I'm talking about the cost in time to your GP. I'd personally rather save their time and go and buy one. I know everyone has (and is entitled to) their own opinion on what GPs should be dealing with, in my humble opinion their time is better spent on more serious problems. I know this is going too deep for HUKD though, so I won't grumble any more!!

I bought mine for a tenner and use it every time I wash my daughters hair as her class CONSTANTLY have head lice!!!! Definitely the best one I've used and they give a free replacement if it breaks for any reason

that's what I tried this morning - yes it would have worked - BUT (a) the pharmacist has to be a prescribing pharmacist AND (b) they have to be willing to go along with the idea
I failed at (a) - seems they are thin on the ground

Try ringing your doctors and asking for a prescription request if that doesn't work ask for a telephone consultation to get this done rather than going for an appointment

not as easy as that - I went to 2 Boots pharmacies and whilst by law there must always be a pharmacist present when medicines are handed over/ prescriptions fulfilled, they both said they very rarely have a prescribing pharmacist (except by chance if a locum happens to be one)
waiting on a phone call from doctor's surgery to see if they'll prescribe one without me having to take my daughter there
not sure what it's like in your neck of the woods but down here, you don't get an appointment for this kind of thing (ie minor stuff) without a doctor ringing you first and they are very willing to listen to you, agree a diagnosis and issue a prescription over the phone for you to pick up later, with no need to see a doctor at all
very handy with minor stuff - the other week I got my son diagnosed with acne over the phone and the Acnecide prescribed there & then (brilliant stuff!)

I don't have all the answers, but I do believe that more things like this should perhaps be covered by an extension of the relatively successful 'minor ailment scheme'. I don't see why every pharmacist shouldn't be able to check for headlice and give you a comb there and then, and bill it back the same way.
On the positive side, you also don't have to wait four weeks to get an appointment with a pharmacist, and your GP can carry on with more pressing issues.

Midian - my kids are always getting lice & they come from a very good home! They get them at school by head contact with somebody else who has head lice.
Think about it - they're always hugging & doing group selfies etc.
Last bout (in primary school) lasted a couple of years. We de-loused our kids x2 or x3 over 2-3 different weekends (to get rid of any latecomers that were eggs). Then 3 months later they were full of head lice again.
Don't blame the kids or your friends, blame the parents of other kids who can't be bothered to intervene & let it spread.
This time round (secondary school) my daughter only started to get itchy a few days ago and we got over 60 head lice out of her (abundant) hair!

As a teacher who has caught them myself it is a nightmare in schools...intolerant to shampoos, some children not getting hair checked so Good on those parents who check every day as that's what's needed and treat immediately - that's the only thing that's going to get the increase to start to decrease.
Combing with conditioner seems to be the key I think to avoid them - caught twice (an odd one) in 14 years of teaching little ones but I check my hair every time I wash it.

I wasn't blaming the children. I had lice as a child (and abundant hair) and understand if the children get it. I had it a few times but they seemed to get it so frequently now. I know lice only like clean hair, etc...
that it is on the increase in the general population makes sense. my friend just seemed to be fighting a losing battle. this will be another tool in her kit.
