We normally have some Gala pork pie over Xmas. Was shopping at Tesco this morning when noticed, printed on the label it said "buy all of me at £2.70 per KG". I asked the assistant to weigh it and he said it would be just over £8. I asked if that was at £2.70 per KG and he seemed unaware of the deal, and checked the label. he said it had a different code, re weighed it, and it came to £4. They had 2 so i bought both for £7.89. It seems each pie is packaged in halves and if you buy a full half, you get the cheaper £2.70 price. Both pies weighed in at close to 1.5KG and were approximatly £4 each. Great pork pie for the family over Xmas. (Not sure if they had any left in Failsworth Manchester).

Eggs are separated, the yolks are mixed together and cooked in a long thin sausage type skin. they are cooked in hot water then the skin is peeled off. then the yolk length is inserted into a wider sausage skin, then the mixed whites are added and cooked. Then it's peeled too, then it can be inserted into the pie.

How do they make the egg run the length of the pie? Do they have GM chickens laying rectangular eggs?

[quote=therealslimkaty]i always knew it as Grosvenor Pie too, I like it whatever it's called though. :stuck_out_tongue: I've noticed more recently that ones I've had have been ordinary boiled eggs in, as I got a slice with just white in it, to my annoyance!
Talk about 'hard' done-by !! lol!! *giggle*

A common variation on the common pork pie is the gala pie: a pie in which the pork is mixed with chicken and with a hard boiled egg in the centre. Gala pies are often baked in long, loaf-type tins, with multiple eggs arranged along the centre. The so called "long egg" in Gala pies is actually made of several eggs. The yolks are separated from the whites and the yolks are then poured into a long tube-shaped mould in which they are cooked. The hard yolk is removed from the mould then put inside a larger tube-shaped mould and the egg whites are poured round the outside of the hard yolk. The whole thing is then cooked again to harden the whites around the yolk. This is then removed from the mould thus producing one very long hard-boiled egg.[7]
Actually, having cut the pie you can see that the eggs are individual ones. I think you must have been having some sort of nightmare when you saw this.

Didn't this stuff used to be called "grosvenor pie" ?
Maybe folk couldn't say it so they changed the name?

Good price for a shop, but wholesale these are dirt cheap, I think about £5 for a 3kg pie. Voted hot anyway
