This says you need to be in the same wifi network. Does this mean I can't use it for my wired PC, or was that just a lazy description?

You need to be on the same network. Whether you are wired or go wireless you are still using the same network - therefore, if you're iphone is on wifi but laptop is wired they are both using the same network. Hope this helps.

Would this let me help my classic tech dad when at my house and I don't have to travel across town to help him with something easy? Like team viewer ?

Already own this on iPhone but will make sure I have it for iPad thanks! It's a decent enough app, does exactly what it says it does. Nice little find OP
