had enough of my voice I think and they ended my contract and let me keep the phone.

I move back to giffgaff who I'd come from to get the Htc One S offer only to have the issues reversed and my call signal went and the web was fine :disappointed:
I eventually got another replacement phone in July from HTC and all had been well until just over a month ago when it started helicoptering again.
Do to my history, they authorised another replacement phone which i got on April 17th.
That one is back at HTC now :disappointed:

Honestly....I don't think I'd ever get another HTC after this.

22 Apr 14 #1015
You know, on reflection, I think I may just keep this contract going. The One S was sold long ago for £300 so the actual contract cost was minimal and the u/l data is a real bonus these days (especially since I've been happy tethering for the last 2 weeks due to waiting for BB to be installed at my new address. Not stopped me yet!).

Sadly Vodafone for me were very poor. Coverage in Edinburgh in my home was almost non existent. My wife, on O2, gets coverage everywhere. I changed from Voda to Ovivo (piggyback Voda) it was also poor....I'm now with TalkTalk...aaargghh! It's Vodafone problems again!!!
This TalkMobile deal from Carphone Warehouse seemed great at the time for my daughter. In truth she has hardly used the "unlimited internet" as she gets WiFi pretty much everywhere, especially at home...where the Vodafone signal doesn't exist!!! :smirk:

This is soon up for renewal and I for one won't be renewing unless they offer me a really good phone or something as Vodafone network is dire.

big lack of signal most places and I'm in a main town. very small number of places with 3g and even in the places I get a full 3g signal the data is very very slow.

Downloaded android 4.0.4 and have had an issue with SIM since.

Sometimes when I turn the phone on flight mode is locked and no reception. A restart sorts this but it's frustrating it keeps happening.

I haven't received the sim update.

I've contacted HTC and they've suggested a hard reset or send the phone for repair. None of these are appealing.

Great, I did this so called 'update' as well. I was having no problems with connections or anything on the old firmware but thought I may get better signal reception at home with the update....how wrong was I!

I keep losing signal and needing to reboot the phone, when it's rebooting a message along the top comes up saying 'restricted access changed'

Can I backdate the software at all?? I also installed that sim customization thing too...

@ipaq - Have you tried a factory reset - you'll have to reinstall your apps tho.

27 Sep 12 #993
Hi Login,

Yes I have tried the factory reset, I have also tried the 'virtual battery pull' due to the sealed in battery (hold down the power button for ten seconds, then a message pops up informing you if you keep the power button pressed for a further three seconds it will do a reset, this doesn’t wipe the apps and info though). I also got into a recovery mode? which I have since learned is where you can flash and old RUU back,

All the above did not rectify the restarting issue, checking Google it seems to be fairly common,,,,

Oh well it is on its way back to HTC now, I am a tad worried it will come back scratched to bu**ery, still broken and have taken a lot longer than the quoted five working days....sigh.

Cheers

Have you recieved the notification to download an application update - "SIM Customization" ?
ipaq
26 Sep 12 #989
Yep, sounds the same as mine, I had the 'report the problem' message appear at least half a dozen times, which I did send off. I tried a number of options with the power button (holding down the volume down button + power and getting the recovery / safe mode options) but nothing worked.

Glad it worked ok for you.
logindetails
26 Sep 12 #988
Mine went a little screwy after the upgrade - for about half an hour it kept freezing then rebooting - on reboot it gave me an option to report the problem so I did. I eventually simulated a battery pull by holding down the power button for ~10 seconds which seems to have resolved the problem - it's running like a dream now

This morning I recieved notification of a further service update - "Sim Customization" - I wonder if this was in response to me reporting the rebooting problem. I don't know what it's for but it was only around 128KB - I installed it and everything is still working ok.

Just to update on my post-termination bill from Talkmobile, I called into the CPW store where I returned the handset, and had the contract terminated.

Told them about this, and the bill I'd received, and when they contacted Talkmobile, I was told it must be that the termination takes 3-5 working days to go through, and as I terminated on the 27 June, the bill came into force from then for another month. They did comnfirm the contract had been cancelled and the line/numer deactivated.

However, as the termination had gone through from 27th, they would credit my account with the amount owing, and there would therefore be nothing to pay.

So, its would appear to be sorted.

I Also received a bill from Talkmobile yesterday, despite having cancelled my contract instore under the CPW 14 day network coverage guarantee. It states its for a bill period from 27 june-27 july, even thought the contract was cancelled on June 27th.

Tried to phone them, but its an automated line ,and when it asks to key in the mobile number, it won't accept it, which leads me to think the line/number is actually terminated already. So just gonna wait and see if they chase up this 'bill' again.

On the flip side, Quidco paid the £35 cashback into my account yesterday too, despite the fact that this was terminated on 27th June.

also got my quid co.....................

Was up london yesterday and decided to swap the sim out and use the talk mobile one!!!

FECK ME

12mb plus downloads and 3mb uploads!!!!

BUT i still think most problems are a combination of the vodafone network and this phone.

With my tmobile sim in i have a signal all the time apart from places where you expect not to have one. Basements.....metal buildings etc.............

If i do have the voda one in i can have a full signal and be talking away and then it just drops and can take ages to re connect to a signal sometimes requiring a reboot of the phone. I never get this with tmobile.

All in all im happy.

Just be good if we knew if we could pay contracts off early or what retentions were like lol:)

Got fed up at how slow my htc was, even in city centers it was frustratingly slow, so enough was enough, i took it into cpw, the manager messed around with it fir about half an hour, and agreed it was slow and looked like something was 'blocking' the internet and slowing it down, he passed me over to a very clever chap, who reset the phone, from a factory reset, and now he phone is faster than ive ever had it. He knew what was wrong with it, done it and its great. He used to be a programmer, so knows his stuff. Factory reset is holding the power and volume buttones down fir a longtime, wait till a Dos type screen comes up and choose factory reset. Ive lost the music and photos i had, but numbers and apps restored.

I've got signal issues as well but on the HOX and it's on Vodafone. VF are patchy even in London, at home I get the best ever 3G speeds compared to any network, but at work a different story, in our new building in my room I get no signal, where as those on o2 and T-Mobile get signal which is a shame! In our 2nd building I get low signal which hammers my battery, where as those on T-Mobile and such get good signal.

Most places I've been in London seems fine overall but some patchy areas and indoors performance in modern buildings can be a bit poor.

WELL! I've had enough myself now! Had it 9 days after waiting 3 weeks, and although reception appears OK when it works - it suddenly stops and then crashes at the front screen, and then sometimes starts flashing between screens. CPW support is absolutley crap!

I have been in touch online and I can take it back within 14 days (and change the handset in 28 apparently) - does anyone know if I can take it to any CPW shop?

Where do I start. I returned my handset due to the chipping issue on Monday at the local store once I found out there were stock at the warehouse. Went to collect the replacement yesterday, opened the box and
the camera lense was cracked so showed the advisor who took it back. To be honest the box was sealed and the phone was new with the latest version of the firmware. My third phone should have been delivered to me today but more than likely will be with me tomorrow hopefully. I believe the phone cannot handle low reception.

As well as numerous problems reported from people around the world obviously not on Vodafone, there are plenty of other UK people having the same problem on other UK carriers other than Vodafone. It's pretty obvious that the phone simply has a big problem with weak signals. Vodafone's generally poor coverage across the country (compared to other main UK carriers), and the fact that the majority of One S users are on Talkmobile / Vodafone due to various promotions, is highlighting the issue on their network more than others. I'm certain this is a hardware issue, that rears it's head when signal is weak on any carrier.

Right i strongly believe this is a vodafone/htc one phone issue.

On my way home from work i thought id put the vodafone sim into the phone..............

Lost count of the amount of times it lost signal and wouldnt even pick one up until i rebooted. Signal was full then nothing etc.

The same journey with my t mobile sim in is/was fine. Switching to orange and back again seamlessly. Browsing the net etc.....

maybe the phone is just incompatible with the voda fone network or at least it doesnt work properly.

i think its just to much of a coincident that my other sims work fine.]

One i will say is that im now switching sims over to the talk mobile one when i want to use the phone as a wifi point. If in a good area the speed is amazing. 6mb download and 2mb up are the best ive hit.

today i was in a place where i only got 1 bar of hsdpa signal so i made a parabolic aerial out of carboard tin foil and the phone......

Went up to 2 bars/3 bars and was getting 2-3mb down and 1.5 up.

BUT as i said when travelling earlier it was virtually unusable

Sadly, I have just taken the phone back, had lots of problems with delayed delivery, errors porting the number, incorrectly cancelling the sim, etc...when I got it going it was a brilliant camera, great for web browsing, good battery life, great for audio....but....had virtually no signal!!! Very frustrating as it's a gorgeous looking phone and was an amazing price, but the phone/network issues are too much, if you can't make calls and texts, might as well buy an iPod

One thing I will say, the staff in the local branch of Carphone Warehouse were amazing, really helpful and friendly, despite all the issues, no hard sell, just good customer serivce, very rare these days but highly appreciated.

returned my phone to cpwh on Tuesday to get a new replacement since the original delivered one was a returned phone.

Went to pick up the new phone today and it had a big scratch across the top, suggesting that was also a returned phone, since there is no stock instore they are ordering one so I'll have to wait possibly till next week to get it.

im sure its vodafone......................but no one can be sure till htc say something.........

At home and my friends i always struggle to get a signal at all on anyphone and if i do its 1 bar that drops....

with the htc its fine on one bar and i can even walk between rooms with out dropping the call.

although saying that ive got the voda fone sim, in today and got the phone propped up outside the window and getting two bars on hscdpa and have been downloading at 6mb speeds  lol

If its not the voda sim then the poor signal/switching they use is to blame in a big way.

Its definitely a handset/antenna issue. You can see the signal drop off when you grasp the handset and see the signal return when you put the handset down or hold it lightly with two fingers. A colleague of mine says his works better upside down so he's installed an app to invert the screen display.

My phone was one of those on back-order and it arrived on Mon 2nd July. I'm quite pleased with the reception so far and generally Vodafone/Talkmobile isn't particularly strong in my area (DE7). Not sure if the latest batch of phones have had the issue fixed or whether I've just been lucky. The signal seems as strong as a couple of other phones I've tried. Fingers crossed that it remains okay as I really like the phone.

It will be really nice to eventually find out for sure if it is a phone or network issue as everyone seems to be having different experiences.

for all those having signal problems its defintately vodafone.......................

surprisingly i thought they had a good network.

Ive been using my phone for two weeks now with my t-mobile sim and have good signal every where i go. Normally hsdpa as well.

How ever ive just put my talk mobile sim and oh my god its pants...............lucky to get a 3g signal and when you do its all over the place........constantly going from full bars to nothing then back again and switching between 2g and 3g.........

try another sim in and see if that helps.

It's absolutely not just Vodafone, my o2 SIM shows exactly the same problem, it's a handset problem. The phone has an issue with medium / poor strength signal, it drops it where other phones would hold it. People are obviously going to experience different results, as signal strength for all carriers changes all around the country. Someone who sent their phone to HTC have been told it needs a replacement aerial, which suggests they're starting to discover the problem.

Quick update on my experience with the One S

Finally picked up on Monday this week, currently using existing Virgin media sim (cut down to micro size). Signal is no worse than my previous Nokia 5800. I tried to update the phone software but I already have the latest so it tells me. All cable items were in sealed bags apart from the phone which was not but had the HTC screen protector on, is this normal not to be bagged?

Not sure if this new batch have had the signal issue resolved? Hence the latest update already on phone.

All in all a great phone with so signal issues (have not tried the supplied sim, daughter is having that one).

Just got to get Topcasback to pay up now.....

Best Regards

@Retrogeezer:

I'm more than happy with it. Signal is better at work than home, but that was true of my old t-mobile phone. Only place I've had rubbish signal ie almost nothing, is in a place where other people with different phones on different networks all have rubbish signals, so its not a talkmobile/1S problem. I even had a good experience with talkmobile's customer services who gave me a no hassle discount because I had a faulty handset and was without a working phone for a few days. Slight issue with copying stuff over to the phone via USB but I use the airdroid app anyway, so no biggie.

Heard from a friend who is on his 2nd HTC One S, and both have suffered the 'flashing screen' issue - the second one is going back to HTC for repair.

Wasn't a problem I encountered, but as nice as this handset was, it seems beset with problems of one sort or another.

On the flipside, I'm loving the Samsung Galaxy Note i now own ,and am getting near faultless call and mobile internet signal with T-Mobile.

On my bill I am charged £3.11 and £13.33 and then vat is applied to both.

I think the first amount is for the short period from when you got the phone to the first billing date, then the £13.33 is the monthly charge without the vat. then vat is applied to both.

In your case it must be coincidence the total equals £16 plus vat
bellboys

Surely the £19.20 included pro rata line rental for part of the 'old month'? It's not rocket science - in the above bill add 20% VAT to the £13.33 figure and what do you get?

Took a flyer on the Samsung Galaxy Note / T-Mobile £15.50/month deal earlier this week before I'd returned the HTC phone (hence my panic when CPW initially refused the return).

Anyway, trying it out at work this morning with the T-Mobile sim in it, and I get full signal and 'H' mobile internet - so a dramatic improvement on what I had before, which I still believe was network (TalkMobile/Vodafone) related, but possibly also handset related too.

27 Jun 12 #909
Well, just phoned CPW customer services, and explained the situation, and what I was told instore last night.

He told me that what I was told was basically 'rubbish'. The 14 day network coverage guarantee begins when you receive the phone, not when you purchase/place the order, so I am now on day 8, not 15.

He also told me that returns were accepted, where an alternative network wasn't acceptable for any reason. The woman in the shop last night basically told me that 'No Network, except O2 will accept a return'.

Therefore, he has put a note on the system on my account that the store has to action a return for me. So going back in tonight to (hopefully) get this sorted.

EDIT: Returned the phone this evening to the CPW store. Line has been cancelled, and from what I can see, no charge will be taken for the usage so far.

A shame all in, as I liked the handset a lot, and the tariff was a good one, but a phone that I can't use at work is no good for me.

Just found this press release from CPW in 2010 when they launched their Network Guarantee...

http://pressoffice.carphonewarehouse.com/news/item/the_carphone_warehouse_launches_14_day_coverage_guarantee/?phpMyAdmin=AHBslJMinbQ440hrdN48U9K1ZO9

"In the event of returns, The Carphone Warehouse will endeavour to find the customer an alternative network but should this not be possible then a full return can be processed."

So this would suggest that a return is/should be an option?

I've had mine up and running for a couple of days now and I'm getting the poor signal problem but I am 100% sure that its related to the handset not the network. I'll wake up the phone and it will have 2-3 bars signal but it soon drop to zero. But..... if I place the handset flat on the table, it gets its signal back. After further experiments, I get a good signal with the handset propped up vertically. What is killing the signal is my hand grasping the handset in the traditional way. I'm no expert but it seems that the phone's antenna is being masked by the users hand.

Couldn't get through to the CPW customer services, so have sent them an email anyway.

However in the meantime, have looked at the TalkMobile T&C's, and they have a 14 day 'change your mind' policy for return/money back or exchange of handset - says nothing of whether you have used the phone and/or sim. Monthly tariff/usage charges up to cancellation would be applicable, but I expected that. The woman in CPW told me that NO network will accept a return, except for O2 - it appear this was an inaccuracy (lie).

So going to contact TalkMobile CS tomorrow (now closed) and query this with them too. They also state 14 days 'from date of purchase', but how can this be applicable when I was waiting for the phone to arrive for the first 7 days due to it being on back order?

EDIT: Oh well, found something else which states phones/contracts bought at CPW can't be returned if sim has been used. :disappointed:

Back to waiting for a reply from CPW CS then.

Yes they said the same to me but I was hoping that if say 500 people get in touch all saying the same thing about this phone surely they will start to do something about it or else help raise the priority of getting this resolved.

I've spent more money on screen protectors and a Case-Mate case and don't want to return a great phone and start all over again - so I figure the more people who follow through an escalate with them the better - I really doubt that sending the phone back will make any difference right now though see this post on xda forums (it was following up on my post there.

I was told that they would not look at forum posts and that I should hard reset, return phone for repair (aka latest software which I already have) I'm not going to do either and fill out the form that this has not resolved my problem.

johnson293
26 Jun 12 #899
Just been into a CPW store to try and return this mobile, and been told I can't.

I cited my network issue and mentioned problems I'd read about with other of these handsets.

Firstly, was told this was day 14 of the network guarantee, though I only picked the phone up last Tuesday after it had been on back order - I placed my order 14 days ago. The woman told me the guarantee started on the date of purchase??!!

So, she advised me that under the guarantee I could change to a different tariff, but the cheapest one to get this handset free is £31/month, Or alternatively, I can change the handset to a lower spec one, on a tariff closer to the price of this deal. That is it, no returns.

So, I'm going to get in touch with customer services, firstly about the 14 day issue, and then about how their 'guarantee' can force you either into a higher tariff, or take a lesser mobile, or keep the one that doesn't give the coverage you need.

Not too happy right this moment.

EDIT:

And of course, CS closes at 7pm, so I've just missed them. Won't be happy if they still try and class tomorrow as day 15 of their 'network guarantee'.

The CPW hold music does fade out and back in, regardless of the actual phone you're using.

Just wanted to give a bit of credit to part of CPW here. I had a faulty handset when mine was delivered and have been waiting for some stock to arrive in my local branch to get an exchange. Big cheers then, for the CPW website stock checker, which showed me on Sunday that my next nearest branch (Lichfield) had some stock (where they got them from I don't know, as no-one else seems to have any, and they didn't have any a couple of days before). I called them, reserved it and went down later to exchange. Great service, helpful and now I have a nice shiny new One S (and yes, it was a brand new phone, not a return).

Signal is broadly similar to my old T-Mobile (both phone and data), so all good.

Seems good quality and a good fit, screen protectors are those 3 layer ones where you take one bit off to fit, then the last bit off once fitted properly.

Well, afterreading some of the comments above, starting to wonder if there is a signal issue with my handset too.

WiFi and mobile internet been ok at home today, but call signal has been 1-2 bars, and occassionally disappearing. Its been raining all day, with loads of cloud cover which may be affecting the signal.

While I may still be able to make calls, I'm concerned at comments that this handset doesn't handle low signals well, and that in future I may lose it altogether, particularly if I'm out/about where the signal isn't great, and sods law I'll need the phone. But this is also making wary of going for another HTC One S, as much as I love the handset.

So now, I'm considering the Samsung Galaxy Note, which I have seen on an alternative deal (50mins, 250txts, 750mb data - £15.50/month).

Gutted about this deal, as it seemed great with the handset and unlimited data, but if the signal/network is as flakey as seems, then it just isn't worth the risk of being tied in for 24 months.

So. may be going back to CPW tomorrow to see if I can get this contract cancelled, and return the handset. :disappointed:

Surely you new phone should be activated out of the box. just bought an s3 from the T-Mobile deal from this site and i could use it right away. Porting my number took less then 24 hours after i phoned my pac code through.
They also lifted and restrictions at the same time.

I'm still not a happy bunny. It took 8 days for me to receive my phone, even though colleagues who ordered a day after me got theirs after 24 hours. Now I've still got a dead handset waiting for the port to go through. I put the sim in on Wednesday and according to CPW, the port will not go through until Monday (tomorrow). Thats two weeks from purchase to having a phone ready to use. I just hope I don't have any signal issues when it does connect. I have been trying it out on my home wifi network and the phone looks fantastic. Can't see me buying from CPW again though :disappointed:

Had it a few days now with no signal problems (Nottingham). Have been running 3 laptops internet from it's own wifi hotspot off 'H' internet today (at about 6 MB/s) while moving house and it has performed perfectly.

Only problem is Talkmobile wanted a £150 deposit to unblock adult content which is outrageous!

Not sure why you have a demand for £150 to unblock content. I just phoned 5888 from my handset and told them to remove it. Tried ordering wine on Thursday and missed out on £75 worth of wine for £15 because of the filter.

The worst part (apart from automatically censoring the Internet rather than making it an option at the point of sale) is I may have to wait 10 days for the filter to be removed.

It really does feel like mobile phone companies are being dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world. Unreasonable delays like this just feel like sour grapes.

Had to return mine last week due to signal problem, (poor to non-existent), despite supposedly good coverage. I was hoping that it was a Talkmobile/ voda problem, cos the handset is brilliant, but a bit of googling reveals many others with same probs on other networks. I therefore conclude that the One S is inherently faulty, and I'm looking for a good deal on maybe an s2, with T mobile, because their association with Orange seem to give the best coverage.
Incidentally, talkmobile's 14 day return policy for poor signal is really only 13 days, with the day of purchase being day one. So if you buy on a Friday the 14 days finish on a Thursday. I was lucky to get a refund.
edit: by the way, staff in store took my word for signal problem without question. They must know something.

This is a hardware fault that rears it's ugly head depending on network coverage. The phone bombs whenever coverage is moderately weak, when other phones would have still held a good signal, this one can't. When signal is strong, the phone is great and chugs along fine. So obviously people are going to experience varying issues on different carriers... just because you stick in an Orange SIM and suddenly you've got 5/5 in your home when your Talkmobile had 1/5, that doesn't mean it's a network issue. When you get in an area where Orange signal is moderate / weak, the phone will cr*p out, when maybe Talkmobile would have had 5/5. Swings and roundabouts.

The various networks are not going to be able to magically fix this problem, hence why they are all now saying they have raised it with HTC. For us who are going to stick with the phone, we need to hope that this is a "simple" software issue that HTC can fix with an OTA update. Failing that, a hardware issue that HTC can repair and return (bet their engineers will enjoy that...). Worse case scenario, HTC deny any problems, and we're screwed.

Okay, now I'm confused. With all these comments saying it a fault on the HTC one s itself. Here's my feedback from this deal.
Full signal at home but data connection is stuck on G. Now I stick this talk mobile sim into my HTC Desire S, and the result the same. 3 mobile sim in my desire s got full signal and data connection is H/3G.
So, so far my tests indicates its a problem a problem with the network provider - Talk mobile.

What do you guys recon?

I think perhaps that some people have problem phones and others have issues with the network.
The problem surely can't be with all of the phones you would have thought a problem like
that have been found well before the phone was released?

Only way to be sure would be for people to swap phones ;-D

As I already said in earlier posts I was the same, mine was an issue with the network not the phone.. talk mobile was very quick to blame the phone not being compatible with the network... DON'T speak with Roy at Talkmobile he doesn't listen and just rambles on very annoying..
johnson293
24 Jun 12 #875
Well just to add my two-penneth to this latest debate.

For me, this defintely seems like a network issue, not the handset.

The signal fluctuates for me from very good-good at home and in Newcastle town centre, to poor/non-existent at work.

WiFi works brilliant for me, and at home get a decent 3g/H connection - again at work, I can only get a G or E connection, which makes using the mobile internet impossible.

My old O2 W995 handset gets a solid 5 bar signal and H connection when placed next to the HTC at work.

I submitted a message about this on the Vodafone eforum, as its their network that TalkMobile uses.

The reply I go for the poor signal at work was that there were two transmitters nearby supplying that area, and neither had any issues, therefore, it seemed the office was just in a poor signal area.

The Talkmobile and Vodafone coverage maps are identical, and say I shoudl get 'good indoor' call signal, and 'variable' internet.

I am close to changing to Orange, as their coverage map is more comprehensive than TM/VF, and they also use T-Mobiels network as a back up.

Having looked at my usage, the 50mins call time/month would do me (believe it or not) and there are 3000 texts, but the data is what was worrying me - 250mb didn't seem much. However, I can connect to Wifi fine at home and out and about, so the inclusive data would almost just be a back up for none wifi areas.

I would also be happier knowing I could use it where I wanted, and not just in certain areas.

Then, just gotta hope the HTC One S handset I got from Phones4U would be ok, too!

Glad it was of some use.

That's the thing, the advisor basically said that this was an HTC problem not a TM one and
it involved quite a lot of toing-froing to get a commitment via his manager that we would look
at the situation in a months time. To be fair though I felt he was very helpful and honest about
what Talk Mobiles position is and what my options are.

I did mention the Sale of Goods Act and "fit for purpose" a couple of times. Not being able
make or receive calls/texts reliably (where you can with another phone under identical conditions)
would quite clearly seem to be a fail on that front.

However much they would like to pass the buck on, the retailer who sold you the phone is
liable to offer you a refund/cancellation as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for this report, this is at least more than I could get out of Vodafone who just keep saying "we've escalated it to our devices team". It's good to get some confirmation that this is a handset problem as suspected, and not a Talkmobile / Vodafone network problem (gathered that anyway as my o2 SIM shows exactly the same problem in the One S). I'm going to hang onto the phone in the hope that HTC can fix it with an OTA or a free repair. Maybe that's foolish, but I love the phone itself. Maybe I'll try and get a similar promise from Dialaphone that they'll replace the handset in a month if no improvement.

I got a loyalty deal on this phone, for my wife, the day before this deal went active.

I have just gotten off a long phone call with Talk Mobile Customer Service and the advisor told
me that all UK Networks have major issues with this phone and it's connectivity. They are all pressing
hard for a fix/replacements from HTC - though there is no clear response as of yet.

He may have been exagerating, but it was clear to me from what he said that Talk Mobile are having
huge problems with this handset, largely on the back of this promotion. We've gotten a months line rental
back and a promise to look at a replacement handset in a month if the issue has not been resolved by that
stage. (though not like-for-like :man: )

Though the contract was not quite the same £10pm 600Mb Data + £200 for the phone works out at £18.30 pm
But it does mean if things aren't resolved we could look at another the handset - the fixed One X perhaps :disappointed:

In case anyone wonders we did not have time to port the number away and back again to get this deal.

The phone we have here has issues both with WiFi and the Phone Signal. I had a Galaxy S2(also on TM) sat
right next to it showing two bars whilst the One S had none - a reboot and suddenly the One S had a
signal and texts were being sent/received. The WiFi only works reliably if you go into advanced settings and make sure
that "Best WiFi Performance" is ticked - our house has thick old stone walls.

I was sat right next the router and it was ~5 minutes before the signal jumped up to full on the display FWIW ;-?

[EDIT]

Now that I think back there may have been some mention of this not affecting all handsets!

Ping = 260ms ; Download = 2099kbps ; Upload = 359kbps

Work (Solid G):

So are you having trouble making calls?? As I said earlier, even though mine shows no bars or one at at home I can still make a call. If you can make a call it doesn't matter what the signal bars say surely?
johnson293 to retrogeezer
21 Jun 12 #851
I can make calls at one bar, but at work its has dropped altogether with the message saying 'emergency calls only'.

The main thing about getting a smartphone was to use mobile internet more, and at work, and even in a few places at the Metro Centre this evening, it was very slow, only hitting a 'G' connection. Its completely unusable at work during the day.

Therefore, what is the point of an unlimited data deal if I can't use it often enough?

I think i'd would rather pay a bit more and know I wasn't going to worry whether I'm gonna be able to go online, or even make a call, than be tied into a 24 month contract where I'm always usnure of reception..
johnson293
21 Jun 12 #849
Been into CPW store this evening about the TalkMobile issues, and to see what my options were under the 'coverage guarantee'.

The girl checked the computer, and basically I can cancel the contract and return the phone, or change to any other tariff, but they will be at the current price for this handset, with no discounts available.

The cheapest current tariff available instore for this handset to be free is £31/month. If I pay £49.99 for the handset, I can change to a £26/month tariff. Neirher of these are very appealing.

Looking at Phones4U, they still have this phone in either Black or Grey on the orange panther tariff for £15.50/month with 50 minutes, 3000 texts and 250mb data, + one orange swappable, plus a couple of other extras. They also have the same tariff at £20.50/month with 100mins, 3000 texts, 500mb data and £100 cashback (by redemption, and same extras as above.

Both of these would also qualify for £50 quidco too.

Have checked the Orange coverage checker, and coverage appears to be better for my home and work postcodes, and and Orange also use T-Mobiles network/masts as a back up.

Therefore, I'm seriously considering returning this to CPW and cancelling the contract, and taking out one of those new deals above with Phones4U.

While I wont get u/l data, the WiFi on this phone works well, so would use that at home and at hotspots, with the inclusive data for areas without wifi.

Its a shame, but the signal/coverage on Talkmobile just seems to flakey/risky, especially for 24 months, and surely Orange can't be any worse?

Rustybucket to retrogeezer

The guy is wrong. Li-ion batteries don't have memory effect issues requiring full discharge and recharge cycles. In fact running it flat and storing it like that would harm the efficacy of the battery. Just use and charge when you need to and when is convenient for you. Don't believe me? Google it and see.

Spoke to Talkmobile Customer Services who talked me through a few setting changes to get me on 3G as password and username were not set (should be wap in both) in access point name. Well today, i'm more than convinced that my signal issue is to do with Talkmobile than the handset.

Had 4 bars this morning at home, then driving through and around town on my way to work again - constant 5 bars and 'H' symbol.

Get to work in North Shields (near coast) and the signal drops to 1-2 bars and I have a 'G' symbol now. Though sitting on my desk now, the signal bar is fluctuating between 1 and 4 bars, but still only 'G' internet.

So it seems that Talkmobile coverage isn't great where I work.... not good, but at least the handset appears to be ok then.

Given this, is it worth going back to CPW, as they may not offer me another £16 deal (from comments above), and I dont really want to pay a lot more/month.
natah to johnson293

I reluctantly tried the talkmobile sim in the phone yesterday. I find that when I'm at work, I get good reception but as soon as I'm home I only get one bar. Currently trying a O2 sim card in the phone and its showing 95% reception (-65dBm ASU:22) with 5 bars reception and H signal type) The signal strength is stable as well. In conclusion I agree with Johnston293 and its looking like the phone is ok and the issue may be with the talkmobile network. I've had a look at the forums and it seems like Vodafone users also have this issue (talkmobile works on the Vodafone network) I've used a software call Network signal info from Andriod play to monitor the signal strength so it may be work downloading if you wish to do the same.

Anyone who is thinking about taking it back and worried about refusal: I covered my back by sending a message via Twitter to the talkmaobile account asking if I could reurn my mobile under the 14 day guarantee due to signal issues. That way, the confirmation they sent me back I could argue as written confirmation of the company's commitment to process my return.

retrogeezer/bellboys: the problem with the coverage guarantee is that they only guarantee to allow you to change network - but not keep the same tariff, it would be whatever 'best match' they could come up with on another network from existing price plans (at least that's what I was quite clearly told, but as I've said before one of the biggest problems I've had with CPW is the lack of consistency, it seems to mostly depend on who you speak to/manager's discretion.)

I'm quite sure this will work out for some people, but as I don't desperately need a new phone or contract (I was just trying to take advantage of the offer as I wanted, but not needed, a new phone, and in hope of being able to make better use of the contract allowances in future - won't be the case at moment) I much preferred to take the lower risk option. And so far what CPW website, phone service and store said all confirms this as being correct. I'd rather follow that than a few people's experiences on here that depend on manager's discretion.

Ultimately people have to take the information they have and decide for themselves.

20 Jun 12 #818
Precisely. Imo it's crazy to take it back and cancel without trying it first. There's no way you will get a deal anywhere near as good as this anywhere else at the moment. Just don't get it...

Hopefully final update from me, may be of use to people still receiving their phones...

After cancelling my order but it being sent out anyway, I took it into a CPW store (per option given on phone, as it would take Yodel 4 days to return to sender otherwise). Despite having called customer services and their second tier complaints team saying the store would sort out about my PAC/moving back to current network, the first person I spoke to in store said "we can't do that". She said this 3 times, repeated after I insisted their call centre team said the shop would. She then fetched someone else, who called their internal line, and eventually got it sorted (apparently even stores get put on hold).

The second guy, who seemed to know what he was talking about said that it was a good thing I had not used the SIM, as they don't accept returns if you do, and pointed out the text printed on the SIM envelope. When I prompted him further about how some people online have succeeded in doing so, he said it was not their policy to do so, but managers at their discretion could do so.

Clearly if your phone works, and you get a good signal, this is a good deal and I'm happy for those people where it works out. But if you are concerned as I was by the number of comments saying the handset itself has general poor signal quality then I recommend you do what I did and return without opening the SIM pack. Testing the phone itself *may* be ok (but they box does have seals so they can tell if you've opened it - also means if you get an unsealed box that means it's probably a return) but even their he repeated what website said about not being able to download data onto it.

So I guess I'll be keeping a close eye out for another hot deal on here with a different company

If you don't mind me asking, have you placed your phone in your pocket with some coins? I've had this phone for well over a week now, it's often been in my pocket but I've been very careful that it's actually the only thing in there (like you should do with all mobiles) and there isn't a mark on it anywhere.

Well another update, but not quite the one i'd expected to make.

After a day of little or no signal at work, I was resigned to having to swap this phone in. However, on the drive home, I was constantly checking the signal (safely when stopped). Anyway, as I got out of North Shields, all the way through and near Newcastle city centre, the signal read 5 full bars, constantly and an H symbol for the mobile internet.

Got nearer home and the signal dropped, but right now, it seems a steady 3-4 bars, but the phone is connected to the home BB via WiFi.

So, i'm beginning to think that the signal issue is more to do with TalkMobile's coverage near work - which is odd, becasue two of the guys at work have Vodafone mobiles with no issues.

Anyway, before going back to CPW, I'm gonna get my existing O2 sim chopped down to a mini-sim so I can try it in the HTC, then at least I can hopefully rule out the handset being at fault. I'll get a sim adapter too, so I can try the talkmobile mini-sim in the W995, again to try and establish if that is at fault.

But on the face of it right now, I'm more convinced the network coverage is the cause, not the phone.... for me.

If it does turn out to be the talkmobile service, I'll go back to CPW and see if they can offer me another £16 contract, with as much mins/texts/data as I can, but doubt i'll get unlimited data. However, I can connect faultlessly via WiFi with my home BB, so even if I dont get U/L data, might only need enough to use where there aren't any WiFi hotspots.

I'm in two minds what to do with this now.
My signal is pretty appauling, so do I await Voda to buck up their ideas (According to CarphoneWarehouse, they're having problems - nationwide?? Really!?), return it and walk away, exchange it for a new phone when they get them back in stock - or given the fact I contacted HTC directly on their website last night, send it away to them for repair?

They tried talking me through a few things, which didn't appear to change it at all. So their description for return is "Signal issues where HDSPA and 3G are intermittently changing causing signal loss"

I really love the phone now - and my HTC Hero seems quite the slow thing now!

But these kind of issues are ridiculous :/

Unfortunately, I dont have another phone that'll take the micro-sim to try it out, and can't try my current O2 sim in this phone.

But lying the two phones side-by-side on my desk, I get 5 bars and H on the O2 phone, and 2 bars and G on the HTC.

I have checked the coverage checker on Talkmobiles website, and for the work postcode it states I should get 'Good Indoor' for calls and texts, and 'variable' for mobile internet.

Gonna take some pics of the phone screen to show CPW when I go back in, but surely this will qualify under their 'Coverage Guarantee'?

In the meatime, might try and get a micro-sim adapter to try the sim in another phone, as I'd like to keep the tariff if possible (with the U/L data) and try and sort an alternative phone, if needed.

I'm gonna give it a try out up to and including this weekend, and if the signal/mobile internet access proves to be a problem, it'll go back early next week.

It seems to be a cracking phone, so wanna make sure that there really is a problem with this handset before turning it in.

If it does need to go back, wonder if CPW would give me a Galaxy S2 on the same £16 tariff, as that was the other handset I was considering, but it was only on the £20.50 tariff (at the time).

EDIT: At work now down at North Shields, and the signal bar is still fluctuating between 2-3 bars, but the internet symbol is now 'G' instead of 3G and H it had been at home. Tried to load Facebook, and it failed to load some of the images.

So, first impressions, looking like an even weaker signal at work than at home.

UPDATE- went to store to exchange for a new handset (they had ordered in from another store.) Had a walk around town and maximum signal was 2/5 bars, which frequently dropped off. So I returned to store to cancel the whole contract (you can cancel contract due to faulty handset within 30 days of activation- or maybe 28) annoyed because I really liked the phone. There were no more One S handset to be found, so he offered me an HTC Sensation - which I politely declined! When I mentioned the One X, he said it would be £200 extra to pay. No thanks.

I said I would take the handset and phone customer services, however he offered to speak to store support while I went to put extra time on the car. When I returned he had been passed to the "Resolve" team who authorised a £200 credit so I didn't have to pay.
So I am happy now, although bought tons of One S accessories that I will have to return.

The SIGNAL IS GOOD on the One X (same microsim) so in conclusion there must be a fault with at least some of the One S handets.

Hope this helps and some of you manage to have the same experience.

Well, sitting at home the signal bar is fluctuating between 2 and 3 bars, but has hit full 5 bars a couple of times.

My O2 W995 is sitting here with 3-4 bar signal, but even that is fluctuating down to 1 bar at times.

The HTC is fluctuating between a 3G and an H symbol for mobile internet, but seems to connect fine. The W995 is showing a constant H symbol.

Just picked mine up. Haven't plugged it in or anything, so can;t comment on the signal/coverage issues yet.

However, the phone packaging has its security seals intact, and the model is the Z520e, 1.5GHz model, so good so far.

Will post back with results of the signal/coverage up here (Newcastle upon Tyne).

EDIT: The sim card pack has a message on the front of it, as follows:

"By inserting the enclosed sim card into your handset and using it, you have signified your acceptance of the terms and conditions enclosed, and will NOT be able to return your handset or cancel your airtime contract under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000."

I presume this just means if I change my mind, rather than if there is any issue/problem with the network coverage and/or the phone itself?

Received mine yesterday. No security seals and plastic on back and front of phone looks like its been off and reapplied. Is this a dodgy returned phone ? Anyone else have no security seals ?

Had one of these delivered last week by Yodel when I was out. I got a text from Yodel to say it had been delivered and that I could ring the driver direct to arrange re-delivery (he actually lived just down the road so I picked it up from his house). A bit later I got some texts from CPW telling me the phone was on the van for delivery...

Out of interest has anyone else had this issue with the phone? First use, charged it up all fine, but then as soon as the phone goes into sleep mode it's impossible to wake it up and have to do a hard reset. Battery life then shows as full when it eventually comes back on. If the phone is charging when going to sleep then it wakes up fine. I've been in to CPW to get an exchange so now I'm waiting for some to come in to store so I can swap it (was told that if I wanted the online side of the business to send me a phone out I would have to cancel and re-order and would then lose the £16 tariff).

my experince with CPW was pretty good , i was a bit fired up before i begun , expecting that i would need to convince them of the issue , but it was not a problem , "yes sir we have one in stock for you to exchange " , "okay is it a brand new , never used , non customer returned handset ?" , "yes i can confirm that " , "okay i will be in at 12 today"

job done.......so regardless of the issue with HTC , there is no issue with CPW..... which is worth pointing out in my opinion...

I reckon, in CPW's defence, the demand of this deal was huge and would have strained their customer services.

Just cancelled my order for the HTC S one deal with CPW.

I placed my order 8 days ago, had no corresponence from CPW whatsoever concerning a delivery date.. here is my experience of CPW.

Went into Lancaster store June 10th to order phone. They couldn't put order through asked me to come back in on the Monday.

Went back into store on Monday morning - they still couldn't put the order in asked if I could come back later.

Went back into town later to find that they still couldn't put the order through as there was no stock left.. No offer pf back order. They said they would ring me on Tuesday to let me know when I could place an order.

I went home, realising that the folk in CPW Lancaster weren't to hot at their job I ran CPW to order via phone. I did so and was informed that my order wouyld arrive the next day between 7am and 9.30am.

Got up on Tuesday 12th waited for phone - it didn't arrive.. Rang CPW - "sorry sir your details aren't on the system".. go figure..

Placed a further order for phone.. told that it is on back order and that I would hear very soon when the phone is back in stock.

7 days later.. still no phone.. I ring up to be informed that they still don't know when it will be back in stock.. mmm.. "I cancelled my existing contract and got my PAC ready to supply you once my phone arrives", i tell them.. "Oh you can't transfer your number with Talk mobile unless the PAC is supplied at the point of sale", I'm informed..

This is not what I was told last Tuesday on my third and seemingly successful order..

So.. after reading the dreadful reports of signal quality and my very worst experience of any company ever - I tell CPW to stick it.. Now I have to go back to my existing provider and hope they will make my account live again with no penalty..

CPW = useless

good luck to anyone who is stuck with them..

(i feel a bit better now)..

19 Jun 12 #768
I returned it.

Talkmobile somehow lost my PAC code in the order process and told me I had to go to CPW and cancel and re-order to get the PAC through. They're the *ONLY* network with this odd limitation. Naturally, the deal wasn't on any more so I told them to keep it.

To be honest, I'm fed up with Vodafone's coverage anyway, but it was hard to argue with the price of this deal on a phone I wanted. Looks like I'll be going with one of the T-Mobile deals out there.

I haven't read everything on the net about the problems with these handsets, but from comments on here, it seems to be either or.

However, there are people who seem be getting the required signal strength, so I think its just a 'suck it and see' thing with this phone.

If you can get it, try it. If the signal isn't up to strength, then it seems that CPW will replace the handset, swap the tarrif/provider or take it back and cancel the contract.

So, you *shouldn't* be stuck with a phone/service you can't use for 24 months, if you go back to them within the first 14 days.

So advice would be test it thoroughly in different areas to gauge signal strength for yourself.

Well Carphone Warehouse are really screwing stuff up with cashback claims. I ordered two contracts, one for the wife and the other for me using two different browsers just to be sure the cashback deals tracked separately. One of the cashbacks arrived on Topcashback's earnings page within a couple of hours. The other is still missing presumed dead.

I just checked my account at Topcashback and low and behold, the cashback for the one account that got through has now been declined. I'm currently holding the phone in my hand now, so I'm pretty confident I haven't lied about this deal.

Resubmitted my declined claim using the Topcashback system, but seriously, it was the cashback deal that convinced the wife and I to make the switch for budget reasons, so I'll be damned if I'm letting this just go.

Anyone else had their cashback claims declined without reason?

Yesterday I was in Chichester, West Sussex, and incredibly got solid 5/5 bars with H data connection the whole time. Get back to Worthing, and down we go again... had to set to GSM (2G) only to hang on to a couple of bars. This is such a shame, because the phone itself is absolutely fantastic.

I put two copies of the same image with different names on my own web server, so they couldn't have been cached. I'll continue to investigate.
Rustybucket
17 Jun 12 #737
The image was probably cached. Try it with two different browsers (like Dolphin vs the default Internet app) and then compare the results saved off into your photo album. I've looked far and wide and Vodafone do indeed compress images (although not PNG's apparantly) and there is no way of turning it off, unless you are using Windows and using a broadband adaptor.

I haven't a clue either...though that link I post earlier suggests 50dBm is good, 90dBm is poor but should work and 110dBm will be pretty bad with hardly any signal.
The fact the majority of us are getting circa 90dBm tells me its a widespread issue.

But then mine had a value of 92 and my wife's Samsung Galaxy SII on T-Mobile also had 92. So I am not sure of these values are always inferior. I will be checking in different places over the week.

Got an email this morning (sun) to say that my phone has been dispatched to my local CPW store. I ordered Tuesday and friends who ordered Wednesday have already got theirs. Not impressed. I did speak to one helpful CPW person on the phone on Friday who managed to action my PAC code even though I should have given it at time of order. O2 couldn't give me a PAC at the time because of a computer crash and I didn't want to wait incase I missed out on the offer.

After the disappointment of this deal, my parents have now gone with this deal.
With known good T-Mobile/Orange/S2 connection in the area they should be happy.

I'll post the details here as someone seems to like editing the posted deal to make it seem worse...

T-Mobile Text Extra Internet £26 24m
100 mins
Unlimited texts
1500MB data
7 months free by redemption (£182)
Effective monthly cost of £18.42

TopCashBack available of £60 which if it works will be an effective monthly price of £15.92. A total price of £382 over the 24 months.

Probably. You are likely seeing Vodafone's own customised firmware rather than the basic HTC one that unbranded devices from CPW will receive.

Does anyone know of a mobile signal strength app along the lines of Wifi Analyzer? An app that can show you a graph of ALL the mobile signals in your current location. I've found a few which show your own, but not one that can show all the operators. It would make carrier selection much easier

Yet another person with ropey signal here.

Got a call from CPW this am - picked the phone up at lunchtime. The sim became active shortly after insertion and signal strength was the same as my SEXPlay (on t-mobile) Back home and set up email accounts etc, again signal strength as good as SEXPlay. Ran a 3G internet speed test and to my astonishment the One S score was over twice as fast as the SEXPlay and I never considered that to be a slouch.
Got my 25GB on Dropbox - Neat.
I signed up to HTC Watch and downloaded MIP Ghost Protocol for £0.49p which I'm now watching in glorious technicolor - I'm well happy

My point in comparing the two phones, is that in the exact same locations the sony has the strongest possible signal, the htc only has 2 / 5 bars, I would take the 2 / 5 to be a poor comparison against a phone with 4 / 4 bars. Same with the internet signal solid H against a signal dropping for no reason.

I only went for the HTC to get a bigger screen.

Within the last 30 minutes I have lost my internet connection on my phone but I have 3 bars now!

EDIT Internet signal back, due to incorrect APN...Worked since Wednesday so no idea how APN setting could now be incorrect.

If the new phone signal isn't any better then unfortunetly the contract will be getting cancelled:(

16 Jun 12 #704
My faulty phone was returned today instore and even showed no signal there in a town centre location CPW then tried another phone and it to showed no signal so i have now cancelled my contract and also cancelled the other one i had on back order.

This might have been an excellent deal on paper but the reality of it is the phone has huge signal problems and the net is full of similar cases here and abroad my local CPW store admitted this phone has been getting returned to them since launch for the same problem so it is not just a rare case.

Very disappointed now and worse off for two credit checks against mine and my wifes credit files for each handset we ordered :-(

16 Jun 12 #706
I'm surprised this story hasn't gained any traction on tech websites / blogs... you'd thought it's a pretty major thing, considering this is one of HTC's new flagship phones. A friend who works at a CPW said that returns on the One S are over 50%, and that the others are probably just putting up with it or dealing direct with HTC. There are no One Ss out there that are magically perfectly fine and different from all the other "broken" ones, if yours seems fine then consider yourself lucky to live in a spot with an abnormally strong reception (good luck when you're in a spot that hasn't). A search around the web shows that this is affecting all major carriers in the UK (I've tried an o2 sim, same problem).

I have got the weak signal issue as well, my sony experia mini has a solid 4 out of 4 bars connection where as the one s is lucky to sit on 2 out of 5 bars. The mini is running on GiffGaff

My internet keeps jumping between H 3G and E for no reason at all even when not using the internet and not moving about house where as the mini just sits on H constatnly

CPW tell me they are getting a new batch in on Monday, so I will try a new one to see if this helps although I don't think it will.

The phone itself is really good.

The unlimited internet is the killer for me as I watch catch up tv via the internet in work:D

Just discovered that Talkmobile uses image compression on all web images, including those that you upload to the likes of Facebook. There's also no way of turning it off like Tmobile used to offer as a hidden setting.

I haven't tested this with the automatic uploads from the camera to Google, but if they suffer compression as well I will not be best pleased as that was one of the main reasons I wanted this phone and deal.
kevinwilson to Rustybucket
16 Jun 12 #690
I hope that's not the case, it'll be really annoying. I've just tried downloading a high res image over both Wifi and 3G, and compared the contents, and they're both identical. So if they are compressing images they're not doing it for all domains.

Hope others are happy with theirs, but my parents' one has gone back as the signal was shocking. Ordered online but returned in store. They were great in store, no hassle at all.

According to the coverage map pretty much everywhere should be good for calls and yet this was often showing a nice X in the house as well as out and about. When it did see a connection it was mostly G or E. It very rarely showed 3G or H. That suggests to me the phone is at fault as much as the network.

Great deal in theory, but if you can't get a signal, what's the point? :disappointed:

Now, would anyone like to find a sub £20, free phone, 500+MB Galaxy S2 deal on 3/Orange/T-Mobile please? (or S3!)

Just rang CPW customer services.

Was told my order is in the system being processed, but the handset is out of stock, and on back order.

I asked her about orders being cancelled after 7 days, and she told me that when an order is placed on back order, they will still have allocated future stock to that order, and it will be despatched as soon as the stock arrives.

Once the item gets to the shop, if it isn't collected within 7 days, then the order is cancelled - not before delivery, apparently.

She said she couldn't give a timescale, but the phone stock was expected 'within the next 7 days'.

Looks like I'll just have to sit tight and wait it out.

I have read in this thread that others are having signal issues with this handset and unfortunately since receiving ours yesterday we are also experiencing big signal problems infact unless my hand is around the top of the phone i receive no signal inside my house and only one or two bars at best in the garden and only a G signal with a download speed of 22kb i have to drive 2 miles away to get a 3g or H signal and even then only 3 or 4 bars at best gsm signal that fluctuates greatly and won`t sit steady.I have a vodafone handset that sits steady at 2 or 3 bars inside my house and a three mifi that usually gets a 3g or H signal so deffo pointing towards a handset issue rather than a talkmobile issue.

So i have contacted CPW and to be fair they have been very helpful so far and have arranged an exchange handset at my local store to be collected tomorrow and tested at home however i am pretty sure this won`t resolve the issue as it seems like a worldwide htc one s weak signal problem as i googled it last night and page after page of end user signal problems came up for this handset especially in the U.S aswell as here in the U.K

CPW gave me a direct line number to my customer adviser and if my isssues are not resolved with the replacement handset then i have to call him on Monday to arrange a new model handset i.e a Samsung etc and sort another deal out from there or if i wish a complete cancellation of the deal

On another note my TCB is still tracking but not sure if like others if it will eventually drop to zero and my number hasn`t ported over from O2 yet after 24 hours of use my one s is still operating on the original number it came with even though i supplied pac details at point of order but as i`ve liitle or no gsm signal it would be useless anyway so glad it is still on O2 for now
