Is it fun? I have never really got into team based shooting games as even on Rainbow Six Shield people didn't chat. These games need team work? I see for example battering ram on a castle? So are there different characters and need for team or is it like kids football and everyone rushes into the middle?

You can duel 1v1, or play free for all which both have no teamwork at all.
The team ones are last team standing, capture the flag, or objective (like the battering ram you mentioned). But in all honesty it's not a 'serious' team game like rainbow six seige for example... Just lots of fun.
Lots of mod game modes too which are enjoyable, such as 'infection' type modes and of course the lightsaber mod.

Already have it but it's a fun hack-'n-slash FPS game. No great surprise either that the number of players shot up from 1,049 at 6pm yesterday to a peak of 25,145 by 10pm, the highest number of players this game has had since release. Apparently, Torn Banner studios decided to give Chivalry away free for 24 hours to celebrate the 'Mirage: Arcane Warfare' closed Beta going live.
