YEP!.
I tried this on more than 1 occasion in the past too .. before stupidly downloading toooooooo many Map's unnecessarily!, and effectively KILLED my Phone in so doing, as I allowed the majority of the Map's to go to internal memory, in the interim (with only a few of those Map's stored on the memory card itself!) of a more decently sizeable micro-sd card - which as you can well well imagine never happened (complacency and all?), hehehehe.
I just game up on it soon after that, lol.
I may do again now though ..... :-)

Yes and no, Google Maps TRADITIONALLY ONLY worked via both your GPS and Internet on your Device turned 'on' right?.
MapFactor GPS Navigation NEVER had that 'problem', because, after you've already previously downloaded alllllll your relevant Map's from previous, no Internet Data for your Device is needed anymore!.
It works purely off of GPS from that point on, and GPS alone ...
And that's been it's MO from day 1 .. Google Maps was never able to claim that?, was it ..... lol.
That's the main difference, if nothing else?. :-)

I installed this to a particular 10 Inch Android Tablet I was having at the time, some years back also (via WiFi only, NOT Data SIM).
And worked perfectly well for that one also.
Though a 10 Inch Device as a Sat Nav was stretching it a wee bit?, hehehe (so needless to say, the Navigation software soon had to go ... )
But was fun (I guess) while it lasted, lol. :-)

That's true too.
Though there's nothing stopping you (if needs be?) in using any Data Allowance you may currently have on a SIM within your Device, etc, to initially install, and/or update any/all Map's upon it from the off though?, so .....
The Tablet I formally used has it's own dedicated SIM slot too (with a data SIM within it at the time also), but took that out for the initial downloading etc, and simply used WiFi instead (as proved a wayyyyyy cheaper option at the time).
But like I said before, IF you have access to 1 of those Unlimited Data SIM Plan's and what have you's, then there's absolutely nothing stopping you capitalising on allllll your Data SIM Card has to offer also?, lol. :-)

I know that one also.
In it's first incarnation when it started ot, it was primarily known as Nokia Maps! (WITH a a yearly subscription/price tag attached to it too, etc?).
Those day's of it's fee aspect have changed! (that's true).
But I believe until more recently, you were STILL required to have a 'live' Internet Connection (in addition to an also active GPS) in order to use this yes? (I've had both 'versions' of HERE on my Phone too, eg. both paid, and free too).
Again (as that of 1 of my previous/above comments), MapFactor GPS Navigation NEVER had such 'issues'?.
It's been free from day 1.
And it works solely/only via GPS ALONE! (after the initial Map's have also been downloaded that is?, hehe). :-0

No. Google maps is better route finding than anything else available imo. Traffic alerts is also a bonus. Here maps is good for offline and the speed alerts and mapfactor is also good for offline use. I always have 1 offline satnav for when there is no signal, currently here maps.

The solely 'offline' nature of how MapFactor GPS Navigation works/performs, mainly does it for me really?.
ESPECIALLY if you 'travel' (Europe, USA, Africa, and the like?) .. the saving's in data Charges alone?, legendary!. :-)

I use this on an old Samsung Android phone and have done for some years now.
Maps were downloaded via WiFi and then stored on the phone.
Excellent satnav application, very clear to read, speed and camera traps always audible warned
Map updates are downloaded at home weekly via wifi.
No need for a sim, no 'google de;ay' as the maps are already there
No charges for 3g connection etc, because you are not using those as your connetction, just the satnav signal:3

If you want traffic updates then only 1 choice. Google maps... Although Waze is another option although the 2 are linked, Google owns Waze and they share traffic data. Mapfactor is really for offline use so I don't think it dose have traffic alerts.

You can receive live traffic updates (and camera warnings) with Here if you set it to online mode. I've been using it for ages and it has never let me down - even when travelling to some pretty obscure places.
I will give this one a try but it will have to go a long way to beat Here.
but nevertheless if it takes me to the right place without any problems then it's all good.

I was quite specific in how I described what I described earlier ...
I mentioned that from day 1 the MapFactor GPS Navigation App/Software has always worked in an offline manner? (neither Google Maps, OR HERE Maps were ever pitched in 'offline-mode' from day 1, yearrrrrs back!, were they?, so ..... )
I've used both variant's of your above mentioned too, so I'm more than familiar with both also. :-)
They may operate in offline-mode now, but as that 'option' is still in it's infancy, the 'alternative' option, eg. MapFactor GPS Navigation, may have a 1 up in that area? (as per that of both Google Maps, and HERE Maps themselves have/had, etc?), as MapFactor GPS Navigation had that from the blatant off? .. which in essence, makes this one a whole different level of Animal? (as far as I'm concerned ..... )
But feel free to interpret it whichever way you also see fit/see best, etc, etc?, hehehehe. :-)

The Android version of Google Maps (well, "Google Maps - Navigation & Transport") does now work offline although you have to download routes and/or map areas. It does now come with all sorts of bells and whistles although you need a connection for some features such as traffic conditions.

No as in NO app will provide traffic updates without a connection. Impossible.
According to the Play Store you do have to pay for some features of MapFactor GPS Navigation.

Long time user of Here maps (worked quite well with offline map loaded + live traffic, didn't eat too much data).
Falling out of love with Here, now that the Hifi voice no longer works, so no street names.
Also have Osmand+ (from the 10p offer) but find its search to be vastly inferior.
May give this one a bash

I don't see this offering anything that I don't already get with Here, which I've been using for years both here and travelling.
The offline search function is a godsend when I'm travelling and don't have mobile data.

Can't beat Waze. Live traffic, coppers etc and it's by google. Yeah it needs data for live traffic etc.
This is a good option for a spare phone/tablet or for when abroad. heat.

Also worth a try if you are after free offline based navigation is Navmii, it uses the same openstreetmap data, however I found it a little easier to use than the Mapfactor Navigator app. It also has some traffic support if you have a data connection. Although it has some premium upgrades for speed camera and to remove ads, these are not excessively priced.
