2nd October. They're repairing the lock gates, and while it's drained the engineers have set aside a six hour period when intrepid visitors may descend into the drained lock chamber. A rare opportunity for urban explorers. Sturdy footwear compulsory.
Long Eaton train station is about twenty minutes walk away, and the Skylink bus between Nottingham and East Midlands Airport passes the towpath (Nelson Street stop, about ten minutes walk). There are car parks in Long Eaton town centre, between five and ten minutes walk away.

After hours they turn off the lights and you can have a 'lock in'....

Thanks for posting this. Just a couple of miles from me, yet I haven't seen any mention of this locally.

A to a Q: if you've got off the bus at Nelson Street, and you're walking along the towpath with the canal on your left side, you're going in the correct direction.

Was going to do the MiG-29 Edge of Space Program next month, but this is just as good! Saves me about 14 grand, so heat added!

One "experience" you dont want to turn up early for or it would be only once in a lifetime!

Passed by today, and they've installed a temporary staircase down into the void.

I've done this when they replaced all the lock gates at five rise locks in bingley near where I live . A once in a life time opportunity well worth taking the time to do . Wish I lived closer
