Gone Home is one of the finest PC gaming experiences I've ever had. I am a typically cynical gamer. I don't hype things up just because they pretend to be poetry in motion. I found Dear Esther to be dull and pretentious.
I have never seen the 90s better represented than in Gone Home. I felt like I was a teenager again. It's not even just that they have shelves of VHS tapes in the lounge. It's not even just that they had handwritten labels. It's that the films on those handwritten labels were EXACTLY the films you all (or your parents) had on handwritten labels on VHS in 1995. It's a freaking slice of time like nothing you've ever seen.
The other thing is that a lot of people don't appreciate the hidden mystery. There's a mystery that you basically walk through and gradually gets solved for you. Then there's a mystery in subtext with enough pieces you can put together and solve for yourself. I think I picked up pretty much all of it, and it really added to the depth for me.

Awful 'game', I think it just became trendy to like it at some point, probably because the gaming media is more corrupt than the general media, journalists dish out favorable reviews to their developer chums.

Yes, but what I'm referring to is that reviewers were a lot less critical of it because of the all female cast and the controversy surrounding it, they didn't want to risk being labelled as misogynists for giving it an honest review and calling it what it was: a bad movie.
I believe that the same thing happened with Gone Home-

Gone Home, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, pretentious "Art college" walking simulators that are grounding breaking to the mass media but gamers generally go "ermmmm what is this supposed to be?"

Firstly, good spot on the deal. Heat added.
However on the site it seems a bit underhand to say "This game is free but the developer accepts your support by letting you pay what you think is fair for the game."
Before that they say "For folks who opt to pay something for their download, all proceeds will be donated to Lambda Legal http://www.lambdalegal.org/ at the end of the weekend."
How is that supporting the developer?

new Ghostbusters movie
The new Ghostbusters movie had nothing to do with an all female cast.It got slated because it was badly acted, badly scripted with bad timing cheap uncomftable gags and a cash in on the nostalgic original.

I didn't know it had caused so much controversy, I just knew that it got great reviews and that ti was different, but after playing it I feel that reviewers somehow felt compelled to give it great reviews because it was different and the story was kind of edgy (since it took place in 1995), to a certain extent, it reminds me of the new Ghostbusters movie and how reviewers were afraid to give it an honest review because of the all female cast.
I think they went too far though, IGN gave it a 9.5 for christ's sake, a 9.5, it's ridiculous. To me this game could be anything from a 0 to maybe a 6, if you really liked the style, which I will admit is original, but that's about it.

I was honestly looking forward to playing this when it was made available with PS+, but came out extremely disappointed.
Sure, it's different, but that doesn't make it good, it got too much hype for what it was. I got it for free and still felt a bit cheated.

The answer kind of gets into the weeds of gamer mistrust of the gaming media industry. Accusations of nepotism, corruption, and pushing of social justice agendas have caused a rift between gamers and game reviewers. Gone Home has become a poster child for this rift.
While many people enjoyed Gone Home for the story, 90s nostalgia, and new take on gaming. Others accuse Gone Home of not actually being a game and not deserving of the accolades that were thrust upon it by game reviewers. They feel that the personal relationships between the game developer and game reviewers as well and a story line that taps many social justice issues led Gone Home to receive inflated ratings and game of the year awards. Add this to all the people that purchased the game based upon these inflated reviews only to be disappointed, and you have the makings of a rage-fest.
yes, it was recommended on NeoGAF. Good for indie games. You don't need to enter any name, email etc to get the games.

It quite clearly says '100% off' and '$0.00 USD' on the itch.io page. Both of those things mean free. When you click 'Download or claim' it asks if you'd like to pay something but you can just click 'No thanks, take me to the downloads'.
