It is possible to create passport photos and get them printed and delivered for free. It is relatively straightforward - follow the instructions below:

1- Take a picture with a digital camera / phone at high resolution against a suitable background (e.g. smooth bright wall). Guidance for UK passport photos available at https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/303780/Photoguidance_v7.pdf
2- Go to http://www.epassportphoto.com (other similar website are also available) and follow instructions to upload picture and generate/download passport photos on 6"x4" format (you need to wait 60 seconds before you can download the photo for free)
3- Save passport photos on your phone or tablet
4- Download/install on your mobile/tablet the freeprints app (website http://www.freeprints.co.uk/) which gives you 45 free 6x4 prints per month (but delivery charges apply)
5- Crucially, when you first sign up with the app, your first order of up to ten 6x4 prints will receive free delivery (£1.49 discount which wipes the delivery cost). You can use this to get your passport photos (and/or other photos) printed and delivered for free!

It is also useful that you can select premium matte paper for your photos rather than glossy. Low gloss or matte paper is recommended for passport photos.

Photos are sent by second class, but you can upgrade to first class for £1. I have uploaded my photos on a Sunday, received dispatch email on Tuesday and photos were delivered on Wednesday (using the free second class option), so in my case the free option was very quick.

The print quality seems fine, if anything photos are slightly darker than I could see on screen.

I used free software to create passport photos and took the memory stick to boots to print. However, i found that the photo was not as a good quality as those you get from the booths so i only used them for other stuff like photocards etc. I will use the booths for actual passport photos.

True, I also had the same issue when printing some passport photos at Boots. However, as the procedure I described is completely free I thought I would have a go and I was quite pleased with the photos.

I took my own photos and printed them myself, and they were fine for my passport, but they weren't happy-snaps with a phone. Just be careful to make sure they come out at a high enough quality before you send them off.
This deal looks pretty handy though. Heat from me

I find that the software i used, a free one that someone recommended on here (cant remember its name) produced poor resulting quality photos from the original. It wasnt the printer at boots that were at fault.

ok I see yes there's lots off differnet apps u can use some make the photos look a funny green colour I don't like paying for apps so use 2 instead as I don't have a good cream or grey background to use so instead I used a background eraser and a grey colour off the internet then use a app called interent photo maker it's a Nepal app but it seems a good free one there's others around some don't work very well at the sizing. but saving around 7 8 quid per person doesn't seem to be to bad if they failed I would have sent more happened once when I used asda 64p prints but they weren't very good making ur own is good quality even using a half decent phone camera.

Is this a new option? I applied for my son's first passport last year and did it online but still needed to post in the form along with birth certificate and signed photo. How do you get a witness to sign the back of the photo etc if submitting it online?

As mentioned you can apply online for passport and upload your own digital photo where it checks the quality automatically.

WHY In this digital age would anyone bother to go through all that palaver just to send an actual print?
All that does is slow down a reasonably quick and convenient service!
Just make sure that your digital offering complies with the rules on the link to the ".gov" website.

Never mind. I've just seen that you can upload a digital image taken against a plain background for renewals as long as you can be recognised still from your previous photo.

Decided to Google it instead of being lazy and asking questions I can find the answers to myself. :smiley:

The key thing I missed there was it was a renewal. I didnt get that option option for my son as it was his first one. I don't think you need photos signed for a renewal.

I did this last year with 2 passport applications they accepted one and rejected the other even though they looked spot in in the face guide.
So maybe but the best if you're in a rush and don't want to risk the extra wait.

I've used this method and works fine, although I paid about 60p/person to get the pictures printed at Boots. Took the pics myself, edited using the websites stated in op and printed off the images at Boots. Were all accepted for the familys passports.

I find this is hit and miss some of the shops especially tesco don't print them properly they come out much darker and slightly out of focus nothing like the original quality much so that the dvla rejected mine thanks to tesco rubbish printing machines using max spielman printers annoyingly have to retake them reprint them and resend them :disappointed:

Also handy for the odd school application form, whom occasionally ask for a photo (though not necessarily passport specification). Free, after all, is free!

I have used the photos today for my passport renewal application at a consulate (no option to do this online in this case!). They were accepted without any problems and got my passport, so all good.

I was happy to pay £8 to have mine done at a professional portrait studio, got to choose the photo and printed on a decent printer while I waited. I'm a professional penny pincher and wouldn't risk delaying a driving licence or passport application.
